A Good Day! 12-2-24

Becky drove me to the chiropractor this afternoon which makes it a good day right there. When we got home she helped me to the barn where I could see everybody again and I loved it! I did find Dizzy outside and if she hadn’t gotten back into the barn she would have been dead by morning in these temps. It’s very hard for me to explain my love for these chickens.

Christmas photos from readers

My personal chef fixed my breakfast again this morning – so delicious! Once a week he browns spicy and regular sausage and then stores it in the frig until he makes eggs in a paper bowl every morning. Mine was one egg with sausage, Colby Jack and Swiss cheese in the microwave. I transfer it to my favorite blue bowl because I prefer not to eat from a paper bowl with a plastic fork!!!! Makes my teeth hurt just thinking about it.

So I feel pretty darn good – weak and I couldn’t walk very far but nothing really hurts. I just don’t have the energy that I usually have and that’s making life pretty boring. My legs feel like wet noodles! Ha!

SO……it’s December 2 and this makes it open season for any and all Christmas pictures. Send them to my email and I’ll post them for everyone to enjoy. I’ve already posted a few here and there but now it’s December and we have only 22 more days of decorating pictures to drool over!

Send me your Christmas pictures!

Glad you are coming along and not having any pain. That really makes recovery easier. Just don’t get too frisky as you aren’t better yet. A bit of sewing at the sewing machine is probably in the near future. Just for good measure.
All the Christmas pictures are great. I am envious of how ladies have set up their rooms with the decorations. They look so nice.
Yesterday we had 9 above zero and others had colder. Today it was 63 and tomorrow is supposed to be a bit cooler. Who knows? The lake effect snow is horrible – 6′ deep. That is a lot of shoveling and I bet it isn’t light and fluffy stuff. Has the lady who wrote about it before checked in with us yet?
It is sure good to be back on Mary’s blog. We can see what is going on with the rest of the world.
Take care, everybody. Mary don’t overdo. I love the jokes, especially that make me laugh out loud. We all need to laugh more.

What a great post today! I so enjoyed all the pics. People can make some really great quilts. And all the Christmas pictures. Puts me in a mood.
Thankful you are feeling better Mary. Getting stamina back takes awhile. A long while. When I had surgery it took me a full year to get back to baseline. It was a big surgery and I was old. Don’t give up. Each day gets better.

Jean – I read this to Rick “it was a big surgery and I was old”! Haha! Yup, that’s me, too

Keep on feeling better, Mary. That breakfast looked great to me–yum. I am happy Dizzy is all ok. Our critters do give us worries. Buddy was under the kitchen table last night and I couldn’t find him. He was snug and did not come out until I rattled the treat jar. At 20 pounds he does not need more treats!
Stay warm and don’t do anything strenuous.

Hi Diane…would you share the pattern name for your winter scene. I like that style! Thanks for sharing your work with us.

          Hi Helen,
Yep, that’s right:) I bought the pattern with NO idea how to make it. I had just joined the Guild in 1995 and ended up in an applique group. Did NOT know how to do that either
Bless those women, they taught me how to use freezer paper to turn those blocks and each member did a block. Some of them have passed away so it is a very cherished quilt.
The little dog is made from fabric that says, “i love my cat!”. I do have an odd sense of humor and no dogs, just cats. I do walk about 5 miles per day in my neighborhood and I take treats to all of the dogs–there are about 13 off and on. Thanks for asking, Helen.

Diane! You remind me of an Energizer Bunny! You never run out of energy, so peppy and willing to learn anything and everything! To walk 5 miles every day is a feat in itself, and to be so generous to the animals on your way is so thoughtful! You’re amaZING—with the ZING in all caps! Your Christmas wall hanging is even more special with your explanation on how it came to be! Holiday cheer to you and your wonderful pet companions!

Mary, how great to get out, even if it is for a doctor appointment! Your farm animals were thrilled to see and hear you, just as you, them. Progress, slow and steady is wonderful news. No to little discomfort is great to hear!
I’m going to have to try Rick’s breakfast. It looks so yummy!
Christmas decorations aren’t out as this week is dealing with a house issue. After recovery from that, out it comes. My Advent daily reading this year is from a book by Sheila Walsh called “The Gifts of Christmas”. Pretty soon I’ll start watching my Christmas movie favorites on DVD’s. Cup of hot cocoa anyone?

Mary glad your strength is returning, take it easy though. Glad Rick is cooking for you. Glad you checked on the barn animals, gives you peace of mind.
Love all the Christmas quilts and decorations, you all out do yourselfs.

The pictures Mary posted are a truck panel that I just straight line quilted to hang on the porch. The Dalmatian mug rug is for my Grandson in Texas. He wanted a real puppy but his mom said if he got one the person who gave it to him would get one also. So a compromise. The Hexie quilt top was made from the hexies I received more than 35 years ago. The person hand cut them. This is about lap/walker size and I gave it to my sister to use for charity.
The 30 + hexies I have sewn will get cut down and sewn in as blocks into a top or two. The first one was labor intensive.
    Have a great day everyone.

Have patience Mary, every day you will feel a little stronger and then a the end of the week look back and see your progress! Those wet noodle legs will feel stronger each day.

I had to chuckle about Rick doing eggs on paper plates. I don’t think Jay thought about doing that. Pretty smart of Rick…no dishes to wash! The Michigan grandkids like scrambled eggs with sausage and then they roll it in a tortilla shell.

