Mowing Day – again. I’ve never seen such thick gorgeous grass as in the pasture south of my barn – it’s just a pleasure to mow it.
Another log cabin quilt – this one made entirely with mens shirts – such a great feel to a quilt made from recycled well worn shirts.

You may have read about uneven log cabin blocks – using assorted width strips and sizing all the blocks the same before sewing them together. That’s what I did here.

Mary Ellen from Little Quilts has these things for sale.

My day won’t be nearly so busy tomorrow – how about yours? It was plenty warm today if you were working in the sun – it would be just right sitting in the porch reading a book with a tall glass of ice tea beside me. That’s what I’m planning for tomorrow.
P.S. I almost forgot – thanks for clicking on the ads – I wish more of you would do it because they pay for this blog. Good Night from the farm.

I like the log cabin from men’s shirts very much, and all the other quilts. We have green grass and plenty of garden vegetables in SW Ohio, too. I hear it’s going to be much cooler next week, which will be welcome.
Hazel looks very innocent in the last picture; it’s a pretty area rug she is lying on.
Mary,
What you need for your chickens is a chicken saddle! My rooster, Gaston, has a few favorite ladies. You can put the saddle on the hen and then leave it there. She can wear it for an extended period of time and will protect her back. You can find them on amazon! I use the down under outdoor saddles.
Kate – I ordered some in the past – they were lightweight fabric – but my hands must be supersized – guess I’ll try again. Doesn’t it hurt them under their wings?
The saddles that I have are very sturdy and hold up well. My hens are very large orpingtons and wyandottes and they seem very unaffected by wearing the saddle, no wing irritation at all. A few ladies have been wearing a saddle for 2-3months even. Their feathers are actually growing back and they look just beautiful. Ill attach a link.

