A Better Day, 7-16-24

Yes, this was a much better day to be sure! I read all your comments and best wishes in the porch this morning while I drank my coffee. I am overwhelmed by so many of you willing to pray for me. I told Hank’s mom that I’ve never felt so helpless or so prayed for than I do right now. She said I’ve never needed it as badly as I do right now.

So I heard from Mayo and will be expecting another call tomorrow from scheduling. God’s hand is at work – they had already received an online request for an appointment and had much of my info. How did that happen? I’m thinking the biopsy was done there and they got ahold of me directly. Is that possible? I will be talking to the clinic tomorrow.

Sam came out and sat in the porch with me for quite awhile and I loved that. She picked up dog food for me and other supplies. I am so lucky to have Sam! Then Jenny and Becky came to clean litter boxes and just some general stuff around the house. Wow, I know I can’t do all of this stuff right now.

Oh, and by the way, I told Rick I’d lock up the SOB chickens – last night I went down and just strolled into the yard and they all headed inside. Tonight at 9 pm I went down and everybody was already inside the barn! Good chickies! I told RICK it was partly the tone of voice – he went down and yelled at them and waved his arms, I’m sure. They were terrified. They ran for their lives, don’t you think?

Remember Sherry’s monarch eggs? Here’s the progression so far.

Thank you, Sherry! Obviously I’ve never watched this act of nature before. Keep us updated.

Reader photos

Oh, how I love this!
I just have to get this started.
Online photo – I love making these blocks – going into my file
Sam brought these to me – I’ve never had them but they are delicious. They are not your ordinary popsicle!

Around the farm today:

Night blooming cereus – 3 blooms at the same time with many more buds to open
A sea of cosmos
Jenny checking some hard to reach plants
Keeper with Petey, his favorite toy

Many of you might recognize the famous Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake where tomorrow night Ryan’s band who Jenny sings with will be performing. More about that tomorrow – of course I’ll have to miss it.

This is where Buddy Holly played his last gig which they celebrate the first weekend in February each year. Holly’s plane went down just a few miles north of Clear Lake after the concert in 1959.

I am sick that I can’t go.

More phone calls tomorrow to get appointments figured out. Thank you for all your prayers and concern – I need them all.

It’s so hard for me to be still but I’m doing it. I got a pile of cards today which are oh so fun to receive. Janie D. – got your message and loved it. Hey Everybody, she promised herself she’d use up all those older cards before she bought more and I’m going to do the same thing. I’ve always maintained that kindness matters – not the beauty of the card. The fact that the sender located a card, wrote a message and signed it, addressed it, found a stamp and got it into the mail is a BIG DEAL!!!

Rick’s going to drive me to my pedicure appointment tomorrow. If I have to be in the hospital at Mayo I want my toes to look good!

  2. Kathy L Sorrentino

You do sound better that’s so good and good for you going for a pedicure that always makes me feel better also good luck at all your appointments and at the Mayo love and prayers to you always

  3. Roxanne

You sound better, Mary! Going for a pedicure is a good idea—they are so calming and then you have pretty toes to enjoy! Those Outshine Bars are sooo good! I’m addicted to the coconut ones—creamy with bits of coconut. 😋 Take care 🙏🙏

  4. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

Mary, so glad you are having a good day today and that mayo got in touch with you. Praying for a speedy recovery and the test results are good. I agree with you I make my morning coffee and then usually read your blog and the comments. I enjoy all the pictures as well. A theme of quilt rooms could be a good idea. Messy or clean, who cares it our space. At least that’s what I tell myself. Have a good day.

  5. Debra L Reber

So glad you had a good day! Praying that things go well with Mayo Clinic. My grandkids all love the Outshine popsicles!

  6. Jackie in NY

Hi Mary! Of course we’re all willing to pray for you! This blog brings a lot of joy to our lives. I love just hearing about the everyday happenings on the farm, all the animals, and of course all the pictures. I’m praying you receive good news about the biopsy and that you’ll generally just feel better soon.

  7. Susan Franke

Mary, you have so many people praying for you, including me. I’ve read your blog for years and so enjoy it. I feel like I know you. Your energy, determination, and compassion are evident in all you do.

I pray that your biopsy results show nothing. I know the stress of waiting for biopsy reports and it’s very hard.

