No, not the magazine – Country Sampler Quilt Shop in Spring Green, WI – quilts, counted cross stitch and home dec, all rolled into one gorgeous shop. Connie has been there last week for a cross stitch retreat and she sent these pictures for you to enjoy.

What a fun time they must have had!! What gorgeous framed pieces – almost makes me want to change my mind and take it up ….. but then I come to my senses!
The farm calls my name –

Oh, Dottie, you just can’t wait to greet me, especially if I have an armful of hay. But in trying to reach the hay your head and horns found my bare leg a couple days ago.

The wound was thoroughly cleaned, disinfected and wrapped – the sock over the top is just a little extra in case I bump it. Not to worry. Nothing there to stitch so don’t tell me to go to the doctor.
Reader photos

Pammie just celebrated her 20th birthday and is hanging in there like lots of old ladies I know.

I just read this term about improv quilting – now called “dirty quilting” – my favorite way to sew! Here’s the pile of scraps:

Here’s the block:

This is what I did while watching ballgames tonight.
A reader said she made Bonnie’s Lozenge Quilt in these colors – found the pic online. Is it yours?

Congrats to the NY Knicks who just won! I’m glad for them – it was their turn.

What a wonderful post. I’m a day late in reading it but sure was worth it. Mary your leg!!! Ouch! Lucky Connie to get to go the Country Samper for a stitching retreat. I will probably never get to visit that shop as i live in New Hampshire but I do get their newletter and every issue is eye candy. I have ordered a couple of things from them. The picture of the Lozenger quilt that you posted was indeed my inspiration. I think I first saw it on Pinterest. I used creamier neutrals as that is what I had the most of. I used Bonnie Hunter’s pattern except I did make my rectangles a little longer.
Ginger – oh, thank you for telling me it was yours because of course I couldn’t remember. When I saw the picture on Pinterest I loved it, too. It’s on my list!!!
Oh yes, Happy Anniversary 😉.
I have ordered fabric from Country Sampler, it’s prettier than online. Everything was prettier than online.
Mary, your leg looked awful, maybe you should get some shin guards!!!
Love the quilts today.
Jo – shin guards would be helpful, wouldn’t they? But I’d have to find them, put them on every time – such a nuisance – haha!!! I’m a tough old bird.
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, Mary. I think this is the right day, June 14. Hope your leg is better. Tetanus shot?
Diane – thank you! You’ve all got better memories than me. Leg is good.
Mary, I like to call my scraps “the parts department”. I love quilting like that too! The ‘Lozenge’ quilt you have pictured here indicates perfectly why I love your straight-line quilting so much … it doesn’t detract from all the beautiful fabrics used (IMHO). Have a nice Sunday!
Candy – and that’s exactly why I prefer it, too – all the fancy quilting detracts from the fabric and design – I think it’s wonderful in whole cloth quilts but pieced? No
I love country sampler quilt shop, I tried cross stitch but not my thing, still have Two pieces half done.
Happy birthday Pammy. Love all the quilts and decor seen here, just beautiful. hope your leg heels fast.
The names of the ladies at the store rang a bell. Yes, I have one their books: STEP BACK IN TIME. I especially liked the “Wooden Ships” pattern. How wonderful Connie could go visit and sent us some more Patriotic themed presentations.
One learns something every day on your blog, Mary. Dirty quilter for improve work. who knew?!
Happy Flag Day!
Jan – I’m sure someone in the quilt world simply coined the phrase and it caught someone’s ear – dirty quilting – ha!
Loved the quilt show with many patriotic quilts included. Such great inspiration for us all
Of course the animals are a prime attraction! Sure hope your leg is feeling better. Those horns are a scary warning.
Happy anniversary. I hope you did something you both enjoyed to celebrate. (Iced tea on the porch)?
Pat – thank you – what a memory you have!
Your wound gave me shivers up and down my spine. Hope it heals quickly. If it gets worse, try a compression sock.
That store in WI looks amazing. I would love to go there but way to far away. Darn! Thanks, Connie, for the fun photos.
I laughed when I saw your scraps with the little red and white dogs. I have a pack of 2 and 1/2 inch squares with those red and white dogs and have not been able to come up with how to use them. I will check out “dirty quilting” to come up with an idea for them. Thanks so much for all of your posts which are the highlight of my day. I love your animals. I had a cat, Lady D, who lived for 18 years. She was the most beautiful calico I have ever seen.
I recognize the “Lozenge” quilt as a Country Sampler pattern of a few years ago. It was called “Halloweenish”. They might have sold it as a kit.
Beautiful cross stitch! Nope I don’t do it except for small things. I admire those who do.
