Fun Friday, 3-15-24

Tomorrow, March 16, is Connie’s birthday – too bad she’s at Padre Island and I’m here on the farm! I would love to have some retail therapy with her – oh, the shopping we could do!

Remember Lu that we sent cards to?

Lu passed away this week – thank you to anyone who sent her a card. Her good friend, Doris, told me how much she enjoyed receiving them. Sigh.

Hank came to his new home today. Here he is with his new mom, Michele.

I’m going to meet him tomorrow!

The kids came today with two of their friends to make Easter eggs, drive the golf cart, explore the grove and the barn and enjoy the country air.

Ella, me, Lucy

Thank you to Peggy Sanford and Donna Ondler for the newspaper clippings about Caitlin – I love to read them all. I’ll get over my basketball obsession when March Madness is over but I’ll be depressed.

I think I need to devote an entire post to the grandmother’s flower garden project – so maybe tomorrow or Sunday. Iowa State is playing the second game starting at 8:30 tonight. I’m getting my sewing prepared to work on. I rarely sit and watch the tv screen – thus the closed captioning is of very little value to me. I know I’m in the minority but that’s just how I roll.

And now I’m going to roll right into the Iowa State game!!

I’m so sorry to hear about Lu. I felt a connection with our new friends who received cards because I know the joy it brought mom and could imagine the blessings it brought them. I pray for peace and comfort for Lu’s friends and family.

  2. Ginger S

I’m sorry to hear about Lu. I’m glad she enjoyed everyone’s cards. The kids must have a blast at your house. I think I would too!!!! I rarely “watch” TV, I am just listening . I probably would be very well suited to the days when everyone gathered around the radio. During the day when I’m sewing, I listen to public radio. Looking forward to your post on the vintage Grandmother’s Flower Garden. Happy St. Patrick’s Day on Sunday.

Sorry to hear about Lu. Sending hugs.

Happy Birthday to Connie, yes some retail therapy does a soul wonders. After a long winter, retail is so refreshing. Looks like a great time was had on the farm. Plus, Hank will have a great home.
We got about 8” of very wet snow this week. We needed the moisture.
The grandmothers flower garden quilt is so interesting. Such a great way to correct some boo-boo’s.

  4. Jeanie S, Central IL

How fun for Lucy and Ella to come out to the farm. Hank is precious, and he looks so comfy with Mom, like he knows he is safe and loved.
As you all know, yesterday was an extreme weather day in the Midwest. Our youngest son’s family lives in southwestern IL; yesterday afternoon they had lots of hail-so much hail my grandson’s back car window was obliterated. Many cars in their area were damaged. Thankfully, our family was not injured; the car can be repaired.
Enjoy the game, Mary. Thanks, 🥰

Jeanie – oh my gosh! That is horrible hail when it breaks out car windows – we saw on the news where the storm was tracking and felt fortunate we live north of the path.

Hi Mary, Nice of you to have the 2 girls and do things with them. I was a den mother for boy scouts and then I opened a ceramic shop and I would work with 20 to 25 kids each week at the shop. Years later I have had some of these kids now adults with kids of their own thank me for teaching them ceramics and the good memories they have from back then.

What type of puppy is Hank?
We were 70 and cloudy but everywhere the daffodils are in bloom, my star magnolia bush in full bloom along with cherry & peach trees. I am waiting for my red bud trees to bloom. Spring is here but next week cooler temperatures. Carolyn b Shenandoah Valley Va

Carolyn – Hank is a golden retriever. Last fall their young adult golden named Beamer simply dropped over dead – literally! Vet could find no cause – oh, such heartbreak! They have been waiting all this time for Hank – oh, such joy today!! You know about heartbreak.

      1. Carolyn Boutilier

Thanks Mary, I may look into a golden retriever puppy later. Carolyn b

Carolyn – you’ll be able to follow Hank here on the blog! How are you? Send me an email.

Howdy! I’m addicted to b-ball at this time of year, too! NC State just beat VA, so they’ll play N. Carolina for the ACC Championship on Sat. nite … ESPN at 8:30. If you don’t have another one to watch, it should be a good game! 😍

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Anne – honestly, I flip from one game to another so I can watch as many as possible!! Sat nite – 8:30! I’ll be on board!

