A Trying Day, 7 – 2 – 26

I’ve learned a lot from all of you regarding credit cards today. I have also spent hours trying to cancel streaming services that I subscribe to. I’m not sure it can be done. You can’t talk to anyone at Apple without first paying $5.00. And now Apple has put a 2 day wait on my questions. I had to walk away because I’m so confused.

So I walked to the barn tonight when Josh and Sarah came to trim goat hooves and while they were here Josh looked at the golf cart which sputters and lurches. I’m hoping he figured out what was wrong with it because Kate and Blake and their kids are coming on Monday mostly to drive the golf cart! Haha! Haven’t seen them since last summer and I remember how much fun they had then.

It rained a lot today – I had planned to mow all day. Darn. Yes, it’s my 78th birthday tomorrow – it always gets mixed up with Fourth of July. Tomorrow night some of my girl cousins are going out to eat and then I want to be home to watch the David Muir show about the Statue of Liberty at 10 pm.

No parade on the 4th for me. I cooked eggs and potatoes tonight to make potato salad for supper on the 4th along with a pork shoulder roast – easier than grilling. My “homemade ice cream on my birthday” tradition just isn’t happening this year.

I’ve already received many cards and greetings from readers which is so very thoughtful – thank you!

    Mary,
Happy birthday! Made it just before the day ends. Hope it was a great day.
We picked black raspberries again today and I have made a pie and a crumble. The pie was excellent! Putting lots of berries in the freezer.
Because it’s been so hot, I am working on a quilt that I got the inspiration for from a readers quilt picture. As soon as I saw it, it gave me a boost to start on mine. This blog is just so wonderful!
Take care and enjoy the 4th. Fifty years ago, as a 16 year old, I was in Washington DC on a week long 4-H trip in 1976. Can’t believe it was so long ago! 🌻

Happy Birthday Mary. Hope it is a good one, I love your blog and lookforward to it every day. We are celebrating the 4th at our camp in Maine. The weather has been hot but it is so nice here with a lake breeze.

Happy Birthday Mary, I know it’s late in the evening for you, but better late than never. Hope you had a good day.
Today a friend and I went for a drive (over an hour away) to two quilt stores. One, we checked last night said they were open at 10, we arrived at 10:30 and it wasn’t open. We phoned the number on the door cause we thought maybe she had gone into her house (her shop is in her garage) she answered and said oh no, I’m closed I’m picking up another long arm machine. I had put it in our newsletter. When we said we had driven in for over an hour and checked her website last night all she said was, well there’s another store in town. We were a little taken aback. We don’t get her newsletter because we’ve never been there before. This is the second time we’ve been there and it was closed. Last time we called the number and it said she was on holidays until July 1st. Nothing on the website that time either. We went to the other shop and spent our money there. Then we went out for really delicious fish and chips so it turned out to be a good day after all.

Happy Birthday! ! ! My son’s birthday was yesterday. We used to tell him that the day he went home from the hospital, the whole country celebrated with fireworks. He is now 44, can’t believe how time has flown. My birthday is the 24th buy I’m a couple years younger than you. Hope you have a wonderful birthday and enjoy the day!

  9. Des

Happy birthday Mary. You & my dad share a birthdate. Today he would have been 98. I had to laugh when I looked at the Wear warm clothes quilts since it was 97 degrees here! Have a great lunch & when it’s your birthday calories don’t count.

  10. Candy

Happy birthday, Mary! Just think … in only 172 years we’ll be celebrating your 250th birthday too … LOL! Enjoy your special day today, and July 4th tomorrow … with an iced tea or two! Happy 4th to all your readers too!

    Happy Birthday to you Mary.
The wild fire smoke is so bad, it hurts to open my eyes!
That picture of Catlin on the boat and Hazel having a nap did bring a smile to my face.
I’m so glad we’re not 100+ degrees here. It’s dry, windy and fireworks are legal out in my neck of the woods, well prairie!

Happy Birthday. I hope your day is filled with things you enjoy. Thanks for the Blog about Nothing!

    Happy Birthday to you, Mary!!
Make it fabulous and order some ice cream for dessert!
Wishing you a blessed and joy filled day!

