My hernia surgery is scheduled for September 8 and will include one night in the hospital. I was so hoping it would be outpatient. I was assured once again that cancer is not part of this – none to be found. I also learned that I have a wide hernia versus a narrow hernia which is good. With a narrow hernia the intestine can get caught in the small opening and become infected, cause a blood clot, etc. As my doctor said – he’s going to put the abs back together. Ha!
I got home as fast as I could to take the dogs to the pasture, feed them and do the chores before I met Becky for Thursday Night On Main – there’s only one left. Boo hoo! It’s been a nice outing every week for Becky and me and since it’s done in one week means that school is threatening.
Here are some photos from tonight – lots of dancers!

We always sit with Bob and Marline, Molly’s parents. It’s been a great summertime get together.

I stopped at Trader Joe’s today and bought an orchid and a rosemary plant.

Wish we had a Trader Joe’s around here.

I have another August birthday girl to tell you about but I’m too tired tonight. Go figure!

Great to hear that your cancer scan was clean. Yay! I love to shop at Trader Joe’s when I get to Rochester too. They have fun flowers/plant section. Looks like you found some fun ones, too. My night blooming cereus opened up last night. I’ve enjoyed it all day and am going to move it inside overnight in case it storms. What a beauty!! Only one bloom again…….
Rosemary – that plant is a one day wonder, isn’t it? I don’t even like the plant 364 days out of the year BUT the bloom is so extraordinary that it’s worth it. Would you like a pencil tree plant, Hoya, small jade? I can’t help myself – I keep starting more for fun but cold weather is approaching and I may have to ask Rick to move out so I can move the plants in!
Glad they got you on the schedule – sorry it’s an overnighter ☹️ hospitals (as you know!!) are the worst for rest.
I actually took a little road trip today to Trader Joe’s. There is t one close to me so I set out and stocked up on some favorites i like from there. I am trying a zhoug sauce – cilantro and jalapeno.for a chicken shawarma bowl I like to make. They have great plants too – your orchid is gorgeous 🤩 I purchased some cut flowers to brighten up my table!
Hi Mary
So glad the cancer scans are negative. Love that quilt posted by a reader. Looks complicated but I realize it’s not. Wow just gorgeous
My 3 year old apricot poodle that I adopted from the rescue is potty trained. Working on socialization. She was a breeding in the puppy mill in OKC. So it will take time.
Thanks again for the blog, I love all the animals and quilts and jokes😁
God bless you,
Bea knight
Bea – I just chatted with Teresa about puppy mills! I hate them more than anything in the world!! I hope her socialization goes well – I’m she can’t really understand how different her life is now – thank you for loving her!
Good news, Mary. This time you won’t be waiting as long to have the surgery. I’m sure your dogs were thrilled to see you when you got home.
Fran, the border around your quilt is so perfect – beautiful.
Sharon, I’m glad you addressed the fall right away. Feel better soon. Margie, condolences on the passing of your sister.
Have a good weekend all. 🙂

Mary I’m glad you are having the hernia surgery and so quickly. Staying over night in hospital isn’t the greatest I agree. The Trader Joe’s closest to us is in Bellingham, about 1hr 15min south of us. They just opened a new store can’t wait to go a little closer than the original Bellingham location and close to Costco. The two stores we go to. I just love going there. One of my favourite things is their Pub Cheese. It is a whipped sharp cheese and comes either plain or with jalapeño’s. The jalapeño one is our favourite. Once we have moved my hubby and I will go there for a few things.
I love your quilt, Fran. Your perfect border fabric looks great! I call quilts like yours “Happy Quilts” because they are colorful and bring joy:)
Mary, it is always nice to have good health news. The hernia surgery shouldn’t be too bad, but I understand about the overnight. Maybe you’ll have better care this time. Fingers crossed. With all the lifting and cleaning up you do, no wonder you have a hernia. The Thursday Night events in town look like so much fun. Have a good Friday:)
Diane – the hernia actually developed late last winter before I was doing all this lifting but I don’t suppose the lifting helped. I’ll have help this fall, don’t worry. You know, nobody is holding a gun to my head to work this hard – I want to do this!
I made it into the blog via email to post this morning.
Sorry about the little hernia. It’s good to stay one night for observation. Time flies and you will be way past it soon.
The quilt shown used cut 2 1/2″ sqs to be 2″ finished. Someone asked. But you could do larger of course.
Fran – oh, I’m so glad things are working for you now – it’s hard to know what’s wrong. I wouldn’t know either. I can only write the blog posts and leave comments – I’m pretty hopeless if there’s a problem. I’m old.

