Game! 9-8-24

This is how I watched the Fever game while entertaining Hazel and Keeper – throwing sticks and driving the wilderness trail with my IPad in the golf cart – and a win in OT! So exciting!

And tonight’s first Sunday Night Football also went into OT with Detroit coming out the winner.

Hi Mary, just sent you a photo of my brother’s dog Eileen, sitting in her basket at the front of his bicycle watching the soap box derby near his apartment. She is wearing her bonnet to protect her from the sun! I couldn’t work out how to send the photo and explanation on the same page, technically challenged unfortunately! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

Love your view while watching the game. Nice to take advantage of the nice weather while it lasts. We continue to have the yard work done, hopefully they will finish this week and we can spend our days watching the grass grow. Our daughter came over on Saturday and helped me put the shelving together in my quilting space. Its the first step in being able to set it up. We went to her place on Sunday and marked trees for trimming this winter (oaks are trimmed early winter to stop Oak Wilt) and helped her mount two hose reels in her yard. Work seems easier if you have some help getting it done.

Mary, your flowers are a site to behold! Your yards are just as pretty.
I’ve been working and working getting my place updated so it’s not so hard to maintain. The yard guys came and replaced the grass barrier so I don’t have to pull so many weeds. They cut down dead trees, and will saw off the dead branches this winter from the windbreak pines. I think there’s about 700 trees that need trimming. I spent another weekend “picking up, sorting through, putting in place and throwing away”.
Our weather has been just perfect, 80’s most of the time. Tiny breeze. Because I’m getting rid of so many obstacles, dead wood, scrap metal, autos, tractors, man stuff, my neighbor came over and mowed and mowed. Around the barn, garden, tree rows. He loves to mow, it’s his down time. I’m ok with that.

    Have a great week everyone.

Jo – 700 trees to be trimmed? And you’re going to do it? I have two in front of the house and I’m putting that off! I need to get the sun into my piano room and front room for the plants that will move into those areas. Rick has a long handled trimmer that I’m going to see if I can handle. Hey – I just had a thought. Could you offer those trees to someone who needs/wants firewood? Tell them they can have it if they take the tree down.

Jo – and readers in general. The only flowers I have on this whole farm are those hydrangeas. I don’t even try to grow flowers – I don’t have the patience but those hydrangeas grow here like weeds. Don’t ask me how because I don’t know. I don’t even water them when it gets dry. So please don’t give me any credit for being any kind of gardener because I’m not. All that clean up around your place will make you feel like a new woman. When I moved in here in 1979 there was garbage and junk everywhere. It took me years of work but now it would be move-in ready if I were to sell. The buyer wouldn’t have to do a thing but maintain. It will kill me if the next owner lets it go to shit again.

Keeper plays with his babies the same way our springer does, on his back holding his toy with his hands. Sometimes he’ll give it a flick and send it flying so he can pounce on it. I love watching him entertain himself. Cracks me up

  5. Hank's Mom

Keeper looks like he’s enjoying himself immensely. I love seeing a big dog so relaxed that they are on their back. Plus holding a toy with their front paws is always cute. 🙂

Hank’s mom – pretty soon Hank can do that. Since everybody here knows and loves Hank maybe you should leave a comment to explain his recent surgery. If you want to…..

What a nice way to watch a game and keep your dogs entertained. I went away this past weekend and visited a friend, I ended up staying away an extra day with my aunt (she’s only 6 years older than I am) we are so close in age and she is a quilter as well. I had a great time. Both my friend and my aunt live about a 4.5 hr drive away. Not too far but in the winter I don’t go there because the road can be treacherous as it crosses over a very high mountain pass that gets loads of snow. I had a great visit with both of them.

Mary, you had a perfect Sunday afternoon!
I want to thank everyone for the kind words about the placemats. Someone wanted the pattern. There are many patterns available but here are rough details about the ones I have been making and what works for me.
    PLACEMATS
    1 front 12” x 17”
    1 back 13” x18”
    1 light weight batting 13” x 18”(quilting or flannel)
Place front on back RST and both on batting. ( I cut the back and batting larger because then I don’t have to spend time pinning together.)
Sew 1/4” seam around edges and leave 4” opening . Trim back and batting seam to 1/4”. I use a quilting ruler and rotary cutter. Turn, poke corners out and press well. Top stitch around the edge. Sometimes I do some stitch in the ditch to anchor the layers. PRESS well to make it as flat as possible. I use washable fabrics and do not use binding because the extra thickness might cause the glass to tip over. Of course, the size of the mats can vary a bit.
It is a wonderful way to use those extra blocks and fabric scraps, be CREATIVE, and brighten someone’s day. ENJOY! Have a great week!

Thanks so much for this information. It is a nice way to use fabric and do a small project when time is limited. Plus, the cheery benefit is such a plus. I loved the placemats you shared. You have definitely been busy!

And I thought I was multi tasking when I was sewing and listening to an audio book! Ha! Way to go, Mary! As far as college football, we live in CT and have 3 UCONN alumni so we are Husky fans. First and foremost woman’s basketball is our favorite but support all the UCONN teams. Enjoy your day!

Mary, You sure have it nice to be able to see the game no matter where you are – love it. Our city had their yearly late summer festival. It’s nice but we don’t get too excited about it anymore other than eating at the Boy Scout tent to support them a little. The nice thing is that my step-son was the grand marshall in the parade (he has worked for the city for about 25 years). We weren’t too sure what to do so I had the family come for a outdoor get-together and simple small dinner. My step-daughter, as always, saved the day by making 3 salads and several bars for desert. She loves to cook and I’m getting too tired to take on a lot of entertaining. It worked out perfect as we don’t get together often enough and the weather was perfect with temps. in the 70’s and a breeze to keep bugs down. The Minnesota Twins lost but the Vikings won so that’s that.
Today, I go to my quilting group at our church. We’ve been doing this twice a month for over 25 years and love it. We just bring hand projects to work on but it’s nice if you have a big quilt to pin, we have the tables to use. That’s all for now. Have a great week ahead everyone.