  14. Sue in Oregon

Good Happy Birthday morning, Mary. By now you are getting ready for your cousins lunch out. Sounds so fun. Order ice cream for dessert. And cake, too.
I am having troubles with my computer, too. All the changes they have made is making it so hard now. Apple charging for help is unbelievable but it is happening everywhere. Every company has their hand out for every little thing. Makes me want to trash this thing, except then I wouldn’t be able to read your blog.
I am making potato salad today too. We will have grilled hot dogs to go with it and blueberry pie, if I get my act together.
    Have a Great Day!

  15. Jane Dumler

Have a Very Happy Birthday —Celebrate the great woman you are.
I have a golf cart like yours that I run around in on my ranch. I bet you have some dust issues—my sons clean it out regularly for me. My Workhorse is 25 years old and been an easy piece of equipment to maintain. I so enjoy your newsletters. Thanks for all you do.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jane – yes, it’s really old but I’m really attached to it so I’ll do most anything to keep it running. Just like my old body! Hahaha!

  16. Elaine Kopischke-Trejo

I hope you have a very happy, peaceful birthday. Take the day off and enjoy your porch and your pets!

  17. Judy AZ also

Hi Mary! It’s fun to remember some of your past birthdays, on this birthday, and look at old photos of blowing out candles, etc. And you’ve still got a long way ahead to make that homemade ice cream! Happy Birthday! Thanks to everyone for the red whit & blue quilts to help celebrate the 4th!

  18. Beverly in Texas

Happy Birthday, Mary! Hope you have a great day !
I’m sure you get all kinds of “advice” from your loyal readers, and you may have heard this before, but have you tried using Manuka Honey (medical grade) on your leg wound or any wound for that matter?
It is really quite amazing! I get skin scrapes/tears on my arms frequently ( old age thing 🙁)and I just clean it up, apply the honey & cover with a bandaid or gauze & change daily & reapply. It has helped so much with faster in healing & lessening scarring. If you haven’t given it a shot, I would suggest you try some time. I keep a small tube in the medicine/First Aid kit.

Happy Birthday, Mary! Wishing you a happy and healthy 78th year. A year of fun with quilt making, a year of all your pets being healthy, cute, loving, and behaving themselves (or giving you photo opportunities when they don’t behave). And a year that’s free of computer problems!

  20. Gail in Ohio

Happy birthday!!! (Your birthday dinner sounds wonderful – enjoy it and your cousins!)
I hope things go better the rest of the weekend!!!

  21. Carolyn

Wish I could go back to 78 but 85 is fast approaching. Am extremely lucky, in good health, can go where I want to go when I want to, etc. Best wishes on your birthday, just “do what you want to do when you want to do it”, my mantra. Have an enjoyable 4th celebrating our wonderful USA. Carolyn

  22. Connie R. In N. Wis.

I’m going to join the others and wish you a happy birthday one day early. Sounds like a fun time is planned with your cousins.
Technology today is way beyond me these days. That’s why I admire you keeping the blog going even when problems arise. Computers and scams and, add AI to the mix and, I’m lost.
My washer is giving me problems. I had a local repair man look at it last week and ordered a part. He came yesterday and installed the part, did a short test run, left, and the problem is back. Probably won’t be able to come back until next week to fix it again. I may have been delusional thinking today’s appliances could be fixed instead of buying a new one. The times we live in.

  23. Jeanine from SE Iowa

Happy Birthday, Mary! So sorry it is so cold up in northern Iowa that you need a quilt to keep you warm on the porch! We never know what the weather will be like in Iowa from one day to the next. We had less than a tenth inch of rain overnight, but my husband said it is raining a little this morning. We could use a nice rain again. I watered our tomato plants this morning. I have dug a few potatoes. They taste so good after having store bought since last fall.
Our daughter had her third chemo treatment Wednesday and I asked her last night how she was feeling and all she said was. “Not to great.” I was hoping her body would accept it better, but apparently not yet. She has one more of these on July 15.
We have had Japanese beetles eating my red raspberries again this year. I picked enough before they invaded them, to make one batch of frozen red raspberry jam. I told my husband “Let’s spray them and forget about anymore berries this year”. I only have a small patch, but plenty for us. That’s about all we can do about them. We have trap and it has a lot of beetles in it every morning. They are really destructive very fast.
Happy 250th Birthday to America and to all our friends on this blog!

