I’m getting ready for church but I know you’re wondering about Alfalfa. I called the vet Saturday morning and he euthanized the poor old guy. Now to wait for the guy with a backhoe to dig a hole so we can bury him. Reed and I went to the quilt show late but we enjoyed it so much. I’ll show you pictures later. Connie left for the cruise which will leave Galveston today. More from her later, too. Off to church – it’s confirmation Sunday which means a huge crowd of family attending. Texas Tech won last night in a thriller game!
I am so sorry about Alfalfa Mary. We love them so much and it hurts just as much to let them go. I am sure Alfalfa had a wonderful life with you. Pets teach us how to love. ♥️
Losing one of our animals is never easy, I am sorry for your loss.
Go Red Raiders!!!!! Not a sports fan per say, but must admit have gotten caught up in these games.
Mary,
Please consider yourself receiving a bunch of comforting hugs from your numerous blog friends today!
Alfalfa is resting peacefully now! Know he will miss your love and kindness.
You certainly had a busy day with both games and the quilt show. Looking forward to the pictures you share! I managed to cut my version of Prairie Patches from the Quirky book using a few stash and scrap fabrics yesterday. Received three little snows yesterday late afternoon. Old man winter hasn’t given up yet; still sending his winter mix up here.
Sorry for your loss, Mary. It was the humane thing to do. I’m sure Alfalfa lived a happy life there with you and Rick. We are enjoying another beautiful spring day here in Massachusetts. It’s cool but the wind has died down so we will be raking again today. This is the earliest we have gotten the yard raked in years! We have lots of oak and hickory trees along the stone wall and we try to rake the inside and the outside of the wall to make it look it’s best. Love seeing the old stone in the walls. Amazing. There is even one that I swear, looks like a ladies bum sitting on top of a huge stone, lol. It takes many trips to the leaf pile to clear 400′ of stone wall! Jan in Topsfield, MA
Losing a beloved animal is always heartbreaking…but thank heaven for letting us have and love them in the first place ! And how lucky are those who found a home with you!
Those two games yesterday were just the best! And classy coaches with handling difficult painful losses. Sewing and watching NCAA is my favorite part of the year. Just fun! It is a long wait now until it returns.
Carrolyn – weren’t those games fantastic to watch ! I was actually pulling for Auburn and they would have won if the refs had called that double dribble on Jerome! By midnight Monday I’ll be in basketball withdrawal for another year. March Madness is my favorite time of year – and yours, too, I think! It’s Asha’s birthday today, isn’t it? I hope she models her new dress!
I am so sorry to hear about Alfalfa but I have a story that might bring a smile to your face. My cousin Tim (Timothy) was my age. A few years later his brother was born and my aunt & uncle named him Kirk but my uncle thought it would be funny to call him Buckwheat as a nickname. My aunt didn’t think it would stick so she didn’t make a fuss. Practically everyone except my aunt called him Buck or Buckwheat for his whole life. A few years later little brother Jimmy came along and silly Uncle John started calling him Alfalfa. My aunt put her foot down hard and Jimmy remained Jimmy. Buckwheat sadly was killed in an accident as a teenager and another cousin used “Buck” as a middle name for his first born son in his honor so the name goes on. Are you smiling yet?
Susan – yes, I am smiling! It’s such a wonderful story…until Buck is killed so young. It nice his name lives on! Thanks so much!!!
Have a blessed Sunday. I am sorry about Alfalfa but he is at peace.
The final game on Monday should be really good as both semi games were nail biters. Glad I don’t have a bad heart.
Sorry about the loss of your animal-never easy. Great Texas Tech win, if only Auburn could have held on for the victory!
I’m so sorry about Alfalfa. It’s never easy to lose a friend.
So sorry about Alfalfa. Your a good Mom for all your animals He was loved and well taken care of on the farm. He lived a wonderful life at Country Threads!!
That is very sad about Alfalfa, but it was kind to have the vet come.
I am not a Michigan fan, but rooted for MSU because one of the players went to the HS where our daughter teaches. I always think about how young these players are and they work so hard to win. Good luck to both teams on Monday.
