Great quilts!

I finished this book today and asked my library to get me the sequel it was so good. It’s about a troubled little girl who becomes violent with her mother – the angst and heartbreak they all go thru is resolved with a shocking ending only to be resumed in the next book called Dear Hanna.

I had a couple questions about the chartreuse plant that I like so much. I told a reader it was one of those Walmart plants and I thought it was a type of philodendron but then I said it just couldn’t be!

But look at this – it IS a philodendron and the description says it’s rare ….. remember I’ve always said to buy plants from Walmart when they get a new shipment – before the employees can either drown them or let them die of thirst, one or the other. (See the bar of soap below the leaves to keep the squirrels away.)

So then I looked up this plant, too – also from Walmart on the same day.

And then I looked up this plant I’ve had for years and years.

It’s supposed to bloom but mine never has.

I know you’re not going to believe this BUT we had 60-65 mph gusts of wind early this morning and more limbs in the grove came down plus here’s my yard again – just as I had pronounced it finished.

I did not have the energy to pick up my daily allotment of walnuts. Sigh.

And I just have to close with this card I received yesterday. It tells the story, doesn’t it?

So sorry to see more tree branches down, which means more mess for you to clean up. Wonderful quilts on display at the North Dakota state fair. Well, next week at this time the movers will have taken all our things to storage. Then we have to clean the house for the final time. We will be staying next door from next Wednesday to the following Tuesday babysitting their dog Max then off to my mom’s for 3.5 weeks. I can’t wait. I’m very tired of packing and then looking for something and realizing I’ve packed it then having to make do. Oh well. It’s all for a good reason. Once we move into the new place and unpack it will be worth it. Funny though, 10 days after moving in I’m off four and our day quilt retreat. Well deserved I’d say. Have a wonderful day to everyone.

Great quilt photos today. Always fun to see what’s entered at the fair. And the homespun quilt looks like a perfect gift for a boy. Sorry to hear that you had another round of tree damaging wind. Clean up is such a pain and a lot of work.

Plastic forks of all things. What a great idea. Walmart philodendrons rock especially among the rocks. Maybe the winds will blow some of the heat out. My gosh how dangerous to have to be out with velocities like that.

  4. Carolyn Rector of Ohio

Thinking of you back in Rochester. Hope all goes well today. Very disheartening to see more tree branches come down.
Love the card you sent at the end!
And I loved the quilt show.

It sure is a great quilt show today. Mary, I’m so sorry to see your yard – again. It would be wonderful if a scout troup or high schoolers were looking for some extra money and would come out and clean up debris. Hopefully your visit at Mayo is going off without any trouble, we’re rooting for you. Our weather here (southern Minnesota) will be brutal for a couple days so I’ll be indoors sewing.

Mary, I’m so happy your 6 month check was clear! Those checkups are so nerve wracking, aren’t they? Today, I will be waiting for the outcome of your visit with the specialist about your hernia.
So many quilts with all sorts of talent and color and combinations. Beautiful!
I did see that warning about the wind knocking down damaged limbs for yesterday. Doesn’t surprise me when you had so much damage the first time. So sorry.
It’s going to get warm for a couple days! Stay in and sew! I’m going to…
    Take care!

Beautiful quilts this morning, so much inspiration! And that card is too cute, let’s all take a break and have a cold one!

Love the house plants. My kitchen window has been filled with orchids the last 6-7 years but I am now down to two and two Christmas or Thanksgiving or Easter cactus, they bloom off and on all the time. I’m thinking of replacing my orchids with unusual house plants similar to yours, I can’t keep up with the feeler roots put out by the orchids.

I’m getting my birthday card out today, I missed the mail yesterday.

I’m going to say a little prayer that God quits pruning your trees for you, you need a break. Blessings!

Linda – I used to have several
Orchids and I put them outside in the summer – I remember giving them to friends and now I want some again – they did well on my east window sills. I’ll check Walmart!!!!

Lovely quilts, thank you. To make a desert flower bloom, try not watering it for 3 or 4 weeks, then giving it a good drink (mimicking conditions in the desert).

I LOVE the duck splashing in the puddles. Looking at that glee first thing in the morning will bring a smile to your face for a wonderful start of the day. The rest of the quilts are so beautiful, the detailed work involved – love to admire them as I know they won’t be created by my hands. Oh, did that shed roof get damaged by the tree limb? Think of these downed limbs as nature doing your pruning for you. Like flowers, a trim here, and a snip there makes for a healthier plant.

I have a tote full of homespun’s I should sew some quilts up with as they are so appealing. I love the one shown and all the others from the fair. Good show!
I hope your drive today is safe and sound and those pets come out to greet you again so happy you’re back home. I can’t believe all this wind you are getting and the damage to clean up isn’t an easy chore. So much wildfires smoke all over. We are so dry and brown now here and no rain for the next 7 days they predict. Last night we got a little rain and I stood out in it even just to feel those raindrops as it has been awhile since we’ve had rain.

Wow beautiful quilts will be displayed at Faire , thanks for sharing, love your WALMART PLANT , next time Walmart gets green plants I will shop for some interesting ones, were to 🥵 hot ‘118 these days also, lots of pollution due to many fires out West🥲

  12. kit

card is hysterical and way too true (all at the same time!)

More yard work and its not mowing 🙁 I sure enjoyed the show of quilts from ND. So many wonderful quilts on display.

  14. Jeanie S, Central IL

I love the first quilt posted, and the fair quilts are wonderful.
I hope your appointment tomorrow goes well.
    Take Care, Mary 🥰

Is there a specific brand of soap to keep the squirrels away? They absolutely tore my planted containers up. Dirt and plan4s everywhere! Hope your visit with the specialist goes well. So sorry the winds are still doing damage by you.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Carolyn – Irish Spring or Zest which I had to order online. It does keep them away although I also bought a powder that I sprinkle around the pots sometimes. They destroyed my huge Jade a couple years ago and since then I’ve been using soap.

      1. Sue in Marion, IN

I had a cute little black squirrel coming onto our deck and digging up my potted plants. I read another quilter’s suggestion to stick plastic forks around the edges of the pot, tines up. It’s been working all summer! Looks a little odd, but I DON’T CARE. 😊

  16. Marie C

A great quilt show. I love the duck quilt. It is so happy. I’m so sorry to see you have more trees to clean up. When we have lost trees due to a storm it seems like nothing can get back to normal until they are all cleaned up. Take it easy and be safe.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Marie – yes! My life seems out of whack when there’s a yard mess to clean up and I didn’t work at it today because I needed to rest my back for the drive tomorrow.

  17. Sara in Indiana

The homespun quilt looks so cozy, and the fair quilts are amazing. Was glad to hear your follow up went well on Wednesday, but be very careful with the hernia surgery. For some it is a breeze, and I hope it is for you, too, but I have a woman friend who had an abdominal hernia surgery and she had complications (requiring more surgery) afterwards, which may have been due to her over stressing the incision. Besides the weight-lifting restrictions, I think they should have also warned her to take it easy on twisting and bending, even normal twisting and bending.

  18. Gail in Ohio

My, oh my! More clean-up to do! I am so sorry!
Thanks for the narrative on the plants – really interesting!

  19. Carol Nichols

I got my pattern yesterday for ‘30 Stars… ‘. Thank you so much! I look forward to making it. I appreciate that you make your patterns available to those of us who missed them when they first came out out.