  24. Chris Lorenz

Special Birthday Wishes to you Mary! You always have so much on your plate, I hope this weekend you can relax and just take care of yourself!
    Cheers to you!!

  25. Joy in NW Iowa

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARY! hope your day is awesome! Hope your 78th year is healthy!
Sitting on the porch sounds wonderful. A shower went just north of us last night and then it cooled down to 68 degrees. Crazy! Amazing that you are only two hours east of me and you have so much wind and it is calm here. Weather is such a mystery.
Beryl, so sorry you are not well. Take care!
They put me on doxycycline for the skin infection from the adhesive, I have little bumps on my back that itch. I wonder….am I reacting to the antibiotic ? Grrrr. This too shall pass.
That sweet little dog lying on the clothes really made me chuckle. That would have been our dog when I was packing for a trip. He got so upset he would puke!
All the pictures are so fun.

    1. Alice in SW Ohio

That sweet little dog is my Boots. I’m having plumbing problems & his kennel normally sits where those clothes are. I had to empty a large walk in closet & I have piles everywhere! So he just made himself a little nest there!

  26. Brenda Furlong

Happy Birthday Mary! I hope it is a good one for you. Love seeing Hazel in your lap. Give her a hug from me too. She is so beautiful. Sorry for all the credit card issues. I just got my computer back from the Geek Squad due to virus issues. They didn’t find any, so I think the warnings I was getting were some kind of scam. It is hard for some of us older folks to know who and what to trust on our phones and computers. We are having a huge heat wave here in Georgia so I am off to the grocery store as soon as it opens. Hope your birthday celebrations are great fun. Thanks for being there!

  27. Fran Dixon SW Iowa

Happy Birthday Mary! You are closing in on me–hahha Its just a number!

II am home from retreat. I could have stayed another day but I was done. Some are still there. My lack of hearing is making it hard for me to participate. I had a good time and finished my UFO due on the 8th.

No parades for me! It’s too hot!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Midge – omg! Where have you been? I’ve missed you! I need an update from you.

  28. Nancy T

Happy Birthday, Mary! May the year be a great one.
I have a young great grandson with a 4th of July also. He thinks the parade and fireworks are just for him.

  29. Bonnie Farris

Hi Mary, Blessings on your birthday and all thru the coming year. I hope you have a happy, fun, peaceful day.
I have 2 credit cards , 1 for bills and insurance and other trusted sites and another for merchants and websites that I don’t know or have had experience with. That way if they are dishonest or get hacked my bill pay is not affected. I, too, have had to redo all my auto pays…what a pain in the tush!
I just got an air conditioner for my sewing room (above the garage ) and I’m loving being up there now even in this heat wave. I am really blest and thankful. There are 6 birthdays in July (besides your) and I’ll sew several presents so the air conditioner will be just the ticket. Simple pleasures!
I just got 2 Country Threads quilt books in the mail yesterday. Now to decide which quilt to start first! Ha!
Best wishes from Bonnie in SE CT
    Thanks for all you

Beryl, keep us informed. Prayers for you!

First of all Happy Birthday, hope you have a relaxing, fun day! I also wanted to give a possible suggestion for your credit card. I had Spotify premium pulling from my card and never signed up. I tried everything to cancel and couldn’t get it done. I went to the bank and explained to them and they were able to block it from coming out of my account. So maybe go into the bank and ask if they can help?

Mary, Happy 78th Birthday! Enjoy the lunch with your girl cousins. May it be a great year for you. Our Extreme Heat Warning ended last night. We’ve had some heavy rains /thunderstorms this past week. Hoping we get some cooler, and less humid weather for the holiday weekend. Janice Traverse City area

Janice – I am sitting in the porch this morning in a long warm robe and a quilt!!! Raining and very windy – hard to believe.

Happy, happy birthday Miss Mary!! Enjoy your day, you deserve it 🥰 hugs from Penny and Lucy😻❤️❤️❤️❤️

  34. Lynette in Orlando

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARY!!!!! Today is also my son’s 47th (how did that happen so quickly?) birthday!!! The small town next to ours always does their fireworks on July 3 so he always said they were doing them for him HAHAHA. I do hope you have a wonderful coming year and thank you for sharing a little slice of you and Iowa with all of us out here.