How old was Alfalfa? Was he a rescue? How long did he live with you?
I’m very grateful we can call the vet in times like this.
It’s hard…please know we all are sending hugs and kisses.
Jo in Wyoming – found some old photos of Buckwheat and Alfalfa – the date on the back is March, 02! They are old goats and I don’t think Buckwheat will last long since his brother is gone. They were inseparable!
Yeah, Texas Tech, awesome game, from a Texan.
I don’t comment much, but truly enjoy your post.
I think Reed will be a wonderful quilter & farmer with animals.
Hugs Linda
I’m so sorry for the loss of Alfalfa. I’m glad he didn’t have to suffer any more, but it hurts so much to lose our babies. I’m glad you and Reed had a good time at the quilt show and that Texas Tech is in the finals!!
So sorry to read about the loss of Alfalfa but you did the loving thing to call the vet and put her out of her pain and discomfort. Never an easy decision. I’m glad you had the quilt show to go to with Reed. A sweet thing for a sad day!
Mary, I am finally caught up on blog again! So sorry about Alfalfa but I am glad the vet came, I know you probably were not resting knowing the inevitable. Love Jim’s shirt quilts, you did a remarkable job and she will love them & your kindness! The tree & the wind, wow, here in Kansas City we had that wind also. Had a lot of down branches in January due to heavy snow & the winds keep bringing down more (dead) limbs & sticks. My lawn company is making a fortune off me this year between plowing & yard clean up! I also watch Jimmy Kimmel & loved his Gonzaga monologue this year. So that brings us to tomorrow night! As a Kansas State alum, I always cheer for the Big 12 (mostly 🙂 ). So proud of Texas Tech making it to the championship. Did you catch the cameras showing Patrick Mahomes QB of Kansas City Chiefs? He was having so much fun. He had been on Jimmy Fallon & Fallon was acting as if he had picked Tech to be in the Final 4 & Mahomes response was he thought he was the only one. No Sir, I did also! Which leads me to my dilemma……the pool I am entered, my brother is currently 3rd & I am 5th & a friend 17th out of 55 entries. That is how we will finish if Tech wins. A 5th place will win me about $50 for my $20 entry. If Virginia wins, my brother finishes first, I finish 2nd & my friend 4th. My winnings increase to $250 (a lot of fabric!). Only 4 of the 55 picked Virginia to win, my brother, friend, myself are 3 of the 4 & you can’t see anyone else’s brackets until after the games begin (it’s an online system). What are the chances? Do I root for the Big 12 or Fabric money??? As a basketball fan, this years tournament has been great. Sometimes many of the games are blowouts but this year has been very exciting it seems to me. I wonder if changing how they select the teams made a difference? I put myself in a fake meeting at work tomorrow afternoon on my calendar so I can be sure to leave on time to watch the whole game!!

I am so sorry about the loss of Alfafa. I know how hard it is to lose a pet.
I enjoy your comments about March Madness. I live in Spokane and we were SO SORRY to see Gonzaga lose. What a disappointment! But Texas Tech is quite a team. Also am interested in Virginia, because Tony Bennett coached at WSU and was so good there. It all makes it more interesting.
I took a class from you and Mary when you taught a Mystery Class at the Buggy Barn, years ago. It is on the bed in our now office/guest room. And I have many of your books and have made several of your quilts.
I do enjoy your blog. Thanks for that!
Carol Nichols – wasn’t Jimmy Kimmel so funny with his Gonzaga monologue? I remember being at the Buggy Barn – boy, we go way back, don’t we? I always wonder if Tony Bennett’s parents knew they were naming their baby after a singer? Tonight’s game should be good!
Mary, I am sending you hugs, our animals are truly family and when their time to go comes, they break our hearts. I feel bad for his brother, animals feel the separation as well as we do.
May you feel peace in your heart knowing that you gave Alfalfa a good life. That Hazel is not shy at all. Take care, Mary.
Mary you did the right thing taking care of Alfalfa, I’m sure he had a wonderful life in your care and gave you love and joy in return.
