The Survey, 12-1-24

I just finished the Mayo survey but it was a list of 5 degrees of the answer plus a short paragraph to elaborate which wasn’t enough. Maybe after reading my answers I’ll get another chance.

My compliments to the chef!

This is the breakfast Rick made for me – one egg omelet with sausage and cheese, chocolate milk, orange juice, coffee and my pills. Since I’m still not hungry and it’s supper time, I guess it will last me all day – except for the ice cream that Michele and Hank brought me this afternoon. Keeper and Hank are the best buds and had such a good time rassling and running. You can tell by their tongues hanging out!

I have received sooooo many wonderful cards and gifts. This is my most rewarding card:

Thank you, Elizabeth!
Herefords! I love cows!

Gloria and Gaylen brought me this super fun stack of plates and chickens – all ready for the garden next summer. I could put birdseed on the plates or even small succulents. Oh, the possibilities are endless!!Greta has claimed the space below ever since.

From Dollinger Tree Farm

Every year Janie Dollinger sends me a gorgeous wreath decorated with dog cutouts. I am the envy of my neighbors since I hang it where it can be seen from the road.

Located in Shannon, IL

About my long flannel dress – I’ve had it hanging in my closet for several years and have never worn it. Bought it at the thrift store for $5.99 and it’s a Hannah Anderson! I knew the brand was special but the style very old. It’s such quality stitching – every seam is finished, the cuffs are faced, the plaids match everywhere – all in all a great dress. Now I wear it every day! Hahaha!!!! And I wish the style would return, don’t you?

I gave the dogs a pig ear last night -Hazel mostly likes to guard hers from the cats.
Picnic

Here is my quilt, Picnic, hanging on the wall and Michele just made it as well, on the right, as a centerpiece for her Christmas table.

Sweet details
Michele’s couch quilt – I’ll just bet Hank won’t be laying on it, especially as wet and dirty as he was when he left here this afternoon!

More pictures to come!!

It does my heart such good seeing you in your own home with Hazel close by. Keep up your recovery in baby steps so there won’t be any setbacks. Such beautiful quilts scattered throughout this post.

  2. Linda in Colorado

Mary, I love that dress and it is not out of style. What i’m seeing is a dress like that with pants or leggings underneath. Some would call it a pinafore . At our age we get to wear whatever we like. Comfort first. Get out those denim jumpers.

  3. Beverly in O-H-I-O

Mary you’re a doll in your flannel dress.! I’m sure the fresh air felt good to you. The wreath is lovely. So glad to see you back on the farm. Special prayers for Sally and the procedure she’s facing. Many prayer warriors here!

  4. Jeanie S, Central IL

I am sending prayers to Sally J Melchert. I hope today’s procedure went well and sending prayers for Wednesday.
Mary, as many others have said, you look fantastic! Your comfy flannel dress is adorable and perfect for healing/resting.
I loved seeing Greta all snug and warm in the middle of everything. Have your other felines welcomed you home?
That live wreath is very beautiful and festive. I know taking it easy is not your jam, but hang in there. 🥰

  5. Joy in NW Iowa

Oh Mary Im so happy to see your smile and you look so good in the comfy dress! As for the appetite loss, I think that happens to everyone who has surgery. I wasn’t hungry for a while either and certain things were
Not appealing to me, like too much spice in food. Weird.
    Loved all the pictures!
Looks like Rick is taking care of the cooking which is great. 😊

  6. Jan in AZ

Mary, it’s so good to see your smile and being taken care of by Rick and all around you. Love the flannel dress. Even in recovery you’re looking festive for the season in the bright plaid. 🙂
Rick’s breakfast looked yummy. With all that protein I probably wouldn’t really be hungry at suppertime either.
Well, Mary, your alma mater and my alma mater are meeting up in the Big 12 game Saturday. This is one time I won’t be rooting for Iowa. 🙂 It should be a good game, though.
Sally, so sorry for your health emergency. Prayers for a steady recovery.

Mary so glad to sew your happy face. Your flannel dress and slippers are so fitting for recovery. Was the shawl something you had. Rick did a get job of making a meal for you. I like it when menfolk help. They learn to appreciate what we do and the effort it takes. Be careful in your recovery!
Made a panel to hang outside. Finished the Hexie top only and gave to my sister for a charity quilt and made a Dalmatian mug rug for my grandson as he wasn’t getting a real puppy for his birthday. Will send pictures of them.

