76 Big Ones! 7-3-24

Yup, I celebrated by 76th birthday today in grand style. Becky and I went out to lunch for fabulous fish and chips with a cold beer and late this afternoon the pretend grandkids came for a bit of fun and supper. Here are a few candid shots:

Tomorrow is 60% chance of rain but I’d really like to mow – I don’t want to wade into the people at Clear Lake so it’s mowing or sewing depending on the weather.

A few reader photos:

Have I ever told you the 30 Stars Story?
Can you believe this corn?

Like somebody said, Farmer Tim sure can grow corn!!

Remember that old saying “knee high by the Fourth of July” ???

“The corn is as high as an elephants eye, and it looks like it’s climbing clear up in the sky…”. (Tell the truth – you’re singing it by now!)

Oh, What A Beautiful Morning!

Oklahoma by Rodgers & Hammerstein

So what are you doing on the Fourth?

P.S. Hang in there with the comments issue – I haven’t given up!

Just catching up on my emails, Happy Belated Birthday, Mary! Looks like you had a great day. Hot and muggy here today in MA, we had a quiet day. Our daughter, Jaime, dropped in yesterday for a visit, that was fun. Our other daughter had to stay close to home, her puppy was diagnosed with Giardia and has had to stay home away from other dogs for a number of days. Poor little guy. Her vet said that it’s everywhere and they get it by drinking from puddles. Happy Fourth everyone! Jan in MA

Happy Birthday a day late Mary! What a wonderful day celebrating with the kids! Beautiful quilts and yards with flags decorating. I love seeing the corn grow. Growing up, Oklahoma was my favorite musical and yes, I start singing that song every time! Happy Birthday Mary!

Happy birthday, Mary! Looks like you had a special day. Lots of great photos again today. More rain expected this week, the weeds are really growing!

  7. Jackie in NY

Happy Birthday Mary! It looks like you had a great time with the “grandkids”! We drove up to Schroon Lake in the Adirondacks and walked around town, then came home for a picnic with our son, his wife and our granddaughter.

  8. Janet S

It looks like you had a great birthday, not only with your sister but also with your borrowed grandkids (they’re adorable). Here’s hoping Rick is doing better.
Fourth of July festivities are somewhat toned down here in Minnesota. We still have some flooded roads (from recent rains) and more rain coming so cities are leaving barricades up. It’s a real disappointment for some but we don’t care as it gets to be a big traffic jam to leave.
    Great quilts today.

  9. NancyTD

Happy Birthday! A great day with lunch with Becky and later with the pretend Grands. Quilts were special for the 4th. Liked the patriotic bed quilt.
Rain this morning and partly cloudy-71 degrees. Forecast is for rain at fireworks time.
We enjoyed the visits of two granddaughters and their families and our daughter and husband. Seven kids around kept us busy. It was a fun 10 days. They all come to MN. from OH. It was hot there and chilly and rain here. A relief from the heat for them.
Happy 4 th to everyone.may your day be happy and safe

A belated birthday, Mary. Looks like you had a very good day, including Becky and you with lunch. You had your fish and chips! Looks like fun with the pretend grandkids. Only got 1/4″ of rain in the night. Hurray!!
Lennox has a big 4th of July celebration with cruise night, a dance, parade, entertainment, food, and vendors. So far the rain has not come. Hope you can get some mowing done today. Neat pictures of the
kids. Like the quilts. Have a good 4th of July.

Just want to wish you a happy birthday. Looks like you had fun!!
Love the patriotic quilts, especially the one on the bed.
Rain here. Just getting ready for my trip.

Oh, Mary..what a fun day to have a birthday. Happy day to you.
The pictures of your pretends are great, they look like a wonderful addition to your family of friends.
Don’t you just love all those r-w-b quilts? I do.

Today is mowing day for me. The high is forecasted to be in the 70’s.
I bet you can hear farmer Tim’s corn growing. Lordy that is fast.

