An Unforgettable Win! 9-7-24

I am an Iowa Hawkeye fan through and through except for one game – when Iowa plays Iowa State. Rick and I both went to Iowa State so how could I cheer against them? Today’s game was unbelievable and for those of you who don’t care for sports, just skip over this paragraph. With 6 seconds to go Iowa State kicked a 53 yard field goal to win 20-19. Iowa State fans celebrated like no tomorrow and Iowa fans stood in shock. We were all in shock – what a bizarre ending! And so the rivalry is over until next September.

The weather was not porch weather this morning – sad. Next week it’s supposed to get warm again but somehow it’s not the same. Tomorrow is Rally Day at church when the kids find their Sunday School rooms and meet their teachers.

19 eggs today!!!

I’d love to make this for a teacher.

Card from our friend Donna S. – just an interesting note from Donna about her daughter who “works for Helen Keller International in the neglected tropical diseases division and works remotely when she is traveling for races. She has worked in over 50 countries first for Mercy Corps and now for Helen Keller.” Donna’s daughter, Amy, is an Ultrarunner and when Donna sent this card a couple weeks ago Amy was in Italy to do a 270 mile “race” in the Alps. It is mostly a hike with lots of climbs and descents according to Donna.

Donna – this sounds literally impossible to me. How did she do? Is she home by now? I need an update.

Just saw a breaking news bulletin that Angel Reese is out for the rest of the season for an injury. What???

That’s it – goodnight all!

That quilt is so cute, a teacher would love it.
19 eggs, that’s great, love all the different colors.

Glad to see comments back. Been busy canning applesauce, pears, and yesterday tomato juice. I agree, not a good year for tomatoes. Luckily last year I canned several quarts. We like warmed tomatoes with basil sprinkled into it for a vegetable. It was a beautiful day yesterday for all the football games. I had laundry on the line. Soon hanging out laundry will be done for the year as it gets cooler. I hope to get some yard work done this week.

Mary maybe you should just wear a sign “I feel fine, thank you for your concern”.😂.
My husband being a UI alumni is a big Hawkeyes fan and was so disappointed in the game yesterday. I usually watch with him but my daughter and I went out for lunch and some shopping.
Your eggs are beautiful and Hazel is protecting them for you. My husband is paying $7.99 a dozen for farm eggs! Fortunately I’m not crazy about eggs and rarely eat them at that price..
Loved the card about the husband not able to find things in the kitchen, so true about the male species. I think it could be because the don’t put things in the same place every time. They see an open spot and put what ever is in hand there.
We are still in the 100’s but later this week we drop to the 90’s so perhaps the worm will turn. 40’s sound so cold like many of your are experiencing already.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Connie – gosh, I wish I could give you fresh eggs! Literally from the nest – the best eggs! You might even become an egg lover! The state rivalry game is only fun for the state of Iowa people really – and like the Iowa players said – it isn’t a conference game so not important. At least that’s what they’re trying to tell themselves. 😏

    Hi Mary,
Comments is working! Love the picture of Hazel with the big basket of eggs, yum.
I am a San Diego Padres fan. It’s been such a fun season. Hoping to be in the playoffs. I am a San Diego native for 73 years. We’re having a heat wave right now. I’m ready for fall.
My husband is a graduate of University of Southern California USC and a grad of UCLA. But, USC is big in our house. We love to watch their football games.

  5. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

Yes, I too have comments again. I’m away from home for one more day then home to get ready to go away again next weekend to Monroe, WA. My husband and son are going in a Spartan Race. It is the first for my husband and not sure how many my son has done. It will be interesting to watch, that is for sure. The eggs are wonderful. Luckily I am able to get farm eggs about five mi it’s from my house. I couldn’t buy store eggs. Have a great week everyone.

  6. Fran Dixon

    It’s working for me again!

The heat will return but we know summer is over.

I had to cancel a 10 day trip out to the national parks next month. So I am settled back in with retreats here and there. August I was gone every week with retreats. I need to deep clean the sewing room but I am sewing anyway. Baby quilts and burp pads are on my agenda. Lots of quilts need quilting. Photos here keep me motivated. Keep them coming!

