A Good Day, 2-4-26

After a great night’s sleep, I made a visit to my chiropractor to keep that hip aligned and then my cleaning gal came to help me out. Yes, a good day. I worked on my plants – I’m moving some of them – I think the lights are too intense.

Took the dogs to the edge of the grove to let them run off some energy – just FYI – I did not stomp through the snowbanks which would be very hard on my hips.

Then I thought I’d stop by the wood shed. Tim’s head popped out of his box!!!! I had a can of food in my pocket that I emptied into his bowl. His ear doesn’t look any worse than the last time I saw it but it doesn’t look any better either. No antibiotic in that food so I’ll try tomorrow.

Got a note from Beverly Weaver’s daughter, Becky:

Mary, sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner. I’ve been under the weather and didn’t want to expose Mom, but I did go see her today.

She’s been amazed by and grateful for all the cards! 46 cards from 23 states, and most took the time to write a note and some even sent cute little handmade gifts. It truly has given her hours of pleasure. One writer is from the small town of Castle Rock, WA, where Mom’s mother lived for many years. What a coincidence!

Mom is feeling good. The bruising is pretty well gone and she’s getting around more easily. She’s back quilting and below is a picture of the one she’s working on now. She and I can’t thank your readers enough for their thoughtfulness and it’s been eye-opening to see what a difference it makes to a person’s morale.

Becky

Did I forget to post the picture of my new purse?

Don’t you just love it?
A friend’s plants

Mystery – I tried to find out who Marie and Kirby in So. Cal was in last night’s post. They sent me this fantastic fabric – yes, I think I have all the plants and every one of those cats!

Obviously she’s a blog reader and I have her mailing address to send a note but I can’t place the two names. Please understand there are hundreds of you out there. I wanted to show all of you the fabric – now what will I do with it?????

Brenda – how are you doing tonight? I’m thinking of you.

Mary, I may have figured out why I can’t comment. Possibly in your list of blocked emails is my email? I’m trying to comment using a different email address. We shall see if it works.

    1. Teresa from Maple Ridge, BC

And it did work. Totally weird. I don’t get it.

I’d like to say I’ve enjoyed all the pictures shared for the past week. I’ve been busy painting my sewing room and yesterday my son and I installed the laminate floors. I started to put things back and will send a picture when I’m done. It looks so much better now it is painted an off white instead of a dark caramel colour.

Ok, it was just a thought. I had sent myself an email with a recipe and when I received the email it said it was from a blocked contact. Somehow I had blocked myself from sending an email to myself. I’ve fixed that. Anyways I figured it out and I’m glad I can keep in touch using a different email. Funny how I felt cut off without being able to comment.

Teresa – I do understand – you are part of a close k it group of ladies and we would miss you!!

  2. Joy in NW Iowa

Mary, I’m so happy Tim showed up! He will heal up! He’s not battered anywhere else. I cannot believe how much snow you have. We r only two hours west of you and have NONE!
I have one question, when you take prednisone, do you sleep? I cannot sleep for nothing! Ugh!
    Love all the quilts, etc.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – those huge snowbanks are misleading – we have hardly any snow at all in the yard but the wind from the northwest has nothing to stop the snow until it gets to our grove and chain link fence. Then it stops. I usually love to walk on top of those drifts but wouldn’t be good for my hips this year.
I have no problem sleeping with Prednisone probably because I’m already taking sleeping aids.