On a happy note, I’m so enjoying the Yamaha baby grand we talked about a while back. A great purchase and thanks for the recommendation.

Keep healing, and we’ll all keep praying.

    Mary,
So good to hear you are feeling better and that you are getting closer to answers from Mayo and a treatment plan. I also get the blog being a sense of normalcy. We’re all hear pulling for you!!
Outshine fruit pops ARE delicious! enjoying the monarch journey being shared. I keep laughing at the chickens responding to Rick and after the 3rd day of seeing you, already nestled inside on time.
All the pictures are always a joy to see.

Jan in AZ – Rick and the chickens will remain a top ten story. The Rick and bat story is in one of the comments I answered today. It’s almost as good. His favorite phrase must be “sob”

  9. Beryl BC

It is good to hear you’ve had a better day. Can you believe I’ve never been inside the Surf ballroom, even though I’ve been by it many times. I’m sorry you will miss Jenny singing. Do they record for online viewing? I’m not surprised Mayo already had your information, with electronic records and also that Mayo has a large reference lab. Prayers for your care and continued recovery.
I enjoyed seeing the pictures today. The monarch story is interesting. My husband suggested planting milkweed in the garden. I’ve always thought of it as a weed, but understand it is what the monarch lays eggs on. I wonder if the deer would eat it; I’ll send you a picture of the good looking deer that is eating in our garden.
As always, there are beautiful quilts.

  10. Linda K.

One day at a time! It’s all we can do! So glad you are feeling better Mary! All the lifting up in prayer is good for you and your doctors to get you back to your old self. It’s amazing how our bodies can recover so fast , but don’t let it fool you into doing so much. Everyone is there to help when you need it. Enjoy the beautiful weather and take in all the beauty around you. Sometimes we need to just stop and remind ourselves of the wonderful world we have. Continued prayers for you. I so wish I could find a monarch egg!

  11. San

So glad you’re feeling more chipper Mary. Hope you can get all of your appointments straightened out.

The weather channel tells me that the temp. is 87 degrees, but it feels like 94. The humidity is horrible today. I bet Farmer Tim’s corn is very tall by now.

Loved all of the pictures today, especially the Monarch.

    Take care of yourself Mary.

San – what’s the John C. Campbell Folk School? I’m going to look it up – sounds interesting.

      1. Brenda in Georgia

I went to Young Harris College my first two years of college. It is in the North Georgia Mountains and a hop, skip, and a jump from Murphy, NC. I have visited the John C. Campbell Folk School. It is in a beautiful setting and from what I remember the school teaches many arts and crafts. I believe the students live there while taking classes and students can be of various ages. You can look it up on line, I think, and get a good idea of what they do. It was many moons ago when I visited, so I do wonder how much it has changed.

        1. San

Hi Brenda, The school has gone up in price quite a bit since I last taught there in 1999. However, it’s still a beautiful place to spend a vacation for those who have expendable income. And yes, there are dorms on campus to stay in , as well as a variable meal plan for the dining hall. Some folks choose to camp at the school’s small campground.

      2. San

It’s a great place and what brought me to this corner of the world. All kinds of classes throughout the year, everything from basketmaking to blacksmithing, wood carving to furniture making, and weaving to fiber dyeing. There are cooking classes too! Visit http://www.folkschool.org.

  12. Kimmy girl, from southeastern Ohio

Hi Mary! Am so glad that you are feeling better! Love all the pictures today, as usual. Hope everything goes well with getting you into Mayo soon. Continued prayers and well wishes for you. Be still

  13. Gail in Ohio

Mary – SO glad to hear you’re feeling a bit better and that you felt good enough to corral the chickens; that’s a positive note! Also glad you’ll be taken care of by the Mayo Clinic and that they are on top of your case – another positive…
I always enjoy the photos – inspiring to say the least. I’m happy to hear that you are enjoying the development of the monarch egg/caterpillar because it is indeed amazing. I’ve loved watching the process on common milkweed, swamp milkweed, and butterfly weed (just 3 of the varieties in the milkweed (asclepias) family that monarch butterflies have to have to develop…) here in central OH and hope you get to see every stage!
More and many prayers still going up…

  14. Shirleyf

O hope you get good news from the lab results. I’m thinking of you. I am enjoying the caterpillar growth on the milkweed. I keep checking mine, but I haven’t seen any sign of eggs.