Kate – I ordered just two saddles for now – my hens aren’t as big as Orpingtons but I like the fact that these saddles are adjustable.
Kate – thank you! I just ordered two adjustable saddles! There’s the answer – adjustable!
Mary, the lawns are so lush! You ride through the country and can see the humidity rising above the crops! Amazing,
Love all the pictures! I would not care to do a hexi quilt. Hand stitching isn’t my favorite. My fingers are getting stiff. I started going to the chiropractor for an over haul! Heehee. It has helped!
I’m working on a greeting card for my granddaughter who is getting married in about a month,
Those stupid roosters can be so mean! I think making soup of him sounds like a great idea! We have a seed corn plot supper tonight. They usually grill steaks!
Not all parking lots use the same distance between the lines! Those parking ramps in Rochester by the Mayo Clinic are so tight! I’m always happy to stay at a hotel that has a shuttle!
Well , lunch time!
Joy – I so agree about the size of the parking spots – I won’t hardly go to Target anymore – the spots are straight on and small – very hard to get into. Yes, I drove the cart right along the edge of the cornfield and it was just a wet feeling – those ears have gotten inches bigger in the past week! All the parking ramps across from Gonda are being torn down!!
Hi Mary, such a fun group of pictures recently. I love all the quilts. Log cabins are a favorite. Yours from shirts looks so comforting. Love it!
It’s a but cooler here today. I’m so ready for cooler temps. It’s family dinner tonight, I’m making a peach crisp pizza and a penne pasta bake with meatballs. Gotta get busy. Have a great day everyone.
I believe I read that simply clicking on the “x” in the upper right corner isn’t sufficient to give you the income, but that one needed to open the ad and go to it’s web page.
Just now, I tried to help by clicking on an ad which said “Designer Girls Dress” and had the word “Atrivio”. It took me to a web page that looked OK, but then this page very quickly switched to a page saying that I had a virus on my Mac. This was a scam page, with a fake virus warning, giving an 800 number claiming to be Apple support. Since I have years of experience programming computers, I knew immediately it was a scam (what is known as “scareware”) and just closed the page. And I was using an iPad, not a Mac, so it wasn’t even a convincing fake. But many others might not know how to deal with it.
I know, Mary, that you don’t control what ads appear, but Google, who provides the ads, should be notified.
No, you don’t have to open the page – just click on the ad. No, I don’t want that stuff coming into my computer either. If that’s the case I will drop Google Adsense.
Mary, remember last spring when you worried the ground was so dry no grass was going to grow?
It’s beautiful grass.
Thanks for updating us on your chickens. Did I miss a post, how are the goats?
I’m mowing grass today. My lawn Angel broke something in his arm. He had surgery last week and will be out of commission till October. Then PT. He may not be able to put up Halloween decor.
Great quilts today…as always.
Oh the sleeping dogs are so cute. Zeus is beautiful.
All the quilts are lovely. Interesting to see the variations with the log cabin. I think that uneven log cabin you made with the men’s shirt is one of my all time favorites.
Sandy, that is an interesting story about your hexagon quilt. That takes dedication. Oh the stories that quilt could tell.
My granddaughters are trying to get together a baby shower for their brother’s fiancé. We’re all too far away to make it easy. It will be my first great-grandson.
Great pictures, as always! That log cabin made from men’s shirts is just wonderful! It looks so soft and comfortable!
Can’t close out the ads. They no longer have an X to click on. And I don’t see any three dots in a line someone referred to as a “new look”.
Good morning Mary,
I love your “Chicken Scratch” blog … it’s always the first email that I read. I appreciate the log cabin photos and love the photos of the animals.
The ads today don’t have any “Xs” in the corner to click.
Click on the three dots set in a line, up and down. It’s a new look!
Clicked on all the ads. Thanks for the reminder.
I love Three and Keeper. I don’t want to know what Hazel does with the frogs. 😂
Frances – actually she doesn’t do anything except nudge them along and bark but I’ve read many times that a toad will cause saliva to drool from a dogs mouth after contact. Thank God she doesn’t kill them.
Oh,my! That poor, picked on hen from last blog! I would be tempted to be making some chicken and dumplings with the bullies! I hate something being bullied. I hope she is going to be ok.
The good night picture of Miss Hazel was adorable! I’m sure that made Elliot’s day. She’s a cutie 🥰! I enjoyed seeing a new picture of Barney too, so handsome.
We have been able to get 3 messes of okra this year off of 5 plants. We love a good mess of fried okra, so much better than frozen from the store.
I had trouble sleeping the other night, only got 3 1/2 hours. I worked on trimming and sewing 6” blocks into rows and forgot all about the horizontal sashing, just had the vertical. Didn’t see it till they were in sets of 2 and then spent the rest of the afternoon with Jack the Ripper. I was so frustrated with the waste of time and thread 🧵! Oh, well.
I went to a class on making purses to send to Africa for the school girls to carry washable pads . They don’t have disposable ones. They are packed with underwear, the pads and soap and it is a blessing for them. It’s called “Sew Powerful “ ministry, will send a picture. I am planning on sewing more and it will be a way to sew down some of my stash and help others 🥰.
Penny and Lucy say “hey” and purrs to everyone 😻!
I, too, love a lush lawn. We mowed Friday and again Monday – 3 days apart. But to walk on soft lawn instead of crispy yuck is so nice. Our garden is producing lots of veggies – daily picking there. No time to quilt, but the longarm is ready with a quilt layered for the next time I have the mojo to do it.
I love the quilts in today’s blog. I have made more log cabin quilts than any other type of pattern. Just how one lays out the blocks can make such a difference. Maybe I should put that on my list of things to work on this winter.
I too have made a hexagon quilt, hand pieced while we traveled to and from our son’s home in Cal. and then to my brother’s home in Rhode Island at various times. The quilt ended up being 94 x 116. The elderly lady who taught me to hand quilt called it a Century Quilt because it was made from scraps from all my earlier quilts, plus other scraps given to me. She told me it should be hand quilted 1/4” around each hexagon, but I didn’t want to spend all that time doing 1/4” quilting, even though I loved to hand quilt, so several years later aI finally sent it to a long arm quilter and got the job done. I gifted it to a grandson and his wife last fall. I’m sending you a picture. The short one in the picture is me at 92. It was a fun project. His wife is a beginning quilter (I’m sharing my fabrics with her) and she appreciates all the work that went into the quilt. I used an Ardco template to cut the pieces. Jeanne in Co.
Love the uneven log cabin quilt. I really like making quilts from men’s shirts. The mini blocks and quilts are great. I’ve made several over the years and have framed a few them and hung them in my kitchen. I’ve never made a hexagon quilt-I don’t know if I would have the patience to do all of the handwork. I admire those who do make them and wow! there are a lot of hexi’s in Sandy’s quilt. Zeus looks like he’s living the good life! As do Three and Keeper. Hank does the same thing at bedtime-out for a pee and ends up spending 10 or 15 minutes chasing moths or june bugs.
Cindy – tonight I’m going to picture your Hank and my Hankster – that’s how we’re going to tell them apart. I’m missing Hankster – he was neutered recently and hasn’t been allowed to rassle with Keeper yet.
Hi, I would like to click on the ads, but I don’t see any ads. Where are they located on your daily blog? Love your blog and appreciate all the time and effort you put into it. Especially love the pictures of your dogs, cats, and chickens.
Hi Bonnie – at the top of the email notice you get there should be a Read on Blog link (or ig may be located elsewhere depending on your email service). Click on that and it’ll take you directly to the blog page where the ads are.
Lots of fun pics tonight. I do so enjoy reading your blog, Mary, and appreciate the work you put into it. Always interesting to read the comments too, of course. I am looking forward to attending the Minnesota State Fair on Friday. My friend entered 3 of her quilts – first time. Hope the weather cools off. Ten ads to close tonight! Good night, farm, and everyone.
Jane – have loads of fun at the fair!! Maybe it will cool down a bit. I couldn’t/wouldn’t do this blog without reader comments. I look forward to chatting with my morning coffee.
Hi Mary, thanks for showing my hexagon quilt, it stated with a group venturing England 50 years ago,my friend Sue brought it out to new Zealand when she immigrated 30 years ago.we met at craft group and she gave it to me,so l added hexagons to make it a decent size and gave it to my sister Gwen in Australia. Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy
Sandy – thanks for telling the readers about the hexagon quilt!