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Anne – it’s an exciting game!!!! I’m on my second beer – ha!

          1. Anne in NC

It sure is!! How about that State player who looks like a tank? He can really pass the ball, dang! I’m ready for a second beer myself!

          2. Mary Etherington Post author

Anne – I think his name was Benson? He’s a great player for such a big solid guy

          3. Anne in NC

Hey! Just watched them announce the Women’s tourney brackets on ESPN.
So y’all got Holy Cross … or as the lady announcer kept saying, “Holly Cross” … geez. Looks like Carolina & Carolina could play each other in their second games, that’d be very interesting.
I googled NC State’s supersize player, DJ Burns, Jr. That was one heckuva game last nite.
PS … I was very sorry to hear that you fell … hope you’re ok.

          4. Mary Etherington Post author

Anne – I’m trying to print out the brackets but not successful yet. I think my afternoon in the recliner has really helped. The black and blue bruises will change eventually. Yup, it was Burns who’s built like a linebacker!

  7. Martha W in WY

It sounds like the cards brought a little bit of joy and love into Lu’s life. I’ll keep her family in my prayers tonight. Hank is a hunk! I’m glad he has a furever home. Ella and Lucy will have wonderful memories of spending time on the farm with you. We are enjoying our last few days in AZ. Although, today and tonight we are getting rain. I’m sure Arizonians welcome any rain they can get.

  8. Sandy

Hi Mary, I’ve just been robbed! Stella, Luna and a couple of friends sold me some blackberry s, 3! So tomorrow l will make apple and blackberry crumble to sell to them with ice-cream for $2 each, haha! It’s great for kids to be outdoors playing with friends, l enjoy watching them having fun! Today l got the checkerboard quilt top together. Tomorrow pin it out and start quilting , so on track for the wedding deadline!Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sandy – Stella and Luna are smart girls! Haha!!! I’d love to sample your crumble –

My condolences to Lu’s family. May the good memories bring them comfort.

Love your Easter egg project with the kids.

Happy, Happy Birthday Connie. Have a joy-filled day.

  11. Diane in Colorado

My friend, Sharon, and I watched the 5th season of Unforgotten tonight. I was not a fan of the new “Boss” until near the end, but now think she will do! Such a good show!

My daughter and her boyfriend braved the snow and went up to Estes Park to attend Frozen Dead Guy Days. Their plan was to car camp in a dispersed USFS campground. Unplowed roads and 3-4 feet of snow stopped that idea and so they are back at my house (11 pm), setting up their tent in my basement—they are determined they will camp tonight despite the fact that there is a very comfortable bed just one room away. Kids!! They are making memories!!

    Happy Birthday to Connie!!! 🎉🥳🎂🎁🎈

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Diane – I’ve had to quit watching for a few days to watch basketball – I read your “story”. about the campers to Rick – we laughed!!! Kids, is right!!

So sorry to hear about Lu. Good to hear she enjoyed our cards.
    Happy Birthday, Connie!

  13. Lynette in Orlando

It’s heartwarming to know such a small gesture brought a bit of joy into Lu’s life. Thank you Mary for giving us such an opportunity to bless someone.

Love your basketball obsession — I’m the same way but NCAA football………

Wish I lived closer — I’d love to do some retail therapy with you. Think we’d have a blast!!!

  14. Gloria from CC

Happy Birthday Connie! I hope you have a wonderful day!🎂🍷💕
So sorry to hear about Lu. Prayers for her family.
My daffodils are starting to bloom and we saw our first robin yesterday. The sprinkler guy was here on Thursday to finalize the layout of the sprinkler heads around our house. Hopefully by the end of April we won’t have to worry about watering lawn/flower gardens any longer. Happy Saturday everyone!