Hi Mary. Catching up. Cannot reply to Hi Richard, but can to this one. Happy Birthday to me yesterday🎂. Not sure what is going on, but Hi Richard didn’t work🙀. I have a good article on Caitlyn in the Columbus Dispatch if you’d like it. 44* here today 9/8/24

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Diane – I knew you and mom shared a birthday so belated! I’d love the article. With everything on my mind I missed several birthdays in early September!!!

    2. Beryl BC

Happy Birthday. Diane. Mine was yesterday, too, and we’re both in Ohio. I was able to be at Great Wisconsin Quilt Show with cousins.

  8. Sheryl Harrison

It looks like I’m going to be able to comment. The eggs are so beautiful! I haven’t bought eggs from a store for years. I buy from a friend who has free range chickens and they lay beautiful eggs. One year my sister-in-law was visiting and put the eggs in a basket to photograph. I used that photo in our family calendar.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sheryl – I, too, take pictures of my eggs in assorted containers – they truly are beautiful! Store eggs are so old when you get them.

  9. NancyTD

The placemats for meals on wheels is a great idea.
I’m missing the dirty dozen. It forced me to get things done.
Weather is crazy. A chilly spell and then a big warm up. Better than SNOW!!
I have made 18 jars of raspberry jelly( no seeds) and froze many packages. Made every raspberry recipe I can find—it is time to stop picking and let the birds have them. It was a very good year for berries and not so good for tomatoes How was everyone’s garden?
Wow! The eggs. Do you make egg dishes and scratch angel food cake?

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Brenda – seriously? I will tell Richard. If that’s the case WordPress is the one who causes all the problems. One day last week after writing a very long post with lots of pictures, it all disappeared and I was almost in tears. The whole page froze. I shut off my IPad, turned it back on and found my post saved in Drafts! How are you guys??? Send me an email and tell me what’s new with you. You know what’s new with me!

  10. Linda in Saginaw Michigan

Hazel looks too cute guarding the eggs. My little Oliver use to sneak in the hen house when my back was turned, grab himself an egg and eat it shell and all. Then he would give me his sweet smile- I swear he did- and wag that fat little lab tail and I could never be mad.

I didn’t see any sports on TV . I tried stitching on the front porch while the puppies played but even with socks, long sleeve tee and a sweatshirt it was just to chilly. It’s 40 this morning brrr. I did try to watch an old movie sister Nancy wanted me to watch but it took around 4 hours to watch it in between trying to get Don out of bed and to the bathroom (I put a riser under the toilet seat and boy is it nice, gets him up almost 4 inches so transfering him to a wheelchair is so much easier). He had extreme pins and needle pains in his feet and ended up on the floor again and that took us an hour and a half to get him up and out to his lift chair. I stayed up all night last night with a headache and just couldn’t get comfortable so it may be a long day today.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Linda – oh, Linda my friend! You cannot do this – how about a care facility? Did the U of M have any ideas? You can’t get in sooner? Have you tried Mayo? Oh, how I hope Rick doesn’t have any breakdowns while I’m the one needing care. I’m not sure what we’d do. I, actually sitting in the porch this morning – it’s much warmer and on its way to you. I’m going to mow this afternoon since I don’t watch NFL. Fever plays at 3 so I gotta mow fast!

No comment box on the e-mail, but when I click on read on blog I can read comments. So that works for me. I was at the Iowa/Iowa State game yesterday. I have had season tickets since 1976. I have seen the team in its ups and downs. We have certainly had a few tough years recently.

Beautiful weather recently. 46 degrees right now, but will warm to 75. Can’t beat that. I need to figure out a small hand stitching project to work on when I am sitting in a hospital waiting area. So, that is my task today.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Vicki – why will you be in the hospital waiting area? The game was a stunner but what a gorgeous fall day to sit in the stands no matter who won.

