Cards Needed! 7-18-25

My friend, Sherry in Texas, has recently been in the hospital where she experienced seizures. She’s home now with some other health problems but lonely and could use a cheerful thought in a card. She had a quilt shop in Texas when I first met her. Will you send her a card?

……….

I’ve been shopping – went to the Quilted Steeple just outside Lone Rock, IA to get some inspiration. And I definitely found it. No, I don’t know what I’m going to do with all of this – as Lynnette Jensen always said – “I just did it! I bought it!” That’s my story and I’m stickin to it!

This is Amaryllis – pattern available for $5.00. Since it’s small and square I’m going to spiral quilt it.

These pics are from Teresa in Port Coquitlam, BC – gorgeous gardens and yard!

These were purchased by a reader at a thrift store. Isn’t that sad?

Last night Becky and I went to Thursday On Main and you k ow I look at all the dogs. Look at this little sweetie pie!

Her name is Dottie

And I ran into Sarah and Scott…..and MOE!

Moe used to stay with us when Scott and Sarah went on vacation – Hazel loved Moe. Then they moved another hour away from us and we hadn’t seen Moe for almost two years. I honestly think she may have remembered me – I want to think that anyway! Moe is such a sweet laid back dog!

She loves those pets!

Becky and I didn’t especially like the band so we left early. Next week I believe the band is the Kraft Brothers and I remember liking them last summer so even tho Becky will be pet sitting with her grand dog and grandcat, I won’t miss it.

Tomorrow morning I’m playing for a funeral and then delivering my quilts to the fairgrounds.

Pictures from Diane and Squeak

Dean cut our hay today and the dogs had the best time running in the field.

I gathered up an armful and brought to the goats for a treat.

On our way back from the field Hazel made a short detour – I’d recognize that little butt anywhere!

This squirrel was actually sleeping on the clothesline pole!

Look at this interesting tree – clumps of leaves on the trunk.

While reading about your recent fabric purchase, I thought I don’t go into the fabric store and just buy fabric without a use in mind. It is too expensive, but I do come home with a bag of fabric from quilt shows where quilters have brought in their pieces to get rid of. I haven’t been to any local show recently. So I checked today. The county next to us has a quilt show scheduled for September. Their first since before the pandemic. The show is at the local library and they always have beautiful quilts made by local quilters. Many of the quilts are ones that I could make. I had quite a haul of fabricjudy the last time I was at their quilt show. And since they haven’t had one for several years, this may be a good time to go again. Fabric, here I come!!!

Gorgeous fabric haul! Love those florals–so lush. And I have the same Tula cat fabric. The expressions are funny and oh-so-familiar. 🙂

Beth – so tell me what you’re going to make with your Tula cat fabric? Maybe I’ll just look at mine.

  3. Barbara in Columbia S.C.

Wow, it sure is hot here in Columbia, SC today. Heat index 110+. Trying to keep my new plantings watered but it is really a challenge. The only things that like this weather are my orange and keylime trees. Spent the am in the house getting ready for some overnight company coming tomorrow. Last thing I felt like doing but it made me do several things I’ve been putting off using the heat as an excuse. Finished a quilt wallhanging project for a friend, so I’ve been surfing quilt books for ideas. Slowly progressing on my Sunflower Quilt I started at the start of summer. Also been enjoying some excellent local peaches but they sure are getting expensive. $15 for a bag of 12. Planted 2 peach trees but I’ll probably be dead before they get productive.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Barbara – oh, a fresh juicy peach sounds so good! The peaches we get in the store are as hard as an apple – I don’t buy them. Ooh, that is very hot! Our high was a humid 88.

I’ll be sending a card to Sherry! Enjoyed all the photos – the gardens are beautiful and I love that large floral print. The bark on the tree with the clumps of leaves looks like an ash tree. Do you have the emerald ash borers? They have about wiped out all the ash trees in Illinois. If so, that tree might be dying and is desperately trying to hang on by putting out new foliage. We had a nice soaking rain today so I dug up some plant starts to share with a friend and of course pulled some weeks – a never-ending job.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Bonnie – yes, we have ash disease and there are lots in my grove. I’m going to look at the top of that tree and see if it looks dead. That’s pretty interesting that those clumps of leaves could be a last ditch effort to stay alive – I hadn’t thought of that. I just thought it looked odd.

Teresa your flowers are stunning, what a lovely place to sit and enjoy. Those baby bears are just to cute, but you know mama not far away. I loved seeing the dogs frolicking in the cut hay field, love the smell of fresh cut hay. What a joy. I had to check out the Steeple Quilt shop, what a great story of saving the church and giving it a new life. A work of love for their family. I will have to wander over there when I see my aunt in Mason City who is a quilter like me. We love to road trip to new shops. Its muggy here in central Wisconsin but at least the air quality is good. I need to get to some laundry today. Thanks to all who shared pictures with Mary. My card is in the mail in the morning.

I love your choice of fabrics, Mary. Now to pick a pattern. I am trying to finish some panels I have collected over the years. The bear cubs are adorable and Moe and the pup in town! It is finally cool enough for me to read on the porch with Squeak. 80*. Buddy will if the ceiling fan is on.