Mary, I’m so glad your scans are cancer free and the surgery will be an overnight stay even though your last time there didn’t go well so maybe this will be better and busted out quickly. Thanks to Hanks Mom for always lending a hand so many of us wish we could do but live too far.
I went to Trader Joe’s yesterday too! Ours is half hour drive and I take my ice chest always cause of road construction inevitably slowing my drive home. None yesterday thankfully but I was shocked that i walked out with two bags and I spent $98.00. Frozen turkey tenders at $9 a box was my expensive item.
It’ll be a meal when weather cools down and I can do some mashed potatoes and gravy with some frozen squash. I’ve never bought meat there but I love their cheese selections from all over the world. Got my basic pimento cheese spread as I like grilled sandwiches from that.
Kathy – since I’m not used to shopping at Trader Joe’s I don’t know what to buy.
Mary, I’m so glad your cancer scans are all negative and it’s hernia surgery instead! I lost my sister after 10 years of cancer May 24th. I’m still getting used to that. She was only 7 miles away. I’m so happy every time I hear you doing something with your sister. Thursday nights look fun!
Sharon, I’m sorry you fell. That is the worst feeling, going down. I was a mail carrier and fell many times on the ice.
Have a great day everyone, I’ll be headed to the SS office to see if I want to get my checks started. I’ve been working since I was 14, “took off” 27 years for the USPS and worked again for the last 15 so I should be eligible.
Your night on the town with Becky sure looks fun!!!Such a nice thing to do!!
That quilt looks so cool. Easy Peasy but stunning!
Afraid that’s me most days, doing nothing. Ha
Good luck with your surgery. I’m having my right hip replaced on September 18th and if it’s early enough I will go home that day! Don’t know the exact time until closer to the surgery. You would think if that is out-patient yours could be, too! I understand how you feel about staying in the hospital.
I love Trader Joe’s, too. Don’t have one near us where we live now. Only get to go when we go visit our kids.
I bought a beautiful orchid at Lowe’s a couple weeks ago. All it says you need to do is water it with 3 ice cubes once a week. So far it’s still beautiful!
It will be a relief to have that hernia repaired. I’m so glad that all of you scans came back negative for any signs of cancer. It’s fair week here so I have been out to see all of the beautiful quilts & needlework. This is the first year that I didn’t help hang quilts. We did get some relief from the heat this week but it’s due to heat up this weekend. This week I got my sauerkraut fermenting in a crock in the basement. Beets are canned, green beans picked but I’m still waiting for my first ripe tomato. I have to drive an hour to get Trader Joe’s & that might be a good thing.
Hi Mary, hope your hernia surgery goes smoothly, take it easy when you get home! Rain tonight and a few days of cold weather due,Bella is mildly whining, wants to get on the bed, so l best go! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy
Mary – Sorry you have a hernia. I hope your hospital experience is better this time. You know what to expect, anyway.
I fell in my home last Saturday and hit my head on a wooden box. I face planted and had to go to urgent care. I have a cut above my upper lip which required three stitches. My nose wasn’t broken, but my nose has a bruise. My whole body was shaken and I aches all over. After Urgent Care, I went to the hospital ER for a cat scan of my head and neck. I get the stitches out Saturday and have a follow-up doctor appointment on the 18th. It’s been an experience I do not want to repeat!
Monday I have Renewal by Andersen scheduled to install 7 windows. It’ll be nice to have windows that open.
I love the quilt with the 16 squares in the blocks.
Take care everyone.
Sharon, I feel bad for you describing your terrible fall. It is frightening. And stitches in your face has to be uncomfortable. 7 years ago I took a face first fall and am so very careful now. I didn’t go for a head scan as I should have as a doctor friend later told me there could be so many serious issues that arise from a fall so I’ve learned my lesson to go now when you hit your head.
On a lighter note you will be thankful for the investment of new windows by Renewal by Anderson. We had them install three in our bedroom and it’s made such a difference with less road noise and they move much better than my old windows. I’m so glad we did it as well as had competent installers who did a good job informing us of everything they were doing. We gave them glowing responses on the survey.
Good luck and hope your weekend Sharon is a restful one.
Love the reader’s sentiment regarding doing nothing. The quilt in the photo is so pretty. I wonder how big the squares are. We just had a horrific rain storm blow through. More rain is is expected later tonight. I don’t know when the area wheat farmers will be able to combine (around New Town, ND).