  3. Arlene in Colorado

Hi Mary, Glad to hear you’re feeling better. Wish you could send some of your stacked snow to us in CO! I was so happy to see your pic of Tim…what a sweet boy. How do you suppose he tore his ear up like that? He escaped something nasty didn’t he. I’m forced to use my IPAD as my computer went to the wizard today to have everything transferred to a new one! You can only imagine the learning curve to figure out how to run it!!! I’m too old for this crap! (Using a nice word for all of the fine ladies on your blog). Your new purse is so YOU! We love you because you have loved so many…My daughter has been diagnosed with breast CA and now they feel it is in the OTHER breast! Why the hell they didn’t do CT on both at the same time would have seemed logical (as they are sisters and go together on her chest) Kaiser makes a patient jump through one hoop after another. Can you tell I’m just sick over this. They should have done biopsies of lymph nodes in both armpits but no. This waiting is destroying her confidence in medicine. Her original mammogram was the end of Oct. and here we are into Feb. She wants a bilateral mastectomy to get rid of it all. Looks like chemo may follow. I have lost my faith Mary, it should have been me. She is raising her grandson and needs to be around for him…and us. She has been nothing but good her entire life. Prayers are welcome. God bless you Mary for all that you give of yourself…

    1. Connie R. In Wis.

Arlene, So sorry your daughter is going through this breast cancer diagnosis again. I can certainly understand why she may be questioning the health care system. I also feel your pain for her. I would feel exactly the same in your position. I will pray for both of you.

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Arlene – oh, your poor daughter! I agree – why didn’t they check everything at the time? I am so sorry – why wouldn’t she have lost faith in her medical team?
Tim was gone today again. He’s a tomcat so I’m sure he fought with another tom – nobody that lives here.
You know I just recently got a new IPad and recently discovered Verizon failed to transfer my Pinterest account. I’m upset about it for sure and have to go back to them for help. I am too old as well – every time WordPress has a new operating system automatically installed I’m lost. I’ve always said that the real reason old people don’t care if they die is because everything gets too hard. I’m beginning to understand.
We only have those snowbanks in the grove because of the high winds and nothing to stop the blowing snow from the next county – until it hits our grove.

    3. Rita in Iowa

Arlene so sorry that your daughter has to go through all this. My Daughter, Kim, also went through breast cancer. She is 42 and had both breasts removed. Had two sessions of chemo. One for three months every other week that was very strong. And then another session but I can remember how frequent it was. She then had reconstructive surgery, not implants where they used fat from her stomach for the reconstructive of her breast. She recently had the nipples tattooed. She is cancer free at this point and we keep praying it stays that way. I will pray for your daughter that she too will get through this.

      1. Mary Etherington Post author

Rita -after reading about Arlene’s daughter I immediately thought of Kim! I think I sorta forgot where she was in her treatment – the last I remember was the double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. Obviously I forgot to ask!! I, too, pray she stays cancer free!! I m so sorry for both you and Arlene and your daughters.

  4. Jeanne in Co

Forgot to say, but the basket wallhanging that is shown on today’s blog is only 46”x 52”, the actual Anna’s Basket Quilt Pattern, using all 8 patterns is 73”by 79”. I repeated several of the basket blocks from the three patterns I used and arranged them to fit the dimensions I wanted.

  5. Dot in NC

A good night’s sleep is a wonderful thing!

I love today’s quilts. Those basket quilt patterns are expensive; many of the baskets are traditional blocks with free patterns available on the internet. But you’re paying for her to do the math to create a variety of block sizes that will fit together, to calculate cutting sizes for the patches, to select a color palette, and to show the steps for easy construction. I enjoy doing quilt math, but others don’t.

And yay! Tim showed up! Glad his ear is no worse. I’m reminded of what a vet told me years ago, while treating one of my cats: “Cats are good healers. They told us at vet school that if you could get all the parts in the same room, the cat will likely recover.”

Barbara in Columbia, SC: Your “Broken crayons still color” will cheer me up when I feel down or tired or old. I can still color!

  6. Erin

It’s great to see the update about Tim. I hope he keeps coming around so you can slip him some antibiotic.

The card showers are just wonderful. What nice folks you have as readers – they are doers, too!

Oh, that basket quilt! It’s so sweet. I think I saw a pattern for it not long ago but can’t remember where.

I pray your hips feel better quickly.

