LSU 102, Iowa 85

Iowa ran into a hot LSU team today and lost the championship game. LSU hit an amazing 74% versus the normal 19% in a recent game giving them a large lead even though Iowa shortened the gap in the third quarter.

Have you ever heard of Iowa Nice? Angel Reese should have been penalized for taunting Caitlin Clark when she pointed to the ring she marked on her finger. The Iowa girls wouldn’t act like that and they didn’t spend hours on false eyelashes, heavy makeup and hair extensions.

It is what it is – I’m very disappointed but Iowa has such a great coach in Lisa Bluder who didn’t scream at the refs to call fouls on the opposing team. I would have been embarrassed by her behavior if she had acted in that manner. LSU is a very talented team – very tall and aggressive but that’s how one wins a championship.

Congratulations to the Iowa Hawkeyes and Caitlin Clark! You’re all winners in my eyes!

I couldn’t even tell you what mens teams are playing tomorrow night – I’ve had a one track mind with the women’s tourney.

It’s Palm Sunday – I’m off to church tonight for a community Lenten service.

I went to Palm Sunday services this morning and just finished making palm crosses out of the palm branch I brought home with me—thinking crosses will dry better for the long term. Tonight I am attending a Seder dinner at a friend’s church. We had signed up to go in April 2020 but we all know what happened to those plans! I’m looking forward to it.

Babysitting tomorrow means I will be up at 4 am to get to the Springs before the kids need to leave for work.

68 today. 60’s tomorrow. Snow on Tuesday. ❄️

I participated in a Seder meal years ago at another church in town. All I can say is that I’m glad I don’t have to eat that in my world today. It was awful.

The Women’s Iowa basketball team are a class act! They didn’t play as well as they have in previous games but they are still a great basketball team. So proud of them and all they’ve accomplished this season! Go Hawkeyes!!

  3. Linda from Georgia

Sorry about your Iowa loss. I know how you feel since my Miami Hurricanes fell to UConn last night. I am so proud of them for making the final four. They were such a fun team to watch this year! I was hoping for an all Florida final with FAU vs Miami and Miami being victorious. Oh well. Life goes on. Have a good evening.

Poor sportsmanlike conduct on Reese’s behavior taunting Caitlin like that. I did not like that at all. Seems like the refs favored LSU. They played their heart out and there’s always next year. Proud of your Hawks !

Loved watching the Iowa team. One of them, Gabbie Marshall, went to a local high school that regularly won state championships. The whole nation is now Iowa fans, and really looking forward to Caitlin Clark and Iowa basketball next year.

Disappointed that our Iowa Hawks didn’t pull off a win today, but they did well to get to the Finals. They are still a class act and were “Iowa nice” during both of those two last rough games. Lisa is still the top coach as far as Im concerned. She really cares about her girls and sets a great example of sportsmanship. Jeanne in Co.

Watched the game, too. And disappointed with the end result, but Iowa has nothing to be ashamed about. They are a class act!!
That other team showed some disgusting behavior. And the coach is a real piece if work.

They played an excellent game Mary and should be very proud of how far they came as well as acted with dignity. Those false eyelashes just threw me for a loop. Down home Iowa girls are more our speed and I am glad they held their heads high and did not stoop as low as some of the other teams behavior.
We look forward now to next year to have another year to follow the amazing Iowa girls team.
Today at our Palm Sunday service I found myself tearing up during some of the music and I had to wipe my face so I guess I got emotional. It’s a week of reflection of hope and renewal.

Mary – glad I was in good company with you feeling the same. Do you have to play Thursday night and Good Friday? Our church is open all day Friday for those who wish to come in.

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Kathy – we have a community cross walk on Friday so no service for me to play for. Margaret is going to her daughter’s on Easter so I’ll be handling it all alone – so Thursday and Sunday and then a welcome break.

Sorry that the Iowa girls lost. They have a lot to be proud about. Sad to see the deterioration of good sportmanship. These days sure aren’t like the past. I’m often appalled by the behavior of some. I sure don’t understand the makeup and dress.

Hopefully your weather has not been too bad. Friends in Arkansas and Indiana made it through the tornadoes and storms. All said it was very scary.

So siery they lost, Mary. We had to listen on the radio, but I taped it. I will watch tomorrow. The Iowa women are a class act and can hold their heads high for the way they behaved and played. They had to be tired after the SC game. And, coming in second after sooo many games is still very good!

  11. Linda McMillan

I agree Mary. I loved watching the Iowa girls play. I thought they had quite a few bum calls from the refs.

It was sad to watch, but Iowa proved they are definitely a class act. Unfortunately the refs called 12 fouls in the first quarter, some questionable on both teams, but it hurt Iowa with that short bench. The gal who came off the LSU bench and drilled 21 points is a grad student who played four years for West Virginia. Mulkey arrived at LSU with little talent and took full advantage of the portal. I look forward to seeing Caitlyn have another stellar year or two. Perhaps a couple of those entering the portal will want to join her!

