Golden Anniversary, 4-28-23

Tom and Becky’s backyard wedding 50 years ago today

I’m in the pink dress and Tom’s good friend, Greg, was best man.

How could this be 50 years ago?

And tonight at the restaurant:

I wish I had taken a picture of Rick’s 18 oz ribeye – it looked like a roast!

We ate at the Branding Iron in Thompson, IA – a popular place to eat a great steak if you live in North Iowa or Southern Minnesota.

Happy 50th Anniversary, Tom and Becky!

Awww these pictures are just so sweet and what a wonderful way to share their special anniversary eating a nice dinner together. Congratulations Becky and Tom and blessings for healthy years together ahead. Family is everything important when moments like this come along.

Wow, how exciting to celebrate 50 years together. That doesn’t happen very often.
    Congratulations to both.

Happy 50th anniversary! When my husband and I had our 50th two years ago, we wondered where the years went, too. Great pictures to document the time. We had a small dinner with 16 in town family members to help us celebrate. Sure wish my Dad and Mom had been there, but knew they were smiling down from Heaven. We celebrated at our favorite Mexican restaurant that my Mom often chose for her birthday meal with us.

Congratulations to Tom and Becky! My auntie Joan is 100 tomorrow, first in family to reach that milestone!
Just back from my fabulous trip to Norfork Island, need time to recover, a beautiful island with dark history of 2 convict settlement periods and descendants from mutiny of the Bounty sailing vessel living there for the past 150 years. Now trying to catch up with emails etc.Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

It’s funny how people now don’t seem as old as people at the same age did when I was a kid. I think it’s because they listen to a lot of the same music as younger people, wear their hair somewhat the same, still wear blue jeans, etc. Compare that to the huge gap between grandparents and grandkids when my own grandparents had their 50th–bless their hearts, my grandparents looked nothing like your two cuties! I’m sending my congratulations. Thanks for sharing the photos. Where does the time go? I just turned 59 and can hardly believe it, although I keep saying I’m sixty already, so I guess I’ve adjusted…

Beth, I was just thinking about this morning, before I read this newsletter. i can’t believe I will be 75 this summer. I still get together with some high school friends when I am back in my hometown and I never think of us as “old ladies”. Just before my 60th birthday, a friend who had already reached that milestone said when she thought it sounded so much better to say “i’m in my early 60’s” instead of “I’m in my late 50’s”. We laughed and laughed..denial is our friend!!!!

Happy 50th wedding anniversary Becky en Tom! 💞 Congratulations!
Thank you for sharing the great wedding photos! Took me straight back to the seventies!

  9. Gloria from CC

    Happy Anniversary Becky and Tom.🎉
I’m always amazed when I see a picture of Becky how much she looks like Mary. You could be twins!

Jenee – you’re welcome! When you asked to see the photo album, I knew it was a good idea to search for those pictures – haha!

Happy 50th! It’s quite a mile stone in this day and age. I absolutely love the pictures those are from my era.

Our 50th is in August, hard to imagine a half century… saying that makes me feel old as dirt! We’re celebrating in June, we reserved three king rooms at a National Historic Registry inn near Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural masterpiece. Luray Caverns is nearby (I hate caves). Our sons and their wives are meeting us there for two nights. We have a tour of Fallingwater arranged, and there’s a free day for them to bike, hike, go “spelunking” in the caves without me, or white water raft. I believe a few of these are not recommended for senior citizens. I would not have gone in a cave or in a raft in a wild river when I was young, sure not going now! I’ll be looking for a quilt shop or book store, ha!

Carol – now your celebration sounds like the party I expect people to have when they’ve been married for 50 years!

  14. Jeanine from Iowa

Congratulation to Tom and Becky. May you have many more happy years together. We will have our 55th anniversary on June 1. Our daughter and family from ND will be here, but our son in OH cannot come this time. It gets more difficult to get together the older the grandchildren get and the more jobs, etc. are involved. We don’t do anything special. It’s just special to have family here as we aren’t together that much anymore. The sun is shining this morning, but we didn’t get any rain yesterday, and we really need it in our area. Thanks for the pictures, Mary.

What great pictures. I love the simplicity of weddings during that period. The pictures remind me of my own wedding.

  16. Sunflower from Michigan

Congratulations to Becky and Tom. Well done. How hair styles and clothing change!
We have cloudy and rainy weather today in southeast Michigan. I’m determined to move some of my plants/flowers into the greenhouse.
I’ll be glad to get rid of these April showers so my May flowers can grow. Bring on the sunshine!!
Can finally take the grand dog, Biscuit, for longer walks starting today. He got the fixed last week and doesn’t have to wear the cone anymore. He’ll be relieved.
    Have a great day, Mary!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sunflower – I know he’ll enjoy that walk without a cone. Can’t imagine why a male dog that had been neutered would need a cone. You have a greenhouse? Oh, I’m jealous.

Happy 50th Tom and Becky! I love that the 4 of you live close enough together to help each other out and celebrate these milestones. Unfortunately, my sister lives in Minnesota, and I live in Arizona.

Aren’t old pictures something? Oh, how the years change us.

Keep celebrating for at least 50 days .

Great pictures! Happy Anniversary Becky and Tom! Love reading the comments. Sandy, your trip to Norfork Island sounds amazing! I’ll have to research that island. And Carol at Pin Oak – wow! That will be a great celebration! My husband would absolutely love to see Fallingwater. He studied FLW in college, was fascinated with his designs. Supposed to rain here for the next few days, ugh! It’s been so rainy this spring but it’s better than the snow that a lot of you are experiencing! Maybe I’ll get my sewing room organized, that would be a positive! Jan in MA

HAPPY 50th Becky and Tom:) Here’s to many more. I agree, they look like it could be their 25th:) I love how many of us have those little square phots from 50 years ago:) It looked like April in Iowa was good weather on that date. Nice.
We had our 50th in 2019, luckily before the Pandemic. The Out of towners (NY,CT, MI, MA etc) did not want to come to Ohio in December so we had a family party in June for them and a friends party in December. They both were fun and it worked great b/c we could concentrate on just the family in June. Some played golf with hubby, some went to the Columbus Zoo, some came here for lunch and then we all went to a special dinner at the former Longaberger golf club. FUN times!

  20. Janice Brown

Congratulations Becky and Tom on the 50 year milestone. May there be many more. Becky, in your younger days you look just like your daughter.

  21. Kathy Hanson

Congratulations Tom and Becky…they must have been very young as they look very young now for being married 50 years!!!

  22. Joy in NW Iowa

Happy Anniversary! May you be blessed with many more! Yes, I agree with the statement “where did those years go”?
We need rain also. The wind sounds like a hurricane again. It started last evening and it’ll be here another couple days! Ugh! We planted potatoes April 14 and the soil still is t warm enough to sprout anything. 47 degrees. But, the guys are planting corn….it’s suppose to be in the 70s this week.
    Have a good one!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – well, I know it won’t be a raking day outside! Maybe it should be a cleaning day?

There is a Branding Iron Supper Club in Preston, MN. Our family loved to go there. My 94 yo mom still loves to go and have walleye pike with a brandy water. hahaha
