Livin’ the Dream! 4-18-26

TV #8 in my house and shop – a 43” tv in the screened porch with cable! The WNBA games will be starting in May and I’ll be watching.

Hank’s dad, Stan, put it up for me

Reader photos – none ☹️

I introduced Hank to the chicks.

Tomorrow is Bob’s party. He called me this afternoon to tell me he got over 40 cards today. How can I thank you? He was so tickled and I am so grateful.

    Mary,
Hello, hope you are doing well. And the chicks too! My chickens are happy as they were allowed to free range in the lawn today. They are so entertaining. I just call out, “ ok, Henrietta’s, time to go back in the coop” and I shake a small container of mealworms and the girls just start running toward the coop!! They’re like little airplanes running, wings out and rocking side to side and bouncing a little as they run. I may have mentioned they are all named Henrietta.
I worked in my flower beds for several hours today. I was dressed warmly and wearing work gloves. We started getting snowflakes so I came inside.
Working on my monthly UFO. And I am putting time in on a long standing cross stitch project too.
Take care everyone. Continuing prayers and good thoughts for Elio and Jeanine’s daughter and son-in-law. 🌻

Sunflower: my daughter had 15 capons, a 4-H project, and named them Tom, Dick and Harry. Figured she’d get the name right, some of the time! Not quite Henrietta, but same outcome, although yours was better.

So glad Bob is getting lots of cards! Looking forward to hearing how his day went. The chicks are cute, hope they all survive. Was looking through my recipes the other day and found your recipe for rhubarb jam. I have not made it yet, but was wondering —what size can of pie filling do you use? It’s been a long time since I’ve had anything rhubarb. Mom always made the best rhubarb pie, not too sweet—maybe I’ll get brave and attempt a pie, too (is it cheating if I buy frozen rhubarb? Ha!

Sara – no, it’s not cheating to use frozen rhubarb! I think there’s only one size can of pie filling – I’m finishing up my last container of jam – just in time to make more.

I think I need to make rhubarb jam again! Every year I freeze as much rhubarb as I can fit into my way to full freezer – winter rhubarb crisp is such a treat. A few weeks ago 4 of my cousins and spouses met for a potluck and I offered to make dessert – I offered to make rhubarb crisp, apple crisp or chocolate cake(not sure how everyone felt about rhubarb). The verdict came back overwhelmingly RHUBARB! So from my frozen stash of rhubarb – it was a hit – especially with my cousin from Texas since they haven’t been able to get rhubarb to grow at their place. I think in a couple more weeks I will be picking rhubarb out of my garden – yummy!

Also – very jealous of you lovely screened porch AND new TV. Sigh. I would probably never get anything done with that set up…lol. Sherry W.

It’s the little things that count. A card and a stamp! Hope he enjoys his birthday!

I had a guy in to give me an estimate to putting a walk in shower. His estimate was over the price of a new home my hubby and I bought in the 60s. Won’t be using that estimate as I don’t need a Cadillac version of a 15 minute shower. Getting two more estimates!

I am off to retreat Tuesday. I need it after the stress I have been experiencing. I did go down to the sewing room yesterday and sewed to calm myself down. It’s better than any pill I could swallow!

Talk about high prices— I’ve noticed that a lot of sewing machines cost more than my brand new Ford Escort in 1985– it was ‘only $6000. Loved that little car. Shoot, some machines cost nearly as much as a small car even now! Hope my machines last ‘forever’. Frost warning for the next two nights, then highs in the 70s and 80s. I forget what normal April weather is supposed to be—lol.

We woke up to a light dusting of snow on the ground! will winter never end? The forecast is for some nicer weather this week, so I shall wait to clean up our yard of all the small sticks till then. I see some spring flowers are popping up, yea! I will make a pot roast today and spend some time cleaning and organizing the mess in my quilting space. Have a great time at Bobs party, wishing him a great year ahead.

I hope my card got to Bob before his birthday, but if not, he will enjoy it later. I mailed it earlier this week; don’t remember what day.

Mary – Do your chicks ever get through the gate? I noticed you have something along the rest of the fence, but didn’t notice anything on the gate. They can sneak through the smallest space.

I just finished my second DD# 6 yesterday, but have not taken a picture of it yet. I used the rest of my 2 1/4″ strips up, so was happy that box is empty. I will start on my # 10 this coming week.

Our daughter is still in a lot of pain and a little woozy when she gets up, but her husband got her up 5 times yesterday, which is important. He will be preaching this morning and their oldest daughter will stay with her while he is at church. He has his last monthly cancer treatment tomorrow in Aberdeen,SD, about an hour and a half from them. Thanks to all that have prayed for them.

We escaped the bad weather in our area that came through Iowa on Friday. 35* this morning.

Jeanine – until the chicks grow more, I have a double barricade in front – this is not my first rodeo! Haha!!!

So happy to hear Bob was tickled with receiving all those cards! What a happy birthday! Congratulations on your new TV. Enclosed patio, fresh air and cable tv sounds wonderful to me. It’s always fun to see Hank!

  7. Dee from Shell Rock

I always try to include a note of some sort when we do cards. I too enjoy it. So, tell me, are your big chickens like my sister’s? They die a natural death? That’s the way it would need to be here with me. I always coo over the baby chicks, but I don’t have a chicken house or yard anymore. And online today there was an article about your birth month animal. Mine was a red fox. My husband hated my birthstone, so always bought me the September sapphire. So the September animal is the groundhog. NOOOOOOO! I have only seen 1 this year. They have something for everything anymore. Have a great Sunday.

Dee – yes, I run a retirement home for all animals! Chickens are never gotten rid of – they simply die of old age. I have some now that are 9-10 years old! Of course they no longer lay but they are happy!

      1. Teresa from Maple Ridge, BC

We were the same Mary, they lived a long happy life. One even got to be 11-1/2. We took two chickens to our wonderful vet to have them put down, one had bumble foot and no matter how hard I tried I couldn’t get rid of it and she became septic. I couldn’t stand to see her suffer, and the old one we took to our vet too, I can’t remember why but we didn’t want her to suffer either. The others died of old age.

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Teresa – I have also used the vet to euthanize a sick chicken – like you, I couldn’t bear to see her suffer.

          1. Teresa from Maple Ridge, BC

The funny thing is our vet isn’t a bird vet but she rescued a chicken once from the farm she boarded her horse at because it was being picked on. It lived at the vet office during the day with her and then she took it home every night. I knew she would help us out. She’s such a sweet and caring vet. You should have seen the other people there when I came in with a box they said oh do you have a cat, I said no a chicken, our vet picked her up and was patting her like you would a dog while she asked me all the questions. I don’t think anyone there had ever seen a chicken, and that particular one was a white crested black polish (bad hair chicken) so they were doubly amazed.

Dee, This is the first time I have heard of each month having an animal. So, my birthday is in September and you tell me the animal is a groundhog. Totally NOOOO, just like you. In fact it is actually insulting having a destructive rodent as our month’s animal. Who ever thought of that?
