Another Cold Day, 5-19-26

Brrrr…I don’t think we even got up to 50 today and tonight is going to be cold again.

Took all my hanging geraniums off the railing as well. Spring in the Midwest!

I went on the wilderness trail again just to view this awful scene and so many more that I hadn’t noticed.

This was one of my favorite days of the year – my window washers came!!

Yes, they absolutely sparkle!!!

Reader quilts

And Hazel stayed in bed this morning after I got up – this is where I found her 2 hours later – on top of my own pillow!!!!

Mary, do you have any idea what your window washers use? They do look super duper clean. Lucky you!
    Ugh on the tree.

Mary, your windows so shine….how do you get them so clean. That’s so bad about tree. After the storms we’ve been having in Des Moines we have a lot a trees and limbs down. I’ve been loving all the plaid quilts

Lynette, so very sorry for the loss of your beloved horse. It’s so hard to lose any animal you’ve had for so long.
Mary, your Hazel is just too cute on your pillow. Good luck with the clean-up of the trail. It seems to be an ongoing struggle. All the quilts are lovely! I live all the plaids. Your windows really sparkle. Not mine. It’s been a bit rainy the last 2 days. We need it. It’s much cooler today also. It feels like fall again.

So cold is right. We had some cold rainy days as well but today it is warm, especially in the sun. Silly dogs that like to sleep in our pillows. Our sons poodle cross like to lay on your pillow, but only when you are also laying on it. He’s a big cuddler that’s for sure. Lynette so sorry to hear about losing your horse. It’s always so hard.

Mary, I think Hazel and Loretta secretly exchanged messages. Loretta moves to my pillow every morning.
I’m sorry to hear about the readers horse, losing a loved one is hard. Four legged or two legged.
Your wilderness trail is a mess. I got a battery operated little chain saw. It wouldn’t do the big tree, but it is great for broken branches, dead branches, small trees. The blade is only about 8-9” it’s not heavy and fairly powerful. It’s so handy and I love it.
Yesterday we had a lot of snow across the state. In Rawlins, about 100 miles or so from here, It got down to 8 degrees. The power went out and they couldn’t pump gas into the snow plows. There were 6 foot drifts. The interstate was closed, people were stranded, and no gas. Some were stranded on the hi-way for over 11 hours. Spring time in Wyoming. The hi-way patrol had to go to another town to get gas to help the most desperate. What a mess.
A lady at church this morning, shared pictures of her trip to the tulip festival. Oh, my. How beautiful.
    Love the sparkling windows.

Jo – oh, what a horrible inconvenience for those traveling!!! Is that more than unusual snow for this time of year? I’m very thankful we’re no longer afraid that it will snow but frost is another story. I’m sick of. Icing all those hanging pots of geraniums!!!!
Ah. Loretta is a pillow stealer, too!
I have a smaller trimmer too and I really love it but now what? I did call the tree guy but I think I’ll have to call a bigger company because this is huge! I decided to accomplish something today so I’m on the long arm. Ugh. And it’s not warm enough to enjoy mowing.
Yes, I feel sorry for Lynette – 29 years is such a long time to love an animal.
      Back to the long arm.

I have clean windows envy. Yours are beautiful. It’s so hard to find anyone around here to wash windows.
Thank you Rosanne, for the tip on where to find the pattern for the second quilt. I really like it.
We are in for more rain here in the west. We had a recent spell of rain at night and clear days. Perfect, but now supposed to rain 24/7 for a few days. We will see. I am anxious to plant beans, but not in a heavy rain period.

I was in a hurry when I wrote, the usual scramble to pick up before the cleaning lady comes! But the quilts are beautiful.
Mary your windows really sparkle! I haven’t heard much about all the dust on your road. Are they still raising dust with all the gravel trucks. The rain did a good job rinsing off the dirt in my windows! Yay!
Your wilderness trail is a mess, can someone help you push that big tree over with a tractor?

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – the gravel trucks must have finished about 10 days ago plus my dust control was applied by the county and then we got rain so all is good now. That’s why I waited to have the windows washed. After they’ve been here I can even spruce them up – they’re almost slick so dust doesn’t stick. It’s a mystery to me.
Well, our tractor isn’t big enough so I’m not sure what we’ll do – ask Tim maybe or get a tree service and pay through the nose.

Mary, You gave me a giggle this morning. Maybe it’s our age but why are we so excited about clean windows? This week that’s what’s on my schedule also – for me to do so I’m thankful I don’t have as many as you. Hazel sure thinks she’s the queen.
Last night I couldn’t sleep so I sat up and finished ‘Theo of Golden’ – what a great book. For sure I will read it again in the future.

Ha! Hazel loves your pillow. My mom had a white Maltese and he would go to bed before mom and sleep on her pillow. When mom came to bed ‘casey’ would growl when mom pushed him off. Haahaa.
Jay covered the potatoes. He has 2 and a half rows, so it wasn’t a big deal. If they do freeze it takes so long for them to come back. All the flowers and plants are in the garage. Do you think we dare plant them?
I got some mission sewing done and cards for birthdays and get well yesterday.
    Cleaning lady coming today.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – I really don’t know if I’m comfortable putting my plants out yet – wish I had potatoes in. Hazel does the exact same thing – when she does move down by my feet to sleep, she growls every time I try to reposition my feet or roll over!

Two wonderful plaid quilts today! The second one is a free pattern from Quilted Twins called Show Off (so many free patterns there). I have that quilt cut out and standing by.

    Mary —

Good morning! I’ve been quiet for a few days …… Sunday I had to put the horse down. Never ever easy, but part of life. I feel like my heart has been torn out of my chest. I will truly miss him – he was 29 and lived a very good life. That is my consolation.

Your blog (as you say “about nothing”) brightens my every morning. I’ve loved seeing all the plaid quilts, something I never really got into, but I do love seeing the creativity. Thank you. And sweet sweet Hazel on your pillow…… SO CUTE!!! You can tell how much she loves you.

Wish I had a chainsaw and lived closer and we could clear that path on the trail!!! All I have is a little pruning saw (which I love and is one of the best garden tools I’ve ever bought!!!). Hopefully these storms will dissipate — but I guess it’s springtime ……… I can relate – I hate hurricane season, but I love living where I do.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Lynette – oh, how I feel for you! It is really so hard on the one who has to make that decision but like you said, it’s part of life and life goes on but I always remain in a trance for days after.
I have a little pruning saw, too, that I make good use of – this job is going to be one for the experts. And it won’t be cheap. Ugh.

    2. Janice

Lynette, my heart goes out to you during this difficult time. Maybe down the road, you can share some of the fond memories you have of your horse with us. Janice, Traverse City area

Your windows look beautiful! I hope it doesn’t rain for at least a couple days.
Hazel is so funny. Apparently, she was tired this morning, and your pillow looked too comfy.
I love the 9-patch on point!

  13. Chris Lorenz

So sorry about your storm damage. I guess it’s part of the risk of living where we do in Iowa!

I love Hazel sleeping on your pillow! I have 2 cats, & one is particularly loveable & cuddly. She also has short curly hair so is always cold. She sleeps in my pillow right next to my head every night. When I get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, she’s right there waiting for me when I go back to bed! Quite comforting!

I enjoy your posts, usually first thing every morning.

Chris – if there’s any thunder, that’s where Hazel lays, too – right around my head!