  7. Jeanne in co.

Thanks for all the comments on the basket wallhanging. I did not buy all of the patterns that were available. I only bought three of them. I then made as many of each basket or a variation of them, as I wanted. Some of the fabric was in my stash already, and yes, it was Laundry Basket quilt fabric. But I used my own backgrounds and added a lot of my own prints. Added a second handle to the large laundry basket on the bottom row, and basically arranged them as I wanted. It was a fun project, not nearly as large as the whole quilt that includes all 8 patterns. Jeanne in Co

    1. Sharon F

Your quilt is very beautiful, Jeanne. Thanks for explaining how you made it, a very creative way to make your own version much less expensively than buying the entire original set of patterns.

  8. Teresa in Indiana

Hi Mary! Love your new purse! It’s perfect for you. I’m loving the basket quilt. It’s another one that I won’t even start. And your fabric is so fun. Any ideas what you’re thinking about making with it? Have a good day and continue to feel better. 💕

  9. Marie & Kirby from So. Cal.

Hi Mary! So glad you like the fabric! When I saw it , I knew I had to get some for you! I believe it also comes in a dog version! I ordered it from “Hawthorne Threads”. Spoiled Miss Kirby has made a bed of my half yards so I have some time to decide what to do!! So glad to see Tim is hanging around, he is such a handsome boy!
When you asked , I couldn’t remember how I “signed to the blog” so now we’ll be “Marie & Kirby from So. Cal. since she is ALWAYS reading with me!! Happy Thursday to ya’ll!

  10. Frances E

I’m so glad you found Tim. He is such a beautiful cat. I agree with others, he does love you. The fabric was made for you. We’ll all love to see what you do with it.

  11. Francine Fagan

The Basket Quilt is from Laundry Basket Quilt Co. It was a block of month pattern over 8 months at $9.95 each month. Each month has a lot in it. That’s how it is put out. It sure is beautiful. 44 days till Spring. Yeah

    1. Erin

Thank you for posting the name of the pattern. I nearly bought it but finally admitted I would probably never get it done.

  12. Janet S

The basket quilt is definitely a stunner but there is no way I’m spending $80. for a pattern. Mary, that’s a perfect purse for you – enjoy it. Next Monday I’m having surgery on a tendon in my pinky finger. It will be an in-and-out but my hand will probably be out of service for a time. Oh well, that’s a small price to pay. Last summer I had knee replacement – it was a breeze. Now I’m thinking my 100,000 warranty is coming to an end – I’ll ask my doctor what he thinks. Today we will have a high temp. of 39 – yah! Then back below freezing. This is a wonderful blog ladies so keep it up and thank you.
    Have a great day.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Janet – well, dang! My knees have been great and I’m so thankful – it’s been 7 years now. Looking forward to the next few days of higher temps. Yes, this blog is so fun but only when many take part in the conversation. It’s almost unfair that many can just enjoy it and not commit to being a part of it. If I ever find a way to stop that, I will.

      1. Jeanine from SE iowa

Mary – I can’t believe it has been 7 years since your knee surgeries! Time sure does fly by!

  13. Barbara in Columbia, SC

I have been up in Asheville. NC for the past few days babysitting my grandson Wilder while my daughter and her husband are in Mexico. I’m amazed seeing all the construction still going on from that terrible hurricane. Many homes and businesses are just shells still. Tree damage on the mountains is terrible in many places. I don’t know how you even get that cleaned up. Food for thought: Broken crayons still color. That inspires hope.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Barbara – how’s Snooky? And Wilder, of course. You’ll never see complete reconstruction in your lifetime probably. Such a terrible loss for so many – and those poor people!! Love “broken crayons still color”.

      1. Barbara in Columbia, SC

Mary, Snooky is loving all the special attention. She follows me wherever I go, even in to take a shower! Hehe. Wilder is a handful; I’m just getting too old. I’ll be 73 on the 11th this month.

