Pictures of fall:

Casey

Hank tore cartilage in his shoulder which is common in large breed dogs that grow quickly so he’s been on “bed rest” for weeks now. I haven’t even seen him because he’d get too excited and possibly injure the repair. I have missed him. This is what his dad grew last summer:

Linda from North Carolina picked up this Caitlin Clark trading card at a craft show she attended because she thought of me! Hahahaha!!! I love it and I’ll add it to my collection of CC memorabilia. How did I ever get to be such a big fan of this young woman? Did you watch the Lynx and Liberty game last night? I don’t know if I’ve ever watched such an exciting ending. Anybody else?

I think we have one last gorgeous warm fall day tomorrow and I’ll be able to finish up all the plants. Because of the drought there’s been no lawn mowing for weeks and weeks – so dry and crispy. The grass just breaks when you walk on it. So it’s not pretty around here – just dull and dusty.

My cleaning lady was here yesterday – I’m in love with my house after she’s been here!

My idea of a Super Bowl is a toilet that cleans itself.

Poor little Hank. I hope he is better soon. Beautiful fall quilts and the photos are stunning. Where is the one from with the beautiful fall colors and mountains? Bowers and Daisy are beautiful dogs. 🐶🐶. Super Bowl—count me in! Organizing and cleaning sewing room and closets. Lots of work. Get some sleep everyone. I stop all screen time at 10!and read til about 11. I also take a Benadryl if necessary. Good luck😀

Diane – I should follow your lead and stop screens at 10, too, but I’m just getting going. The dogs are finally settled down, chores are done and kitchen is closed so then I sew and watch the screen.

Oopsie, I hit wrong button and lost my reply.
Just want to agree with Mary and others re: the Super Bowl.😊

Dry, dusty and crunchy grass also here southwest of Houston, Texas. Our pine trees and hackberry trees are really suffering.

Love all things fall, the colors of pumpkins, gourds and trees. The table runner with the leaves is super cute with the variety of tan squares used in the background. Oh, poor Hank, so glad he is on the mend. His coat is so shiny, he is well loved. Did a few fall craft shows with our daughter this weekend and ended up getting 3 Christmas gifts. So nice to get out and about with the fall colors before the cold snap hits us. Our godson who is a lineman (Wisconsin) was sent to Ohio for 2 weeks, then to West Virginia for 9 days and now he is in Florida. Not sure when he will get home to see his family. Every day is a new challenge.

those of us in florida that he is helping appreciate his help more than we can say. thank you. patti in florida

Looks like these gorgeous fall days are ending for us too. Cooler the next few days and, rain in the forecast for tomorrow. The leaves are at peak color here already and, they take your breath away. What a wonderful time of year.
I’m doing some sewing and also making some of Jo’s yard sauce with the tomatoes and peppers from the garden. Smells good already!
I saw a picture on Pinterest of a quilt made of homespun fabric strip blocks. Couldn’t tell how it was made and no info on the site. Someone in the comments suggested stack and whack blocks and, I think that’s how it was made. I’m going to give it a try tomorrow.

how funny that i recognized hank before i ever even got to his eyes. he is such a handsome boy. i’m sorry he was hurt. must be driving him crazy having to be still. i’m sure he’ll be glad to see you and wrestle with keeper. i have to say i’ve never seen some of the types of pumpkins that hank’s dad grew. never knew they could have such ‘bumps’ on them.
all the pictures today are fabulous. those mountain vistas speak to me, especially all the colors. i have never lived in or near mountains (well, i did live in denver but was 5-8 years old – we went up to pike’s peak and had to put chains on the tire because we were stuck in the snow). i do remember the alps and other mountain ranges in europe as i was old enough. but as an a teenager and adult, i’ve always lived in the city.
some of the towns around me are having serious water issues, roads washed away (one that takes me to the eye doc), water in the houses up to 4′ in whole neighborhoods. kids like to play in in but it carries very bad germs and alligators and snakes, etc. birds have been displaced. my pond is gradually going down.
i am using what concentration i have on making more kennel quilts. got 3 more tops ready yesterday. trying to stay within that size range (finished of 12×16″) is not easy for me. i seem to delight in making things hard for me, oh well. i have two more tops i’m working on and then i’ll layer and quilt. $$ always comes first in these disaster situations but the kennel quilts help the animals directly.
i saw a picture online last night and i want to go down that rabbit hole, which is how i come up with so many stacks of different blocks. i get bored and quit and work on something else,
i did have a rude awakening when i had mr ed take pictures of my quilting stuff, egads to someone who isn’ a quilter, i must look like a serious hoarder. my stuff does not jeopardize walking or anything, i just a ton of it. i am going to have to spend some serious time sorting up there. but once i get up there i want to quilt on the longarm, not sort through things. i know, i could have it alot rougher than i do.
love the conversations on this blog, if we all had a ‘super bowl’ like mary wants, our lives would be so much cleaner. i have been enjoying having my cleaning crew come. mr, ed raises his eyebrows but i don’t see him doing it. hugs to all, patti in florida