Have a good day! Funnies are funny and loved the pictures!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – Rick likes his eggs rolled up in a tortilla as well. Buy Jay some paper bowls!

I’m so glad you found Dizzy! That would have been an awful fate. We are cold, but not THAT cold! The only time my chickens don’t go in their big coop at night is when I have to separate the rooster from the hens because he’s so…”frisky”. Sometimes I forget that I’ve done that and he hunkers down in the small coop for the night. There is no human access door on the small coop, it’s just a shelter for the wind, etc. and was built for daytime fun for them. After it gets dark there is no way he’s going to jump down off of the roost! I don’t separate him in the winter because of that. I’m surprised that your little hen would not go in when it’s dark? The pictures of the Christmas quilts are great! Really puts me in the mood for the holidays. I just love the pillow with the colorful presents on the black background and also the panel window pane quilt! I’m so glad you’re feeling so good, Mary! Jan in MA

It’s great news that you are recovering and were able to see your chickens and so many things you care about.
All the pictures are wonderful! I look forward to each post filled with great photos!

Your message today was uplifting. You are on the mend, Mary. Keep up the good work. I know the feeling of weakness in your legs. I bet slightly lighheaded too.

The photos are inspiring. Funny too! Nancy in ID, I wish I knew the name of that pattern.

I am ready to rock and roll on the long arm. Don’t know when it will happen tho. It’s sew day at my house today but I don’t long arm when others are chattering away. I don’t want to miss anything–Ha

I have a funny to share that hopefully, will make you laugh out loud like I did. My cousin in Springhill Tennessee sent it to me – we are four days apart, grew up like sisters and are rapidly approaching our 75th birthdays! Can’t believe that! Anyway, here we go:

Three women, two younger, and one senior citizen were sitting in a sauna only covered by a towel. Suddenly there was a beeping sound. One of the young women pressed her forearm and the beep stopped. The others looked at her questioningly. “That was my pager” she said. “I have a microchip under the skin of my arm”.

A few minutes later, a phone rang. The second young woman lifter her palm to her ear. When she finished, she explained ” That was my mobile phone, I have a microchip in my hand.”

The older woman felt very low-tech. Not to be outdone, she decided she had to do something just as impressive. She stepped out of the sauna and went to the bathroom. She returned with a piece of toilet paper hanging from her rear end. The others raised their eyebrows and stared at her. The older woman finally said “Well will you look at that,……..I’m getting a fax!!!”

Hope that starts your day in a good way and keeps you smiling all day! Blessings!!

Linda – hahahaha!!!! Yes, that did give me a chuckle with my morning coffee!

    2. Diane, Squeak, Buddy in Central Ohio

Good one Linda. Thanks for the laugh:) Got to 30* today–yahooo.
Taking my friend for surgery tomorrow. Leaving here at 4:45 AM to get her. It will be a short surgery so

So happy to hear that you are feeling better. The energy will come but I’m sure you’re getting antsy. It’s hard to keep a good woman down!!!!!Loved all of the Christmas quilts and that little Christmas sprig, bauble and clothespin was adorable. Someone has a great sense of humor! Take care Mary.

  12. Vicki in Iowa City

Great to hear you are feeling good and that you got out to the barn. That little venture meant a lot to you and spirit lifts are an important part of healing. Cold here in Iowa City. As I looked around our neighborhood last night, I could see a few homes with their exterior Christmas lights on. So pretty. I look forward to the Christmas decorating pictures that everyone shares on this blog.

  13. Sandy

Hi Mary, glad you are getting out and about, and that Rick is avoiding dishpan hands by using paper plates! I had a lovely day, lunch with a friend, non stop chatter! The Christmas 🎄 with one bauble is priceless, l have broken one bauble already and need to work on keeping the Christmas fairy straight on the tree! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas 🎼🎵🎶🎶🎶🎶🎹
We need some snow…New York…Will you send us some?

    1. Kathy in western NY

Hey Jo – I’m keeping the snowfall we finally got last night! It’s too pretty on the grass and a light pushing is all it took to get off the steps for the dogs to go down. I do have to pull out a pair of shoes though to wear today as sneakers were all we needed yesterday for running to appointments.
We needed it badly with our drought. Buffalo got it all as you saw with Josh Allen on Sunday.
The Christmas decor does boost your holiday spirits. I’m working slowly on mine.
Mary each day will give you more and more strength. Your chef is feeding you well and moving good around your home which improves attitude that is everything.

  15. Jeanie S, Central IL

Lovely post, Mary, thank you. I am glad you had an outing today, even tho it is so cold. Dizzy is one lucky chicken that you had a chiro apt.
The decorated fireplace is especially festive with the beautiful quilts; I love trees, so I especially enjoyed the tree arrangement on the mantle.
Good for Rick prepping his breakfast meat for the week; I think I will do that with bacon.
Grateful For Your Good Day, Mary 🥰

my challenge quilt is a top! scrounged around and found a blue for borders. have the first sides cut but not attached. think i know what i’m going to use for binding. so wednesday will probably be for finding and making a back. will need to go upstairs so then i can find my december quilts, i think i have one downstairs – it is a jan patek santa with the woodland creatures. not very festive at my place yet. all my christmas cacti have bitten the dust because the cat likes to chew on them. i want replacements.

The Christmas quilts and decor are beginning to put me in the Christmas mood. Mary, there’s nothing like fresh air to pick one’s spirits up. I bet your chickens were as happy to see you as you were to see them. I hope your week continues to be as good as today was.