Rita – Rose who is a reader made it for me and I don’t know yarns but it is simply lucious! Hopefully Rose will read this and leave the info.

Yesterday at church, I was admiring a lady in front of me wearing a beautiful red wool vest. Went home and found a nice piece of red plain Pendleton wool. (don’t ask me how old it was…) I went to Joanne’s to look for a vest pattern. Did not find one, but you should see the pages and pages of “vintage” fashion patterns. All the way from the 50’s to Gunne Sax patterns from the 70’s. Even some of the current patterns were throw backs to patterns we made in the late 60’s to the 70’s when I was in high school and sewing all my clothes. Comfy dresses with Little House on the Prairie vibes. The good ole days!
You look fabulous and hope you are feeling better every day!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Diana – I think we should all start the “bring back the old dresses” trend. I couldn’t even bear to get rid of them – they’re all hanging in the storeroom – many denim jumpers!!!

  9. Alice in SW OH

Mary, love your flannel dress! Even the colors are beautiful on you! I’m so glad you responded to the survey, but am wondering if this is a 3rd party & not the hospital taking care of this! As many have said, I think I would follow up with your doctors & etc! Just remember the squeaky wheel gets the grease! Things need to be addressed at Mayo on their treatment of patients! Love the table cover, I have several I use. That wreath is so pretty, too! My outdoor wreaths all need new bows & I plan to make new bows for them today. So glad you are doing so well, Mary! We all do much better at home among our favorite things & fur babies! And Hazel & Keeper & your kitties are so happy momma’s back home!! And so are all of us!

  10. Pat in AZ

Mary, the dress looks so snuggly cuddly warm and it looks great on you. The picture of you with the wreath is perfect.

  11. Fran Dixon

So glad to see and hear you are feeling better. Loved the photos this morning.

It was crazy 5 days with family and traveling. Thank goodness my daughter was driving my car as I could not handle all the traffic on I-80. We got into snow west of Clive but glad the traffic thinned out. Very little snow here and spitting a few flakes here this morning. When I drove to Bellevue I go across on 20 or 30. Theyn think it takes less time on I 80 but it really doesn’t. I got to snuggle all 3 new great grandbabies, one being just 2 weeks old. Dinner was great in the Air B&B.

OK loaded a quilt for quilting and ready for sewing room time!

  12. Dee from Mo

Mary you look great !! I also love the flannel dress. You can make your own style. I like wearing clothes that are different than everything you see in the stores but have no desire to sew clothes! Lol. Only quilts. Prayers for continued healing.

  13. Kelli in Ohio

SOOOOO good to “see”you Mary!! I continue to pray for your recovery. Absolutely love the flannel dress – so glad you had it in your closet 👏 yes, I wish they would come back in style. Hazel is such a cutie – I know she drives you crazy at times but they are still such wonderful medicine for us 🐕.

  14. Kathy in western NY

Mary you have such a good group of people near you that check in and care for you. Hanks mom, Sam, Becky, Rick and you had Gloria pay you a visit. I’m sure your church family misses your music during this season.
You look so good and I’m thinking all these years of being healthy is in your genes. Funny I just bought a pink plaid flannel nightgown just like your dress. We had to go to the finger lakes area last week for a part for my Bernina machine and I saw the amish had sewn these nightgowns so well that I had to own one to wear. Glad to see your smiling face.
Luckily we missed out on the snow event as west and east of us got the big amounts.

  15. Donna Jo

Mary you look great; not like someone who just had surgery! Love your plaid dress and all the pictures today!

  16. Karen

Your dress looks comfy and cozy for a cold day. Perfect after surgery dress! It also looks easy to get on and off. Thanks for sharing your life with us.

  17. Brenda in Georgia

So heartwarming to see you looking marvelous! I love all the lovely photos. Thanks so much!

