It rained in the night but I just tried to sleep thru it – when I looked at the rain gauge this morning I couldn’t believe my eyes – 3.25”!!! Everything was soaking wet – plants, rugs, golf cart with puddles everywhere.
I played for the funeral and when I got home I headed to the fairground with the quilts to hang up. As I was waiting at the building I saw big tanker trucks pulling in but I didn’t realize until I got home what they were doing.

Britt got over 5” of rain and just west of there got over 6”. Can you imagine what the fair will be like after that much water? I never go see the livestock anymore – I just can’t stand seeing them so confined and so hot – some without water in super hot buildings.
Here are the quilts hung up:

This was my favorite car at the Thursday Night car show. It’s a 1960 Porsche with only 11,000 miles on it. Guess how much it lists for???
$159,000

Don’t everybody write their checks out at the same time! Haha!
………
I’ve just finished reading a book about the world’s greatest basement. It was a best cellar.
Good Night, Everybody!
P.S. The radar shows more rain heading our way. Yikes.

Beautiful quilts that you have at the fair. Your quilts hanging on the wall reminded me of the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. I was there once. Beautiful quilts all around town. When my sister suggested going to Oregon to visit our niece and that we could go to the Outdoor quilt show. What??? How can one plan for an outdoor quilt show? As everyone is talking about all the rain we sure wouldn’t want to plan one here. I looked up Sisters and found that the average rainfall for the month of July was one tenth inch. We did go. It reminded me of going to the Indiana State Fair. Very hot and very crowded. It was a fun time. Sorry that I won’t make it to Iowa to see your quilts I person.
Wow! The fairgrounds are going to be really soggy. Your quilt display is beautiful.
I enjoyed hearing about Chunky.
Thanks, Mary
We’ve had over 4″ of rain in SW Ohio yesterday. Since I’m not at home & at the lake I’m thinking my tomatoes that are in pots in the kiddie pool may not make it until I get home. Too much water is as bad as not enough! So much for trying to keep them supplied with enough water! So glad you had help putting your pretty quilts up this year, Mary. Weather is still pretty turbulent here, tornado alerts for south of here in N KY. Will drop a card in the mail to your friend when I get home! Always happy to send cards!
Alice – your poor tomato plants! It was such a good idea to keep them watered while you were gone – guess it sorta backfired.
Your quilts are so beautiful – I’m sure the fair-goers will enjoy looking at them.
I can’t believe how much rain everyone is getting – we have cloudy skies today in north Phoenix and although it isn’t cool, it’s less hot. Think we got five drops of rain but we’re not officially in monsoon season yet.
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, everyone!
Love the quilt show. I especially love the little church wall hanging above the door. As a past 4-H mom I’m happy to say that the wast majority of the animals at our county fair were well taken care of. Each of our animals had their own fan and available food and water. Our kids showed beef and horses. Many people even put up pop up tents behind their livestock so no sun touches their animals. There are also exhibitors that have misting fans for their animals. When we walked through the rabbits this year most pens had frozen water bottles in their pens in addition to fans. I encourage you to walk through the animals the kids love to see people looking at the animals they have spent so much time with.
I’m glad to hear you had help with your quilts display. I love the blue”T” quilt. Also the chicken quilt. All are fantastic.
The petunia tree is outstanding. At a home or business?
Barbara’s bear story scares me. Amazing he’s getting all that food.
We’re getting rain all weekend. We’ve had slot of rain this spring/summer, but it’s all balancing out to be an average year they say. Haven’t had a mosquito bite. Must be outside at just the right time.
Saw the weather maps yesterday and Iowa was really getting the rain and storms. Thought about you. Out here the Hills Alive celebration Saturday and Sunday, was going strong. But we had rain both early morning and late evening, so they were able to make it. Today remains to be seen.
Jo, you don’t have to go to Michigan for a Tulip Festival. Pella, Iowa, also has a tulip festival every spring. It isn’t as big as Michigan, but the idea is there. The Pella school band marches in the wooden shoes with carefully arranged sponges. I even have a pair of the wooden shoes I can wear.
