A Big Thank You From Lorraine, 8-22-25

Thank you, thank you!

I had 76 cards land in my mailbox!!

What a wonderful blessing to receive so many  beautiful cards and notes. So many happy messages and little gifts, including two balloons and a sheet of stamps! What a thoughtful gift.

My friends in my building were amazed at my pile of cards and figured the mailman must be weary!

I had a very happy birthday,  in part, due to all the fun I had reading cards from across the country from all of you, Mary’s friends,  and  now, my new friends. I wish I could write and thank all of you personally, instead,  please take this note as my sincere thanks for making  my August 12th, 94th birthday so special.

Lorraine Thompson

I, too, thank all of you for taking the time to wish my Mom a happy birthday with a card. It meant the world to our whole family.  She sits and rereads them often. You guys are the best!

Deb

Well, Gal Pals, we did it again! We made someone happy with a simple card. Thank you All!

    Barney is so cute!

    Love that rebellious chicken.

And yesterday, we had a dramatic thunderstorm. I love thunderstorms as long as there is no hail. We finally got much needed rain, and turtles and bullfrogs in my teeny, tiny pond are very happy!

Paula – I, too, love to sit in my porch during a thunderstorm! I hate to think of them being over till next year.

I also received a thank you card from Mickey! What a surprise & it absolutely made my day! How very sweet of Mickey!
Here’s the info & some background on the patriotic quilt. The name of the pattern is “# 1137 Stars on Point” A Jelly Roll Quilt by Whistlepig Creek Productions. I’ve had this pattern for years, so have no idea if the pattern is being sold. I did not use a jelly roll, but have collected patriotic yardage for years. This quilt is being presented to a dear friend of ours as a QOV quilt. We’re meeting him & his wife at Parris Island, SC (Marine Base) in a few days. He retired from the Marines after 30 yrs. This is the 5th quilt I’ve made from this pattern & is well written, it’s one of my favorites! I did find Marine logo fabric for the back of this quilt. Thank you all for your comments on my quilt, I appreciate it!
Love Hazel’s antics! She takes her job very serious keeping the home front free of critters! Bless her heart!

Love all the quilts & critters. And just like Elliot I love seeing Hazel everyday. What a hunter! I had one of those weeks where I had something to do out of the house everyday. Finally got my sauerkraut canned today. Wonderful cool weather for a change.

Oh Mary. If it isn’t Hazel, it’s the chickens. I am not sure whose shenanigans entertain me more.

  5. Jeanine from SE iowa

I also received a card in the mail today from Mickey with a cardoard circle which said “You’re a Rockstar”. I was totally surprised by that. Never was expected.
Alice from Ohio – I, too, love your patriotic quilt. Wonderful colors and a really nice setting.
When we had chickens, I found a nest of eggs out under a tree in the back of the farm in some tall grass. After that, I kept them cooped up till about noon, and that did help. I had another hen lay eggs on top of a dirt pile we had in the back yard among the grass there. I watched her one day to see where she was laying them. I knew she was doing it somewhere. They can be stinkers about that.
I went back to my surgeon yesterday about my eye. It is almost back to normal, but he did give me another steroid shot around my eye. That does seem to help get the swelling to go down. It has been 6 months since I had that surgery. If this helps clear it up I won’t have to go back. If not, I will go back in 9 weeks. It’s been a long ordeal, but my surgeon has been and was wonderful.
Have a great day tomorrow as you attend church. We look forward to that every week.

Jeanine – when I’m missing eggs, I begin to think where I haven’t looked and sometimes, like now, I still haven’t found them. I’m just not picking up the normal number each day so I know they’re somewhere –

Jeanine, I was so very surprised as well when I got a Thank You card from Mickey Lund with a cute cardboard circle saying, “Thanks for going the extra mile!” I was so touched, I sent her another card to let her know I was thinking of her! Yesterday I made it out to Camden State Park to check on the bluebird houses. Just one nest of 5 House Wrens is left. They are so cute, and so tiny as well. I think they should leave this week so it will be time to take them down once again. This is my fifth year doing the bluebird trail at Camden and this year 11bluebirds fledged, this is the most I have had so,the Bluebird Recovery Program of Minnesota, recognizing the success of the program is now called Bluebird Program of Minnesota, their name has changed, still the same mission. The success of the program and the volunteers who do this has made a difference. It is oh so cool this morning, Autumn is just around the corner for sure. I am going to make Aunt Sally Cookies and Country Threads’ Heath Bar Cake! Happy weekend.

