A few farm pictures –

I took this last night as the automatic light was still on in front of the quilt shop and I hadn’t taken down the quilt.

Hank visited this afternoon.

Oh, he does like the cats!!

Now this is a thick part of the grove!

I’d recognize that butt anywhere!

ENOUGH WITH THE DOGS!!

Time to wash some rugs – twined rugs never wear out. The warp inside might get weak and rot away with water and sun but you can wear through them with use. I really need to make a few more.

Hi Mary an update on my Sew Scrappy Quilt it’s now done and quilted with

Daisys all over. I don’t have a long arm so I use Press N Seal available at the Local Grocery Store. I draw my design on parchment paper first, then the press n seal won’t stick

To the parchment paper. I then lay my parchment design on my quilt. Cover it with the press n seal then copy my design with a permanent felt pen. I suggest to test out your felt pen first as some are not permanent then it will transfer on to your quilt.. Then take out the parchment paper design and lay the press n seal design on your quilt where you want. I do the quilt design in small areas.  I use my quilting foot and sew on the lines. I usually sit and pull off the press seal when I’m watching a program… VOILA and it’s done.

I printed Maggie’s quilting directions in case anyone might be interested in trying her method.

It’s late – The Fever won the Commissioner’s Cup tonight when they defeated the Minnesota Lynx. And they did it without Caitlin, too.

Watching the game with friends:

Will somebody explain this fashion trend to me – tucking in just the front of the blouse! Why? To see the belt buckle maybe? I do not know.

And in the end there’s this –

  1. Mary Says Sew!

A quilting friend’s daughters came to her one and day and said they were taking her shopping. They were tired of seeing the same black and white striped shirt she wore to every wedding, birthday, retirement, reunion, memorial and funeral for the last 30 years. The “girls” were right! The shirt’s distinctive – the stripes run horizontally in one section and vertically in the rest of the shirt, and stand out in photos.

I’m at the point in my life if I can’t order it from L.L. Bean or buy it at Tractor Supply or Walmart, I don’t need it. Although i do go to Penneys in the nearest “big city” to buy bras, about once a decade. When I find a style that works, I order duplicates online when they’re on sale. i do the same thing with jeans.

Mary Says Sew – I buy most everything except chore clothes from JJILL – I know how they’ll fit and can order online.

Hi to All! Mary, your pic with the quilt shop is gorgeous! It looks like a painting. I love your twined rugs. That must have been a really big frame. I’ve made several using your instructions but much smaller. It looks like your cats are used to having Hank around too. Animals are so precious. 😍
Thanks everyone for all the quilt pics today. The machine quilting instructions seem very clear. I will try this on a wallhanging. Take care everyone and stay cool!

  3. Doris

Happy birthday tomorrow Mary!! I love the pictures of your beautiful place! The first picture is absolutely beautiful! I read your blog every day but don’t comment much. I’m trying to get all of the quilts done that I have promised to people so I can slow down! Hope you have a great day tomorrow!

  4. Pat Williams

Lots of beautiful pictures & quilts. Thanks for letting us know about Patti. Hopefully Mr. Ed will stay in touch. The porch swing quilt is so pretty. Is that pattern still available? Pat in Iowa City

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Pat – yes, Porch Swing is available – same price and all. $5, SASE, check made out to Mary Etherington or cash

  5. Meredith in Cincinnati

Loved watching the Fever game, and so glad they won. That’s a lot of money! I’m eager to see Caitlin playback again, but winning without her was a good sign for the team.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

      Meredith – yes, what a good sign! I don’t think she’s playing tonight either.☹️

  6. Carolyn Rector of Ohio

Lovely pictures. The dogs are lucky when Hank come to visit!
I kept looking at the red and white quikt. Is it two different quilt blocks sewn up in a new type of quilt. I think that is what it is. Each quilt block uses a pinwheel in the center? I love that kind of quilt.
Interesting use of press n seal. Good explanation. Thank you for sharing.

  7. Susan K in Iowa (Texas)

Thanks for sharing Maggie’s quilting instructions. It sounds like a great idea.
I like the two color quilts but the basket quilt is my favorite. Such pretty colors.
We are in Iowa currently. I got out my machine to fix some curtain panels. When I went to find my sewing tools I found none! They were put aside for a “next trip” since the car was too full when I brought up a machine and some fabric. I went to Walmart and got some sewing essentials. Next trip the sewing tools will for sure get packed into the car!
The cats are starting to settle in although they’re not fond of the grandsons coming over to play. They have places to hide so are safe. I don’t know if I told you but Magnus got out of his harness and ran under the car. We were at the amish store in Lamoni and I needed to give them another dose of their calming medication. Thank goodness he finally came over to me so I could grab him. Both of us were pretty shook up. Adjustments will be made for the trip home so it doesn’t happen again. Klaus basically cried most of the way so it made for a long drive. Hubby isn’t as patient with the cats as I am so I was more worried about his state of mind.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Susan – oh, poor Magnus! It’s a crate from now on!!! But crates take up room – maybe you can put your box of sewing tools in the crate with him!!! Haha!

  8. Candy

Wow! The quilt shop looks so inviting in the picture you took. It reminds me of a similar one you posted in December, with the moon behind a tree in front of the quilt shop … everything had that same green glow. I saved that photo just to enjoy from time to time… and I’ll save this one too. Great photography! Hank sure looks like a grown-up dog now … no longer a puppy! Does Hazel hop into that pail by herself? So cute!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Candy – yup, Hazel heads for that tub as soon as we get back from the hot trip to the field. Keeper won’t get in the water at all – he’s gonna be hot all summer! Black fur and no water.

