April 1, 2023

We woke up to snow – no April Fool’s joke. Not much snow but the ground is white again.

I dreamed about basketball last night and was so keyed up I had trouble getting to sleep. I hope Lisa Bluder gets Coach of the Year – she deserves it. Dawn Staley, S. Carolina’s coach, scares me – she can really give a look and yell at her players! I’d be so afraid of making a wrong move if I were them. Even their height last night couldn’t keep Iowa down even though they were soooo much taller.

Tomorrow’s championship game starts at 2:30 on ABC – I wouldn’t miss it for the world. We have Palm Sunday services on Sunday night – oh, thank goodness the game isn’t scheduled as an evening game! Somebody else would have to play for the service and the choir, don’t you think? Haha!!!

The Dirty Dozen number for April is 1 – one.

April’s color is green – perfect for spring and green grass that surely will come back again.

So…. GREEN ONE for April!

Reader Quilts

Great quilt show, Ladies! Thanks for sending your photos!

GO HAWKS!

There’s a story in a South Carolina newspaper that Dawn Staley is upset about the way her players style.
Lisa Bluder had said that someone compared the Gamcocks playing as a “Bar Fight”. The coach is not amused. Yep I can see why she would be formidable. She added a few other adjectives that people had used for her players. That’s what you get when you play on a national stage.

    Great Quilts today!

Dee – yes, I’ve heard this and I think Dawn Staley is a poor loser. Her girls towered over Iowa players – bar fight? Would you expect them to sit back and let the other team run all over them? I think not.

Snow for us too and, lots of it. Got 15 inches last night to add to the 6 we had the night before. More expected tomorrow. This is crazy, even for NE Wisconsin!
Must have been a great game yesterday. I checked the score at halftime and the final this morning. I can see why you would be excited for tomorrow’s game.

Happy to here about your Iowa girls, good luck the rest of the way.
    all the quilts are beautiful.

I forgot to add my name to the chicken quilt, table runner, and placemats. Probably because I stayed up wayyyy past my bedtime to watch Iowa win!
Ok-I am old and need to see the eye Dr. I thought the sun behind the cute dinosaur quilt was someone with a funny hat on until I enlarged. Toooo funny😹😹😹.
We’ll be listening to the first half on the radio because we’ll be at the Falconry school for my husband and adult kids to have the falcons and hawks land on them. Neat.

Love all the quilts, but the fluffy tailed bunny quilt brought the biggest smile to my face. Such fun!

  6. Nancy from W. PA

I was rooting for Iowa because of you and I’ve never watched a women’s basketball game in my life. Had to check the score before I went to bed. Maybe I’ll watch it tomorrow afternoon.

Nancy – thank you for watching – just on my account. That was very sweet – some of my “good” friends didn’t watch. What???? Then don’t read the blog either.

I agree with you, Mary. I like to see the coaches’ reactions to their team. S.C. coach wasn’t having a problem with her team when they won all those previous games. The S.C. girls do deserve a lot of credit for that. I like Iowa’s coach as she is always so nice to an interviewer when they ask her what seems to be the same question over and over. She remembers their names and always thanks them. She knows they are just trying to do their job. It’s also nice to see a coach smiling at her players and Ms Blunder does. S.C. came into that game expecting to win and Iowa came to give that game their best. Iowa played hard and fair. I hope they win tomorrow and that Lisa Blunder gets Coach of the Year.

Hi Mary, another great quilt show!Glad your basketball team won, I’m not into sport, could never see the ball during sports lessons! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

I, like you, was pretty wound up after the game…best game I have watched all year!!! I had a hard time going to sleep! We got up to 5 inches of beautiful snow this morning here in Rochester Minnesota. Beautiful on the trees and everything too. Lots of sun today, wind this morning! Hoping to see the final game tomorrow!!!