  15. Kris in WI

Oh, Mary, I completely agree with not wanting visitors while in the hospital. I’m afraid I’m not an inspiring hostess at the best of times, and I certainly don’t want to entertain guests while lying in bed! So sorry you will miss Jenny’s show. I hope another time you can see it Front Row Center!
Loved all the pictures today-quilts, Keeper and Petey, blooms, and those bullies, but especially liked the “behind the quilt” look at the anonymous quilter’s creative space.
Best to you and prayers continue, Kris

  16. Jo in Wyoming

Popsicles and pedicures, coffee and porch, ice tea and bedtime, iPads and blogs. Great medicine.
I’m so glad you’re better today. I hope the news from Mayo is the first paragraph in the textbook. I prefer very common, very treatable ailments. Nothing rare or unusual.
Keep us posted on the news.
We are cooling off and expecting rain. My thermometer read 101 and 104 last weekend! Frontier Days start Friday and generally the rain does too.
Tell Rick if he’s not kind to your chickens, he’ll have bad dreams.

  17. Carolyn Rector

So glad to hear you are feeling better. And happy that the Mayo Clinic is close to you. I like to think of you getting a pedicure to prepare. Lovely pictures today.Enjoy your popsicles. Having friends close helps, too. You are in my prayers. Good luck with the chickens. They’ll have to get used to Rick.Maybe you can go together to lock them up together. Be still…

  18. Dorothy

Mary, I am so sorry you are having health issues. Sending much love and good wishes to you.
I read the blog every day, but don’t make a comment very often.

No doubt there is a very strong Mary Etherington cheering squad and I will be cheering for you, Rick, the chickens and the pups. You are in good hands with Mayo and I will pray for the doctors, etc., who will be working for you. God Bless.

  20. patti

mary, i am so glad to hear that you had a better day and that the mayo has already been in contact. such service is amazing. i had an idea. when you go to hospital for surgery, maybe tell the chickens that there will be this crazy man putting them up at night because you have to be away. might help. enjoy your pedicure and eat those ‘outshine’ popsicles. they are the best – a bit pricier but they are worth it.
all the pictures are wonderful today. i never knew that information about monarch butterflies. the blog about nothing certainly teaches us all. the flag quilt is unique – really like it. i flagged quilts for my future doings also. i never mind that people do what i’ve done as i’ve probably pulled it from someone else also.
thanks to everyone for liking my quilts. the heart one i pulled from a blog belonging to louisa enright and she found it at ‘all people quilt’ online. had been in a magazine, american patchwork and quilting, february 2024. the purple quilt is a ‘buggy barn’ star quilt. in purples it will be donated to seniors that are shut in.
just realized that i can be considered a shut in. the only place i go is to the doctor. just am home all the time. not fun. i realized as i was telling my sister who mentioned ironing. i sit at my sewing machine in a roll around desk chair. turn around and iron because the board is down low enough. i do cutting of fat quarters and scraps at the edge of my machine. yardage i have to stand up to cut.
mary, a better word could be ‘acceptance’. it really isn’t easier than ‘patience’ but sometimes can fit a situation better. i keep fighting this word but some days i understand. prayers are continuing for your improving health and path back to your normal. gentle hugs, patti in florida

    1. Lynn in Scottsdale, AZ

Patti-you are doing an amazing job of being a shut-in. All the beautiful quilts you are making and sharing. Good job!

Mary-prayers are continuing for your health and recovery.

      1. patti

thanks, lynn. i don’t do alot of anything except sewing/piecing. would love to be able to quilt them but until i can, this is the next best thing. for years i was a professional longarm quilter and still think i should do my own. though for the last few years, everything is being donated. which is also a good thing and helps people. gets the fabric out of the house. thanks again, patti in florida

  21. Kim from Wi

It is wonderful to hear that you are feeling better and I pray it continues. The pedi should brighten your day and I hope you find those popsicles. I didn’t know they made “mini” ones; I will look for them. Your flowers are wonderful to see, I never heard of cereus plants. The old wash tubs sure make a cute planter. It has finally cooled off her in middle Wisconsin and I hope to get some work done in the garage. A few more things need to be hung up and put in its place. Husband is busy installing a ceiling fan in the master bedroom with a remote control. We are hanging that on the wall so its easy to find. Still unpacking but its coming along. Rick and the chickens still crack me up, they know who is really in charge of them.