  15. Laura VS

I’m with you, I rarely sit and watch TV. I have it on, but am busy doing other things. Back to the estate sale today, I’ll look for more Country Threads!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Laura – and that primitive oval stool and rush seat settee!!!gosh I wish I were there

  16. Kathy in western NY

How lucky Connie is to share her birthday with National Quilting Day but surely being in Padre Island isn’t making her miss quilting. I’m sure her cross stitch was more portable- Ha! Happy Birthday Connie!
Lots of retail sales at quilt shops around here today to celebrate.
I can vision the kids having fun on the golf cart like our grandkids always did as it was something different to drive around in. It’s nice you share your home, land and love of animals with young children today to pass that goodness on that goes with caring.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Kathy – these Lund kids are my pretend grandchildren – lots of things to explore on the farm compared to town. Yes, I’m sure Connie is well e

      1. Kathy

And those kids Mary love the fun you give them at their pretend grandma’s farm! We’ve seen so many kids come and go through our lives here too that weren’t ours but they always remember us if we see them in their adult lives now.

  17. Donna Jo

Happy birthday to Connie!🎂 You will have to celebrate together at a later date. Sorry to hear about Lu; glad she enjoyed the cards. I enjoy sending them. Looking forward to your flower garden quilt post. I love it when you have kids out to the farm. I didn’t grow up on a farm but my best friend did. So much fun milking their cow! Her mom was the best cook! It was like Sunday dinner every day and eating was my favorite part of the farm!☺️ Haven’t watched any basketball since Iowa’s big win!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Donna Jo – well, when March Madness starts and the girls will be playing again, you’ll want to watch Caitlin. They are a Number one seed but that’s no guarantee they’ll make it to the finals. Its my dream for them to beat South Carolina!!!

      1. Donna Jo

Mary, I will not miss any of Iowa’s games; will definitely watch March Madness! I thought you would want to see a rematch from last year; Iowa and LSU.

  18. Sunflower 🌻 from Michigan

Adding my condolences to Lu’s family and friends and I’m so glad we sent her cards .
Happy birthday to Connie. My cousin and I are visiting a quilt shop today for some retail therapy ! And going to lunch. I have a birthday party for my great niece later so busy fun day. She turns one.

  19. Tama

It sounds like the kids had a great day lined up. If I had a day at your place, i’d want to do all of that minus the Easter eggs and instead would hang out in your quilt shop then finally on your porch, not wanting the day to end. Mary, I think your blog is special! Thanks so much. It makes my days better.

  20. Joy in NW Iowa

Such fun with the girls! I got a kick out of Keeper staying very close to you! Your protector!
    Happy birthday to Connie!
Sad to hear Lu passed away. I’m happy we could make a day brighter with cards.
    Have a good weekend.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – Keeper is my constant companion and sleeps in the van during the day so he won’t miss going if I go. Ha!!

  21. Barbara Yarnell

Thanks for letting us know about Lu passing on. So glad that you shared her information and we were able to give her something to be happy about near the end of her life. Wish we could do that for all of them…
I’m looking forward to the Grandmothers flower garden post!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Barbara – do YOU know an elderly lady who could use some friendly cards?

      1. Barbara Yarnell

Yes, I believe I do know of someone. I’ll ask for permission to share the info and will get back to you. Thanks, Mary.

  22. Jan in Arizona

Prayers of comfort for Lu’s family. Thanks, Mary, for the opportunity to send the gift of caring to Lu.
    Happy Birthday, Connie!
Iowa State game last night – WOW! I’ll be tuning in today. Go Cyclones!

  23. Alice in SW Ohio

So sorry to hear of Lu’s passing. Sending cards is a perfect example of brightening someone’s day! Happy birthday to Connie! What a lovely place to celebrate your birthday! My son’s
birthday is tomorrow & the following week he will be having a knee replacement! He’s needed this done for 10 yrs! Have never gotten a good answer as to why he waited this long to do this!! Hank is absolutely adorable & looks right at home in his new momma’s arms! Sweet boy! Beautiful Spring day here! Loving our almost 70* day!!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Alice – I’ll bet I can answer why your son has waited10 years- HES A MAN! So stubborn.

  24. Jan Hebert

Aw, such a gorgeous pup Hank is! And big! I’m happy for Michele. Sorry about Lu’s passing, condolences to her family. And on a happier note, Happy Birthday to Connie! It’s in the 50’s here today. I picked a bunch of daffodils from the patch that grow close to the foundation of our house. They’re so pretty! Just over 8 weeks since my knee replacement. It’s doing so well, so happy I had it done! Jan in MA

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jan – I just came from a pharmacy where the guy ahead of me in line had braces on both knees because he didn’t want to do replacements + I think he’s nuts, don’t you?