      1. Vicki Ibarra

My husband is having wrist surgery on 9/23 and I will have a skin surgery for skin cancer on 9/27. In the skin surgery, they shave off a layer, check to see if they got all the cancer cells. If not, they shave another layer off, and so on, until the margins are clear. I was told to plan on spending the entire afternoon in the procedure area. This is not a scary cancer, so I am not worried. But an entire afternoon is a long time. Thus, the need for a project to work on.

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Vicki – I have a friend here in Garner experiencing the same thing – skin cancer and they keep going a little deeper. My mom had this as well.

  12. Carolyn Rector of Ohio

Great game for Iowa State fans. Exciting football.
Hazel looks so cute riding in the golf cart.
Much cooler here in Ohio as well. And the rain keeps missing us.. So dry. Good football weather though. I’m glad the comments are working again. I love to read everyone’s news. Have a great day, everyone!

  13. Connie R. In Wis.

The last few days of blog comments just show how each of us has different talents to contribute. Some write beautiful cards, the man who bakes bread to give away, Patti in Florida who makes quilts to donate, Jo in Wyoming who goes to the jail to teach sewing , Vicki’s placemats and,Mary’s fresh eggs for friends. It reminds me of my favorite quote by Erma Bombeck:
“When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left but could say I’ve used everything you gave me.”
    Thanks for all the inspiration.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Connie R – I have never heard that Erma Bombeck quote but wow, I love it!! I’m taking dozens of eggs to church today and hope I can find takers. I never dreamed I’d have this many eggs each day. Yes, I do love these comments that tell us all about other people and what they do, their lives, their projects, their families. I love the comments!

      1. Connie R.

Patti, looks like you do your share of spreading your talent. I’m always amazed at your beautiful quilts and how much you get accomplished.

  14. Charlotte in No. California

I’m glad the comments are back. I wanted to tell Vicki that her idea for placemats for Meals on Wheels is a great idea. And I like the pillowcases for hospice and nursing homes too. I get lots of ideas from this blog.
I watched too much football today or parts of games. I was glad Texas beat Michigan. My husband was a big Ohio State fan so he never wanted Michigan to win. I saw half of the Iowa/Iowa State game but switched to another game at half. I was so surprised that Iowa State won. I should have stuck with it. That must have been an exciting game. My son-in-law was not happy. Iowa is his favorite team. The news tonight showed Brock Purdy (the 49ers QB) cheering like crazy when Iowa State won. His wife recorded him. It was cute!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Charlotte – I have to find that Brock Purdy clip! It was an unbelievable ending. I,too, left the game at halftime because it was so boring. Good heavens – I was back inside to see the ending however.

  15. Barbara (in MO)

Went to the library and picked up a Sally Hepworth book and also Elin Hilderbrand and there were several of each author. So hopefully I’ll like these and have something new to read. Its 46 degrees here this morning!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Barbara – I think I’ve liked The Younger Wife the best so far. I did not like The Things We Keep.

  16. BRENDA

i was happily surprised to find all is well on this part of your blog/ I first saw a test entry , went to the blog spot at the top of the page clcked on it and it went to a message that it was embarrassing that they were unable to take me to where i was trying to go. ??? what a relief to go further down and find this lovely blog working just fine.
then I had a comment re the things that hospice, nursing homes might like. When my MIL was in hospice they were picky about pillowcases but very happy to have the beloved Hawaiian mumus MIL loved transformed by me to have the back split open with ties snaps or velcro. They seemed to cheer up other inpatients seeing the cheerful “gowns”. They even kept the gowns after MIL went to be with the Lord. I guess a bit of cheerfulness never hurts if there is some permission via the place they are staying and it accommodates the ease of care

I’m in Wisconsin visiting a good friend. We try to go to the PBS sponsored quilt show in Madison, WI every year. I believe the show was a brain child of Nancy Zieman, and I was thrilled to meet her some years ago there. It is a wonderful, fantastic, big quilt show. So inspiring! This year there many, many vendors as well; so glad to see after the issues of the past few years. Have you ever been, Mary?