Patti, I prefer the term “collector” instead of “hoarder”. And, I don’t think there’s another quilter out there that would judge someone else’s fabric stash. You go girl and enjoy all the beautiful quilts you have planned. And , I love all the quilt pictures you share.

    2. Jeanine from SE Iowa

Patti – Regarding the binding that you turned up on the kennel quilt—-one half inch is too short. I use this method on the quilts we tie at church, but you need about an inch to make it work easier. I do not have any problem at all finishing the binding like that. It takes a little time to pin the binding down, but the machine work is quicker. I don’t do the binding like that on the long arm quilts I make.
I always enjoy reading your posts, and also enjoy seeing all the quilts you make. I am happy you are okay after the hurricane compared to many others.

      1. patti

thank you both, connie and jeanine. quilters would understand my ‘collection’ but not others. i’m trying to sew as fast as i can and will continue as long as i am physically able. thanks again, patti in florida

Beautiful fall pictures and projects. I’m with Patti and Mary – I’ll stick with the regular binding.
Scrolling down when I saw the coloring and eyes I knew it was a Hank picture! Hank is a handsome boy! So sorry to hear about his surgery, but glad he’s on the mend.
It hasn’t felt much like Fall around here. At least the mornings are in the high 70’s so I can walk. Relief is in site, though. Our highs will be in the 90’s where our lows were during most of the summer. I’m ready.

Yes! That would be a “super bowl”! I want one too! Loved all of the pictures and I’m sad hearing about Hank’s injury. I hope he heals fast, I’m sure he misses visiting with you and your crew. I took that picture looking out my window having coffee the other morning. Our trees are turning fast but the leaves are dropping just as fast! I think it’s the dry weather we’ve had like a lot here have mentioned. And that picture of the Northern Lights is mine! We have never seen them and I was so excited, I texted my neighbors to come outside and see them! They were so appreciative. It was truly amazing to see them right here in Massachusetts. They were visible to the naked eye but when you took a picture the colors were stunning! I guess the camera picks up color better than we can see them. Anyone know for sure? I started making a quilt that I’ve wanted to make for a while. I’m learning paper piecing and it’s the “little house” pattern that’s on various youtube channels. It’s fun but I’m not very good at it yet, haha. I’m actually using a method that I watched where you fold on the lines that are traced on freezer paper and you sew right next to the fold. I like that better than the sewing right through the paper. I think. I guess I should have gotten up and read the blog instead of lying there trying to go back to sleep last night when the cat woke me up around 3… Jan in MA

We “saw” the Aurora on Thursday night too! It looked like your photo, but ONLY through the smartphone. To the naked eye, there was just the faintest pink areas in the night sky. My husband has been wanting to see the Aurora for over a year. Glad we didn’t have to go to Alaska. Your autumn colors are beautiful!

  9. Gail in Ohio

Love the photos!!! Hope poor Hank heals quickly and well.
Fall is upon us here in east central Ohio too and we’re still in a drought situation. We did get a good rain at the end of September (it put a damper on our county fair) so my yard is mostly green again and I’ve had to mow a few times since then. Unfortunately, the rain came too late to help the beans and corn crops that were already done filling out – I’m afraid our local crop yields will be very poor.
I’ve been making and altering costumes for our annual Sweet Adelines show this weekend – hopefully I can get back to quilting this week! I’ve missed it, but there have been too many other things that need my attention lately. That leaf table runner is inspiring. I’d also better get some weeds pulled while it’s still decent weather – the drought hasn’t slowed them down! LOL!