Out here we are so grateful for the rain as we have/had extreme drought conditions.
Take care everybody. Betty in Rapid City
Jo, To add to what Betty said, Orange City also have a Tulip Time. It is a couple weeks after Pella’s I believe.
Thanks…I’ll check them out.
CHUNKY THE BEAR STORY: About 3 years ago, my daughter, who lives on top of a mountain outside of Asheville, NC, noticed a yearling bear cub sitting under her birdfeeder quietly eating sunflower seeds & watching her yard. His mother had kicked him out of her care which is normal when they reach around 2 yrs. of age. He could have cared less about her dogs & vice versa. He slowly came closer to the porch steps as days went on; he didn’t come everyday but usually at the same time. My daughter finally met him on the 1st step & gave him a treat which was a cold stick of butter from her hand; not margarine but BUTTER. He always comes, sits next to her, putting his front paw on her thigh while he eats his treats. 3 years later (now) he’s still doing it. He’s about 400 -500 lbs but still acts like that baby cub. His treats now include raw eggs, butter, cookies, and he loves frosting from a can but you have to hand spoon it to him slowly as you tell him a story. He also likes to eat his bucket of sunflower seeds one at a time, spending a few hours lazing in the yard. As people sell off their property in the mountains, cookie cutter developments are ruining it for the wildlife up there. Chunky travels the mountain tops and we’re sure he stops at other people’s places based on his size. His presence keeps the coyote vicious bands from coming around. He hibernates during the winter months & I keep telling my daughter to build him a bear house cave under her deck for him to keep him safe from hunters who trespass on people’s properties to hunt. Hope you enjoy Chunky’s story !
What a wonderful story! ~~Your daughter is very brave~~
What a wonderful story. Nice to know how friendships are made. Also, that was where Helen hit last fall. Chunky must have been hunkered down when it hit. Your daughter should write children’s stories about the little bear. They would be so nice. What you wrote gives me goosebumps thinking about her and the bear. Thank you. Betty in Rapid City
Wow, the quilts, flowers, cars and water…all were incredible to see. Mary, you must be a very popular person to get your own quilt display at the fair. Our fair gives the quilts a cramped corner.
I got 1+1/3” rain last week. A mile away got .5”. I so thankful my pasture got moisture. It was getting rather crunchy.
I watched a program about tulips on PBS. How interesting. I might need to add a trip to Holland Michigan for the tulip festival on my bucket list. I’m 1/4 Dutch. Tulip petals, if organic, are edible, who knew.
Today, I will finish painting, 2nd coat, my spare bedroom. My daughter in law is coming over and doing the ladder painting and computer work. I need a teenager.
Have a great week, everyone.
I can not imagine that much rain this time of year. I am sitting here looking at the hay bales down in our pasture this morning, waiting to be picked up. That same field is often completely covered by water in winter flood times. We often laugh about having lake front property. So, if we had that kind of rain right now, there would be no hay. And, probably very puny gardens. I feel so bad for everyone going through these torential rains. Arggg Times are hard enough without that, too.
The quilts are stunning all hung up like that. Glad you had help.
Seems like heavy rain everywhere. We got 3-4 inches here in Maryland last evening. Your quilts look wonderful. Glad you had some help installing. We have someone mow our lawn. He managed to sneak in a run late Friday but it’s been hard to find a window, and the grass was up to about 8 inches. I’ve been emptying the saucers under my potted plants every day and the water just pours out of the bottom of the pot. Not sure they will all survive. I have an amaryllis blooming in the house that has gotten completely off schedule, so have been enjoying a little Christmas in July.
Karen C in MD
Karen – can I make a suggestion? Take away the saucers if the plants are outside – then they can drain consistently when you get heavy rains. Sitting in saucers of water is one of the main causes of root rot.
