Another Chair, 8-17-24

Love these old chairs. This is Teresa’s chair – she pieced the upholstery fabric! Purchased for $25, the old gold crushed velvet was replaced with patchwork.

Jeannie’s chair recovered
Mary Ellen’s wingback recovered
My old and very comfortable chair that I bought at the thrift store for $7

Signs of the season:

Isn’t it a shame I don’t harvest these elderberries? I have soooo many!

BLT’s for supper

Do you remember Martha’s mom Elaine Anderson? We helped celebrate her 100th birthday in June. Sadly Elaine is now in a nursing home after a fall and is so hoping to go home again. Here’s her address if you should feel like sending her a card:

From the Iowa State Fair! Congrats, Diana!
It’s almost football season, isn’t it?

What great ideas for the chairs! I’ll have to keep an eye out for those now. Congratulations on your ribbons, Diana! Keeper looks like he’s having a “ball”! Haha! I envy those elderberries! I’ve always wanted to grow them but never did. Yours are beautiful! And I understand there are lots of health benefits. Very cool here today, feels like fall but it’s overcast and not very nice out at all. We had our driveway repaved and it came out great! Hoping to put the house on the market in the Spring. At least that’s the plan for now. I’ve been going through the kitchen, cleaning out outdated food and spices. Cleaning the cupboards. The fridge. We did the dining room first. Next will be the bedrooms. The basement and garage are going to be very time consuming and a lot of work. A dumpster will be needed! I’m kinda liking throwing things out! Jan in MA

Jan – sounds like you’re doing death cleaning – like the book. Yes, these are such comfy chairs but no longer pretty – they all need recovering. You’re having the weather we had last week – too cool to sit in the porch. Guess I could put the elderberries on MarketPlace just in case someone wanted them. I know they’re considered very healthy with many benefits.

Diana, I agree with the others. You should have received blue ribbons. Beautiful quilted pieces and workmanship.
I will get cards out tomorrow. I hope Elaine’s recovery goes well. Keeper loves his football. So cute! We are getting lots of tomatoes too. BLT’s are hard to beat. I have tomato on toast every morning for breakfast. Tomato cobbler tonight.
Roasted tomato sauce in the oven now. I’ll miss fresh tomatoes in a week or 2.

  3. Sharon F

Oh, those tomatoes look luscious! I miss good ripe homegrown tomatoes so much; growing season is too short here.

Dianna did well with her quilts at the fair. Congratulations! Our fair is going on now too. We’ll go next week. I entered a quilt, first time ever for me. I hope it doesn’t get judged too harshly.

Love all the chairs, such creative ideas.

Beautiful work, Diana! Oh, elderberries. I agree with Marcia, someone might be really interested in picking them to make all sorts of goodies. Throw some spinach leaves in your sandwich for a BST! Great looking old chairs. Impressive work Teresa in the patchwork for your wingback reupholster. You’ve given me an idea for an old wooden rocker.

My mom made elderberry jelly. Blooming elderberries are beautiful m. When I was very young, the neighbors and I would dress up in old lace curtains, make elderberry bouquets, and have wedding processionals down the driveway.
The wing chairs are all lovely; it is a great, classic style. Good job on the patchwork upholstery, Theresa.

Saw another sign of the season while driving yesterday: goldenrod and ragweed blooming along the side of the road. Ugh! Soon the fall allergies and asthma will flare up and my outside days will be over for a while.

Your football player looks so happy. Do you suppose he is celebrating a win?? HaHa
The chairs are wonderful. I have a fairly new chair from the furniture store and it is Not very comfortable.
I love your quilts, Diana. In my opinion, they should have had blue ribbons. I guess it is hard to find judges for quilts nowadays, at least it is here. Often they don’t know enough about them. Anyway, love your appliqued table runner.
How I wish we could grow blue and/or black elderberries. We can only grow the red ones that are not good for syrup. It must be our very light sandy soil. I have elderberry envy.
    Have a great day everyone….

I agree with you, Sue! I thought they were flawless! Deserving a better ranking, in my opinion, beautiful! ( I thought if these got that ribbon choice, what could possibly be better?)

I love the chairs. They all look so comfortable. I love to collect wooden chairs and, had quite a few before I realized I had no space for them. Now, I still collect but, kids’ and doll size instead.

Thanks for posting Elaine’s address. Hope she gets lots of cards.

Love all the chairs and it’s nice to just re-do our favorites. Our daughter bought a rocker with foot stool from my mom’s auction and had it recovered to match her home. It was really affordable compared to a new piece of furniture. They even put in lumbar cushions which makes it so nice to sit in. I’m glad she wanted it enough to buy it from the estate. I have 3 lbs. of bacon thawed that I need to bake today so we can enjoy some BLT sandwiches next week. Have a great weekend everyone. I do miss the olympics.

So sorry to hear about Elaine. Hope she will enjoy the cards.
Teresa’s chair is so unique and beautiful.
Oh try to make elderberry syrup, Mary. You are adventuresome.
I love the quilts in the fair. Especially the addition of buttons on grandmother’s garden blocks.
I’m ready for football season, too.
    Enjoy the Fever game today.

My neighbors mom would use those elderberries to cook down for a syrup. People take it daily especially in the winter, She has a honey business and sells it there. I bet someone in your area would pick and put to good use.

  12. Erin

The chairs are marvelous! My husband and I have a hard time passing up old chairs at sales, even when they go for free, but we have nowhere to put them.

I’m so jealous of your elderberries! We had no luck growing them when we were on the farm because of the horrible clay soil.

Lori – it’s an old can opener which I don’t use but I was looking for my tomato knife and just forgot to throw it back in the drawer.

Diana, your quilts are beautiful. Keeper is celebrating after he just scored a touchdown!! I’m glad it’s football season soon. Love the chairs too.
BLTs sound good. I don’t have any lettuce. Guess it will be BTs!

yep, keeper knows football season has started. he’s got chewing the ball covered. ha!
love the quilts that were in the fair. very very nice. since covid i haven’t heard much about fairs around here but i assume they still have them. congrats on earning ribbons.
made it upstairs today and pulled backs for 7 quilts. three are ready to be donated, one needs binding. three i want to try to finish myself. will need to rest now before that.

I love old chairs. I have one in storage right now but we are hoping to move and when we do I hope we have room for it. I find them so comfortable compared to a lot of new furniture. Thanks for your blog about nothing (I think it should be called the blog about anything).

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Teresa – so true – it could be called the blog about anything but nothing too earth shattering

      1. patti

i think it could be called ‘the blog about anything and everything under the sun.’ (might as well make sure we cover everything. is the santa quilt yours? you are ready for the season. patti in florida

Thank you Mary for post my mother’s address. She has a lot of therapy to do to get stronger. She will be so surprised to receive cards (the staff will be busy delivering mail to Mother’s room!).
All the chairs are amazing. Diana, congratulations on all of your fair entries. You sure are brave to put your work in the fair.
