Riverside, 4-17-26

A reader requested I make Riverside available so here it is. Send $5.00 cash or check and a SASE with one stamp to Mary Etherington, 2345 Palm Ave, Garner, IA 50438.

No color picture will be included in your $5 pattern so tag this picture or better yet, print it out.

Mollie is back for a few days while all the family arrives for Bob’s birthday. Once she understands our routine, she begins to know what she’s supposed to do.

I really closed the barn up tight tonight because of the cold temps by morning so no cold wind gets to the chicks.

Reader quilts

I’ve got a little pattern for you – a mug rug for your ladies at church. It’s a tribute to the cross and the 250th anniversary of our nation. Nancy and Kathy made over 20 of these for their honored guests who are age 80 and over.

As you can see this is a very casual pattern. Good grief – that small piece measurement is 1-3/4 x 1-14. I didn’t notice I hadn’t traced over it until now. The 6” cross block was layered with batting and backing and turned with topstitching all around the edge. I think their honored guests at Women’s Fellowship will be pleased with their gift.

Look at my beautiful fiddle leaf fig! It has been so thick and lush for several years! What happened? Anybody have any experience? I can’t think of one single thing I changed in its care. Makes me sad to lose it. And no pests that I can see.

Did you all read Carol’s comment about the new baby in their family named ELIO? It’s very sad – he’s got some issues with his ears and will likely have surgery when they know more. Prayers for little ELIO.

A chilly good night!

Thanks for the little cross pattern! I will have to get busy on some of those!

I did not send Bob a card, but thought about him all week. We had a stitching church friend who turns 90, too. I took a cake and card Thursday and our group sang Happy Birthday to her. I added his name to my uplifted song. 90 years is worth celebrating!!

Thinking of Elio and sending prayers his way, too.

Tanya – I don’t understand why you made a point of telling me you didn’t send Bob a card – I can’t imagine what your reasoning can be. If you didn’t want to send a card you could have remained silent and I would never have known. Now I’m flabbergasted.

Many prayers for Elio with love for all the family. All the quilting things are wonderful.
You are so good to take care of Mollie. Unfortunately I have no useful info about your fig plant, as I have no green thumb, even though I try. I have killed so many plants, but I love them so much. I have a friend who has so many beautiful, healthy plants that it is amazing. I will ask him if he has any experience with fig plants.

I will be praying for little Elio.
And please pray for my grandkids’ step sister’s baby as he was born with a neuro-muscular disease that is fatal. Life expectancy is only 2 years. He has gotten an infusion that can possibly extend his life to maybe 10 y/o age. She brought him by a few weeks ago and he acts so normal right now but as he ages then the symptoms start appearing.
    Thank you
    Carolyn

Carolyn – I am so sorry to hear this – maybe modern medicine will extend his life!!!

  4. Judy AZ also

Maybe a bigger pot, new soil? I’ve not had one of these beautiful fiddle leaf figs. The leaves look healthy, tho’, and I think they are long-lived plants. Hmmm – always a challenge! Thanks Mary.

Thanks for all the info today and photos – prayers for Elio.
The mug rugs are very cute – thanks for the pattern!
Sorry about your fig plant – I swear plants sometimes just outsmart us. My hoyas developed a bunch of yellow leaves a few weeks ago and I racked my brain trying to figure out why – I knew it wasn’t a water or light issue. I finally figured out that they must have reacted to the cooler temps in the room when my furnace quit – evidently my alternative heat didn’t get into their room as well and they didn’t like it…

The mug rugs are a perfect gift for those that attend. I cant imagine sewing that many! Bravo ladies. It was 69 here yesterday and a gorgeous day to be outside working in our yard. We took our daughter dog for a 3 mile walk down to the river. We have lots of flooding in the towns around us, the rivers are truly high and adding over 8 inches of water to homes, downtowns businesses and just making a mess. The rain doesn’t end, and tonight we get hail, torrential rain, and tornadoes are possible. They say it will be 30 on Saturday and possible snow! what crazy weather. Mary, I know Iowa was turning cold so it nice to know the hens and chicks will be warm in the barn.

        Carol,
Diane here again. Our grand daughter in Gahanna, Ohio took ASL as her “foreign” language in HS. Would there be a possibility of ASL in one of the high schools near you? She really learned it very well and can still do it 6 years later. Just a thought. Praying for Elio and all of you:)

I don’t see any frost but it’s 30 here this morning. I am up earlier than normal as I have someone coming at 10:00 to give me quote on a walk-in shower installation. NO WIND this morning! Awful yesterday. Hard to open a car door from inside and get out without amputating a leg.

    Hope your chicks are ok.

Elio has been on my mind since his birth so I appreciate Carol finding time to inform us of his recent diagnosis. He’s so little to go through surgery and my prayers for him. We are a good support team here and appreciate her updates on him. Families with hearing loss know the struggles but medicine has made so many advances as Diane spoke of so it’s encouraging. Our little country church has an ASL interpreter because in our area we are home to one of the largest hearing loss populations in the country.
Thank you to your sewing friends for the mug rug idea and measurements. It is a nice gift. Thanks to all who share their creations here.
I sent Bob a birthday card and after I slid it into the PO Box, I realized I forgot to put the zip code for Garner on as I hadn’t written it down from the original post. I’m waiting for it to be returned to me that address was insufficient. Maybe someone will be kind and go the extra step and catch my mistake. S
Stay safe everyone with this spring weather up and down.

    1. Carol at Pin Oak Quilting

Thank you Kathy. Where in Western New York are you? I’m looking into resources. We want to take ASL classes if necessary.

      1. Kathy in western NY

Carol, I am in Spencerport, suburb west of Rochester. Look at Rochester School of the Deaf in Rochester as they have ASL classes for families. Our interrupter at church works for them.

I went back and read Carol’s update about her newborn grandson Elio. Adding him to the prayer list. Thank you for the mug rug cross pattern. Cute stitch and sit pincushion. What a great idea! I love the colors of the charity quilt. I hope Bob has a wonderful birthday weekend celebrating!

It has had a whole line of grow lights 12-14 hours a day since last fall and I had a moisture meter that I use every time I water. In pot several years with added and amended soil periodically. Sending photo
