Gardens and Quilts, 8-24-25

Garden pictures from Cynthia:

Quilts from Bonnie

From Jeannie

On our way home today we came upon this eagle feasting on a roadkill raccoon – he let us drive up next to him!
FYI

The last week has been nearly overwhelming – tomorrow I return to the mower. 😊

…………………….

An 8-year-old girl went to her dad, who was working in the yard. She asked him, “Daddy, what is sex?” The father was surprised that she would ask such a question, but decides that if she is old enough to ask the question, then she is old enough to get a straight answer. He proceeded to tell her all about the “birds and the bees.” When he finished explaining, the little girl was looking at him with her mouth hanging open. The father asked her, “Why did you ask this question?” The little girl replied, “Mom told me to tell you that dinner would be ready in just a couple of secs.”

Yes, this last week and especially today have been overwhelming here also. My routine mammogram detected calcium deposits, so I had a diagnostic mammogram today. Now I need a biopsy. My Cologuard test came back positive, so now I need to schedule a colonoscopy. I’m suppose to meet my sons next Friday and fly to Washington for a week of hiking in Olympic National Park. But today, I received a text message from my neighbor across the milo fields that has devastated my world. Seems the state government in their infinite wisdom is going to run an alternate highway through my property and hers within the next ten years. I am so upset. Y’all please pray for my family’s future. Thank you for letting me vent.

Paula, that is lots of unsettling news right before a vacation.

Will keep you in our prayers.

Paula – oh, heavens! Can the state just take your land to do that? I would be so upset and mad! And your test results – take a deep breath – there might not be a thing wrong – test results alert one to many things and it just makes you be aware that more tests are needed. We’ll all be thinking of you, Paula, and saying a prayer in your behalf. Please keep us updated so we don’t have to wonder if we should ask.

        Lynn and Mary,
        Thank you.
        Mary,
they have to pay you fair market value for the property and house. If not, we’d hire an eminent domain lawyer if necessary.

I am still chuckling after reading the joke this morning. Laughed at the keesh ones too.
Cynthia, your garden is stunning. I love the bench idea. I sit more and more these days and would love to sit there and admire your flowers.
Mary, I sent you some photos but I forgot the rules until after I sent them. I am rusty now after all my (old) phone frustrations. I got a new one now and it is so much easier. So, I will try again and this time I will put my name on them. I really want everyone to see my blue, blue hydrangea.
    Have a good mowing day….

Sue – oh, I really want to see your blue hydrangea!! No rules actually – just helpful suggestions so everybody knows who sent the pictures

So nice to see the pictures! The joke was a hoot. I remember someone telling me about how her daughter pronounced “quiche” as “quickie” during a conversation and raising some eyebrows.

There is a joke about a farmer that went to a diner with a friend. He couldn’t understand why the waitress slapped him after he placed his order. His friend looked at him and said, “You fool, it’s pronounced ‘keesh’ not quickie!”

Great quilts and gardens. Always enjoy reading the blog and all the comments. Were having well above seasonal temperatures for the last two days temps have been above 90F. We still have two more days of this. So glad my mom got air conditioning a few years ago. Have a wonderful day everyone.

You said the movers were very impressed with the boxes you had filled and were ready to move. Were they supposed to pack your things into the boxes and you had it all done for them? I’m just curious. Betty in Rapid City

I never tire of every day looking at the wonderful pictures shared here. Sure is so much better than turning on the tv. Love Cynthia’s gardens. I’d sit out and admire them too if I were her. The quilts look so cozy especially on this cooler day here. But we finally got some rain so I won’t complain. Even had a tornado warning here ! That’s a first. People have never had to figure out where to go here so came up with the bathhouse but I’d probably head to the farmers market across the street as it’s closer.

That eagle is gorgeous 😍 can’t believe “he” let you get so close for a picture!

    Laughed at the joke 🤣

Kelli – he must have been really hungry and wanted that roadkill badly – he did finally swoop away but flew low and as we drove away he circled and landed again. I wanted to scoot the roadkill into the ditch so he wouldn’t get hit possibly but other cars were coming.

Love all the beautiful colorful quilts. We are having a wonderful cool morning here. Tom dug all of the potatoes out of the garden on Saturday & I got all of my sauerkraut canned. Not much sewing going on here since yard & garden take priority. What a great picture of that eagle. One of my old coworkers was fishing out at the lake & he saw an eagle dive down & catch a large fish.

Des – no sewing here either because I’ve had such a busy weekend but today I HAVE to mow – I’ll need long pants and a sweatshirt!

Beautiful quilts and a lovely garden! Amazing how huge that eagle looks. Do you see many in your area? I always find it exciting when I see one. There are two eagle nests very close to my parents’ farm and my brother reports seeing the eagles daily just about.
Our weather is supposed to be cooler this week and I am loving it! Back into the garden for me. Starting fall cleanup.
I did take 3 finished quilt tops to my long arm quilter last week so will have bindings soon to finish. I enjoy that part too!
Disappointed in the Fever game last night. Wish Caitlin was back playing!
The blog has been so entertaining lately! Have a great week. Im off to my sister’s beach cottage tomorrow for a few days of fun. 🌻

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sunflower – I wish I were going to the beach house with you! I have lots of work to do in the next two weeks. The Fever isn’t much fun to watch anymore, is it? I wonder if C feels guilty – probably and she shouldn’t of course. I looked forward to this season all spring just waiting and it’s been very disappointing – for them, too.

Loved the garden photos. And the quilts-nice! The shirt quilt is right up my alley. Jeannie’s carpet and shoes look just like my carpet and shoes. 😳😄

I bet those youngsters enjoyed driving the golf cart up the lane and around the farm. Mary, you must of made an impact on the parents when they were youngster for them to bring their children to the farm. Fond memories they wanted their children to have and to meet the lady who was a fun neighbor. Wonderful quilts tonight and Cynthia your garden is gorgeous.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Kim – I was very fond of their dad, of course, but it was the kids that kept me hanging in there for nearly 5 years. I watched them grow up and yes, I see these visits as the extreme compliment! The kids have such a great time – on the golf cart that I bought from their dad over 32 years ago! Isn’t that something? Ha! And the grandkids know it was his as well. I wish they didn’t live so far away.

Your backyard flower beds are lovely, Cynthia. Now you need a nice screened in porch like Mary’s so you can sit inside and enjoy all your hard work. The quilts tonight with their pastel colors look so soft and homey. Just had a proceedure done at the hospital on Friday morning and came down with a bad head cold last night , coughing and runny nose that won’t stop. Could I have picked up the germs that fast? Your company, the kids and puppies all look like they had a fun time with the golf cart and the open spaces. What a fun place to come visit. You have a special way with kids, Mary.

Jeanne – yup, if you want to “catch” something just go to the hospital! Ugh. Yes, I love these kids like they were my own.

    2. Li

Jeanne, yes. About three days is all that it takes. Viruses can run a stressed body down quickly. Really hope that you feel better soon.
