Cold Temps To Return, 4-16-26

Tomorrow night we’re going down to freezing again with a chance for snow!!! Better make sure my chicks are very protected from any breezes.

Maybe I’ve mentioned that Three hates Barney. Just look at this scene!

Can’t you just imagine Three pouncing on Barney?

Mollie spent the night and today when I wanted her to go to the trail, she went back in the house!! Haha! No wonder she’s so fat – lazy, too. But sweet and I love her. Bob said he’s already gotten some cards – I asked him and he said he’d gotten several – one from CA and he doesn’t know anybody in CA! Haha!!!! Thank you.

Went to Walmart today – struggled to check out two huge bags of cat food and in doing so forgot my small bag with toothpaste on the counter. Sigh.

Nancy and Kathy came to sew tonight – always fun! They wanted to see the chicks so we went to the barn, too. They’re both farm girls and Nancy would like to get chickens when her grandkids are a bit older.

I love #10 Farmhouse stars. I screenshotted it and can’t probably work out a pattern. It would be much easier to buy one for $5.00 from you! Is it available for purchase?

    Mary,

Wow, what a great Quilt show today. Each and everyone is beautiful. Well done everyone! And I loved your calendar Quilt. The octagonal table topper is so nice also. Beautiful fall decoration. Also love the log cabin quilt on yesterday‘s post.

The chicks looked to be getting along. They’ll be protected and safe in the barn. Condolences to Ollie‘s owner. What a long life for Ollie.

Carol, I also send prayers for Elio. Amazing what can be done medically these days so keep your faith and please keep Mary and us informed. We all care.
    Have a nice weekend everyone!🌻

    Hi, Mary and Readers,
Earlier this week I posted about our first grandchild, born on Tuesday, the 13th. Yesterday we found out that little Elio has hearing loss of an indeterminate amount. He sees an audiologist next week. While it’s not the end of the world, it’s not cancer or so many awful things that life can throw at all of us, we are very sad to think he may never hear birds sing or music played. I’m heart-broken.
I would truly appreciate your strongest prayers that we get some kind of good news next week. The question is: does he have any structures needed to perceive sound? That can’t be seen by the doctors at this point because where his ear canals are supposed to be, there is skin, no holes. I’m not sure how they determine what’s behind that, I’m not sure if surgery is required, I’m not sure if he’ll ever have any hearing. Please pray that the outcome is better than where my brain is traveling these long days. I appreciate it.

Carol – OH NO! Little ELIO? Yes, it’s not cancer or something equally life threatening, but it’s sad that he’ll be facing surgery, dr appointments and many challenges. God must have something special planned for little ELIO. Sigh. I am sorry, Carol – please keep me updated on his condition.

Thank you, Mary. Our son is artistic, designs board games and calendar art and so on. My husband said yesterday, “When one sense isn’t working, the others step up. Maybe he’ll be incredibly artistic.” I guess that’s making him feel better, but he’s a musician and the thought of Elio not hearing his or any music is hard on him. He’s been making CDs and thumb drives of his songs with the idea that, as older grandparents, our grandchildren will remember us through his voice/music, and my quilts.
Well, I’ll have to trust in the plan and remain hopeful. Thanks to everyone weighing in, I’m hoping to not miss anyone’s prayers and thoughts and wishes.

Carol, Praying already for Elio and, will continue to pray for good news for him and your family.

Carol, Will say a Rosary for little Elio tonight. Remember, if he needs surgery to assist with his hearing development they are doing amazing things with excellent results. Take a deep breath and live one day at a time.

Thank you so much, perhaps Mary will intercede in Elio’s best interests. Praying mightily for that.

HI Carol, Here is a little booster for you. Our friends’ daughter was born with total hearing loss. She and her mom went to the Alexander Graham Bell school in Pennsylvania each summer for a few times. She learned to read lips and in her 30’s had a Cochlear implant on each side. She is now 49 She is married to a Dr. who also had hearing loss, they have two daughters who are hearing, AND, she has her BA, MA, and PHD in Psychology. She has her own practice in New York State. I know Elio’s diagnosis sounds so devastating, but they can do amazing things. Hang in there.

