Fabulous Fall, 10-10-24

I have nothing of any interest to say – I cleaned plants nearly all day.

Reader photos

And this picture is for all of you who so kindly sent my friend Margaret a birthday card. Look how many she got! And she loved all the notes you wrote her. Thanks for making her feel so special on her birthday!

This is just an interesting observation – these little bees gather at this jar every warm afternoon. I try to keep the jar very full so they can easily get a drink.

Becky and I are playing music at Concord tomorrow.

Watching the Lynx vs the Liberty – I’m pulling for the Lynx? You?

We watched that game last night and I had to stand up through the whole overtime. It was so exciting.
I have been watching The Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix while working on a UFO I cut out about 10 years ago, neatly tied all the pieces together, including fabric for the backing, and left it on a shelf. No elves came to sew it, so it’s time to give it some attention. I even had pulled thread to match and the bobbin was wound.
We are expecting 70 degrees over the weekend and then temps will begin to drop. My teacher daughter had received a very small hydrangea as a gift in June 2023 and asked me to save it from neglect. I babied it in the house for a year and in May planted it in a large pot on the patio. My other pots are all petunias, but this one I am going to move to the garage for the winter to avoid the hard freeze and water sparingly while it is dormant. Next spring after the last frost I will move it back out and see how it does. Then I can find a place to plant it in a forever home. Fingers crossed it makes it.
I am glad to hear you are feeling well leading up to your surgery. Your recovery will be better with a good beginning.
Thanks for your blog about nothing.

I so enjoy your blog about nothing! I wish we could use emojis like love, laughing, etc. on your photos. I loved the funnies. We have gorgeous weather once again in NE Indiana. I feel so awful for the people who had to endure such horrible storms while we were enjoying sunshine and nice temps. I do know what is coming around the corner so I am enjoying the weather while we have it.

How do you keep your cats out of your plants? I can’t have any plants without my cats pulling the leaves off, digging in the pot, or dumping them on the floor.

Karen – maybe they don’t bother them because they’re cacti and succulents? Have you tried covering the dirt with clear plastic wrap or even foil to discourage them? I live with 8 cats and theyve never been interested – mine are indoor/outdoor cats and have plenty of available dirt to dig in outside – maybe that’s it?

Mary, you inspire me with all those plants and keeping them from year to year. I feel good if I keep our 2 garden mums going through the fall. Plants don’t seem to survive me; the struggle is real. We have had some nice fall weather here and have been helping our daughter add some plants to her landscaping. Removing rock, digging holes and planting. So far, we have put in 9 peonies, 7 hydrangeas, and over 400 bulbs into bulb boxes. The bulb boxes are a neat way to keep squirrels from digging up your bulbs, but you need to dig a 12-inch-deep hole to put them in. I hope everything survives the winter and her yard is filled with glorious blooms and color next year. My shoulders and hands are about done in with all the digging in dirt.
So glad Margaret enjoyed all her cards, kindness is so easy to share. Happy fall, y’all

Love the picture of the bees getting a drink! When I had my hummingbird feeder out it was very busy with bees. Unfortunately the ants loved it as well. I read to coat the shepherds hook with olive oil & it would keep the ants off the feeder. Worked like a charm! Diana, hoping you have a bright beautiful fall day for your mother’s grave side services, my condolences. Pattie in FL so glad you survived the hurricane & with little damage! It’s gotten pretty chilly here in SW OH & frost is expected next week. My baskets of Impatients are beautiful, but will be letting the deer enjoy them. Hoping to save my geraniums for next year. Someone suggested putting them into shopping bags to protect them from the cold in my garage. It’s worth a try. I don’t have a basement. One of my friends who owns a lake house has offered it to us for 5 days to enjoy the beautiful fall weather. Yes, I’ll be taking my travel machine to do a bit of sewing & will be cutting out projects for a quilt retreat the following week. Have been going to this retreat in Holmes County for close to 25 yrs! Such fun!!