  18. Sally J. Melchert

You’re looking so good Mary. Love the dress and slippers.
Not good news from me. I’ve been in the hospital since Thanksgiving evening. Heart attack. 3 blocked arteries. Having stent placement today and also on Wednesday.
    Prayers would be appreciated.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sally – oh my gosh, Sally! We are all so sorry! Here we go – please put your address in a comment so I can send you a card.😉

    2. Jan Hebert in MA

Oh, Sally, how terrible! I hope the stent procedure goes well and you are able to be home soon. This is something on my mind as I have afib and my doctor wants me on a blood thinner. I really don’t want to go on a thinner for the rest of my life – I’m 71 – but I don’t want a stroke or heart attack either! I’m glad that you’re well enough to write to us. Will definitely be praying for your complete recovery. Jan in MA

    3. Rita in iowa

Sally so sorry to hear about your heart issues. Glad you are having things taken care of and all goes well. Saying lots of prayers for you

  19. Jean

Mary! You look so good…and healthy! It appears Rick is quite the good caretaker. Each day will keep getting you closer to complete wellness. No appetite after 10 days of starving?

Oh mon Dieu ! Quelle jolie robe que vous avez !
Il se dit que lorsque l’on s’habille à la mode, on est déjà démodé.
    Bon rétablissement

loved the post tonight with all the pictures. especially loved seeing you looking so chipper and well. being home is healing in its own right. all the photos are just luscious.
long day for me trying to cram too much into one day. the challenge quilt rows are made with their sashing. the sashing is all made. tomorrow means pinning and putting the rows together. hope to get it done or at least super close. then border, binding and backing. have doc appt on tuesday so that will kill most of that day. don’t want to leave everything to thursday but want it done. it looks so much like my recent pineapple blossom – same pattern in blues. i used cream prints (two of them) and blues for cornerstones. totally different than mine but i like it. figure it will come in about 58×68 when done. i don’t want to add a border but challenge requirements means i have to add 3 fabrics so it will need a border. will get a bit creative with the backing. meeting starts early on friday so must get with it.
so glad to see you home. hugs, patti in florida

Great pictures today. Love the flannel dress. So comfy. What a lovely wreath. Your picnic quilt is so pretty and Michelle’s is lovely too. Glad she came to visit with Hank.
I’ve been following the lake effect snow along Lake Erie And now I’m watching the Buffalo Bills and the 49ers in the snow! Brings back memories when I lived in Conneaut Ohio, on the lake in 1978.
Thinking about the readers in Ohio, PA and northern NY.
    Stay safe..

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Carolyn – that looked like a mess in Buffalo, didn’t it? Our Iowa State team played last night in 7 degree weather in Ames, Iowa.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jan – haha! If I don’t have them on, I’m barefoot – don’t worry, my floors have heat.

  25. Joyce from NY

Mary you look so good, that flannel dress is just perfect & your slippers will keep you smiling. The wreath is beautiful!!

  26. Candy

I just have to say how well you look, and I love your beautiful wreath! Your ‘new’ plaid dress looks so comfy, and it reminded me of the jumper you wore for the Quilt Sampler magazine photo shoot … of course, I just had to go dig into my collection of Quilt Sampler magazines to be sure, lol! That was the first issue, wasn’t it? I have them all, but only get them out when I’m looking for something special (like today). Good job, Rick, making breakfast. I’m glad you’re able to eat some real food, Mary. Take care!

  27. Nancy J.

If you love the dress…wear it!!! Who cares about style. Glad you gave it to Mayo! You go, girl! 👍🏻

  28. Sharon F

Have a very Happy Birthday Sandy in NZ!

Mary, you are looking very well for so soon post surgery! So good to see you up and sporting your pretty but comfortable flannel dress. I think Rick deserves kudos for that tasty and filling breakfast. I hope he cleaned up after it too 😄

I was making such good progress quilting the baby quilt for my friend’s first grandchild. Right up until my sewing machine froze; I can’t even turn the handwheel. I cleaned it and looked everywhere I could see for a thread, but nothing. So frustrating! Nothing to do but take it in for service and hope it can be fixed quickly. It is 24 years old, but up until this incident sewed perfectly.

    1. Li

Doublecheck that the bobbin is seated correctly.
      Just to be sure, rethread.
I understand older Viking sewing machines–the grease hardens. Not sure that can be fixed.

