Cold, 1-23-26

I’m getting pretty sick of talking and hearing about the cold weather but here we go. Every bucket in the interior of the barn which is heated was frozen this morning! I’ve never seen that before. I put down more bedding to keep it warmer for everybody.

I am loving all the comments about singing to your pets! Ha! And I thought it was just me – nope! I love Wanda’s words to Jesus Loves the Little Children (kitties) – I’m going to start singing that, too. And the Beagle Boy! Love it!!!!

Writing this at noon – heading to the sewing room.

It was a productive afternoon – I finished #12. Will press and take a picture tomorrow. Whew, I’ve been working on it since December.

Hope you’re all tucked into your warm houses tonight and please God, keep the power on.

Barbara, I really like your quilt. But I see why you stopped making the star blocks. They are a lot of work. It will be a great donation quilt that is for sure.

Just a reminder for those not use to this extreme weather. If you have water pipes on the outside walls, open the door to them so they don’t freeze.
I planned to participate in Support Your Local Quilt Shop Day today, but it was just too cold to venture out. Maybe next week…like I need more fabric!!! 😵‍💫, but it’s fun to visit with the owners and see new designs.
Quilt blocks on YouTube keeps me up way past normal bedtime.

I’m happy to be on the side of the country that’s not affected by the bitter cold and winter storm. I hope Mary and all her readers stay safe and warm, and the power stays on!

Pretty quilts and other DD projects today. Barbara’s tiny little stars are impressive, so small and so many of them. Nice job!

Oh, my! How cold it must be! I’m in balmy Oregon, where it practically never goes far below freezing. I surely remember my Illinois days with ice storms and blizzards. I actually miss those a little bit, being a homebody, anyway. But it sure is rough having no power. I hope your critters stay warm. You, too!

That quilt top with the tiny blocks is fabulous!

We discovered that my conure (small parrot) loves the song Bushel And A Peck by Doris Day when it was used in a commercial a while back. When I sing it to her she bobs her head and makes happy purr sounds. 💕🦜

Noel – oh, that is priceless!! Who knew pets liked songs? I love it – send me a picture of your bird.

We had a real “chow hound” cat that was always ready to eat. I used to sing “Looking for food in all the wrong places” ( as opposed to Looking for Love) to her as she was hot on my heels everytime I went out to the kitchen!
Love seeing the DD quilts posted. One of my DD ‘s is a broken dishes quilt. It has a different layout than the one pictured today. I have loved making them and think I will keep going to make a 2nd one as shown. The blue background really sets it off! Love it. Love all of Bonnie’s pillowcases. Barbara’s quilt looks like a quilt designed by Jo of Jo’s Country Junction. Very nice!
We are in the 12″-18″ expected snow band where we live in NH. (On the edge of the 18’-24″ but I’m not thinking about that!). It is supposed to be light and fluffly so fingers crossed that we don’t lose power. I have my DD to finish!!!! As always, Thank you for the blog Mary.

Ginger – let us know how the storm affected you when all is over. Looking for food! What a great adaptation! I think I’ll start singing it to Mortie who jumps to the counter whenever I go close. Ha!

    2. Barbara (in MO)

Yes, Ginger my quilt is the one designed by Jo. I had all those 256 stars cut out but I wimped out and only sewed 64, I think, so now its a kid’s size quilt. Will be donated to our Quilts for Kids.

    Hi Mary,
It broke my heart to hear the barn water was frozen, I hope the chickies are ok 🙏🏻
I even in south Florida put heat on for my Guinea pigs, my husband laughs
We do get a cold front every now and again.
I have not sung to my animals but I talk to them like they are people😁
Keep warm, God bless you and all your readers!

Enjoyed all the cat pix, those posed on the shelf was very clever. The big quilt laying on a floor looked as if the blocks were very small, maybe 4″? What a challenge!
Hubby & I were on oposite sides of the house about 9 am yesterday, and we both heard a big bang in between us. Got to the kitchen to find the triple-pane window above the sink cracked all the way across! Thank goodness for lifetime warranty, had all windows replaced in 2014. Called local installer, told us to take pix of the label and the crack, and they will get right on it. At least it was the inside layer, should hold up until fixed.
Glad to know the cortisone is helping somewhat, Mary. Wish you well with the multiple problems.

      1. RS in N Ia

I assume it was the contrast of extreme cold on one side and extra warm inside that caused the crack. The contractor was not at all surprised, so it must happen every so often.

-2 this morning with a skiff of snow. Home from retreat for 2 days. Plan a little time in the sewing room today. The quilts were beautiful this morning.

Love that weather map! I always tell everyone that when it gets colder we just throw another quilt on the bed. Please stay safe in your trips to the barn & baby those shoulders. You take wonderful care of all of your animals & even ones that just stop by. I downloaded 2 books to my Kindle & I’ll get it charged in case we lose power. I have 90 blocks ready to be sewn into a top so I hope the power stays on. Reading all the comments is a great way to start my day.

