A Quilt For Mortie, 11-26-25

Doesn’t every little ginger cat need her own quilt?

Reader photos

There might not be a blog post tomorrow night – I probably won’t have received any reader photos on the holiday so enjoy that wonderful meal and spending time with your families.

Happy Thanksgiving, Mary. Love the photo that shows repurposing hand embroidery pieces – great way to use them.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone….a day late. Sorry just didn’t have a spare minute yesterday getting things ready for the get together! Our Michigan family chose to stay in Michigan. I am thankful for them not traveling the dangerous roads. Plus, with the winter 🥶 ❄️ etc, coming, I am a nervous wreck. Us mamas need to know everyone is safe in their own home, right?
Diana in Des Moines, your project bags are so adorable! Such a neat way to show off the beautiful dresser scarves we have in the cedar chests! All the quilts are really cool!
And then there is the star of Mary’s blog……Mortie! So adorable and cute and loved by all of us!
Thank you Mary for bringing us all together!

Joy – your Michigan kids chose wisely – at this point none of us know how bad it will be or if it doesn’t materialize to the extent our weathermen are warning us about. It was a busy day – just to eat. I’m not sure it’s worth it. I was exhausted.

Happy Thanksgiving, Mary! It’s all football here today, with some breathers in my sewing room, lol! I love Mortie’s little quilt … so sweet… just like Mortie! Have a great day!

Happy Thanksgiving to all in Mary Etherington land. I love reading about everyone and seeing all the beautiful quilts and all the animals, especially Hazel and Mortie. That dog with the scarf is beautiful. Due to various illnesses and circumstances, no family gatherings this holiday. I will go for a short while to the local fire station pot luck. I appreciate being invited by a close firefighter neighbor! Good wishes to all!

Happy Thanksgiving 🍁 everyone! Darrell and I worked 2hours yesterday pounding black walnuts through smaller holes cut in a board to get the hulls off. That’s all our backs and arms could take. My gloves must have a hole, my fingers are stained and I have a blister. Next step is power washing the nuts and then drying a couple of months. We love black walnuts and were so excited when we moved here 3 years ago. We still have more on the ground so this is a bumper crop. We will be back at it tomorrow, hope we hold up!
Love the modern ring quilt and especially Miss Mortie on her kitty quilt! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Oh my gosh Sweet Mortie! I keep her pics on my phone & share with my Sister in Los Angeles ( who volunteers at local wild animal rescue) Anyway we are both in love with Mortie. I too have that fabric in flannel ( old) Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 Mary & Family. You are a Blessing to many

Great pictures today – the project bags and Christmas stockings are beautiful! And I love Mortie’s quilt. I remember my mother telling me long ago that all orange cats are male. She would get a kick out of little Mortie!
I hope everyone has a happy Thanksgiving. I’m smoking a chicken later today – it’s in the brine now.

The project bags are zipper bags and are used to hold hand work, a book or a kindle, and some larger ones for knitting projects. I make several for our Christmas church sale, and I also make them for the quilt museum in Winterset Iowa where they sell them in their gift shop. I pick up old lace and embroidered projects at the thrift stores during the year. Usually pretty cheap and abundant. I love making these and can easily get carried away!
The turkey pillows were seen on Pinterest and since I have cutter quilts and old Dresden blocks, thought I would try. They sold quickly, now need to make one for myself.
Happy Thanksgiving to all. I feel like we are all friends who just haven’t met yet!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Hope everyone’s day is filled with happiness and fun! So glad Mortie has a quilt! All of our cats have their own quilts. Love the quilt with the houses. It makes the houses shine.

Bea – if only I could! Winter hit hard and if the weatherman is right, snow is coming tomorrow night.
Thanksgiving hugs to Eunice, Canoli and Casey!

Bea – at market I’d ask our customers about their dogs – by name! But I couldn’t remember the person’s name!