    1. Cathy D

Exactly! In my opinion the LSU women followed the example set by their coach. Miss Angel was definitely not an angel in her taunts toward Caitlin. Such a lack of unsportmanship displayed! I am proud that Caitlyn did not react. Unfortunately there were poor calls made against both teams, with Iowa bearing the brunt of them. Sad to have a game assisted by poor officiating. The Iowa women had a tremendous season and have nothing to be sorry for. Be proud Hawks 🖤💛

Aren’t you a week early, Susie? Jesus hadn’t even been crucified yet. Yesterday was Palm Sunday, not Easter.

  13. Julie B from CF

That technical on Caitlyn was ridiculous….obvious the refs were out for her. The LSU coach looked like she should have been dancing on a pole.

      1. Janet S

Julie B, You have a great sense of humor and I agree. The entire LSU team and coach were super aggressive and not always in a good way. I even felt the announcers were favoring LSU. Waiting for next year.

  14. Beth Laverty

My college is playing in the men’s side Basketball tournament
…… San Diego State. I graduated MANY years ago but still proud of the team. They have never been there before.

  15. Linda

I just love Caitlin…She did an amazing job —the pep talk she gave her team when the game was over…We never got the technical on Caitlin….a lot of bad foul calls on Iowa…

  16. Jane Dumler

The LSU coach set the tone for the way her team acted and looked. I never thought false eyelashes were part of a basketball uniform or sequined jackets for the coach. Iowa played well and they were a class act today. Nothing wrong with a good Midwest upbringing!

  17. Jean Elliott

I agree about the rudeness of two of the LSU girls. At least Caitlin had enough class not to react. The LSU girls need a lesson in sportsmanship. Maybe their coach could have a little talk with them, but probably not.

  18. Glenda Fletcher

Mary, I agree with you and everyone. The Iowa girls should hold their heads up high as they played hard
    to the very end.

  19. Jeanie S, Central IL

The Iowa girls played their hearts out and should be proud of their entire season. We look forward to following them next year. The Iowa coach is a class act.

  20. Tanya T. in Houston

I can only say I supported your girls and team! That tiger print that the LSU coach wore must have been 100% polyester and I bet she sweated through it!!! Next game, the refs should watch how many times she puts her feet on the court, too! Totally agree with your comments. So sorry! You win a few, you lose a few, but you’ve got to suit out for them all

  21. Brenda in Iowa

I was embarrassed by the way the LSU team and coach acted. I believe it was the LSU coach who said prior to the start of the Final Four games that it was going to be great having 2 SEC teams in the championship game. I thought that was pretty cocky of her.
I, too, am proud of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Coach Bludder, and Caitlyn.

  22. Jeanine from Iowa

America saw the actions of the Hawkeyes versus the LSU girls, and the coaches as well. I am so proud of how our girls conducted themselves on the court and at the end of the game. They truly are a class act, and being second in the nation is still a great accomplishment. Look how many teams did not make it to the Final Four. We are very proud of their accomplishments this past year and look forward to next year.

  23. Barbara Yarnell

Agree 100%. Was very proud of the way the Iowa Ladies conducted themselves. LSU women, from the coach on down looked like hussies. But they played well and won. Congratulations to all!

  24. Lynne from NJ

I’m sorry Iowa lost but they had a great run!
I hope to see more of their games next season.

  25. Liz Schrader

I totally agree with your comments about the Lady Hawkeyes. Their team and coach were way more classy throughout the tournament! They were ladies on the basketball court and off and should be proud to play in finals!

  26. Kathy Hanson

I watched the game and was sad at the end but the the women did so well and made everyone proud! They are an amazing team and such fun to watch!

  27. Catherine M Platzer

I too agree Iowa presented themselves very well. That other coach was not nice and not a good rle model for her team. I felt bad Iowa lost, but they played a really good game the right way.
    Cathy from Minnesota

  28. Sharon G.

So sorry Iowa lost, but the team and coach should be very proud of their accomplishments!
Hope you are staying safe from the weather and you aren’t snowed in.
    Take care,
    Sharon

    Hello, Mary,
Just wonderiing if you received the book I sent. The Wonkey Donkey….thought it would be inspire you with your book. Enjoy Lee

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Lee! I couldn’t find your email anywhere so I did thank you on the blog. I told you I’m very familiar with Wonky Donkey – I have given it as a gift 5 or 6 times. One of the books actually had a button to push to make the sound of a braying donkey. There was no name or address on the package anywhere – my only clue was that you said you were sending something. I’ve also watched a YouTube video of a grandma reading it to a child and laughing and laughing. You should look it up. It’s pretty funny really. I never did keep a copy for myself so I am thrilled to get it!
      Thank you!

Lee- you need to let me know you read this. I have no other way to thank you!

      1. Lee Bowers

Mary. I read your comment. I have also given the book many times and have listened to you tube.
Good luck with your book… I was always a big fan of Susannahs… the goat that thought she was a dog.