  22. Dot in NC

i”m glad you heard from Mayo. I’ve had biopsies three times, and it’s the waiting that’s the hardest. Once you know, you can get busy doing whatever has to be done, and life starts moving again. All of us are sending hugs and holding your hand as you make this journey, which many of us have traveled..

The chickens remind me of my Iowa uncle calling in his cows. He’d drive the pickup to the top of the hill overlooking the pasture, and honk the horn a few times. The cows would look up, see that he had his dog with him, and head for the barn. He never had to send the dog to the pasture, but if the dog wasn’t there, the cows would ignore him.

    1. Cindy Sabinske

All my husband had to do was call humboss ad everyone followed! Me, not so much, they were a one-man herd and I was there with him every day just like him!

      1. Vicki Ibarra

I saw your “humboss” and I instantly remembered my father doing that. What a special memory you triggered!

  23. Jean from Michigan

So glad you are feeling better! I’ve been praying for you. My husband has been undergoing cancer treatment for 4 1/2 years and it has continued to grow. He is looking into a trial that offers hope.

So good to see you have good helpers! Those pretty toes will give you quite a lift.

Prayers continue for your healing ❤️‍🩹

  24. Sherri Huff

    Mary,
I’m so happy to hear that you are feeling better! Know that many prayers are coming your way! So happy that you are going to Mayo, I’ve hear wonderful things about Mayo from friends that have been there!!!
    God is so good.

  25. Beth

Praying for you , Mary. I know you’ve got a great medical team that will take good care of you. Enjoy your porch and coffee and fur babies. You deserve a little time off 🥰

  26. Pat Smith in VT

I’m so glad you live closer to the Mayo Clinic. They really are a wonderful operation and saved my mother’s life many years ago with a surgery for melanoma. Once you are in there they are sure to work their magic on you too with so many blog readers praying for you and thinking of you. I had to laugh at the SOB chickens. It reminded me of my 5th grade teaching years when I’d need to be out and have a substitute. These normally perfectly behaved 5th graders changed into little monsters when I was gone. When I got back I always had a non committal note from the sub, but slowly, the true story would come out. The perpetrators hung their heads in shame! I doubt if any chickens felt any guilt at all! We are in VT now and Sonny is doing everything in his power not to upset our daughter’s cats in any way. He stays as far away as possible from past unpleasant hissing experiences. I’m thinking of you and praying Mayo’s will work their magic once again.

  27. Tanya T. in Houston

So glad that you have Mayo! You are in good hands there! Hope they treat you like a valued customer at a day spa and serve you great food, too!

My favorite Drunkard’s Path template is by Elisa’s Back Porch. It’s small and the pieces go together better than any other templates I have tried. SO I just ordered and got the bigger template. I pulled fabrics yesterday from the sewing room and am dreaming about getting it cut.

I made chicken and dumplings for supper last night. My mother always made them from scratch, but I use a can of biscuits. I realize this must be a Southern thing, but oh, so good!!

Hope that your calls for appointments and all that business go well today. It will be good to get this all behind you and be able to look forward to Autumn.

    1. Jo in Wyoming

Tanya, I hope you are ok after all that nasty weather in Houston. I think of you often especially when the weather news is rough. Take care…Jo in Wyoming

Thanks, Jo! We are fine. Only three days without power. That was enough!! I think of you often and wish we lived closer!

  28. Linda

God Bless…It was wonderful to read that you are doing a little better….I am happy to read that you are going to Mayo…i had cancer and I believe that Mayo saved my life …

Keeper looks so happy!!!! Such a fun dog!!!

I love seeing the monarch photos….gosh-they grow quickly…..Love, Love that flag quilt…..

So glad to hear that you are feeling a bit better today. It gives a whole different outlook when you feel in control of your day.
Loved to hear about Rick and the chickens. They know who they want to see! We had a garage sale last week and now we have been clearing out items that did not sell. I feel like it was a good step in decluttering. Loved all the quilts today. Your plants are getting huge. Prays to you on your journey. You’re blessed to have family and friends that can help you. Be Still

  30. Janet

Thank you for the update. Will continue praying for you🙏. The monarch egg/caterpillar pictures are fascinating. Thank you for sharing.

