Brrrr! 2-27-24

Right now it’s 9 degrees with a wind chill of -14 degrees! Just checked the barn to make sure the heater was working because it has not been on for awhile now.

I finished up two projects today but hoping for the wind to go down so I can take the pictures.

Reader photos and recipes

Tomorrow night is the next Caitlin game – I’ll have to leave choir practice early to get home by 8:00. The last game of the season is Sunday – how can it already be over? (Rhoda – thank you so much for the newspaper articles from Honolulu and Las Vegas – so much fun to read them both!)

Lots of time to sew these days – but no time to clean!

Cold here too. Windy day today but worse Wednesday. Starting at 2 am till 5 pm we are going to have 60+ mph wind. Saturday we had a 73 mph iwind gust in Cheyenne. The wind even took down part of a cottonwood tree that landed on a weatherman’s pickup! He said maybe it was poetic justice for his lousy weather reports. He does have a sense of humor. The leaves on the flower quilt look so real and 3D. I’m hoping everyone stays warm as winter returns for a few days.

Wasn’t it funny to see that picture of the weatherman’s truck! It’s not funny, but a funny picture.

Hi Mary, cool and wet in wellington today, made soup with chicken carcass, mushrooms, garlic, carrots, spring onions and frozen mixed vegetables, chicken stock and soy sauce, no quantities, just throw together and taste!. My new tablet is now in use, so quicker service.
Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

Thank you everyone for your soup recipes! Thank you Mary for posting them all. I love soup and I don’t have many good recipes….. can’t say that anymore. 🙂

  4. Janet S

Very clever quilt today. This weather sure is a challenge cold for a few days and record breaking heat for the weekend. The wind is terrible so stay safe.

I got a kick out of watching the “buzzer beaters” from last nights men’s basketball games. Today show this morning had clips of them and fun to feel their excitement. Thanks for posting helpful recipes. Soup goes a long ways in our house. We sure don’t eat the big meals like we did in our younger years. We are prepared for the wild weather coming this way in a few hours after record warmth yesterday. End of February and I had bare feet walking on my concrete patio while dogs basked in warmth.

I laughed about “no time to clean”! That is so true..lol.
We have rain and temperatures to be in the 60’s.
Then the wind will arrive tonight and temps will plummet. It will be back to winter.
Enjoy some soup and sew! Thanks for the recipes everyone and Mary, thank you for posting!

  7. Kim from Wi

We have been traveling the past few weeks and last night we ate dinner in Columbus, Georgia at a place called The Cannon. One of the tables next to us was talking about Caitlyn and how she has invigorated womans basketball and been so gracious to those who interview her. Our waitress informed them that we were from Wisc, close relatives of Iowa. Lol! We informed them that Iowa is Nice, just like Caitlyn and that my parents are from a town called Osage. Iowa loves basketball and wrestling. Caitlyn has been amazing to watch, so glad that I’m DVRing her games while gone. Today we will tour the Infantry Museum, just outside the gates to Fort Benning Army Base. Its 70 here and sunny.

Kim – oh, I didn’t know you were traveling! Good thing because it’s 2 degrees this morning!! Yes, Caitlin is Iowa Nice and we are all proud of her, even our WI neighbors!

It’s 15 here in KC but supposed to get to 43 today! Mary you are “too fun to clean”! Leanne Morgan my favorite comedian has a T-shirt that says this. She is hilarious and a clean comic. She was just here in KC and my husband took me for a late Valentine’s gift. She has a Netflix special and YouTube videos. She’s a hoot! I am skipping the bar tonight but hopefully will find a radio station with the Iowa game. I will really miss watching but will definitely catch Sunday’s game.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Donna Jo – I’m going to look her up – I’ve never heard of her but I think I’d like her. Wind chill this morning is -22!

      1. Mary Etherington Post author

DONNA JO AND DAN!! Holy smokes, literally! A box of KC barbecue? You’ve got to be kidding me – all because of Caitlin Clark and Iowa basketball? You are the best – good grief, how we will enjoy this gift!! My readers are the very best – not only do I not have time to clean, I hate to cook, too. Haha! I am in shock. I have to sit down.

        1. Donna Jo

Mary, you are so welcome! I love reading your blog and Dan hears about it every day! I sure hope we get to meet someday!

    2. Sharon G.

Donna Jo and Mary – Leanne Morgan is hilarious! Watch her story about t-ball on you-tube and you’ll be hooked! 😂

      My soup recipe:
Empty 2 – 18.5 oz. cans of Progresso Chicken Tortilla Soup into a pan; heat and serve with your favorite bread, Texas toast, or crackers. Serve hot with a dollop of sour cream. Delicious and easy.

Prayers for everyone in the path of the wildfires in the panhandle of Texas. 🙏

Crazy weather! Like a rollercoaster! The lawn is white! I think I will make some chilli! I don’t have a recipe…never did…it’s hamburger, beans, onion, tomato juice and spices and a little brown sugar 😉.
I’m hanging out in my hobby cave!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – I have something to go out for today but wish I didn’t. That’s how I make chili, too.