  14. Pamela Dempsey in Northeast Texas 😻

    What an adorable purse!
Glad the med is helping you feel better so you can sleep! I’m glad you found Tim again, sweet guy. Hugs! 🤗

  15. Jean

To the person who made the quilt Anna’s baskets. I LOVE quilt but edyta sitar charges $80.00 (yes $80) for the pattern! If you are through with the pattern could I purchase it from you for a more reasonable price? Oh gosh even the thought of making that quilt excites me.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jean – you’re kidding! That’s a lot of money but being who she is I guess she can ask whatever she chooses. It’s a wonderful quilt

      1. Jean

Yes Mary she can charge whatever she wants but I don’t think it’s right just because she can. $80! Good grief. I just have to let it go.

  16. Cindy Smith

Hope you can stay ahead of body ailments. Cute purse and that fabric is perfect for you. I had hip replacement yesterday and so far it’s not terrible. The plan is to have two PT sessions today and head for home. I’ve arranged home PT until I can drive. I like having my independence and don’t like to bother folks.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Cindy – so many have had hip replacements – hope yours goes well. Ive always felt the same independence as you describe until the past year when it all seemed to fall apart at once.

  17. Jo in Wyoming

Mary…please send some of that snow to us in Wyoming. We’ve had 1” so far this year!!!
In the past, you tied a ribbon at the top of the drift. I think that’s a great idea, but we haven’t had enough to make a drift.
So glad you are better. Don’t do anything to mess that up.
I’m glad Tim popped out to see you. He is hanging around cuz he knows you love him.
#4 at my house will be taxes. Yuck, but after that I can do some sewing.

PS…you can airmail some snow out here!!!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jo – it’s funny – we don’t really have much snow. It the fierce northwest wind blows it into the grove where it stops. I won’t be able to tie a ribbon this year because I can’t tromp through all that snow – even tho some of it is hard as a rock, reaching it wouldn’t be good on my hips.

  18. Candy

Hi, Mary! One of my favorite quilts I have made consists of 10” squares of a gorgeous floral print that I didn’t want to cut up, alternated with 25-patch blocks (using 2” squares). The 25-patch blocks are made up of miscellaneous colors that coordinate with the floral print. So easy, but it’s a great way to keep a large print intact. I’m sure whatever you make will be beautiful with the fabrics you were gifted. Glad you’re feeling better!

  19. Sharon G.

Mary – I’ll take the fabric if you don’t want it! 😂
    Just kidding!
Glad Tim is around and you were able to feed him and at least get a glance at his ear.
So sweet to see all the cards for Brenda.
Going in for an ultrasound tomorrow. Dreading it but the mammogram showed something new. Maybe it was a shadow! 🙏

    Take care everyone.

  20. Sheryl Harrison

Your new purse is so cute! I love the basket quilt. Every time I see that quilt, I want to order the pattern. I’m trying to use what I have.
Thank you, Brenda, for your updates. Prayers for a complete recovery.

  21. Colleen in Central Oregon

Love the purse! The quilts are wonderful, I especially love the one with all the different baskets!

  22. Brenda in SE Iowa

    Hi Mary,
I’ll write here since you were thinking of me tonight – for which I thank you. (I responded to several on yesterday’s post). I went to the ENT doctor yesterday. It looks like I’m going to need to have nasal surgery. The cartilage inside is accordioned and may cause me difficulties in the future. However, that will NOT occur until my neurosurgeon has completely assured me that my neck is healed. Sleeping can be difficult but we all have that difficulty, don’t we? The bruising is much less and will eventually dissipate. My forehead is less painful. Thanks for asking about me.

  23. Mary in So. Ca.

I am happy to hear you got a good nights sleep. You might be on the road to recovery!! I bet your guys were happy to
run around and get some fresh air.
The two cat fabrics are wonderful. I do love cats! Speaking of cats….sensing healing prayers to Tim.
Is that the magic purse where you found that money stash?
    Have a great evening!
    Mary in So Ca.

  24. Kara Krantz

My sister-in-law said there is an antibiotic in kitten formula. You could try putting some of that in a bowl for Tim. Glad you aren’t in as much pain now. Hugs, Kara