  11. Joy in NWIowa

You are tired of hearing about the cold, but yesterday after every doctor visit or at the grocery store…the comment was ‘stay warm’!
I’m so proud of Bonnie!! All those beautiful pillowcases!! Wow! Some charity or grandchild will be thrilled. I should make some new ones for the grandkids to surprise them On their next visit! It’s not until April so I have time, but I sure would like to see them sooner!
All the quilts are so pretty!
I’m not planning on going anywhere today!! Ups….no weather talk!😂
Yesterday, I bought some strawberries with the ‘from Plant City FL’ on the label! They are amazing! Look for them in the stores! I could smell them in the car all the way home. They will be on my plate for breakfast!
107* degrees in Australia….hope you stay safe!
To the lady that bought the generator…..that’s good insurance! Be thankful you haven’t had to use it!

This was a delightful post to read this morning with hot coffee in hand. I just want the power to stay on for everyone. It read 0 on our thermometer but with wind chili it’s way below. Our favorite weather person showed wine bottles on his US map in place of quilts. I’ll take keeping my furnace on and know next months bill will reflect I don’t want to be cold.
Bonnie I applaud you for the 16 pillowcases! They are so fun to make and we are involved with Sleep in Heavenly peace so I too make them. The builds for making the beds are so much fun. I saved a photo of Barbs cool star quilt. Loved it.
Yesterdays comments were one of the best to read. How cute to know so many sing various songs to our beloved pets. And Wanda for her kitty compassion. You are all good good people.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Kathy – I agree! I’m enjoying hearing from readers this morning while I drink my coffee.

    2. Jo in cold Wyoming

Kathy…I’m making pillowcases cases for Sleep in Heavenly Peace too.
I’ll send those with mattress pads to the fellows making the beds.

  13. Vicki in Iowa City

My sons live in Houston. On Thursday, I suggested to the youngest one (not always known for planning) that he stock up on groceries, bottled water, gas in his car and gas for the generator. Imagine my surprise when he said he had already all those. I also suggested he stay off the road on Sunday. Houstonians really are not accustomed to driving on ice, and the number of drivers going way too fast is amazing.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Vicki – I remember how fast drivers in Houston went during good weather! Your little boy seems to have grown up!!

  14. Lynette in Orlando

Seeing the weather I am praying for everyone living in this frigid storm. This is horrible. Praying for everyone. I not only sing but the dog and I dance! She’s not a big fan of that and barks more than dances…… lol. We also have wonderful conversations Ha.

I’ve been still engrossed in cross stitch projects. Right now it’s a biggie — have you seen the picture of the guardian angel walking the 2 girls across the bridge? My grandmother had that above her bed as long as I can remember. I found it in a cross stitch pattern and have been working on that. Will take me months, but it’s bringing back such wonderful memories of my grandmother.

Love your quilts!!!! And Mary, that quilt forecast is spot on!!!!

Please stay warm and safe everyone. I’m praying for all those pups that have to go out in that bitter cold to go potty. Poor babies!!

  15. Diana in Des Moines

Hate to say this, but would much rather have the cold and not the snow.
We installed a whole house generator last summer, but wouldn’t you know we have not needed to use it.
So glad I can stay in till Sunday. I’ve missed the last 2 Sundays being sick, but coughing so much less today, I think we can go this week.
Quiet day at home with the grandkids. We watched Peter Rabbit 1 and 2, made cookies, had a tea party and lots of drawing and coloring. Not a bad day!
Staying in the sewing room tomorrow and only coming out for food and Pepsi!!
    Stay warm and dry everyone!

    1. Vicki in Iowa City

Love your “staying in the sewing room tomorrow and only coming out for food and Pepsi”. Days like that are wonderful for our creativity and our souls. Have fun!

  16. Jay in SW Ohio

I believe we’re having a 4+ quilt night. We don’t usually get this cold or the amount of snow that’s predicted: 9-12″! I’m looking forward to several days of happy sewing and great comfort food. As long as the power stays on.

  17. Sara in Indiana

Loved all the comments yesterday about singing to pets—so sweet! Those cross stitch finds were pretty, too, and Pamela’s husband’s quilt is impressive. Like everyone else, we’re hoping the electricity stays on the next few days. We are ‘lucky’ that we’re getting snow and not ice. Glad we don’t have to go anywhere and can stay home and hibernate under a pile of quilts and watch TV—ha!

  18. Chris in Alaska

Hi everyone it’s been a long time since I’ve been able to comment! Hello from Alaska 🙂 Loving all your quilts !

Chris!!!! Where have you been???? I was worried – several people saw the Hazel pillow and I was determined to get ahold of you but somehow didn’t have your email. Tell me what’s happened – use my email if you prefer – I am sooo glad to hear from you!!!