I’m glad the comment box showed up for me after I rechecked cause I wanted to say how much I loved all the pictures of smiling faces and quilts. So much goodness to see. Mary I wish you a very happy and healthy year ahead! We need you just like your pets need you.
I have been doing some reading about these Duckworth quilts and want to attempt using my strings and scraps. I would love to see if others have made them and it might be fun if we try a mindless sewing block to see if it’s a summer sew along here. No pressure and would be neat seeing what color themes or fabrics your readers chose. I don’t know whether to do random size middles to start or one consistent size like a 3” square. So hot and humid outside so in with the AC today.

    1. Diane, Squeak, Buddy in Central Ohio

I like that idea Kathy! I have been so busy with Honor Flight quilts, I would love something different or maybe a red/white/blue one. Our QOV coordinator gave my QOV quilt to the wonderful Vet who delivers the Honor Flight quilts to other veterans. He is so nice. I hope to send a photo soon.
Mary, it looks like so much fun celebrating with the “ pretends” and family😀😀🍰 OH HAPPY DAY🎂🎂

      1. Kathy in western NY

I’m game Diane to try this method. And I agree with Candys post down below that I don’t want to overthink this and make it too matchy matchy cause I will be starting and stopping depending on summer schedule too. Beginning simple with a lap quilt will be my goal so I can donate it if it’s not my cup of tea. I sure have liked the two videos I’ve watched. I’m thinking blues and teals and I might copy Candy and do orange for centers too as I have a stack of scraps left from my eclipse quilt that I haven’t found a spot to put away so maybe it’s telling me to use them!

    2. Candy

Kathy, I made a Duckworth quilt for my grandson’s high school grad in May. I used all blues with orange centers. The orange centers were all different sizes, and ended up in different places in the various blocks. My biggest mistake, when I first started, was being too ‘anal’ about trimming and squaring up the block after adding each strip. OMG … each block was taking forever! When I switched gears and started just sewing all the strips on, then pressing and squaring up the finished block, everything went so much faster … and they worked out fine. Anyway, that’s my experience. I’m happy with the quilt, but don’t think I’ll make another. It’s probably queen-sized, and it took forever! Good luck!

      1. Kathy in NY

Thanks Candy, this is what I need by reading how others made theirs. I have many blue scraps so time to make a dent in that bin.
I appreciate you sharing your thoughts! Scrap quilts are my favorite.

Happy Independence Day! It is raining here. Probably will continue till evening. Tim will be grilling in the rain. The brothers will be here before long. I’ve got everything ready.
I love ❤️ all the patriotic quilts. The bed quilt is awesome! All of the quilts look great! I’m glad you had a good birthday with the pretends. That’s so fun! Have a good day everyone! Stay safe!

  15. Pat in Michigan

Happy Birthday, Mary. You are a firecracker!
So many beautiful patriotic quilts. I love the quilt on the iron bed.
The pretend grand kids are adorable and what a treat to have a birthday party with them.
I hope you and Rick are doing well and celebrating the 4th on the porch with a cold ice tea. Cheers

  16. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

Happy belated birthday Mary. It looked like you had a very nice day. Happy 4th of July to all the American readers of the blog. Summer finally arrived in BC this week. We will have temps in the mid 80’s this week, compared to last weeks low 60’s. My garden is happy for having the sun. We referred to this past June as Junuary as it was so cold and rainy. No quilting will be done for a bit I’m too busy enjoying the sun and working in the garden. Hope everyone has a wonderful day today.

  17. patti

so totally forgot to say how much i like the quilts and other pictures today. so many patriotic quilts. they are all just great. thanks for sharing. patti in florida

  18. patti

happy fourth of july to everyone. it is hot and steamy here in central florida with a heat index of 110 til 6 pm. too hot and humid to do much but stay inside and sew. thought about shopping for a new sewing machine but should save the $$. i don’t need fabric since i can’t sew fast enough to use up what i already have. i will have fun trying. my angel group meets tomorrow and i have 3 larger quilts for them this time. doubt i’ll have another ready. have several i want to finish for myself. we shall see. i am so glad you had the pretend grandchildren around for your birthday. fun for all. enjoy. patti in florida

  19. Pamela Dempsey in Northeast Texas

Happiest of happy birthdays to you Miss Mary! Looks like a great time with those honorary grandkids! We will be at 100 today and a heat index of Lord only knows. Hoping the hot tub wont boil us away. I would like to be in it to watch fireworks. Going to work on string blocks for our Project Linus and try to stay cool. Happy 4th everyone and thank you Veterans!

