After the Storm, 12-30-25

What a storm! So many pileups and closed roads! I was thankful to be safe in my warm house.

This morning

It took Rick many hours to clear the yard.

I’m writing this short post on my phone again because the new iPad is not working. I’ll be going back Batteries Plus tomorrow.

Mortie is at the vet office tonight till Weds – she’s being spayed – think of how confused she must be feeling.

I hope this whole tech event will be solved by the weekend.

I can’t transfer photos until I’m back on my IPad. This is all so disgusting.

So sorry you are having issues with the iPad! Ugh!
We had some of the storm on Sunday/Monday morning too. Nothing like you tho. We didn’t go anywhere until evening as when it was snowing it was white out conditions. During the early morning hours it snowed again and they advised no travel! Today it’s 30 something.
Kids are coming for supper tonight better get back at it!

Judy, I can’t imagine having no power for a full day when it’s so cold. Glad it came back on. Mary, that storm looks very cold, glad you could stay inside and keep warm. We have very sunny skies which is nice for us because the usual here in winter is gray skies and rain. It’s cold for us, overnight it was -3 Celsius which is around 26 Fahrenheit. Not as cold as most of you but chilly for us. It’s always humid here so we feel the cold more than a drier climate would feel it. We have hummingbirds that stay all winter so I have a heated feeder so their food doesn’t freeze overnight. I have two hummingbirds that take turns at the feeder. They are fun to watch.
Some sad news, our son’s standard poodle that was 12-1/2 passed away, in their arms on Saturday. When he was about 4 months old he was out for a hike with our son and jumped over a log, the other side of the log was a 15ft drop. He survived the fall, my son rushed down to get him and when he brought him back up to the trail he took a few steps and collapsed. Our son had a wonderful vet and it ended up he was about 1/2” away from having half his body paralyzed. After three weeks he recovered so he could walk again but off and on had pain in his back. He did pretty good all these years and Saturday afternoon wouldn’t eat or drink. They don’t have an emergency vet in their town it is 3-1/2hrs away. Before they could leave he passed in their arms. They were glad they weren’t driving in the car. Our granddaughter who is just about three sort of understands he isn’t coming back, but keeps asking why mommy and daddy are sad and need to wipe tears away. It’s always tough to lose a fur baby regardless of their age.
Stay warm everyone. Mary I hope your iPad issues get resolved. It was a good idea someone suggested for you to do a test post while at the store to be sure it works.

So sorry to hear of your son’s poodle passing, Teresa. Such a hard thing to go through, especially at Christmas. It sounds like he had a wonderful life with your son and his family. Blessings for the new year, Jan in MA

Glad to hear from you! Thanks to the iPhone. Here in NC, the weather has been warm, in the 70s, but we suddenly got your cold weather overnight and it will be between 30 and 40 today. I’m glad I got out for errands yesterday.

Maybe you can try posting a short test to the blog from the new iPad while you’re at Batteries Plus. If it works there, that would cut down the possible causes. It’s odd that the iPhone worked but the iPad didn’t.

Mary — I’m so sorry for your frustration!!!! Is there maybe a youngster at church who could help you? They are so intuitive with this stuff. Totally frustrates me as well.

Your snow looks beautiful. We’ve gotten cold here in Florida as well. I’m bundling up my tomato plants — have a few tomatoes that are almost ripe….. I do hate this cold when it comes this far south. The wind has been brutal here as well.

Take care Mary – praying this all works out.

  5. Alice in SW Ohio

Your pictures look cold but so pretty. Sunday we had really warm temps here in SW Ohio (60+) Monday temps were in the 20’s with close to 50 mph winds! It was a good day to stay home & read! Boots didn’t stay out long, but he loves the snow! We only have a skim of snow & most of that blew away with the high winds we had. It’s much calmer today.
Having heated floors would be wonderful! I would love to have vinyl wood look floors, but the floors are chilly here & my heat & AC comes from vents in the ceiling. So carpet it is! My Christmas was really nice with my son & family here. Got to meet my grandson’s GF, who I though was a rather strange eater. All she ate was deviled eggs & carrots! Boots certainly enjoyed the company & all the attention he got, he was worn out afterwards! I also learned quickly that all candy must be kept up high! This pup must be part monkey & can climb to get to something he wants! Happy New Year to everyone!!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Alice – deviled eggs and carrots? Why? Is she vegetarian ? What did your grandson say about it? She would be a hard guest to have! Boots is a handful, isn’t he?

