Catching Up, 5-4-25

I have photos to post and don’t want to get behind. Great photos – thanks for sending!

From Rose

These are 3” blocks – 2 measurements – 3- 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 and 2 – 1-1/2 x 3-1/2
A great leader-ender project

FYI – do you know what a connector square is?

If you see this symbol in any of our patterns, it stands for a connector square explained above. You might know it as something else but we call them connector squares.

This 4-1/2” square has 4 2-1/2” connector squares resulting in triangles.

I picked Hank up after church – here he is when he finally realized who was walking up to his kennel.

He has a great time here – Keeper drops out of play before Hank.

The view from my favorite chair – soon I’ll be able to walk thru that door ahead into the porch.

Both pics from Rose!

I’m caught up but always welcome more photos!

Thanks to those who plan on sending a card to Ina!

I dropped a card in the mail to Ina yesterday 🙂 Thank you for the opportunity to brighten her day!

The quilts are just beautiful, and thank you for the connector square lesson.
Hank is so cute and lucky to have friends like you and Keeper.
    Thanks, Mary

Lovely quilts today! I had a yard sale on Saturday and put out about eighteen bins of fabric which had taken me weeks to cull from my very large stash. I didn’t make a lot of money because I was selling it so cheaply but I only brought back inside nine bins at the end of the sale so I considered that a success. I had people fill up plastic grocery bags as full as they could for $15 or a gallon bag for $5. You can really stuff a lot in there especially if you don’t have to zip the gallon bag closed.
Tomorrow we take the train into downtown Philadelphia to the hospital where I will get my quarterly shots for my eyes. I get five Botox shots around each eye and two on each eyelid for a neurological condition called Benign Essential Blepharospasm which, without treatment, causes the eyes to clench shut and blink uncontrollably. With treatment, I live a normal life. It is rather rare and was difficult to get diagnosed. I went to a few specialists and it was actually my husband who finally diagnosed me after a year and a half.

Sue – I can’t imagine having shots in my eye!!!! And your husband figured out what was wrong? He must have researched online? I think you had a great solution on selling the fabric. I should take note so I’ll know how to do it when the time comes. And it will come.

Yes, I was having a “bad eye day” and was almost in tears when my husband called me at work. When we hung up, he prayed for wisdom and guidance and then went online, which he had done before, but this time he was led to the Benign Essential Blepharospasm Research Foundation website which had a video of a person with exactly the same symptoms as me. He called me back and told me to watch the video which I did and I immediately said “That’s me!”. After that we were able to move forward to treatment.

I mailed Ina a card this morning. It sounds like she is in a good place. And a daughter nearby.
Can’t get over the 3 inch rainbow quilt. Very beautiful. What a lot of work!!
And the Bulleyes are original, too!I
Rose’s pictures of Hazel are too cute!
This auto-correct on my tablet drives me crazy!
I’m so messed up, I thought Mother’s Day was yesterday!

    Mary,
I forgot to ask you if you checked your HyVee for some Gatorade with Caitlin Clark’s picture on it. I saw it at our HyVee, and they had loads of it here. Wasn’t it fun to watch her play in the basketball game yesterday? That 36′ three pointer was something else! I think her teammates have accepted her well, too. It was so exciting!

Jeanine – I haven’t been to HyVee except pharmacy very quickly.

I went to Bible study this morning and after I got home I planted 12 tomato plants and some rose moss in my planters on the deck. I just love having some of them every year. My husband had help this morning planting the rest of the row and hill garden. I don’t enjoy doing that so much anymore, but I told him I would do the tomatoes. He thinks he needs the garden to give him something to do in the summer (hoeing), but I do most of the harvesting. And then we have too much so take it to church. The church people love that!

Enjoyed all the pictures again today. I’m going to the sewing room now to finish sewing on a binding and then will see what other mischief I can do in there. I also need put a quilt on the long arm and get it quilted before Thursday. Never a dull moment around here!

Just had to let you know how amazingly delicious and easy your rhubarb custard cake is!! My husband loves it too – even without ice cream (didn’t have any at the time). My sister-in-law grows rhubarb so I have a steady supply. Looking forward to having more later. The recipe is a definite keeper.

Tina – so glad you liked it. I guess the smaller box was no issue – just made the cake part more soggy which is the point of the “cake”, I think.

I replied to the other one then forgot to say I will definitely send a card to Ina.

Beautiful quilty eye candy today! Thanks to everyone for sharing.
I’m not familiar with the term connector square, although I have used that method a lot. Live and learn.
I was on a trip last week, so still in catch up mode at home. Hope to get to the sewing machine this afternoon. It went in for cleaning and service while I was away, so it should be ready to get to work too.

    Hi Mary
I love the string quilt, the 4 w rectangles
    Beautiful!!!
The quilt on the couch with the beautiful kitty is a joy to see!!! Makes my day!!!!
Canoli bit me yesterday, out of nowhere!😳

Eunice is a sweetheart of course. Casey has no patience with either one of them🤣🤣🤣

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Bea – well, that naughty little Canoli! Casey needs to be in charge like Hazel.

Wow. A great quilt show. Hank looked like he was smiling while sitting in the front seat.
Did a little gardening yesterday and it was too much. While I was staying at my son’s place looking after all their animals I sprained my mcl. They have a lot of stairs and I think that’s how it happened. It’s been about 5 weeks since I’ve been home and going to physical therapy. Small improvement but a long way to go. It’s been tough still recovering from my knee replacement and now the other leg in so much pain. I’m very frustrated because I was doing so well with recovering from knee replacement and now that is my strong leg. Dr said it was too soon to be used as the strong leg. Can’t wait till the mcl is better.
The weather has been so beautiful this past week and another sunny spring day today.
My son and granddaughter came for a visit for a week, my daughter in law had to work so flew up on Thursday. I had a wonderful visit with all of them. My granddaughter is two and right now I’m her favourite person. So sweet. My husband who is 65 and our son, 35, went in a 10km Spartan race in Seattle Saturday. His words – well I did a 10km race for the first and last time and survived- he is very sore. We watched and I was on my feet way too long. But how often do you get to see a father and son in a race together. That was my weekend. Now I will use this week to recover while sewing.
    Happy spring everyone.

Teresa – oh, your poor knee and your poor “good” leg – yup, I prescribe a restful week at the sewing machine!

A wonderful, bright collection of quilts again today. You all sure have an eye for fabulous colors. It’s so nice to get up in the morning and tune into this great show.
Some planting was in my schedule over the weekend but I found out it’s better to plant about three things and then go sit down for a bit. It looks like I will have trim down my little garden so I can at least keep some color going in the back yard.
Mary, has your car been ‘de-skunked’ yet? That sounds like a monumental job.
    Have a good day everyone.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Janet – my van is getting better and I will have it detailed in a couple weeks. When Keeper gets wet he is still very skunky. We all feel the same – getting too old to work outside all day! And I, for one, hate it!

Sooo pretty quilts! Love the 3” bright colors quilt and colorful wedge! Someone has a wonderful fabric stash and eye for color! Sweet, sweet Hank🥰!