    1. Sue in Marion, IN

I was there too! Drove up from Indiana! Our son is a medical resident at U of Wisconsin hospital so we visit a few times a year. I spent Thursday at the quilt show—it’s a nice big show with lots of special exhibits, vendors, classes, and lectures. I took a class Friday morning—Make a Face with Laurie Landree. So much fun! Yesterday was nuts in Madison! Last day of the quilt show, home football game, and yesterday and today, the Wisconsin Ironman triathlon. People everywhere! We managed to get downtown to the farmers’ market—biggest and best farmers’ market I’ve ever seen! We always go when we’re here. Unfortunately our son had to make a quick trip to Indianapolis this weekend as his girlfriend is hospitalized with appendicitis. We got to spend some time with him Thursday and Friday, so at least we got to see him. Heading for home this morning!

      1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sue – now that’s a full weekend! I hope the girlfriend is ok and recuperating. She’s got her own personal Md, doesn’t she?

        1. Sue in Marion, IN

Jessica had been complaining of lower abdominal pain for a couple of days and Evan kept telling her to go to the ER to get it checked. She thought she was making too much of the pain and didn’t want to go. She is finishing up a PhD in virology at IU Indy and lives a couple blocks from University Hospital, Methodist (owned by IU) and Eskenazi. She could have walked! He drove down and took her Saturday morning and her appendix had “perforated “—I learned that’s the official name for a burst appendix even though it sounds less severe. She is hospitalized for IV antibiotics and will take oral antibiotics for 8 weeks to let the area heal, then they’ll remove it. I questioned why they didn’t just remove it now. It’s because even though it burst, she doesn’t have an abdominal infection and trying to remove it could cause one. Who knew? Anyhow, she’s ok and Evan got a day off today—hoping they’ll release her this afternoon.

          1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sue – this is very similar to the reason they won’t remove my tumor right now. Still some blood pooling there and they don’t want to start an abdominal infection.

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Meredith – I have not ever been to that show but the schedule always conflicted with our huge Open House and now I’m over it. If you’ve seen one machine quilting masterpiece, you’ve seen them all. They don’t inspire me. Yes, it started as Nancy Z’s show – now there’s a talented lady gone too soon.

  19. Tina W in Oregon

Comments working fine here. We’re experiencing hot weather and fairly windy. The wind helps cool things off at night. The beginning of the Pendleton Round Up week started this morning with a “dress up” parade and there’s a concert tonight we can hear from our house. There’s Extreme bull riding Monday and Tuesday nights and the rodeo starts Wednesday thru Saturday. There’s another parade Friday where there are no motorized vehicles. Main Street will be closed for concerts and lots of vendors. It’s extremely difficult to get anywhere in town but it’s a fun time (mostly).

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Tina – too bad it’s so hot there – sounds like a great week of fun although I’m such a woos about feeling bad for the animals at the rodeo. I’ll bet those little calves almost have a heart attack running into the arena, roped, and thrown to the ground. Sounds cruel when you think of it that way. Don’t mind me – I’m just not a rodeo fan.

      1. Tina W

I know what you mean about some of the events. I usually only go to the rodeo once every three or four years but I enjoy walking around to see the vendors and Indian village and getting some Indian fry bread with huckleberry jam. Yum!

  20. Jo in Wyoming

    Comments are back…yeah.
Those eggs are beautiful. My fresh egg lady has had raccoons and fox visitors! She’s so sad to lose her “girls”

Seeing those place mats for meals on wheels gave me a great idea. They are so colorful and cheerful. When my friend was in hospice, I made her some pillow cases because those stark white ones drained all the color in her face. I’m going to check with hospice if they will take some pillow cases. Perhaps the nursing home will be happy to add colorful pillow cases. I could use up some of my stash and the residents could look a little better. They’re fast and easy. I’ll check into it and report soon.

This blog is so full ofideas and inspiration, you never know what sparks a thought.
Thanks for sharing those place mats.

pillowcases is a great idea for any of the nursing homes or hospice areas. not only does it make things look better, but the recipient feels loved. go for it. rah rah rah!!!!! patti in florida

Jo – and I bought fabric for pillowcases for the kids as Christmas gifts. Now it looks like I’ll miss Christmas all together.