The quilts, flowers and fall decor are beautiful. That bison is amazing.
Mary, are you still pain free? Thanks for the blog. 🥰

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jeanie S – yes, I’m pain free except for my aching muscles, joints, back and hands after moving all the plants inside – haha!! I wish my drs would decide to forget about the surgery since I feel so good!

  7. Joy in NW Iowa

Friend in SE South Dakota our flowers are so bright and vivid also. Usually the potted flowers are just tired looking by October but not this year! Thanks for sharing!
I’m so happy Margaret loved all her cards!
Mary, I’m thinking about you cleaning your flowers and getting them ready for winter. You are like my farmer hubby Combining his crop and storing for the winter. It is going to freeeze Monday morning here so Jay says he’s going to let his tomatoes go. I wonder if he will ….
I don’t think we have heard from the gal in Rapid City for a long time.?.?
Patti we are happy you survived the hurricane !

Joy – you’re right! Where’s Betty? I will check on her. I have only 4 large cacti left to clean – my back will be so glad to recuperate! But I knew that freeze was coming up and I’ve been able to move pots slowly into the house, all cleaned and de-bugged!!

We watched that Lynx game as well. We did not think they were going to be able to pull it out, but what an exciting ending! We have been rooting for the Lynx, too, since the Fever were done. They were down by 18 points at one point, but they never gave up, and it paid off in the end.
Enjoyed all the pictures today. What a sweet picture of Margaret and her cards. So glad we could make her day. She must be a very special lady…..both you and Margaret, for all the years you have played piano/organ for your church. That is such a blessing. Just ask someone that has no pianist in their church. We are blessed with three different people that can play for us.
Another beautiful day in store for us here in SE Iowa. Enjoying every one of them!

Jeanine – I, too, am enjoying another morning on the porch with my coffee – every one of these gorgeous days are appreciated. Yes, what a great game!!

  9. Diana in Des Moines

It has been a beautiful fall in Iowa. Leaves are starting to turn here in Des Moines. We’re going to Wisconsin at the end of the month, and it’s always the highlight of our year. The colors on the Mississippi are the best.
Cooler weather for the weekend. Mom’s graveside service is tomorrow and I told them no tent as I want to be open to the sun – the way my mom loved it.
Hopefully I can get in the sewing room soon. Been over 3 weeks and I think I’m having withdrawals! LOL

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Diana – what a great idea to have no tent! Another reader, Carol, is having her mom’s services tomorrow, too. Sad days but happy for the moms who have gone to Heaven.

Patti in Florida, so glad to see you came through Milton OK and that you were able to sew yesterday. The readers shared lovely fall pictures. What a crazy thing about the bees!

I’m with you too Lisa. Can’t thank Mary’s readers enough for sharing such beautiful photos to begin my day. So interesting and a good variety. Fall truly is a colorful time in so many areas of our nation. No raking leaves here yet. Patti i like your idea of an orphan block to begin for a pet mat. I usually stop at JoAnns and buy fleece remnants and donate them to our pet shelter but like the idea of a mat.

super quick note. today’s post had fantastic pictures and great information.
we made it through the hurricane without loss of power. only damage was screens blowing out of the pool screen enclosure (expected by me). we have one flapping that makes for good halloween decor – very ragged. there was some small leaking at the sliding glass door – which did not come in house. guess what i’ll be bugging dh to fix. i’m very very tired and stressed.
i made this little kennel quilt today. yes it is 12 x 16″. made for the kennels that they keep cats in and also for the small puppies. i used a spare block and made it larger. will not do this type binding again – it was a true pain in the a**.
bed for me. all the prayers everyone said worked. thanks. patti in florida

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Patti – what method did you use for the binding that you disliked so much? I hate any binding but would like to hear about yours.

      1. patti

i turned the backing to the front. it was suggested to cut it 1/2″ away from the quilt top, fold to the edge and then fold over again. sounds all basic and pretty much was until i got to the corners. one corner absolutely refused to miter. i ended up zigzagging across it numerous times to keep it in place. would have been easier to put a real binding on it. or just done the pillowcase thing. but i quilted the center block to the batting first, then added the back and only had to stitch in in the borders and once through the block. had seen someone do it this way but i didn’t like it. others might. patti in florida