We just went through what I call the “worst Vermont has to offer.” That would be 35 degrees and 24 hours of rain on our beautiful snow. High winds here too. Now this morning it’s 10 degrees with about an inch of new snow which I’m so glad for because it covers up the ugly ice from our storm. Tomorrow we fly to Florida for the rest of the winter, and I have to say, I’m not sorry. We have propane baseboard heat here in VT and radiant floors, but it still isn’t what I’d call warm. We run our propane fireplace a lot which makes such a difference. Hope everyone stays warm and dry. Thanks for working so hard to get the blog up and running again.

I think your snow covered everything is beautiful. We went from a record breaking 82 on Sunday down to 33 that night, 20s last night and very cold, strong winds. Staying home from sewing today, need to get more chores done around here. Some kind of bug going around here too, almost flu like symptoms.
I hope Miss Mortie isn’t too upset till she gets back home. We were told to keep Penny and Lucy confined in a carrier that night, right after surgery. They weren’t having it and happily played with each other. 😻

I forgot to mention my condolences on the IPad mess. Our daughter, Sarah, was over yesterday to cut my hair and visit. We had trouble getting our new Epson tank printer to connect to the internet. Even she couldn’t get it to connect and she is IT director for the university and solves all problems. We went by a second hand shop and she found a couple of I think she called them Ethernet cords with a plastic clip on the end like an old phone jack connection. Luckily, our printer is next to the modem/router so she connected them and now it’s connected to the internet forever! Yay! Only $1 for a donated used one and Walmart sells them for $6. She has to help us with phone problems too, so lucky she has the knowledge and patience! I feel your frustration Mary! I do enjoy the tank printer for all the ink it holds without drying up quickly like our old one.

Pamela – I’m thinking about Mortie this morning and anxious for her to get home. When she gets home she’ll be free not in a carrier

  8. MAUREEN M

Take a deep breath Mary, you are warm and all is good, I am sure Mortie is being well taken care of. Have a blessed day.

  9. Jean

So glad to hear from you! Good grief. And that storm looks as if it was frightful. Yes, thanking God for vac warm haven from the elements. Believing for a fixed iPad…soon. Is this the new iPad? I’m scared to go buy one. I would have no one to turn to for help.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jean – Richard is two hours away with a full time job and I don’t want to bother anyone but I’m getting desperate. I’m only able to use my phone

  10. Barbara (in MO)

So sorry for all the tech problems you’ve been dealing with, but thankful to have a post from you today. We had much the same weather as Sara in Indiana; Sunday went from 70 in the am to 14 on Monday morning with 50+ mph winds. But no snow, so we got off lucky. Your snow is pretty but I don’t like to be out in it.
I started my New Year’s quilt on the day after Christmas, cutting many little 1 1/4″ strips to make your pastel log cabin quilt. I’m doing all 50 blocks at once and trimming, rather than cutting the logs to size. Yesterday I got all of them through row 5. Its so pretty and dainty looking. I love it so far!

  11. Dorothy

I am so happy I moved from the Midwest to the PNW 65+ years ago. Although I wasn’t happy at the time,
At the age of 83 now, I definitely could not handle all that cold, snow, ice

  12. Sharon G.

Mary’s winter wonderland! Beautiful photos! Snow is pretty until it’s not. We’ve had one day of snow. It didn’t stick around very long.
I haven’t commented lately. Just been busy. I had wallpaper removed and walls painted before Thanksgiving. Then I helped a friend move. It’s a long story. I bought her condo, but now I have to move (again)!
My sister is now close by in a nursing home. I don’t think she’ll ever be the same but she’s still with us and that’s a lot to be thankful for. I haven’t seen her since Christmas Eve.
I came down with what I call the crud on the 26th of December. Four family members got the same thing after spending Christmas together. So, i can’t go visit my sister until I’m over my sinus and chest congestion. Ugh!
Tomorrow is my 77th birthday. I guess I’ll stay home with my two cats and try to get well.
    Take care everyone.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sharon – Happy Birthday! I’m 6 months older than you. No! Why do you have to move again??? I am so sorry! I hope 2026 is better for you …and your poor sister. I pray I never have to leave my home – it’s my biggest fear