  10. Joanne

My thought exactl no time to clean when there’s quilting to be done. I saved a quote I found yrs ago – people will see your quilts long after your gone ….. not your housework! So that’s been my motto for yrs now!!

  11. Sunflower 🌻 from Michigan

Our weather has really changed too. 52 on our walk this morning and now it’s only 30 but getting colder and so windy!
I’ll be watching the game tonight.
Thanks for the soup recipes, I’m going to try the Vermont cheddar soup after I buy the cheese.
Have a good day everyone. Stay warm and safe.

  12. Jo in Wyoming

Soups on. My coffee cup says “So much clutter, so little time” with a very happy face on it.
Hang on to your hats, this wind is brutal. We get a touch of spring fever, then back to winter.
I think my new neighbors are ready to move in …finally. They have redone the house. Relocate stairs, took down walls, moved windows. A whole new kitchen, bathrooms and laundry rooms. It will be fun having them living there.

    1. Jan Hebert

Isn’t it fun seeing what others do to existing homes? We live across the street from where my husband grew up. The house was built in 1795ish, and when his parents passed we just couldn’t afford to keep the house in the family. A young couple bought it, gutted it, moved the front staircase, removed the back staircase and put in all new kitchen, pantry, a master bedroom with ensuite gorgeous bathroom along with lots of other changes. They may as well have built a new house! It did come out beautiful though and now the family that bought it from them have put in a new driveway and are having an inground pool put in! The kicker is that there is no door to enter the house near the garage – they have to put up their garage door to get in the house from this side of it and when company comes they have to walk all the way from the driveway leading to the garage to the front door which is around the corner! The UPS drivers and FedEx guys always leave packages by the garage doors – even though there’s a covered porch where the front door is. It’s just crazy! Jan in MA

Had to laugh as I clicked the ads, Mary; three for MAX and two for Peacock! When I did a little exploring, AI said the ads are chosen using the content of the website I’m viewing. Just a little late in the season for Peacock, don’t you think? Everyone has been talking about Caitlyn and Peacock for months! Now why haven’t I been getting quilt-related ads? Will soup ads be next?

Speaking of soup: Here is mine for Tomato Soup. Open a can of Progresso Tomato Basil soup and pour in pan. Add a 12 oz. bottle/can of Spicy Hot V-8 juice. Heat to a simmer and serve with your favorite grilled cheese sandwich (I recommend pepper jack). Warms you inside and out! Kris

    1. Diane in Maryland

      Kris and Sharon G.,

I am going to try your soup recipes! They sound very good and quick.

Mary, another good idea! Thank you.

  14. San

Goodness Mary, What an extreme weather change. Hope all of your critters are okay.

My daffodils are blooming, but it’s raining with a cold wind today. Do take care.

I made the chicken stovetop and motarella cheese dish for dinner tonight and they all loved it. I didn’t cook the stuffing so it got crispy.

  16. Charlotte in No. California

I’m sorry it’s so cold back there. We are going to have rain, wind and snow down to 2000 ft. this weekend.
I want to try the Salsa White Chicken Chili and the Vermont Cheddar Soup. I’ve never heard of Vermont cheddar cheese. Is it sharp or mild?
I love the plant quilt….looks so real.

    1. Linda Everett

Sharp cheddar cheese. Vermont cheese is usually white not yellow but any cheddar will work. I make this often.

  17. Diane, Squeak, & Buddy in Central Ohio

We woke up at 5:45 to loud severe weather alerts on our phones and the tornado sirens blaring! Luckily, we did not lose power, most schools in Central Ohio were on 2 hour delays, and it was very windy. It was 63* and then went to 36*. It was very windy all day and is now 25* going to 22 or less! I repaired two pairs of pants for son and nephew, sewed around sorority letters for grand daughter, and cut the last block for a 3 yard quilt which I hope to finish tomorrow. I made Zippy chili on Monday and we went out to lunch for a friend’s bday🎂😀. Busy, busy. And, hubby is brace free and driving after 6 weeks in the brace! More sewing tomorrow.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Diane – oh, thank goodness, he can drive again! Our weather came to you – I wore my parka to church tonite!!!

  18. Mary Etherington Post author

Diane – I just recently learned about Jacy’s sister and have seen her in the crowd on highlight reels. OSU is going to be a barn burner game, isn’t it? It starts at noon and I’m going to have to talk to Pastor so I can get home in time – I just want Caitlin to set some high records that will stand the test of time. Congrats on Big Ten Champs – now on to March Madness – sure wish I could be in Mpls. Iowa just killed Minnesota tonight – poor girls, they didn’t stand a chance.

  19. Rhoda Ebersole

Glad you received the articles – one never knows.
    Caitlin is very famous.

Stay warm and keep those animals warm.

We in LV are being warned about the high winds coming Friday and Saturday.