  20. Susan in VA

Happy belated birthday, Mary, and Happy 4th of July to all! We’re going to have a quiet day here. There’s a severe heat advisory but looks like there may be rain showers starting around 3:00 until 9:00. Don’t know if it will affect fireworks or not. Our dogs will be happy if they’re not going off!!

  21. Sue H

It poured last night and early this morning but the sun is shining at present. Rain is in the forecast for this evening’s fireworks so lots have been postponed until tomorrow night. I believe I’ll call it a holiday and sew today. However dinner will still be up to whatever I come up with. Happy 4th of July, Mary and to all your devoted readers.

  22. Alice in SW Ohio

What a great way to celebrate your 76th birthday, Mary! And with those pretend grandkids! This is a week of partying for me! My friend Ron celebrated his 91st birthday on 7/2! I took him to a fancy restaurant to celebrate & the meals were more than we could eat, so we have left overs! Yesterday we joined my former work friends for a picnic. Tonight we’re meeting church friends for a potluck, country music, & fireworks! Friday I will spend part of the day baking a German Chocolate cake for another birthday celebration for him at a friend’s lake house on Saturday! Yes, he loves all the attention he’s getting! He’s also in remarkably good health! Have a safe & Happy 4th everyone!!

  23. Jeanine from SE Iowa

Happy 4th of July Mary and all our blog readers. It is so nice to hear from Mary and read the comments from other parts of the country. When I went to the website earlier this morning there was no place to leave a reply……now there is when I checked in again. We had some rain this morning, but I think it is suppose to end by noon. We are enjoying a few cooler days now. Not much happening with my husband and I today. He will grill hamburgers, and we will have a quiet day by ourselves. It sounds like you had a wonderful birthday yesterday, Mary. We are thankful for each birthday God gives us at the age we are at now. Enjoy your day.

  24. Gail in Ohio

Happy belated birthday!!! How nice that you could celebrate with the pretend grandkids!
Love the photos this morning – and agree with avoiding the crowds. Happy 4th to everyone!

  25. Sheryl Harrison

    Happy Birthday, Mary!

I love the patriotic quilts. I guess I don’t have an actual patriotic quilt but I hang Country Threads’ Be Still in June and July. I also change out the pictures by the quilt to an eagle/flag cross stitch and another cross-stitch mom made.

  26. Vicki in Seattle

“Happy 4th of July,” to everyone! It is a beautiful day in Seattle. Our whole family is coming for a barbecue.
For years, we have carried on a family tradition of making Homemade Ice Cream with an old fashioned hand crank freezer. If you want to eat the ice cream you have to take a turn cranking! It is delicious!
The potato salad is made, the beans are in the Croock Pot and I am ready to mix up the ice cream and let it chill in the refrigerator until “Crankin” time!😂

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Vicki – that sounds delicious! I used to make it quite often but then my shoulders got bad and I had to quit. Maybe I should try it again! Just plain vanilla is my favorite.

  27. Vicki Ibarra

We will have a wet July 4. That means some sewing time. Yay! We were in Clear Lake on Monday for a funeral and I thought of all the times I went to Country Threads when I was in the area. My husband and I stopped to visit one of his high school classmates after the funeral, before returning to Iowa City. So, we had a full day of “sitting”.

We finally got the lawn mowed yesterday. With all the rain, we are battling how to squeeze in mowing, just like you, Mary. I do like the look of a freshly mown lawn.

Love the quilts and all the pictures on the blog. I am glad you celebrated your birthday in fun ways. Happy 4th, everyone.

  28. Sue in Oregon

What a fun birthday you did have!! Almost felt like I was there too. Happy Birthday, Mary. Wishing you the very best 76th year.