      1. Carol at Pin Oak Quilting

Thanks for that boost! The family is in Pennsylvania, I will pass on the information about the school/summer programming at the Alexander Bell school.
I’m organized, a former teacher and professor, and am good at research. I’ve spent the last few days looking for ASL classes in my own area, not much luck yet. Our son has been wanting us to move nearer to them (Pittsburgh); perhaps it’s a good call, we should consider it. He’s digging into resources too. This might be our push, and could be nice to see more of the baby.

Diane – what wonderful encouragement! Thank you – once again I learned from my readers.

Carol, praying for little Elio. It really is amazing what doctor’s can do with surgery/technology now! Hoping the tests show his hearing can be restored. Please keep us updated as you get more information. I will pray for comfort for you, too Carol.

Carol, I was heartbroken to read about Elio, your first grandchild and his medical condition. To think of all that he will possible miss out on, hearing your voice, birds, a kittens purr. My prayers are with you and your family that the doctors can solve his condition and bring him back his hearing. We are with you in prayer.

      1. Carol at Pin Oak Quilting

Thank you. Kittens, puppies, playmates, bird song… all of it, it just hurts to think of him in a bassinet not having any cues except his own hunger or body temp or wetness. I’m incredibly sad. Prayers are so welcome.

Hi Mary, we are having some heavy rain over the weekend, so my sump is working overtime to keep water out of my granny flat, l am grateful as it not nice to have damp carpet! Lots of hand quilting l think, working on 5 sets of blocks from a member of the quilt guild that passed away to be donated to sweet Louise breast cancer charity. Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

Once again, thank you Mary for keeping the blog alive and thanks to all the folks who send in pictures. It always makes my day…and sometimes night. I really liked the setting of the “Busy Kittens” quilt. I’ll have to remember that. I have some children’s prints that even just cut into squares would be nice for LWR quilts.
76* here and the wind is howling. We are in the tornado watch area, but I’m prepared. Flashlight, checkbook, cash, meds, assorted ID’s and soda packed and ready to head to the basement. I suppose I could clean if I have to go down there. Mmm, nope. I’ll take a book. Yesterday I grabbed crackers and peanut butter when the storm siren, weather radio, phone, radio, and TV all gave the tornado warning at the same time! I don’t think I could have slept through all that if I tried!
Hmm, the weather radio just gave a tornado warning for the counties SW of us. I’d better pay attention. Stay weather aware, everyone! Kris in WI.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Kris – boy, our weather is reporting horribly bad weather for your area! Stay safe – sounds like you’re prepared but hope you don’t have to use it.

  6. Judy AZ also

Just had breakfast – a beautiful orange and banana all cut up – now a welcome message and pictures of those rascally kitties! Brave the cold weather there. We never got an actual Winter here this year, so Spring is here and fire season looming – mixed blessings for sure.

Enjoyed the eye candy this morning.

High winds and 70 already but expecting 50s this afternoon. Very windy right now which will make it fun driving into the city. Maybe in May the weather (cold) will finally be more stable.

Need sew (machine sewing) time but not happening today.

  8. Bernadette in NE Iowa

All the quilts are great eye candy. I have noticed the red light in with the chicks. I remember us having chicks when I was young and on the farm. It was fun to see them grow. If my memory serves me correctly, isn’t the red light so the chicks don’t peck each other and see blood? Yesterday was an ideal beautiful day, got part of my south flowerbed raked off and dug out the weeds around our young peach tree. Today won’t be so nice with the storm expected this afternoon and colder temps in the evenings for this weekend. Hope the plants survive the weekend.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Bernadette – yes, the red heat bulb is supposed to be better for them. Makes sense to me that it keeps them from pecking each other.

  9. Sheryl Harrison

The Kindness Matters sign in the picture with Three and Barney adds to the story. Maybe Three will learn to follow that advice.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sheryl – haha! I didn’t even realize since the sign is always there – sweet! Hahaha!!!

    2. Ginger S in New Hampshire

Sheryl, I noticed that too and got a kick out of it. Seemed like a good reminder to the cats. Ha Ha.

Those little chicks will be nice & warm under that heat lamp. Hazel looks like she is keeping an eye on the situation. All the quilts are so pretty today especially the Farmhouse Stars which looks like a Kim Diehl pattern. Mary, your Calendar quilt is a stunner. I am impressed with the amount of precision piecing the quilt requires. At least Three & Barney look like are observing a truce. Last night we finally got some much needed rain after a long hot dry spell. All the farmers here are worried about planting season due to the lack of spring rainfall.
