Thinking of our Florida readers, 10-9-24

I know we’re all watching the weather reports from Florida and I honestly can’t imagine what that much rain must feel like! And the wind! Be safe!

Reader photos

I stopped at the thrift store today and bought this book of ours for $1.00 – sadly it cost much more than that to print the book originally.

I’m watching the hurricane coverage and will sign off now hoping all will “Be Still”, Psalm 46:10, very soon.

HI Everyone, I heard from my sister this morning. They are back in their home near Venice and they have electricity and their landline:) They said the TEACHERS and PRINCIPAL and LUNCH PEOPLE took very good care of them in the Middle School. Wasn’t that great? I hope all of their homes were okay, too. Other friends in Clermont near Orlando had some damage to the roof and yard, but are safe, too. What a storm. I was happy to hear about the Villages because we have neighbors there. The little Beagle is just precious. We had the runt of the litter; little Spotty was a tiny, sweet little girl.

Oh yes—whew! Well, my observation skills are pitiful! I thought that was the same adorable dog. They are very cute. Don’t those beautiful brown eyes get you? Gorgeous!

Diane – good to know your sister is fine and so is Patti and Lynn. Also good to learn that about the Villages as we know people who have a place there. I talked to one couple who go to Lakeland and they are still here as they’re waiting to see what they will go to and had not heard from any of their neighbors due to cell service out this morning.
I’m hoping tonight to see the Northern Lights at camp here. We’re on Lake Ontario so I keep looking out my motor home windows cause it’s only 55 degrees outside if I were to go sit by the water in the golf cart waiting.

Although we live in Florida in the winter, we aren’t there yet. We live in The Villages, a huge retirement golf community in central Florida. When they built The Villages, which is in central Florida, they wisely put all the utilities underground. As a result, we didn’t even lose power yesterday. Losing ones air conditioning is a great fear because without air conditioning, mold can start up very quickly and cost thousands of dollars to remediate. It was a huge and frightening storm, and I’m glad I wasn’t there to be terrified of it. Sitting here in Vernon’s in fear all day yesterday watching it march across the state was stressful enough. I loved all the fall decorations today!

Patti, I wondered about you and others in Milton’s path. “Ride out the storm” is easier said than done. Prayers for comfort, help in clean-up and stamina for some many responders and those coming to aid of neighbors. Thanks for letting us know how it’s going.
Love all the Fall/Autumn decorations. I have been remiss in getting mine out. This inspires me to move forward. Currently focused on making a Fall quilt for myself. Picture to come, hopefully before the end of October!!

Thinking of Patti and other readers in Florida, and hoping they stay safe!
All the pictures of quilts and fall decor are so pretty. Thanks for sharing them.

Do beagles not have the cutest darn faces. I love the pet pictures. And all the other photos your readers are so kind to send in for us to admire. I look forward to them in each of your posts to see what others are working on, finished, making for charity or what they are doing in their yards. I know after seeing all the destruction from recent hurricanes I couldn’t live in areas of packing up and evacuating cause I am still trying to clean up my yard and put away items so it’s ready for next spring. I give so much credit to all those working hard in these areas from providing food, to risking their lives saving people and pets, to those lending a shoulder to lean on for guidance moving forward. My prayers for all those coping.

I love that book! I made several of the Oh Susannah! dolls as Christmas presents for friends and family back in the day.

Ruth – you’re dating yourself, My Dear! Hahah! I had forgotten about those little dolls – remember when we all made many kinds of dolls?

  7. Lynette in Orlando

Here in Orlando the storm was the worst storm I’ve ever been through. The wind was unbelievable. Lots and lots of rain. Ready for the sun to come up and see how my house and yard look. As bad as it was here, I cannot imagine how bad it was over on the West coast and the East coast got battered also. Daylight will let us see how Florida made it through…….

  8. Vicki

The force of the hurricane is unimaginable. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Florida. The fall decor and quilts are eye candy. Jeanine, you make so many quilts – do you do the piecing, quilting, and binding? If someone else does the quilting, how do they keep up with you? Sweet beagle. Mary, I have that quilt book. I bought it at your shop.

    1. Jeanine from SE Iowa

Vicki – Yes, I do most of the piecing, quilting and binding, but I also do some long arm work on some from our small quilting group. We give most of our quilts to our local hospital, and a lot of them go to the Hospice House or to the infusion center. We just want them to be a blessing to those going through difficult times.

  9. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Florida. I too cannot imagine all the rain and then the hurricane comes with more. I hope that everyone is safe.

  10. Jo in Wyoming

I have a few friends in Florida as well, we pray for their safety.
Our quilting friends up in northern Wyoming are asking for snow!! It will help put the fires out. It’s bad up there, and the smoke drifting down here.
All the fall decorations are grand, even the beagle puppy.

  11. patti

quick note to all. all the fall/halloween decorations are fabulous. aren’t they so fun? i just love them. that painting of the two pumpkins on brown is precious. love the quilt.
our tv has had non-stop hurricane coverage since sunday. as i write the eye of the storm is about 50 miles southwest of me. i still have power and cell service right now. am almost afraid to go to bed. at this particular moment it is quiet, but it doesn’t last longer than 10 minutes then starts up again. horrendous wind and rain. the cat is totally upset also. he keeps needing comforting. he has just finally gone to bed.
i tried to sew some today but couldn’t concentrate and kept getting up and walking away. just ditzy stuff. nothing major or important. though i did get caught up on my only b.o.m. first one in years i’ve managed to stay caught up on. my christmas quilt with the 3″ finished squares is languishing. lots of tiny tiny paper piecing, last block about did me in. will definitely have to wait til after the storms.
people here have been paying attention to evacuation orders. only evacuations in my county are of mobile homes, rvs and campers. tons of rain. expecting up to 20″. i know we got at least 5-6″ before dark.
guess i should bite the bullet and go to bed. the sun will come up again tomorrow. God promised
He would not destroy the world with floods again. sleep well all, patti in florida

  12. Alice in SW OH

Loving all the fall pictures & especially the beagle pup! I have 2 nieces, a nephew, & also dear friends who live in the Tampa area. My friends opted to ride out the storm. I know I wouldn’t have! Today was a day of preparing for fall. Clearing off my patio of vegetable plants & my friend Ron fixed a wire shelf in my garage which resulted in moving things out of my garage, cleaning & rearranging things. So nice to have all that done & so happy he offered to help! Prayers for all those in Florida!

  13. Diane, Squeak, Buddy in Central Ohio

Does anyone know the name of the pattern with the kitty coming out of and from behind the pumpkin?
    Thanks. Diane

    1. Barbara Moore

Diane – I made that wall hanging years ago. I dug around and found the pattern. It’s from the McCall’s Quick Quilts issue, Nov. 2004. I found it for sale on Amazon for less than $4. It’s also on eBay. It’s called “Pumpkin Peepers”. Have fun! Barb in Tucson

  14. Jan Hebert in MA

Yes, thoughts and prayers for the residents and the thousands of volunteers and service people there to help. The cleanup is going to take a while, for sure. Jan in MA

  15. Jeanie S, Central IL

All the autumn decor is stunning! I love the precious little beagle.
    Thanks, Mary 🥰

My sister and brother in law are in Venice, FL smack in the middle of the hurricane. They evacuated to a middle school, but lost cell service at 2 PM. My cousin is in Fort Myers. I keep watching the Weather Channel. They told me not to worry—ha!
The quilts and decorations are so pretty.
Hoping for good news tomorrow from Florida.

  17. Joy in NW Iowa
