Cleaning the Barn, 6-17-26

Whew! A good job well done by Josh, Sarah, Don, Rick and me. I got up early and moved Dottie and Sarah and the 19 chicks to the opposite side of the barn where they had a ball! Something new – they didn’t even want to go back. I figured out one really great way to feed the chicks – my little pen that I’ve always used as the infirmary is now their feeding station with a gate across the door that only THEY can fit thru – Dottie and Sarah can’t get in there. Almost brilliant – haha!!!

Clean!
Look at this beautiful walnut branch! Or is it just me?
And all of these dead ash trees in my house yard!! ugh

More quilts

Vicki is on vacation on Vashon Island

Thanks, Everybody, for these great quilt shows! I can stay at home and view these wonderful quilts that you all have made. What did I sew today? Absolutely nothing! But I have a clean barn and happy animals.

FYI – I always google Mary’s blog, and I haven’t had any problems seeing it. As well, Mary’s comments from today showed up as usual. If there’s an issue, it’s not showing up on my end. Technology!?!!!

I tried to sign back up for emails but that didn’t work. Does anyone have a way to get her emails again? Thanks

Yes, Cynthia, thanks for letting us know Mary is fine. I haven’t received the blog in days and, it won’t let me re-subscribe. One day last week the email appeared in a different form and, ever since, I am not able to receive the blog email. Hope this gets resolved soon. Computer problems are so frustrating!!!

What a great post and comments today! I agree the barn looks fantastic and the quilts are so inspiring. In fact, the yo-yo flag is the second one I have seen recently and now I just have to make one!! I remember making yo-yos when i was a young firl. I made a tring of the to hold back the curtains in my bedroom. So, I have now gone off on yet another tangent….Yo-Yo flag.!!!

What a clean barn and I bet the animals loved the adventure into their new zone. So many wonderful quilts and patriotic features today on the blog, lovely to see.

A clean barn and a lovely quilt show. Beautiful pets too.
My kids sent me a video of Kira, my blind granddog, crawling. How they teach her so much, I don’t know. Life is an adventure.

Jo – don’t you think Kira’s other senses are heightened? I continue to be grateful to your kids formtaking on this challenge!

Keeper and Friend at your beautiful farm. Love these pictures, Mary! Clever with the private chicken eating area too!

The first two pictures knocked off two DD quilts for this year. The first was inspired by one of you last year when you’d sent in a picture of colorful flowers on your porch. Your comment was that it would make a great quilt with a splash of color. “Ah,” I thought to myself. I know just the material and scraps I could use. Okay, so it’s a year later. The geranium material I’ve had almost 30 years. It so reminded me of my Mom who had a wonderful garden of geraniums that thrived, even in the desert heat. So, it’s called Mom’s Geraniums. The second picture of the patriotic teddy bears was material gifted to me a few years back. Once the quilt was done there were four squares left over – can’t waste those. Hence, the pillow.
Okay, i ordered a Yellow Brick Road and two other patterns from Atkinson Designs. Enjoyed seeing the variety of possibilities over the last couple of days on Mary’s blog. I’m sure I can create one from my stash. Maybe on next year’s Dirty Dozen list. 🙂

Seems like the quilt shows get better and better. And, while I am sitting here enjoying it, I can hear my sewing machine crying out to me. Where are you? Haven’t seen you for a while. You need me. HaHa Yes, I do but the weather has been so grand lately. Maybe today.
I love the photo of Keeper and the hen.
It will be wonderful to step into a clean barn today. You will be smiling, I bet.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sue – the smell of fresh pine bedding was so nice this morning – ahhh! What a great start to the day – here, too, so my sewing machine will have to sit. I agree – the quilt shows are been motivation to get up and see them every morning!

What a good feeling when the barn is clean. Better than having my house clean!
The quilts have been so wonderful! You, Mary, and everyone on here give me so much incentive for doing!!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Margie – I said the exact same words to Becky last night and this morning was a delight to walk into a clean barn! Saw your carton of eggs – did you notice one was broken? I wonder what I’ll do this fall when I have 19 new hens laying!!!!!

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Margie – gosh, I hope I didn’t speak out of line – maybe I was wrong but it was in the front row, second in front on the right, I think. I am so used to looking at mine!!!!

  11. Gail in Ohio

That was a full day’s work – but the results are worth it.
Great quilt show – I so enjoy the photos!!!

Mary, I think the walnut branch (and tree) are beautiful. My grandmother had a walnut tree in her side yard that was right outside her kitchen window. Such great memories that brings back!

Also, the barn looks great. Too bad it can’t stay looking so neat!

Great quilt show. How wonderful to have all that help to clean the barn. So satisfying to have it clean. We did a lot of cleanup today. We removed the pile of old drywall that was left here. So happy it is gone. We still need to take a load of metal to the recycling depot and then the area will be really cleaned up. I was able to weed the veggie garden which didn’t take more than an hour with all the raised beds we have. Watered the veggies, blueberries and fruit trees. Then my hubby and I re-stringed our cantilever umbrella. We were afraid the frayed string would break any time. I previously ordered a new canopy for it and it’s like new now. We also fixed the part that had fallen down which caused the string to fray. Great day with so many jobs accomplished. Have a wonderful day everyone.

What lovely trees you have! That is what I miss the most about the Midwest. Trees don’t grow well out here on the high desert. I’m sure your chickens and goats are enjoying their clean digs tonight. I enjoyed the quilt show. Thanks Mary for organizing and presenting it.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Martha- sadly I’m going to lose lots of them to the ash disease – trees that were planted here 100 years ago!

  15. Lindah in northern CA

Ha! The hen and the pup seem to be admiring the day’s hard work. Soon they will be snoring away in clean digs. 🙂 It is great that you have help to do all that barn cleaning. Yi, it makes me tired just thinking about it.
Lovely quilts and so much variety. The tall, tall tapers gave me a chuckle.
The walnut branch surely does have a character all its own. Bet it could tell some good stories. Is it still leafing out? I can’t see whether there are leaves at the tip end.
Have a good sleep. Take good care of the leg.