  9. Vicki in Seattle

Mary, the photos are great, especially the first one of the quilt shop! All the photos of the farm,
animals and quilts are a treat! Have a good day before your birthday!!!💜

  10. Sandy

Hi Mary, happy birthday 🎂! It’s the 3rd July in New Zealand, we are about 17 hours ahead of you, enjoy your special day! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

  11. Barbara (in MO)

Hi all! Love the quilt photos today: especially the blue and white triangles quilt and the brown and pink baskets – outstanding. I saved the picture of the basket quilt to make it myself, I love it that much. Also, Marie C. shared some lovely quilts a few days ago that I really liked.
I was sorry to hear of Patti’s passing, although I was sure that she must have. She was such a prolific quilter and I have several of her quilt photos saved on my phone. Think its time that I make one of those in her memory.

  12. Kathy in western NY

Thank you Maggie for providing good details on machine quilting. I should attempt it on a small quilt and see how it goes. I tend to go back to my usual straight lines, stitch in the ditch and squiggle lines but I tell myself to break out of my frame of mind.
I’m wishing and praying for Kim in WI when she has surgery mid month for kidney cancer. Keep us posted Kim on how you are doing. You’ve got a good attitude going into this ordeal.
Every birthday is a gift in my opinion as we get older so make it a good day tomorrow Mary!

I have the same question about the tucked in shirt. As Betty mentioned, not a fashion statement if one wants to hide a belly. Must be like that fashion craze when ladies wore their collars up. Didn’t last long. This too shall pass.
The farm pictures are beautiful. And, always like seeing what the animals are up to.

  14. Diane, Squeak, and Buddy in Central Ohio

The picture of the quilt shop with the Coxcomb quilt could be a greeting card. I love it. Do the cats like Hank as much as he likes them? Or Irish Setter loved the cats and they loved him. Cute butt:)
Hot here again–91*. It took me 4 days, but I cleaned up most of the sewing room. Whew. I love it, though.
NOthing much going on except weather and quilting:) HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOMORROW, MARY!!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Diane – thank you! Isn’t a clean sewing room about the best treat in the whole world? Ha!

  15. Des

That first picture of the shop with the vivid greens is stunning. At first glance I thought it was a painting. Love seeing those pets busy as bees on the farm. And I do appreciate seeing a terrier butt. I share your pet peeve with the tucked in front shirts-ridiculous. I have a load of laundry drying on the clothesline & it’s time to unpin & fold. It doesn’t really seem like doing laundry if I do it outside.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Des – the next time I do sheets I’m hanging them on the line!

  16. Betty Klosterman in Rapid City

Seems like I read the ‘tucking the blouse inside the pants on the front and leave it hanging out on the back’ came from Europe….. The thing I do know if you (me) have a pot belly, it looks horrible. But the belly never helps one’s appearance! So much for old age?

When I went to our Project Warmth work day Monday, I wore an old shirt over my knit shirt in case it was chilly. The shirt was a made of 4 different pink plaids and stripes. It was a group of blue and pink shirts, slacks, etc and I had almost everything in the group of clothing. Everybody thought it was great, to my answer it was old. When I got home I noticed the short sleeve shirt of the set in a picture that was taken 30 years ago!!!!! Guess I really do wear my clothes til they fall off me. Wish I had got 2 of everything?

And we have a resident deer and I bet he’d really like to find his way out. He is beautiful with velvet antlers and very nice coat. He doesn’t seem to be bothered by humans.

Meanwhile to pick up the living room, again. Seems like it gets worse every time I try to get it all picked up. I’d rather quilt. My S-I-L’s quilt is finished and delivered. Back to the fun stuff and staying inside when it is hot. Wait for the shade to water the outside flowers.

We are now hearing stories of June 28 tornadoes. Kadoka and Watertown areas got it hard. Watertown area (Gary, SD) is where the wiggly funnel hit. One policeman had his windshield broken by a hail the size of a grapefruit! Wow. The storm chasers were out in force and got great pictures. Glad I’m in the western part of SD.
Stay cool, fall isn’t very far away. Betty in Rapid City.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Betty – I saw the wiggly tornado – fascinating! I, too, have a belly and wouldn’t ever wear my blouse tucked in only in the front!

    2. Betty Klosterman

P.S. I got to thinking about the shirt in the picture and couldn’t remember throwing it away. Looked in the closet and there it was all pressed and ready to wear!!! And I liked that shirt, too.

  17. Helen

ps your pictures of the farm late in the afternoon light are just beautiful! Great photography!

  18. Helen

So love reading your blog daily. Having a few health issues so haven’t commented in a long while.
So agree with the fashion question! I’ve been asking that a while….why tuck in just the front??? Absurd! Most fashion trends are!! Not a fan. Love your blog and quilting ideas. Thanks for sharing your country threads life with us! God bless you!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Helen – I hope your health issues are minor and we hear from you on a regular basis!

  19. Deb in Idaho

Mary, I so enjoyed the blog today. It’s so hot here in Idaho, I have to go out early to water then in the house. I hate hot weather. I harvested some garlic but will finish the rest later in the week. I love Maggie’s explanation for quilting on a regular sewing machine. I know you said how you make rugs but can you explain it again or what book it’s in. I think I will have to try my hand at it.