  29. Susy in San Diego

Mary, I don’t have time right now to say much, other than… You look fabulous! You really do. I have a very good feeling you are going to heal up sooooooo quickly. And your dress, yes it’s perfect. It’s just what you needed right now. Kudo’s to Chef Rick! Yum.
    Hugs, Susy

Sandy – it’s Monday there already, isn’t it? Because I thought you said your birthday was Tuesday. So here’s an early Happy Birthday!!

      1. Sandy

Thank you Mary, it’s Monday evening now,9.40pm, so tomorrow, Tuesday is my birthday, 3rd December, 75! How did l get so old?

        1. Gloria from CC

Happy Birthday Sandy! I turned 75 in August – I feel like I’m in my 20’s but then I look in the mirror and ask myself who is that old woman?

  31. Gail in Ohio

It does my heart good to see a pic of you standing by the door in that dress – proof you are on the mend! Here’s to a complete and speedy recovery! Glad to hear you have such good friends to support you too…
My Sweet Adelines Chorus sang for the tree lighting today – pretty chilly, but some snow flurries started right on cue to make it look Christmasy. We have several more performances in the next few weeks – Christmas will be here before we know it. By that time I’m hoping you feel bunches better!

  32. Jeanine from SE iowa

    Mary,
You are looking so good! I’m so glad you are home and recuperating.
Tonight at church we had a “Hanging of the Greens” service. It was so fun, and so many people involved, and when the lights all came on at the end of the service, it was just beautiful. This is the third year we have done this. We are all ready for Christmas.
I enjoyed all the pictures. The chickens and plates are so unique. Won’t you be afraid that it will get blown over and break if you put it outside next summer? We have so much wind here.
Take care of yourself, and be still.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jeanine – I will put it in a protected area – such as my entry where there’s a table I decorate year round.

  33. Sue in Marion, IN

Mary, you’re looking great! There’s nothing better for your morale than being surrounded by your animals!

  34. Jo in Wyoming

Mary, you look great and so happy to be home. Hazel looks thrilled to have you home too.
Let Rick continue to cook. It’s the least he can do.
Your dress is perfect…and at such a great price.
    The wreath is beautiful.

On your survey, ask what changes your answers will make.

  35. Lora in Clear Lake

    Hi Mary-
So great to see you smiling and looking so good at home! Love your wreath- so pretty. We hosted Thanksgiving at our house. It was a hard one for my Dad but the grands brightened the mood. We took our annual picture with them under our tree with some funny results. I will send you some pictures. Keep taking good care of yourself!

  36. Chris in NW PA

    Mary,
You look so good. Glad to see you up and about. The plaid dress is so comfortable.
It’s perfect for recovering from surgery. Just keep resting and building up your
    strength.

  37. Paula S.

Mary, you look great! I think the dress you’re wearing is the perfect wintertime lounge dress. I probably couldn’t sleep in it as it would be too hot for me! Ha!

  38. Carmen

So glad to see you up and about! I love the plaid flannel you are wearing, looks so warm and comfy!
I love both your picnic quilts, it’s perfect on the wall, but I guess I would be worried to use it as a tablecloth as something could get spilled on it. it’s too beautiful for it to get a stain?
    The wreath is just gorgeous!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Carmen – not a tablecloth! A tablecover, a centerpiece when the table is not in use – with a poinsettia in the middle, maybe? So pretty!

  39. Barb K

So glad to see that you are feeling better, Mary! Love all your animal (and chicken) decorations as well as your real animals–Hazel is just the cutest and has a good buddy with Keeper!!
Here in north central Nebraska we have a little snow on the ground-not too much but pretty chilly. Keep getting better–thinking about you!!

  40. DebMac

You’re looking great, Mary! Hope you are feeling great as well. I have to admit that your dress looks very much like my LL Bean flannel nightgowns. But your are very stylish with your coordinating slippers and shawl. It’s not a flattering style for me for public wear but I am all for bring back jumpers. I loved them, tank tops underneath in summer and long sleeve turtlenecks and tights in winter.
Started decorating for Christmas today. Not much accomplished since I’m fighting a cold/virus but the nap was helpful. Hope you are getting plenty of rest. Stay warm.

  41. Vicki in Seattle

Mary, you look great!!! Thanks to Michele for taking the pics. Loved seeing her quilts too. Glad the dogs had a play date today. Your wreath is gorgeous. The photo of you standing by it should be used for advertising them!!
Take care and stay safe and warm!💙
