Here’s the book I was talking about- why did just a few of you not get the picture????

And today I don’t have plants to move –

Florida residents – I hope you’re safe – even if your yard is flooded and there’s chaos around you, I hope you’re ok.

The book title is The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead.
I have not read the book.

Time is flying, but the date on your post is a month ahead! Just heard from my son in Jacksonville, FL and he said they got a bit of rain and wind but that the hurricane passed them by and didn’t even lose power. I got the picture of the book yesterday and today, so no problems here.

I don’t get your pictures usually on my phone unless I actually click and read the post online. On my iPad I usually read thru my mail provider on line and posts are usually there. Hope this helps a little in figuring out what is going on.

I don’t get any pictures in the emails, but if I click on the link and go to my browser all the pictures show up.

  4. Linda

The pix aren’t coming through on my email either but when I click on “comments” the pix show up there.

Hi Mary, your photos didn’t show up yesterday or today – that is until I went to the comments page. Then everything was there! I originally attributed the loss of photos to my IPAD, which has many issues, but somehow it was all there on the comments page. Go figure!

  6. Henners

Same here. No pic on email but if I go to comments & scroll back up the book shii or WS & yes, the date is a month ahead 10/30/22

Same with me Mary as others. No pictures on the automatic email till I click on comments and go the internet to see your post in it’s entirety including ads to click on.

glad you were able to get your plants in before the frost. what do you use for spray for bugs etc? I have dozens of plants to bring into our garage. We have 2 windows with a southeast exposure with a table in front for my plants. I want to spray them so I don’t carry any bugs with the plants. Hope your cough is better. We are getting rain and some wind from Ian. Cold 51 degrees. Turned the heat on, the first of the season.

Carolyn – I use just a commercial insecticide for houseplants – comes in a spray bottle.

Same here. No pictures from email posts, but when I click comments and go to the top of your post, I get ads, pictures, text and comments space.
It’s getting cooler, but no frost yet!!

Mary, I read that book in January. I thought it was very well written, but it was not an
easy book to read. It told about the atrocities that were imposed on the people. We
were not taught this in school so I thought it was important to read and to try to understand
what really happened during that time in history. I live in NW PA so I am very familiar with
the Underground Railroad. Just wanted to let you know about the content.

No problem with pictures on my iPhone or computer. I’m not a tech person, but could it be the type of devise others are using. I haven’t read that book and there is a lot of controversy about quilts being used to message those traveling North. However, I do like reading about the Underground Railroad and we may never know the actual truth because much of that history was by word of mouth. I love quilts so I like to think they were helpful during that time in history. There are many buildings in Pennsylvania with hidden tunnels and hiding places that were used in the Underground Railroad. We finally have fall weather after an extremely dry, hot and humid summer. Grass is getting green and many plants are blooming as if it were Spring! Summer birds are migrating to warmer areas and winter birds are starting to show up. I love fall!

Ann in PA, you are correct about the controversy. I read the book HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT which is where it started. A professor in Maryland, maybe the Univ. of Maryland, totally debunked that book. One thing he said was slaves did not have fabrics to sew together into Monkey Wrenches or other blocks. Very true. The quilts slaves made were more like the ones made in Gees Bend. They were strips of pants, shirts, dresses etc which were worn out. I am interested in the book, Mary, and hope it is factual.
The pictures did not come yesterday, but the book pic did come today. Never know with internet.

Hi Mary, no problems with photos yesterday or today here in New Zealand! Today is Stella, s 5th birthday, they are in Taiwan wrapping up their former life, back her3 mid November. The girls are enjoying art classes and swimming daily as it is still hot there, while l have the heater on all day and night. Battling away with this mountain of fabric to iron and downsize, it never ends! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

    Hi Mary,
I got the pictures in both emails.
I read the book some time ago. I did not really like it. I am a fan of historical fiction but I felt he mixed
enough fantasy in it to make it difficult to know what was real and what wasn’t. I know it got rave
reviews so maybe I just didn’t understand his type of writing. I have not read any of his other books.

  14. Barbara F

Pictures didn’t come through in the emails on the last two posts. I could go online (link posted at the end of your post) and see the pictures.

  15. Diane Deibler

I read it and did not really like it that much. Not as interesting as some other underground railroad books I’ve read. That’s just my opinion!!!

    Mary,

I think the reason people aren’t getting photos is because they are reading the email and not clicking to go to you blog on their browser. I could be wrong but I thought I wasn’t getting photos on the email so clicked the date or your title which directed me to the web version of the blog. Worked for me anyway.

  17. Diane from Colorado

I haven’t gotten photos yesterday or today—except the succulent desk photo. Normally, I have no problems, so that’s weird.

I have friends in both Florida and South Carolina I have been keeping in contact with. All are safe, thankfully. Friends who live in Venice will travel back tomorrow, but have word their homes survived. Fort Myers looks really horrible as far as damage and destruction. So sad.

Off and on there are no pictures in the emails, which I get on an iPad or iPhone. This is happening more often for me lately, not just the last two emails. The photos are always visible when I go to the website. Like others have mentioned, a quick way there is to click on Comments. I’ve wondered if the problem is with the mail provider I use for Mary’s emails as it can be a little touchy. It’s beyond my understanding!

  19. Charlotte Shira

I got the pictures both days. When I get the email, I click on the large title at the beginning of the email and it takes me right to the blog. Today’s title was the date.

  20. Bonnie McKee

    Hi Mary,
No picks today or yesterday UNTIL I clicked on the blog to read the comments….then the pictures appeared.
Glad to know about the book. I put a hold on the audio version at my local library. With audio I can sew while I listen. I know many of you do the same thing!
Praying for all who are troubled by hurricane Ian.
    Have a great weekend, everyone.

Same for me I only get the pictures when I click on “comment” both on my phone and iPad

  22. Beryl in Owatonna

I thought we were told to use the comment button to view the whole post, quite some time ago. The whole letter you are writing shows up when you use the comment button. Jo’s blog is the same . So glad you got the plants taken care of! We had frost here but good for the next 10 days!

  23. Glenda Fletcher

Mary, same for me. When I click on the comment button and it goes to Safari, your pictures are there with everything that you wrote. I use to get your pictures right a way on your email without having to click on the comment button. That is a lot of work to get all your plants inside before the frost. A very big day for
you. We heard from Randy’s cousin and they are ok, including house. Their daughters’s house not do as
well. They were by a canal. Randy’s friend from college, we haven’t heard from him. That is so devastating.

  24. Diana Stanfill

We came thru fairly well. Lots of limbs down but nothing on the house or the cats. Power came back on tonight.

We had two feral cats we have been feeding and watering. Baby showed up but not mama. I am worried

  25. Debbie R.

I am not getting the pictures in my email message so I have been going to the website and reading the blog from there and the pictures show up there . . . . Technology is great when it works. I’m sure it is very frustrating for you Mary but we appreciate you keeping this up. I LOVE to read the blog.