Gorgeous cool morning here. Prepping for retreat but not in the sewing room. Yesterday I spent most of the day there in the sewing room. I was able to get a few things completed and organized. It’s my happy place.
Sheryl, I really like your chicken quilt. I have made a chicken quilt but a different pattern. Can you tell me the pattern name.
Mary, hope that wound heals quickly. Happy birthday to Pammie.
It’s been progressively warmer every day, for the last three days. Today is supposed to get to 31C which is 88F. That is warm for here. Can’t complain though and we have a pool here, so we can always swim.
Have a wonderful Sunday everyone.
Thank you, Teresa. The name of the quilt is Chicken Scratch by Poppie Cotton. I added another row of chickens to make the quilt longer and made all the quilt blocks in the chickens different. It was a fun quilt to make.
Ouch Mary! That looks painful.
I used to do cross stitch but then I discovered quilting. Haha I don’t think my eyes are good enough to do it now. Take care of that leg
Dirty quilting – ooh! Another rabbit hole for me to go in!
Our quilt circle at church decided to make a Quilt of Valor. Our main lady thought we would get maybe 12 to 15 blocks. We came through with 45! Enough to make 2 quilts as blocks were 12 1/2″.
Working on a patriotic sampler from Quilt Sampler a few years ago. I forgot how much I love machine applique.
57 degrees this morning. Glorious day for church!
Ouch, take care of that leg Mary, it looks like you are.
I hadn’t heard of dirty quilting either, I like that term. I love dirty quilting it is so relaxing to make. When I do it, mine are all wonky, at all angles. Maybe mine is wonky??
Yesterday I was finally washing my windows. I had just finished the last window on the outside, it was on the porch. I stepped back and tripped over the bucket and kept falling back until I fell into the railing and hit it with my ribs. Ouch, just bruised. Glad I didn’t fall on the concrete, that would have been worse.
Lori – and just that quick, you fell! I’ve done this myself – one careless moment. Glad you didn’t break/crack ribs – I did
That has to be sore Lori. Can you tell me, does aspirin or any over the counter help the pain at all?
Just remembered, that “wonky” straight line quilt design? If you have a zig zag setting on a home sewing machine please consider “wavy” lines. I will send along an image. Very effective. The wavy zigzag is a stitch #3 on an old machine in the back room with a default stitch length of practiically “0”.
Remove quarter inch presser foot.
Insert regular presser foot.
Set that length to a “3” or a “4” for a nice long wavy line.
Stitch width “5”.
I like the idea of the pool noodles. 😀 Can’t you just see it?? LOL!
Another great blog day. I admire cross stitch but will never add that to my list of want to dos. So little result for the time involved IMO.
Take care of that leg. It looks like it hurts like a son-of-a-gun! Happy Sunday all.
Ouch!!! Dottie did get you. Hope it heals quickly. I love all the quilts today and all the cross-stitch samplers are beautiful. I’m with you Mary, I did that years ago but now I’m so into quilting. I hadn’t heard the term dirty quilting. Great idea for little scraps. I learn so much on this blog.
I’m glad the Nicks won too since I heard they hadn’t won for so many years. I’ve been watching the College World Series for the first time. West Virginia University is in it for the first time ever. They beat Troy Friday 7-5 and will play North Carolina tomorrow at 4:00 PT. I love when they win and get to sing Country Roads! Go WV.
Hi Mary, ouch! That leg looks painful! You need some leg pads like they wear when playing cricket 🏏! Or pool noodles on the goat horns! Take care everyone (especially you Mary! ),best wishes from Sandy
“dirty quilting”??? I haven’t heard that one. Quilting with the leftover oddments is my favorite. Does that make me a “dirty quilter”? Yikes!
Country Sampler is a wonderful shop and the staff is so helpful! I’m so glad Connie sent you the photos as I had planned making photo #2 my Flag Day start. I’ve got it kitted so just need to find it.
Dotty did a number on your leg for sure. Not much you can do with that type of wound but keep it clean. Hubby gouged his leg while replacing steps and since he is on blood thinners, we had a terrible time getting it to stop. First thing he said to me was that his tetanus shot was good. Hope you heal quickly and that Dotty learns better horn control. Or you put on jeans when feeding her.
Congrats to the knicks too! You should go to the doc to get it checked out and maybe a tetanus or sine antibiotics. Also what a great picture of Connie and nice to see old friends Mary Ellen R and Paula Barnes….dinosaurs of our industry!😘
Mary Ellen – I wish we could see all our old dinosaur friends from back in the day and catch up on what they’re doing, don’t you?
Happy birthday to Pammie! What is the secret to your long life?! To Mary—hope your leg heals quickly—silly rambunctious goats. I’m with you in not taking up cross stitch—I’ll just admire the work of others.