  31. MJ

Good morning Mary. I am just getting caught up with your blog and I am so sorry to hear you are not well. YES, prayers and hugs are coming your way. I will be checking the blog daily. I love how you live life!

  32. Brenda in Georgia

So happy you are having a good day and help from loving friends. I keep you in my heart. I love your blog today. It is filled with beautiful things. I think your are the chicken whisperer – they definitely know you love them. I have had milkweed for three years now but no sign of eggs that I can find. They also haven’t bloomed. I read they need full sun and mine get morning shade. My son introduced me to the Outshine popsicles and I love them. The full size one piece ones have so many flavors and the pineapple has bits of pineapple and some others have bits of fruit in them. My favorite, though, is the LIME. It is like having a Dacquri without the alcohol. Truly. I promise.
I have a sad night blooming cereus story. My uncle brought one from Hawaii to my Grandmother in the late forties/early fifties. She and my mother had green thumbs. My sister and I not so much or it was a lack of time and focus or knowledge of how to care for the plants. Anyway, they were passed down to us and we managed to let them die! I am still mortified!
So happy you are getting all the prayers and cards. My son has been very sick with a bad case of pneumonia for almost a month now and is struggling to get well. I could also use lots of prayers for him.
Thanks so much for your blog. It is a ray of sunshine to us who love you. We hope to be a ray of sunshine to you Let us know if you think of anything we can do to help!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Brenda – pneumonia? Oh no – does he have help? A month of being so sick does not sound fun at all. Please keep us updated on his health – I personally would love to send him a card if you’d send me his address. The night blooming cereus is a pretty homely plant except for these few summer days. I’m not sure it’s actually worth it because mine have gotten so huge now that they have to winter in the quilt shop.I’m going to tell Sam about Outshine popsicles and I’m going to look for them this morning after my pedicure.

  33. Iowa Rachel

Mary you are amazing! Most people wouldn’t bother keeping the blog going but all the interest and love you show to others is coming back to you! Hope you get your health issues figured out and more importantly straightened out, right? Keep looking up and training Rick to care for all your barnyard loves!!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Rachel – the blog is normal life for me and I’m not ready to give that up. I still love drinking coffee in the morning while reading comments. It’s the best part of the day!

  34. Charlotte in No. California

I’m so glad you were feeling better yesterday. I hope today is a good day! You are in my prayers. So glad you have some help. Just take it easy and rest. 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Love all the pictures today. Can’t wait to get home and start sewing. I’m driving to Pittsburgh in a few hours and flying home. I’ve been visiting my dad in West Virginia. Love spending time with him. Would love to take him home with me but at 96, he says he’s done flying.

  35. Jan Hebert in MA

I am so glad that you’re feeling a bit better, Mary. And that people are helping with chores. I also love that flag quilt! I hope the pattern information is shared by the maker. I love the picture of the sewing studio! Love seeing “where people create”! It feels a bit cooler here today after thunderstorms last night. My plants outside look a little bit happier. Continued prayers for you and your family. Jan in MA

  36. Wendy on Cape Cod

Wow for someone “taking it easy” you are still getting around a lot Mary! It really speaks to the kind of person you are. One who likes to be busy and purposeful and taking care of all the things. I am so glad you had a better day and so much support from friends and family. It is so hard not to be able to do the things you are used to doing. The farm is looking good. It is your turn to be helped out and cared for by others. You would do the same and have many, many times. Wishing for a speedy and positive outcome from the medical professionals. Sending positive thoughts to you. Take care.

  37. Patty

It sounds like you are feeling a little better. It’s so nice to have friends there to help you. When I was in school we had to find a milk weed with an egg and keep it in an ice cream bucket. We watch it grow into a butterfly. It was fun because I had never thought of how the process went. Have a great day.

  38. Ginger S

I’m happy to hear that you are feeling a bit better. Thinking about Rick herding the chickens just makes me smile. Sending hugs your way!

  39. Joyce from NY

So glad you are feeling a bit better !
We’ve had some hot & humid & stormy weather the last few days, my power was out last night for a couple hours! Love all the pictures. Glad you have some help Mary, let them help you & you rest!!