SCORE on the fabric!!! Another great post with lots of great pictures. That squirrel cracks me up. The bear cubs climbing up the fence made me pause. I’m glad they don’t live around here. We have coyotes and that’s creepy enough for me.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sharon – I think coyotes are the creepiest! Some nights I can hear them yipping and howling in the distance. Thank God for my fence!

Lovely pictures all around. Thanks for sharing everyone. Received 1.62 inches of rain this morning with more to come. We are having an immediate family gathering today at a community center. Expecting over 60 to come. My sister from Washington state and her 2 sons and family are going to be here.
Mary made Hot Dog Relish and Dill relish yesterday. Taking the rest of the cucumbers to share with the family. Most of them came from our neighbor as we are tending the garden while they are gone.

Mailing a card today to Sherry

    Hello,
Bear cubs in the garden, OH my!!! Teresa, your garden is beautuful!
Your Amaryllis block is so cool!
Moe looks like a great dog. Fun to catch up with friends.
And I love your fabric choices. So much fun! Will love to see what you create.
Yes, those thrift finds are a sad ending to someone’s story. One man’s treasure…I
Trying to learn how to post on Instragram. That’s what I’m trying to do this Saturday. Brought me a phone call from my grandson in Virginia!! So it was worth it! Haven’t mastered it yet.
Thank you, everybody that shares their pictures with Mary. You’re the best.

Yes those are real bear cubs. The picture that shows our tiny pond is about 4ft wide at the long side. That day mama bear decided to go into our pond and cool off. I couldn’t believe it. The bear cubs just stayed on our fence above mom. When I called out to a neighbour who was swimming in her pool mom got out of the pond and went over the fence to another neighbours yard. The cubs followed and that’s when I took that picture. I’ve had a bear drink from our pond but it’s the first time we had a bear bath. lol. Thought everyone would like to see those cute little cubs. We have always had bears in our neighborhood so have learned to live with them. We live in a subdivision but are fairly close to a forest. This bear lives in our subdivision in a small park.

    1. Kris in WI

Teresa–I’m late in commenting, but I wanted you to know that I didn’t have a 2nd thought that the bears were wooden cutouts! We see lots of cutouts of moose, deer, dragons, cowpokes, and bears around the country here. But Real Bear Cubs! And mama in the pond? Nope. Ha! You got me! We did see a bear wander through town along the bike path a few years ago. Now, THAT was interesting!
Your gardens are so lovely. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

      1. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

Thank you to everyone for the comments about my garden. It is truly a labour of love. Those cubs were so cute. This time of year when my husband leaves for work early in the morning he opens the door and has to look around before actually exiting. A few times a summer there will be a bear very close by.

Mary what a great post today! All the pics are so wonderful. The flowers especially. And I like all your new fabrics. I’m tired of using up my old fabrics but just can’t afford new. What to do I don’t know. I’m not ready to give up quilting yet. Blah blah blah.

    1. Suzanne in Massachusetts

I’m in the same boat. I spend my quilt money on batting. Fortunately my quilt friends keep me in scraps so I usually have something new to look at. I don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t quilt.

    2. Connie R.

Jean: Check out your local thrift store for quilting fabric. You’ll be surprised at the treasures you can find. I’ve found some great quilt shop quality fabrics there and the prices are very affordable.

  12. Erin

How lovely you are to keep the card ministry going! What a blessing those cards must be!

I so enjoyed all the photos! They brightened my day.

  13. Fran Dixon

Love your fabric haul! What fun!

The blog today was outstanding. I sure enjoyed the pics and conversation.

  14. Gail in Ohio

Great photos! And I think some inspiration at a quilt store is good for one’s psyche…
I finished the 3 quilt blocks in my block-of-the-month project that I hadn’t been able to get to; the next one comes out today and the plan is to do it right away – unless I can mow today after yesterday’s rain. Finishing those 3 (now I have a total of 6 done) really boosted my spirits.
I love the smell of new-mown hay – bet the goats enjoyed their treat!

  15. Kathy in western NY

Such gorgeous fabric. Nothing like having some new inspiration. It will be fun to see what you create with the big florals.
There were so many nice pictures to look at. Like I’ve said before you have the best readers who share their homes, gardens, pets and creations with us all.
I am going to a local feed store that is also a vendor barn with many crafters who sell interesting items so I like walking around the many cubbies. I remember one made cards so I will look to get some so I have different cards to send out.

She is younger than us, l used to quilt with her mum 30 years ago! Tired when l got home in bed at 7.30pm,such an old lady! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

Are those real bear cubs climbing the fence in Teresa’s yard or wooden cut outs? It’s hard to tell from the picture. Dottie is such a cute pup! Looks like you had a great time at the quilt shop. Will be fun to see what you end up making with your new purchases. And new mown hay for the goats – what a treat! I just saw the herd of goats here in our town. The city rents them to clean up along the river. They do a great job unless they escape their boundaries and end up in people’s yards!

I just made Robin Pickens’ Gathering Wildfowers quilt. I love that fabric…all wild flowers we see in Iowa! I will send a picture after I have the binding done.