      1. Susan K in Texas

My sister in law put off knee replacement surgery for too long. She needs ankle surgery but is putting that off too. If you wait too long the surgery is harder to recover from and other body parts break down from the strain of covering for the bad parts.
I had my two back surgeries because I knew if I didn’t do them, it would mean more repairs down the road.

      2. Jan Hebert

Mary – yes, I do! I cannot imagine doing both at once. I understand why they do it but Yikes! Brave people I guess! Jan in MA

  25. Tanya T. in Houston

Happy Birthday to Connie! Glad she is having some Padre Island fun! Hey, Connie, we have shopping here, too! And, it’s Quilt Shop Hop Across Texas in March and April… 🙂

  26. Diane in Maryland

Sympathies to Lu’s family and friends.

Happy birthday to Connie! Enjoy the day and your vacation!

Nice picture of you Mary and the girls! Got a kick out of Keeper in the picture!

  27. Susan K in Texas

Happy birthday to Connie! When she gets back you’ll have to go for retail therapy and belated birthday lunch.
Sorry to hear about Lu’s passing. I’m glad the cards cheered her up.
That puppy looks like lots of fun ahead. Training and playing and snuggles. 🥰
I went to the Dallas quilt show yesterday. Lots of wonderful quilts but the vendors were greatly reduced. I think the Texas shop hop probably kept some shops from coming. I was able to find some treasures I couldn’t do without though.
Today they’re unveiling the Mike Modano statue before the Stars hockey game. Of course it’s supposed to be raining. We’ve been season seat holders since ‘’99 so have watched a lot of games with him playing. So his statue will be next to the statue of Dirk Nowitzki near the arena – one basketball and one hockey.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Susan – I need to look these names up so I know what you’re talking anout

      1. Susan K in Texas

Mike Modano was born in Livonia Michigan and is considered the greatest American born hockey player. He’s been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto and has many records.
Dirk Nowitzki was with the Dallas Mavericks and he was outstanding. Since I don’t follow basketball much I don’t know a whole lot other than that he was from Germany and played for Dallas.
Both sides players did a lot for Dallas sports and for their respective sports in general.

  28. Gail in Ohio

My condolences – losing friends is hard.
Those girls look as though they were having a ball – such fun!
The tornadoes didn’t touch our little area, but there were severe thunderstorms. It did take down a couple of trees from the wood line behind us that will have to be cleaned up at some point. I was away from home and got to watch a lightning show for an hour as a storm moved about 2 miles north of where I was – storms fascinate me as long as I’m not in the middle of them. Unfortunately, several places in OH had major damage and lives were lost… so sad!
I am with you on the “closed captioning” – I very rarely just sit and watch tv. There is usually binding or cross-stitching in my lap. Gotta keep making progress! LOL!

  29. Betty Klosterman

For at least 60 years, I have listened to color TV! I’d vacuum during commercials. No wonder the vacuum switch bit the dust!! Too many commercials. And Mom and I wrote LETTERS to each other EVERY WEEK. She would send mine to the office so I could read it sooner. The postman would worry if her letter didn’t come on Wednesday. How times change.

We’re still waiting for moisture. The fire danger is extreme with the winds. The baseball size hail is nothing to fool around with. It can kill you.

Working at quilt tops, picking up the living room–it’s worse than when I started and other stuff. There is progress but only I can tell…..

Take care and enjoy every day no matter the weather.
    Betty in Rapid City

  30. Connie Tesene

Connie here… thanks for all of the Birthday Wishes!
Mary- retail therapy is desperately needed! I’ll be home soon🏡

  31. Kim from Wi

Happy Birthday to Connie, I know you are enjoying Padre Island. Its a great place to celebrate.
I was sorry read of Lu’s passing. I hope our cards brought her some joy. Hank is adorable and I bet he is going to be well loved by his new family. I recently traveled with my aunt from Mason City to the Calico Hutch Quilt shop. We had a lovely time, and it was a new shop for me. We both found some nice items to bring home and so many samples, left us feeling inspired. Now I need to get my space cleaned up so I can work on my new project.