Happy to hear you are perkier! Also, great you are in Mayo Clinic’s hand! They will get it figured out and in short order!

Thoughts and prayers for continued strength. Love you!

Hi Mary and Praying Circle of Comment Friends! I am a long time reader who is going to get kicked off the blog if I don’t comment. So here I am this morning with Well Wishes for your healing Mary and that you continue to grow stronger with the help of your faith and friends. I am a quilter but I like many others have collected too much fabric and find myself slowing down to just admiring other’s ambitions. I am not into this computer stuff either and have had a hard time even communicating on one. I agree with many of the comments on the blog so I just remain still. Remain strong and determined Mary ! I will keep punching the adds and being a fan of Country Threads . I live in Northern Illinois.

    1. Rita in Iowa

Marcella, my mother’s name was also Marcella. Nice to see others with the name.
Hope you. Have a great day.

  42. Fran

Prayers Mary for you. WOW I did not know what was going on as I was at a retreat and then home to deal with a personal family issue. Relationships are hard sometimes. But I am thinking of you and praying for you. Keep your positive attitude going.

  43. Donna Sproston

By all means get those toes a spa treatment! However, when Mayo tells you to go to the photo lab you won’t need to worry about hair, makeup, or what you ate wearing. I heard back from Mayo two hours after my referral and sent up a prayer of thanks! Epic software has revolutionized the communication between doctors, patients, and healthcare systems. (It was created by a young graduate student, a woman! at the University of Wisconsin). Let your local friends support you in every way possible, and let us out in the blogosphere send hugs and prayers. And don’t forget to sit down and play the grand piano in the main lobby while at the clinic.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Donna – I do love the piano at Mayo but have never had the nerve to play it – I would have to bring my music. Most pianists are playing by ear and I could listen for hours. I didn’t believe they’d call so fast – today I’m waiting for that second call. I’m already packing a small pouch with my chargers, hairbrush and breath mints.

      1. Donna Sproston

Avoid an under wire bra and they can shoot you through the scanner as is! We have seen music on the piano rack so go for it. We have also heard folks play who barely mastered chopsticks. My husband was a piano professor and took music but the piano was never free. Maybe in September on my 51 month check-up. I count my blessings and send you many!

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Donna – what? Your husband was a piano professor???? Where? Did he give lessons? Oh, how sad that he didn’t get to play the Mayo piano!! 51 months – now that’s something to celebrate, my dear!

  44. Linda in Saginaw Michigan

Thank you for a wonderful blog this morning, definitely about a lot and so much we want to hear from you. You are our celebrity, real and so much like many of us as you know. I hope you feel that we are all supporting you and mostly, praying for you. How ever Mayo got in touch with you I am so glad, when we discovered my husband needed a new heart we got to choose Mayo, Cleveland or U of M and I had a short 4 hour window to get him to the hospital when a heart was available so U of M was the choice because it is 1 hour and about 45 minutes away. But all three are the best of the best and we have never ever been sorry. Mayo would have been my next choice but to far.

Keep up the faith Mary. I wish there was something I could do to help but please know you are in my heart, thoughts and prayers.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Linda – I wish you were taking care of my animals – I know you’d “get it”. I did tell Rick yesterday that the comfort and well being of my animals is the most important thing in my life. I know he doesn’t understand but is trying. I know I’ll be gone again which has been my worst fear for years – leaving everybody.

  45. Carmen M.

So glad you are feeling a bit better! Loved seeing the progression of the Monarch egg, I have Milkweed growing in my yard for the first time and now will go check if there are any eggs on it, thanks Sherry and Mary! Nice you are so close to the Mayo Clinic, hope they get you in fast so you can get back home very soon! Praying for you!

  46. Elaine Kopischke-Trejo

Mary – so glad to read this post! I can only imagine Rick corralling the chickens! I’m sure they are much happier with you doing the job! Take care and post when you feel up to it.

Elaine – posting keeps me aware of normalcy, something I can’t wait to get back to.

Glad you had a much better day. We are all going to need help at one time or another; just a fact of life. I know it’s not easy though. Hope your scheduling with Mayo goes smoothly. Glad your going to have pretty toes for your appointment.☺️ Hope you get to see the game tonight. The monarch photos are so interesting. We will be in Harlan Iowa over the weekend for Dan’s 40th class reunion. We will have to tape the All Star game. Hope you have an even better day. Hugs and prayers.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Donna Jo – do you think the All Star game will be much fun? I don’t think so but of course I’ll be watching no matter what. And then I’ll have to get started with the Olympics. I’ll be watching tonight – I hope there’s no drama!