Good morning Mary! It is another beautiful day here with no humidity at least in the morning is the essence of summer! I am going to check my bird house in my back yard garden as ai think the tree swallows fledged yesterday. The mosquitoes however are voracious..weeds too..we had 1.8” of rain here Friday night, but nearby Marshall had 7.8”…way too much rain especially for a town with the word ‘marsh’ in it, yes widespread flooding. Right now all my Lillie’s are happily blooming which will end all too soon. Today my granddaughter and ai are going to the Lake Benton Opera House to see a play called SpongeBob SquarePants! I have a feeling it will be colossal! Next project will be completing a 21 year-old Thangles Block of the Month project, and getting it sashed and assembled ! Still suffering from a sinus infection, but getting better..able to be away for a while anyway. And. Yikes! Summer is signaling an end with county fairs coming up. I sent the photo of the Porsche to my cousin, he has at least two Porsche’s and is a very talented body man who can totally reconstruct a Porsche this was his career in Brown Deere WI. The quilts you have on display at your fair in Britt are oh so beautiful!
The three tree swallows are still in the nest-box! The House Wren crew fledged tho. There were at least three in that nestbox.
Cynthia – and this year I have several juvenile mourning doves at my feeder.
With all that rain I guess they have no alternative than to haul the water away, which was ingenious. I don’t think anyone would consider such a thing around here.
Your quilts like so pretty and cheery, very fair festive.
You would look so cute driving that Porshe! But Red is great too!!
Blessings to everyone
Linda – that Porsche is my all time favorite car! I’m not I had ever seen one in person.
We, too, have been getting rain. It is time for me to think about harvesting onions, but the plants should be dry to do that. I think I will have to harvest them “wet” when we aren’t having rain and plan on an extended drying time under the cover of the deck roof.
I finally quilted a quilt I had on the longarm machine for quite a while. It is also bound and I can say goodbye to it. I have one more throw size top to quilt and bind, but that will have to wait.
I love the flower trees. I enjoy the quilt display at the fair. The chicken quilt reminds me of one I did in folk country colors years ago. I should try it again in newer colors. So many quilts, so little time…sigh.
Vicki – I think you’ve had more rain than us! Next week when it gets really hot it will be miserable
It’s a shame you got all the rain at this time. No matter what, it ruins enjoying walking around and the displays. Love the jokes.
We received 2″ yesterday afternoon in northern Indiana and were very thankful for the rain. We haven’t had any substantial rain for several weeks, just little sprinkles that didn’t even wet the sidewalk.
are the “trees”” masses of potted flowering plants on scaffolding such as the pinsettia “trees” at Christmas time ???
I hope but doubt that you had help with the quilt displays.
Brenda – I think that’s what the petunia trees are – I did ask the reader but never heard from her. I actually did have help – the husband of the gal in charge climbed the ladder and I just directed. I was so glad for the help.
Love those gardens, spectacular
Love your quilts!! That is so much rain!! I hope there is good weather for the rest of the fair. The flowers are beautiful. I have always loved Porsche cars but $$$$. Your jokes make me smile!
I thought of you earlier this evening when a Facebook article showed the above pictures. I saw Hancock County but knew the photos were wrong as the MIL lives just a few blocks away and I had never seen those trees before! I read a bit farther and saw it was Britt, Hancock County, Iowa not Carthage, Hancock County, Illinois. Seems like fair week is either hot and dry or hot and wet no matter where you are. I figured you probably got lots of rain. I will have to check with my friend west of Britt to see how much they did get. We only got an inch but supposed to get 2″ tonight. Lots of flash flood warnings in this area (Quad Cities) but where we’re at on the Illinois side, we could use the rain as so much of it has hit us.
Are those “trees” made of petunia plants? I’ve never seen anything like that before.
You have such a variety of quilts, I do recognize one of them.
DebMac – yes, fair time is usually hot and sticky and I think it will be that way next week here in North Iowa. Those poor animals.
Thank you Mary, your bed time jokes bring a smile.