  13. Carol in Texas

Mary, how do you heat your house? It must be cozy for those plants to look so happy against those icy windows! The photos are beautiful, but oh, it must be cold!!!!! My hat’s off to you, living in that wintry world. I’m pretty spoiled here in central Texas. It’ll be 30 or lower tonight…..this is cold for us!!!!! Stay warm!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Carol – the floors are concrete with heat in them as well as a regular furnace with registers under several of the windows. It was all constructed for the plants – my dream was to have a greenhouse and this is almost a greenhouse but inside the house. I’d like to install French doors just behind the tv so the plant room becomes separate. I go barefoot most of the winter because the floors are warm and the pets love it, too!

  14. Jo in Wyoming

O-burr. It’s beautiful, but it does look cold.
When we adopted Loretta, I took her to be spayed. The vet told me she should have had a tattoo because she was already spayed. So, the little thing went through that for no reason. Dixie, the golden before Loretta, had a blue line on her tummy…the tattoo.

I must share a fun story.
Today at dancing lessons, this lady who is very good, told me she gained a pound over Christmas. She will go to more classes this week to get rid of it. I ask her what the middle digit of her weight is. I’m not asking how much you weight…just the middle digit.
Well, she doesn’t have a middle digit. She weighs less than 100 pounds!!! I ask her if she was in the 80’s. Yes, she said she’s 82 years old!! I swear this is a true story, the whole thing. So, she 82 years old, weighs less than 100, and is a very good dancer.
I hope you all got a chuckle out of that.

  15. Sue in Oregon

Wow! What a storm. It looks so very cold. Brrrr Makes me shiver to look at the photos. I know you must feel so defeated with your Ipad problems. They are so wonderful when they work and so depressing when they don’t. Thank you, though, for sending us messages and photos from your phone.

  16. Jeanie S, Central IL

Wow, your winters are doozies! We had lots of wind and light flurries all day, but there is no snow on the ground. Temp is 16 now.
I hope Morti recovers well; she will be so excited to see you.
    Take Care/Stay Well Everyone, 🥰

  17. Christine in AZ

I’m happy to hear from you – the snow looks beautiful but … cold.
Tech – ugh. I have an old laptop (that used to be my work laptop) that needs to be updated but I just don’t want to learn a new operating system. I suppose I’ll have to next year. Ok whining over. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and get your iPad issues figured out soon. Happy New Year everyone!
Ps. I have my new year’s quilt project picked out. Very excited to start!

  18. Diane, Sqyeak, Buddy in Central Ihio

No worries, Mary. We’re just happy you all are safe and warm. Mortie will be so excited to see you when she gets home😻😻. Very cold and windy here, too.

  19. Sara in Indiana

Very little snow here, even though it lightly snowed all day. It went from 67* on Sunday evening to 17* Monday morning with wind chill -1* —very thankful for modern heat! Hope your new iPad is up and running soon, and that Mortie recovers nicely.

  20. Kathy

I know what you are going through. I got a new IPad for Christmas and ended up calling Apple support to get my Ipad set up. They were very helpful and finally it got working. I could understand the person very well and she was very patient with me.

  21. Kathy in western NY

Good to hear you are all well there. It’s been a storm to remember here too. Buffalo airport clocked a wind gust at 79 mph. We were more in the 50-60 mph range here.
I also was glad to be home thankfully with power so family could work from here and I could feed them too. Stay safe Mary and I sure would be missing Mortie too.

    1. Mary Ellen

But look how clean your windows look!😉😳🤣 This too shall pass with your iPhone issues.!🤞🥰Happy New Year!🎉

  22. JUDY BRUNDAGE

BE safe! We had no power from 12 noon the 26th until 12 noon the 27th. Very cold!!! In Michigan