  48. NancyTD

    Glad you are feeling better.
Sherry— thanks for sharing about the monarch.
Patti— your quilts are both beautiful. The scrappy one with the heart will be loved for sure.
Like all the pictures on the post today.
Good luck at Mayo and know lots of prayers are going your way. Hugs!!

  49. Kathy in western NY

The pictures this morning to see are all so inspiring and Patti continues to amaze me with her scrap quilts that I love. Thanks to all who give us a peak into their rooms – don’t we love our Knick knacks.
It sounds to me like your biopsy testing was sent to Mayo labs to analyze if they are to contact you so I feel confident you are in good hands with them. We all wish we could be with you to help do anything like Rick, Sam, Becky and Jenny are there so appreciative of the updates. I’ve always felt no one needs to feel alone if we’d only look past ourselves and you are the example of that kind of living. Even a card in the mail can brighten up a day.

Kathy – I do trust Mayo and hope they tell me to hurry up there – we’re only about 2 hours away. Should we do another Points of Interest feature? I love that! When I go I’ll be able to keep in touch but I really do hate someone sitting in the room with me. Then I feel guilty because I don’t want to talk and they have to be bored out of their minds! I would be. So I’m hoping once again someone can just drop me off at the front door.

      1. Kathy in NY

Mary- have we done sewing areas yet? I know some do send in pictures of their areas on and off and it seems to be we all like them by the comments. Mine is always messy so this might be incentive to clean up an area to show others. Points of Interest are another of your original ideas that bring such joy to readers.

  50. Sandra Goddard

Glad to hear yesterday was a better day. Lovely pictures today. Continuing my prayers for you Mary.

  51. Vicki Ibarra

I hope you are scheduled for an appointment very soon. The waiting is hard. I am glad you had a better day.

Love the quilt pictures and have saved one of the pictures to “maybe make some day” file. Ideas from pictures mean I will never run out of things to make.

  52. Diane, Squeak, Buddy in Central Ohio

Good to hear you are feeling better, Mary. Hang in there; I pray this too shall pass. I am still laughing at the SOB chickens! They are so pretty.

  53. Rosalie in Texas

I thought I might have missed a post and went back – somehow you were waiting for biopsy results and now Mayo is calling. Praying.

  54. Deb in VA

Hi Mary, yes glad that you are feeling better. You’re down and out and yet the blog keeps going! I’m impressed! It’s good medicine for you.
Good for you getting those chickens in. So glad folks are helping you. Loved the scrappy triangle quilt too! I’m snapping a pic of your Pic and saving in my file also.
My Candy Mountain quilt has been finished for a couple of weeks but I haven’t been able to get it to the quilt lady because I had covid, of all things. Still getting energy back. I’ll send a photo when I finally get it returned.
    Get well soon. 🙏

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Deb – egad, I hate to hear that Covid is still raising its ugly head. The blog and you readers are my lifeline – it’s the normal part of my life and I just won’t let it go. My IPad is going to Mayo with me for sure.

  55. Lynette in Orlando

Mary, SO HAPPY to hear you are feeling better! Prayers will continue……take it day by day. I also pray all goes well at Mayo. Love your story on the chickens! ha. They certainly know who is boss!!!! Be strong Mary, know all of us out here love you. Xx

  56. Amy Kollasch

I am glad to hear you are feeling a bit better, and that Mayo is getting you in to be seen. Hopefully, you can have answers and some kind of plan going forward. Inspiration from all of the quilts! Beautiful as always! We are continuing our prayers for you.

  57. Barbara Yarnell (in MO)

Having a better day makes all the difference in your attitude, doesn’t it? Thank God for friends and family who step up when they’re needed without being asked or expecting anything in return. What a blessing for you when you needed it most!
Thank you for sharing the Monarch’s progress pictures. Patti, I love your “heart” quilt made with squares! Hope you don’t mind but I saved a picture so I can make one like it. I also saved the picture of the scrappy triangle quilt because it looks like a good scrapbuster.