Ce quilt est fait pour mettre Mortie en valeur. Il est tellement mignon et chanceux . Bonne fête de Thanksgiving à toutes et tous

I would appreciate knowing the names of two quilts in tonight’s blog. The first one is the first photo of readers quilts; it is the one with houses and colored rows (grass and streets) and the other one is the last photo that looks like colored rings. I would love to make both of these patterns. Thank you to the people/ readers who made them to share their names with me!
Happy Thanksgiving! And as I use to tell my students “Don’t Gobble Until You Wobble”!

The ring quilt is called Modern Wedding Ring. Not hard, but very time consuimmg as you have to lay out each block for proper placement.

    2. Candy

Judy, the quilt with the houses and streets is my own version the pattern “Village”, a free pattern by Miss Rosie’s Quilt Co., available at Fat Quarter Shop. I wanted to try a few of those cute houses, but I didn’t want to make a whole quilt with them. So I made strips that include three houses and ‘streets’ made up of fence rail strips. I don’t remember the exact strip sizes … I just made them the same height as the houses. I wish now that I had added some tree blocks, but oh, well! I like that it looks like a real village, with some houses and some streets. Thanks for commenting. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

A Happy and peaceful Thanksgiving to all. I will be alone for Thanksgiving, but I don’t mind. I have a lot to be grateful for, not the least of which is the encouraging report from my CT scan of NO metastases or surgery site cancer after my nephrectomy! More scans to come, of course, but we are off to a good start.

I always come away with more ideas from the quilt pictures. I really like the house and Lucky Stars patterns. I finished 3 donated outdoor/wildlife panels with pieces from my stash for LWR quilt tops recently. One more panel to go which is like a sampler puzzle (finishing with cast-off blocks) where you need to make the puzzle piece before you can fit it into the picture. I hope to finish that one this weekend and add these to the 8 crazy or easy pieced quilt tops already made. Then it is one more panel quilt for the nursing home where my husband lives and I’ll be done for the year.

Thanks for the pet pictures, by the way! I’m sure someone will come up with better captions, but I do believe Mortie sitting on the iPad (?) is saying, “M-om! It’s time for [choose one] bed…lunch…dinner…tummy rubs! Prayers continue. Kris in WI

The pieces using the bits of dresser scarves and doilies appear to be “Project” bags to hold any hand work project–think hexies or applique for quilts, cross stitch, or the current craze, those stick-on bead pictures.

Kris, I’m glad you gave us an update on how you’ve been doing with your recent medical issues. I’ve come to recognize so many names on here and try to connect the situations. Keep us posted and I’m sure you’re very thankful for good news as well as a sewing projects that help our minds remain on what we have been gifted to make.

Mortie is one lucky kitty. And so cute. Have enjoyed reading the blog and seeing all of the pets and quilts. And the quilted crafts are really fun-makes me want to sit in my sewing room all day and create. Harvest finally got finished up on the 18th. Just in time as we had 1 1/2″ of rain a few days after being done. Still cooking for the crew as they have been washing and shedding equipment. And our daughter made it back home to Minnesota before the storm hit that state. Sounds like many states will be affected by the winter weather on Thanksgiving. We had Thanksgiving dinner at the nursing home with Esther this evening and will have Thanksgiving dinner with our kids and grandkids tomorrow at our sons house. Happy Thanksgiving to all and praying for safe travels to those who are traveling in the states hit by the winter storms.

Great pictures. Perfect quilt for Mortie. I think I have that panel or something similar & should make 1 for
    my cat.

  22. Carol Johnson

I would love to know about the quilt for Mortie? Was it a panel or how did you make it? So cute! Happy Thanksgiving

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Carol – the fabric is old, probably from the 90’s and it’s an all over pattern, not a single panel. I wish I could tell you it’s available – sorry. The backing that I used off an old bolt said 2013!

I’d love to know more about the pieces made with dresser scarves in the picture posted on 11/26/25. I have several embroidered pieces that I’d like to use.