I’m planning on making some macaroni salad today and tomorrow just chill. I’m not one to go to fireworks any more plus I am dog sitting a friend’s dog and will be home to keep an eye on him and my own pup. I have neighbors that could feed a small country on the amount of fireworks they buy and set off, so I get a pretty good show from my backyard.

Credit cards are like cell phones — a blessing and a curse thanks to all the jerks out there stealing our info. I’ve learned Apple Pay scrambles our info making it more difficult to hack. It’s a challenge to embrace all this as we get older…… ugh.

    How’s the leg????

Thanks for all the fantastic photos!!! You brighten my mornings.

    again, HAPPP BIRTHDAY!!!!!!

  35. Rosalie in Texas

Mary, I’d your golf cart gas or battery powered?
I have a battery powered one and I switched to one lithium battery instead of 6 big car type batteries. It was around $500 on Amazon (less than 6 new batteries) and took grandson and neighbor about 30 minutes to install. I don’t use it every day as I also have a gator but charge lasts well over a month.
It is very fast now – I have threatened to put a governor on it when the grandkids come.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Rosalie – gas powered and made in the 60s I think so old but I love it. The seat upholstery is torn and I’m planning on recovering it this summer. I needed Josh to look at it because it wouldn’t go slow and I know the kids would have taken advantage of that – haha!!!

  36. Janet S

Mary, You’re the greatest so have a happy birthday. Imagine, the whole nation will be celebrating with you.
Beryl, I’ll be saying a prayer for you.

Happy Birthday, Mary!! Have a fun lunch with your cousins. That’s crazy you have to pay $5 to talk to Apple! Love the parking sign.

  39. Diana in Des Moines

    Prayers for you, Beryl.
Mary – happiest of birthdays! You can have homemade ice cream anytime you darn well please! We made some last week for the grands, but they would rather have had a popsicle!
Went to Sam’s Club yesterday for supplies for our family party on Sunday. Today – I’m treating myself to a pedicure. This afternoon, I am back to piecing my 4th of July wall hanging. Lots of applique and I love it!
Can’t sleep tonight. It’s been raining since 8. Heavy rain, lightning and thunder. Can’t see the rain gauge very well but looks to be about 3 inches!
My dad would have been 97 today. He passed in 1994 and he has been missed so much, but mom is with him now.
Happy birthday, our dear blog friend. Hug Hazel for Elliott!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Diana – Happy Heavenly Birthday to your dad! It’s so chilly and windy here this morning, I’m wrapped in a quilt on the porch. You’ve had more rain than we have but enough already!!! Think of that huge carnival in Clear Lake and all those campers in this awful weather. Tell Elliot I’ll hug Hazel.

I will add you to my birthday calendar for next year! I am planning on staying home and safe over the long weekend and sewing and watching all the 250th events!
Stay safe and keep all your babies safe, I don’t know about Iowa but Ca. jerks go crazy setting off fireworks when they are not permitted! Hope we don’t have any bad fires.

    Mary,
Happy Birthday. Sorry you aren’t getting homemade ice cream for your birthday. But your going to be 78 all year. Maybe next week!
Its horrible about your credit card. Been there done that, not fun. If you can’t get ahold of people, don’t worry about it. When they don’t get paid they will call you.
    Have a great Birthday!

Another great photo that should be a poster-love those fever images!
Hope you get your card issues fixed. What a hassle to deal with. I had no clue you had to jump through so many hoops to get ahold of apple. Shameful that a customer has to pay to talk to them.

    Mary,
Did not see my comment about wound healing. So here it is again just so you can be aware.
Prednisone, if you are still using it, can slow wound healing by interfering with inflammation, collagen production, and tissue repair processes.

  51. Beryl

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Mary. I hope your day is filled with many blessings! Let people do for you, I know that is difficult.
I found out today I need to visit with a neurologist and then decide if and when to have spinal tap to relieve fluid that is not draining from my brain and then to have shunt put in so it will drain on itself. I’m not looking forward to either one. Happy Birthday!