  21. Sherry Whalen

We walked to Mantorville (2 miles one way) today to go to Marigold Days – looked at the stuff at the flea market, ate, and walked home. We turned on the TV and it was 3rd quarter, it was pretty exciting!! What dorm did you live in at ISU? I was in Vollmer.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sherry – oh, heavens, I’ll have to think about that. One of the very oldest ones in the U shaped drive – across from The Towers which were new when I was there. I love Marigold Days – next year remind me.

      1. Sherry Whalen

Mary – I was wrong about the name – Vollmer was our floor – the building was Freeman. The one I lived in was the one on the end – looking into the ‘U’ on the right hand side, a little past the U. There were several older buildings (google is my friend here lol) – Barton, Roberts, Welch, Oak, Elm(where we ate) Opposite of the U was Maple, Willow, and Larch. I was in temp housing when I got there – I lived in the basement of Helzer – the boys dorm – for about a month. I had high school friends who lived in Willows. I haven’t been to the campus for years, the last time we drove past on I35 we said we should go in and drive around sometime. It is such a pretty campus.

        1. Beryl BC

Was Freeman the one next to Barton? Barton isthe one I lived in. I haven’t been back on the campus in many years.

Working here also. Some great football today! Looking forward to the Lions game Sunday night. Love the eggs!

  23. Sandy

Hi Mary, comments are back on after x couple of misses! Lovely sunny day, kids out riding bikes , l have had a sit in the sun this morning, and now quilting with a cup of tea and a couple of chocolate biscuits. The dog is having a snooze in and of the sunspots on the bedroom carpet. Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

  24. Pamela Dempsey in Northeast Texas 😻

Miss Hazel looks so cute! We made it back home safely but Penny and Lucy sure seemed to have missed us. We picked pears 🍐 this morning and still have more to get.

  25. Donna Sproston

Update on Amy: She dropped at about 80km and was lead woman at that point. She was having ankle issues and knew with 370 km to go it was not going to get better on the rugged terrain.. She says she is retiring from racing but time will tell. She is 50! She started running in junior high and it has been a very important part of her life. She has won some big ones. We watched Northern Illinois beat Notre Dame and the final quarter of the Iowa game. My husband grew up in Iowa and did his graduate work at Iowa and my father graduated from Iowa State so I was pulling for both!. Hazel appears to be guarding the eggs!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Donna – oh, I’m sad for Amy!! After the travel and all she didn’t get to finish the race. Do you really think she’ll retire? Will she still travel? She’s quite the gal and so interesting to me.

  26. Pat Smith

Yes! Comments are working again! I went to the University of Iowa and if I still followed their sports, I’d be sad tonight. I met my now husband at the age of 20 and left Iowa City to go to his school, Northern Illinois University. Tonight I got to see Northern beat Notre Dame in just the same close game. Notre Dame is also in shock!

    1. Gloria from CC

Pat Smith – I also went to the University of Iowa so I’m a Hawkeye fan through and through.
What interests me most is that you left Iowa to go to Northern University of Illinois in DeKalb. My Aunt and Uncle were both affiliated with that school – my Aunt was the head of the School of Nursing and my Uncle was the head of the history department. We’ve spent many days in DeKalb over the years.

      1. Mary Etherington Post author

Gloria – and this is the only game that I don’t cheer for Iowa. It was a heartbreaker for those guys who played hard. I remember you traveled to DeKalb. Hugs to C

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Pat Smith – we saw those replays – shock hardly covers it! I can’t imagine the celebrating that likely went on all night in Ames, can you?

  27. Shirley Andersen Smith

Here I am finally back and leaving a comment. Hope it goes through.
Wowzer, what a game Mary. Another year of rivalry in the books. I like that pencil quilt too…for a teacher.
How are you? I hope all is going well and the magic will work for you.
    Shirley from Oregon

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Shirley – I feel 100%! I went to a bridal shower yesterday and was literally accosted by women wanting to know how I was. I was embarrassed. And church this morning will be the same. I’m going to sneak out the back door fast if I can!