    1. Cindy Sabinske

I lobved the triangle quilt as well! I am thinking the two smaller triangles are cut from a larger square. Anyone have suggestions on the sizes! I thought a 3 1/2” half square or 4” so the square cut into fourths would need a larger square? I got about 3 miles in today walking my bluebird trails, what a beautiful day! I have two bluebird nests. The newest one were from pinkish eggs instead of the usual beautiful blue. Three chicks in each nest, one egg in each was not vital.

      1. Mary Etherington Post author

Cindy – I wanted to do your bluebird photos justice so I have them ready for tonight’s post. There were too many other things last night. I just didn’t realize they’d be such a beautiful blue at such an early age.

  58. Sandy

Hi Mary, pleased to hear things are improving! Patti in Florida amazes me with the quilts she produces! I am slowly sewing strings for a star quilt for my great nephew, l want to give it to him next june when l am in Australia, l have 5 great nieces and nephews to make adult quilts for now.l am glad you are getting plenty of help Mary, take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

  59. Carol Nichols

I am sorry that you are going through all of this but happy to hear that you are starting to feel better. Praying for you! Loved your pictures today, as always actually. Take care!!

  60. Martha W in WY

I’m thankful that you’re feeling better but still taking it easy. I chuckled over Rick’s comment about the chickens. I can just picture that scenario! Haha! My daughter her in ND has a fancy setup for her 6 chickens. When it starts to get dark they head into the coop, then the electric door closes. She even has a camera in the coop so she can see them on her phone.
Last Friday night Matilda, my granddaughter, made another strawberry rhubarb pie for the state fair. She has dyslexia so my daughter reads the recipe to her. Well, my D got distracted and an ingredient was not added. Can you guess which one? The sugar! That pie stayed home. So Sunday, another pie was in the oven. I delivered the projects to the ND State Fair on Monday. This Friday we go up (1.5 hr drive) with the chickens. Of course the kids are excited to stay in a motel and be able to swim. About the blog today, I love the flag quilt in the third photo. I agree with Patricia and hope that the maker can share the pattern name with us. Also, Patti’s purple quilt is beautiful. I am really impressed with all of your outside plants. That’s a lot to water in the summer. I’m keeping you in my prayers. 🙏

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Martha – haha! A strawberry rhubarb pie without sugar won’t win many prizes at the fair! Oh, dear. I have a friend in Texas with that same automatic door system. I’d always worry there would be a straggler that was late and get locked out. I think I might know the flag pattern and I intend to look.

  61. Fiona at Ice Bear Quilts

    Hello Mary,
good that the Mayo is acting quickly, after all, whatever is going on the sooner you are getting the correct treatment the better. Glad that you are feeling a bit better today and that you are being helped to take it easy! I ssupect the chickens need their Mom and anyway a woman’s touch! Take are and best wishes for the Netherlands!

  62. Patricia

I have to say I’m relieved you are feeling better. After your comment about feeling shaky, dizzy, weak and in pain I was thinking you should be back in the hospital. I’m happy to hear you had some help and Sam sounds great. Anyone bringing you food/meals ?That’s a good church ladies project.

Your plants are lush. I’m jealous. That special plant with the 3 blooms looks really pretty.

I love that red, white and blue flag quilt. Maybe the person who made it could share the pattern name.

Can’t believe how quickly and gently you corralled your girls.

I’m hoping all the appointments can get quickly scheduled. Having the Mayo Clinic so close is wonderful. If any place can fix you they can.

Love the psalm. It would be a good meditation.

We are all with you, praying you on to good health.

Pat in Md. we actually had some rain today. About 20 min worth.

  63. DebMac

Good to hear that today was a better day. I hope your scheduling with Mayo goes well. Will keep you in prayer.
We had 2 tornados touch down in the Quad Cities area last evening. We were with out power for 8 hours (thank heavens for a generator) No damage here but a couple of plants blown over.
Nice pictures again. The caterpillar reminded me of the book, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. I couldn’t say just how many times I’ve read that book to little ones. My daughter texted me this evening that she had seen a trailer for the movie, “Harold and the Purple Crayon”. Our son emulated Harold and drew a purple line all around his room with crayon. She thinks the 3 of us would have a good time watching the movie. I think she just wants to push her brother’s buttons. Ah, sibling love.