What awesome pictures! Love all the dogs 😻. Will send new pictures of Penny and Lucy. Fall is just the best time of year! We are having drought issues and burn bans in northeast Texas so would enjoy a good rain. My lantana and zinnias are holding up 🥰. Prayers for all the storm victims. I have been having seriously high blood pressures and the meds are not working fast enough. It got up to 239/90 at the dentist so still waiting to get that work done ☹️. Trying not to stress.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Pamela – that is very high but if it went that high just at the dentist I could understand – I hate going to the dentist! Hugs to Penny and Lucy

oh my, could you have ‘white coat’ syndrome? that’s what they tell me when my bp is up at the doctor’s office. i worry when it goes up. good luck with yours. patti in florida

Enjoyed the photos and chit chat this morning. I am home from a 4-day retreat then errands yesterday so now back to routine I hope and home for a while. We are expecting a very much needed cool down. I am ready for fall. We need rain again! But it’s been good for the farmers as the fields are being stripped!

  12. GingerS

Loved the pictures today. Fall is my favorite season!! Poor Hank. I’m sure you miss him and that he would love to see you too. Loved your idea of a super bowl. We are getting lots of wind today so that should bring down a lot of leaves. Then raking and blowing.

  13. Kelli

Absolutely love all the fall photos! Hank’s Dad has sure been busy – the pumpkins are amazing. So sorry Hank has been down for the count – hopefully the tear is healing well and you can see him soon! Absolutely LOVE the Super Bowl comment – if you find one – send the info ASAP! 🤣 Have a good Saturday 🥰

    We’re all not sleeping!
Beautiful pictures! The fall leaves by the blue mountains are stunning. I love the pictures I’ve seen of the Northern lights. Wow! But I can’t see them by my house either because of the lights.
Poor Hank! Never heard of that. Bank’s dad has been busy. Beautiful display of gourds and pumpkins.
I wonder if our leaves will turn, or not because we have too much drought. The leaves i see on the ground are all brown and shriveled.
Glad to hear Patti was okay in the hurricane. Florida was lucky that it hit at low tide and not a direct hit on Tampa Bay. Still a lot of damage. But they seem ready to repair. So much distruction. I can’t even imagine what North Carolina is going through. Too much death and destruction.
Take care everyone. And thank God for small blessings.

  15. Janet S

Too funny Mary – a toilet bowl that cleans itself. Surely, we would all like that! The leaf table runner is wonderful. Lately, we have had the northern lights show. They are spectacular when they appear but we sure don’t get them very often(near Minneapolis/St Paul). Naturally, I have been sleeping throughout which I guess is okay as I would have to get in the car and drive out in the open to really enjoy them. Has anyone heard if Caitlin is going to England? Apparently, they pay better and for sure are more civil and appreciative of her amazing talent. Here I am not able to sleep and it’s 3:00 AM. Drat, I get frustrated sleeping 4 hours and then can’t get back to sleep. I guess I should do something constructive and just appreciate it. Take care everyone and have a nice weekend.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Janet S – so I can’t sleep either and try not to take my IPad to bed because of reports about screens keeping you awake. I read and then hopefully fall asleep when I turn out the light – but it’s rare. And then when I’m actually sleeping yet in the morning I have a friend who always calls me about 8:15 on Saturday morning……..

  16. Sharon G.

Mary – Yes, my idea of Super Bowl, too. 😂
Love the fall photos with all the colors. I decided I love the color pumpkin. I don’t have one fat quarter that color.
Sorry to hear about Hank but resting will help.
Such a delight to see the gourds, squash, and pumpkins. 🎃 Someone has a green thumb.
I’m living in a different town now so I suppose I’ll have trick or treaters. I remember when I was a kid, our Halloween sacks were pillowcases and we got yummy things like candied apples, popcorn balls, and chocolate chip cookies from some of the neighbors. Fond memory.
    Take care everyone.

    1. Kris in WI

Halloween treats? Yes, and a shiny nickel from the ‘”rich” people down the street…back in the day when a nickel would buy a regular size candy bar! I know, I’m showing my age. Kris

  17. Vicki

Oh, I love the bright oranges of the trees in the last mountain/tree picture. You are up late – as this posted to me at 12:31 a.m. I am awake after being asleep for 2 hours. I hate when that happens. All those gourds and pumpkins are amazing. The leaf table runner took a lot of time and handwork. Thanks to everyone for sharing.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Vicki – I’m a bad sleeper, too, and I take pills for it but they don’t always work so my theory has become to stay up late instead of laying there for hours trying to get to sleep. I have a project I’m working on plus some Christmas gifts that I want done before my surgery so I sew pretty late – and then I realized that I hadn’t posted the blog yet!!! That’s why it was so late.