Mary I too revived a thank you card from Mickey sealed with a “so grateful for you sticker. I never expect to receive a thank you for just sending a card.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Brenda KS – nice you got a thank you card but not expected. I think Mickey was just thrilled to,get the cards. Thanks for sending one!

  7. Jan in AZ

Alice, I concur, a beautiful patriotic quilt in a striking colorway. Linda, the same goes for your sister’s scrappy log cabin. Off to get some more material before it gets hotter outside. Have a wonderful weekend all. 🙂

So fun to read how those who receive cards enjoy getting them. Nice quilts-never get tired of seeing what people create. That’s a clever chicken to lay her eggs on top of a hay bale. Wonder what was going through her mind when she was searching for just the right spot. Hank hasn’t caught a squirrel yet but he did pulverize a bird. We typically have a lot of coons in our yard at night. Hank sits by the sliding glass door in the evenings to watch what’s going on outside. He barks hysterically when he sees anything outside moving.
We were having a problem with coons coming into the yard-and sometimes right up on the deck. Hank has chased them all off and we haven’t seen even one coon in our yard for several weeks now.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Cindy K – well done, Hank! Those coons should not be up by the house!! I don’t get tired of seeing the quilts either – I get much inspiration from my readers.

  9. Wanda from WTX

Several years ago I saw a license plate that said “Gotta P”. I’m still laughing about that one.

Alice in Ohio, what is the pattern for your patriotic quilt? Love it!

  10. Pat in Michigan

Such a “good feeling” post today. Great to hear that the cards made Lorraine’s day so special.
I liked seeing the nest the hen had made from the chopped corn. Also Barney. How is Fluffy Buns?
The two quilts today were great. Do you know the name of the patriotic quilt, such great use of color.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Pat in MI – I’ll ask Alice the name of the quilt. FluffyBun is good – not any better behaved but we can live with it at this point.

  11. Lynn in Scottsdale, AZ

    Alice in Ohio-Loved your quilt.

I did receive a card from Lillian Mickey Lund as well. Very nice of her.

I did see a license plate that read: MYTFAST. Made me smile and wondered about the speeding tickets.

The pictures of Three and Keeper together are so sweet. There was a picture of them together several blog posts ago. Does Three try to run along with Hazel and Keeper, Mary?

Hot but grateful for A/C and the swimming pool here in AZ.

  12. Teresa in Indiana

Hi Mary, the pics today are great! Barney has the cutest little face. Hazel never gives up does she? The patriotic quilt is beautiful! Great work on this one! And that looks like a lot of eggs to find. Have a great day everyone.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Teresa – Hazel exhausts me because she doesn’t ever give up till we go to bed. Sigh.

  13. Nancy from PA

The quilt from Alice in Ohio is the prettiest patriotic quilt I’ve ever seen. The colors are perfect. Good job!!

  14. Linda Schluchter from Saginaw

I received a thank you card with a cardboard button “A round of applause for you” inside from Lillian Mickey Lund. She wrote that she is also an animal lover that has four dogs and four birds that she enjoys being with. Isn’t that sweet! I certainly didn’t expect one from just sending out a card.

I’m thrilled these ladies enjoy all the cards and am happy that I participate. If one kind jesture can help someone I’m all in!

My sister’s beautiful quilt made your blog today. It’s the big scrappy one with stars. She got the pattern at Seven Sisters Quilt Ship in Carson City, Michigan, almost an hour from me but one of the most beautiful stores you ever want to visit. Seven lovely sisters and now their children have worked at the store, one dear sister unfortunately passed in her sleep a couple of years ago at a young age and was not only grieved by her sisters but eveyone who knew her from the store. Since there is only one quilt store in Louisville now, the sisters enjoying traveling Michigan when they come up to see how much we can spend at quilt and antique shops!

Sammie and Nelson are proud of Hazel. Chasing squirrels is their favorite passtime. Sammie has caught a few that she takes off in the woods and burries. I’m not sure Nelson will ever catch one, he runs so fast a squirrel can hear him coming from far off stomping on the ground. They will sit forever looking at a squirrel up a tree.

Blessings everyone! We are enjoying a few cooler days and next week we will have 60s and 70s for highs. Don’t fret, September normally brings back extreme heat!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Linda – I want the heat back – I’m sitting in the porch with a sweatshirt and a quilt!