Great quilt show again. So much talent. The Hawkeyes were phenomenal again but it started out shaky. Biting my nails until the game tomorrow afternoon. We recorded the game last night and I think I’ll record the game tomorrow for posterity. GO HAWKS!!!!!🏀

Dawn Staley was sooo sure it was going to be 2 SEC conference teams in the finals – ha! The Hawks showed them! Jan Jensen got assistant coach of the year so I would think Lisa Bluder would too.
I remember Jan Jensen when I was in HS. I never played against her but I remember how good she was.
    GO HAWKS!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Brenda – I remember her, too, and I heard a stat last night that in a 6 on 6 game during her high school career, she scored 105 points!

The chicken placemats are sooo cute Diane! I am tired too from staying up late but it was worth it. Both my husband and I were so engrossed in Iowa’s team and not too happy to see the poor sportsmanship on the face of the SC coach when it wasn’t in her favor. There’s a winner and there’s a loser and that’s just how it works.
I love the string quilts whomever made them. It was such a nice quilt show today.
Today I went to a new quilt shop and I went down a rabbit hole….bought some Moda toweling on a roll to make some runners and placemats. I bought two runner patterns for appliqué on them but it will be a nice diversion from bigger quilts for a change.

    1. Diane and the gang

Hi Kathy, Good for you for helping the quilt world economy😀😂. Thanks for your comment. It was a fun project😀

  13. Joy in NW Iowa

    I love all!! The quilts!
As for the game, the friends I talked to that watched it said the SC coach was just plain mean to the players! I’m so happy Iowa won! Wish them the best!
Storms were nasty yesterday. We up her the northwest corner had a little snow. Our prayers for those that were in the storms. So sad and devastating!
    Have a good Sunday.

  14. Sue in Oregon

Diane…Your chicken and rooster sets are SO cute. So farmhouse and perfect. I love all the quilts today. The bunny is adorable and the string potholders so perfect. I need to make some of those, too.
All this talk about the girl’s championship basketball tomorrow makes me want to watch. Don’t know if we will be able to get it, though. Good luck to Iowa. They sound like a great team.

    1. Diane and the gang

Thanks, Sue. I originally bought enough just for placemats. Obviously, I went back for more😹

  15. Vicki Ibarra

For the person who made the potholders (or anyone with that experience): How do you insulate them? I have used InsulBright and don’t like the crinkle sound. Has anyone just used batting? Or what else?

  16. Diane and the gang

For those of us in the East, I think the NCAA game is 3:30? Is that correct?

    1. Beverly in O-H-I-O

Yes Diane & gang, it’s 3:30 for us here in Ohio. On behalf of Mary – Go Hawks !

  17. Helen Jane (TX)

Hi Mary…we were watching “the basketball game” last night. What a Game! Will be tuned in Sunday. Caitlin was “laser focused”…I just knew you were cheering loudly and maybe a little on edge. I “luv” b/ball 🏀…Congratulations to All the Team…

  18. Jan Frank-de Ois, an Iowa alumnae

YES!! GO HAWKS!! They were SO amazing against S. Carolina, so much bigger & taller than our Iowa women.

  19. Sharon G.

Mary – What a wonderful quilt show! Lots of talented quilters. Wow!

I’m looking forward to watching the Iowa basketball 🏀 game tomorrow! I even set a reminder on the TV.

I did go into my sewing room today and turned on my sewing machine. As you, Rosie, and others suggested. Instead of sewing, I turned on my sewing machine and looked through all of my quilt patterns. And guess what I found? Yours and Connie’s Bull’s Eye #307 pattern, copyright 2004! I couldn’t believe it. What a wonderful surprise! I have no idea when or where I bought it, but what a great find! 🙂

Earlier today I took a walk and about a block from home, it started hailing! That’s right, hail on April 1st. But, that’s the weather in the Pacific Northwest, rain one minute, sunshine the next. Wasn’t expecting hail though. 😂

Sharon – so glad you spent some time in your sewing room! Hope the game is a good one for Iowa tomorrow – makes me nervous.
