Let’s start with patriotic quilts!

Look at this extraordinarily long walnut branch! Oh, I hope it doesn’t break off! And you can’t even see the other end!
Ditch lilies
Viburnum
Annabelle hydrangeas except for the pink one at the end – Connie gave it to me as a memorial for Carly, our beloved black dog from long ago.

A finish!! Crossroads!

The return address said HSG. I texted Michele and said “I didn’t know Hank had a middle name! What is it?” She answered “Ster……as in Hank-ster!” Hahahaha!!!! I loved it – oh, Hankster!

Happy birthday Mary! You share a birthday with our 23 year old grandson, we were able to celebrate with him today.
    It is really hot today!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – it’s a guarantee – always hot on my birthday. Remember those old oscillating fans about 12” high, sorta gray/tan? When Mom was in the hospital having me that’s what dad brought her – no AC of course! She finally gave it away to friends in TX – and I was so sad she didnt give it to me. That’s all she had for cooling 77 years ago.

Happy Birthday, Mary! Double 7’s! Loved all the photos today and especially the ones of your yard. It is so rewarding to be able to look upon one’s yard after you have mowed! Pastoral.

Happy Birthday, Mary!! I hope you are having a wonderful day!!
The pictures of your farm are just beautiful. I can’t wait to read your blog every day. The weather here has been nice….in the 70’s. Great weather for deadheading my flowers. Where are my grandkids when I have a job for them?

  4. Sandy

Happy Birthday, Mary! I hope you can take the day to enjoy some of your favorite’ ‘iced tea’, and do whatever you want to do! I love your little Crossroads quilt with the spiral quilting. Have a fun day!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Candy – did you see I wimped out on Crossroads and didnt make the triangle squares! Haha!

      1. Candy

I would have done the same… too much work! And besides … you don’t want to distract from that spiral quilting. Good for you!

  7. Jo in Wyoming

Happy, happy birthday to you, I hope you get to enjoy some “ice tea” and a pizza with Becky and Tom. Do you still go downtown on Friday nights?
Your pictures and flowers are incredible.
Miss Hazel has a middle name. Hank is a BIG dog and can handle a big name.

    Jamie Valimont

    Hope this helps.

Connie – thank you! I don’t know how you guys find these things! Is there some kind of search button on the blog?

      1. Connie R.

I went on internet and typed in “Country Threads Jamie” and it came up to the blog from December.
        I was surprised too.

Happy Birthday , Mary. Enjoy your day on the farm. Porch sits and a nice long cool drink. Love your updated crossroad quilt. Pretty.
Doing some uncluttering this morning. Oh, how I hate junk mail!! Try to toss it quickly but somehow it piles up. All the appeals for money!!!

Happy Birthday, dear Mary! As I say to all my friends: do something fun today and have something yummy to eat! Maybe you’ll need to extend your birthday long enough to make a Heath Bar cake…

I recently got some quilt hanging rods, and at long last hung a couple of my quilts. Poor things have been waiting 25 years to be hung!

  11. Marty Potter

Happy Birthday to you, Mary! Have the bestest day ever! Do all your favs, like going on the wilderness trail with the dogs and most of all, quilt! You could still make the Heath Bar cake because really, who cares of it’s late?

  12. Helen

Happy Birthday dear Mary! I hope you have a wonderful day and many more years of pleasure on your beautiful farm! thank you for sharing your farm life with all of us. God bless you and yours!

  13. Des

Happy Birthday Mary! I hope Rick put some beer in the fridge to chill so you can celebrate by sitting on your porch & enjoying the farm. My Dad’s birthday was on the 3rd also & he was a red, white & blue patriotic veteran. Every year he would plant tons of flowers around our town war memorial. We always tried to get red, white & blue flowers. Red & white petunias were easy but getting some blue plants was tricky. Hazel looks like a princess under those white hydrangeas.

  14. Vicki in Seattle

Sending many “Birthday Wishes” to you, Mary!
What is your favorite cake? Hope you get one!
Put your feet up and enjoy your cards and e-mail greetings!🎂🇺🇸🎶🎂🇺🇸🎶🎂🇺🇸🎶

Vicki – thanks! My favorite cake is Country Threads Heath Bar cake and can you believe that I simply forgot to make it? Old age is definitely showing!

  15. Brenda Ks.

    Happy Birthday Mary.
Tried to comment on the picture of the quilt shop yesterday but it didn’t want to corporate. That picture reminded me of the many times at quilt camp sewing at night and you could always see the light on the shop from the barn. Beautiful memories. Have a wonderful day.

Happy Birthday Mary! Love your blog and all the pictures! Hank is special, isn’t he?

Happy Birthday to you and love to you and all the beautiful animals that are in your life. I love all the photos and quilts, as well. Thank you so much for your blog. It gives me joy to read it every time you post.

    Happy Birthday Mary!

I enjoyed the eye candy this morning with my coffee. Your yard is so pretty. I would be on my deck drinking coffee this morning if the floor boards were in. 70 and everything is so green in the morning sunshine. I live in the “city” now and my view is not that great.

    Happy 4th to all!

  21. Janice

Mary, reading this on June 3rd . . . so Happy Birthday. May you have a great day and a great year! Thank you for including photos of your property. So lush, and peaceful. I like the Crossroads pattern in the new colorway. Janice Traverse City area

  22. Arlene in Colorado

    Happy Birthday dear Mary!
Having a birthday next to a holiday is an event we must put up with each year of our lives!!! Have a wonderful time doing something just for yourself! Your walnut tree is amazing!! Do the squirrels get most of the nuts? I’m sure your little Hazel keeps them at bay. Everything is so green in your yard, so Midwestern and how I miss that after living in Wisconsin the first half of my life…
May you have many, many more birthdays with those who love you dearly!

  23. Sheryl Harrison

Happy birthday, Mary! The picture of Hazel and the hydrangeas would make a great puzzle.

Happy Happy Birthday Mary! Have a wonderful day and weekend celebrating! 🎁
I’m off to the guild meeting shortly. I’m taking the finished bullseye quilt for show. Along with several charity pieces that I’ve sent pictures of recently.
No real plans for the 4th. We’ll have a cookout with family and stay home after. No need to hunt down firework displays. Several neighbors blast off around us!
    Stay safe everyone.

  27. Rita in Iowa

Happy Birthday Mary. May you have a wonderful day followed by some cold ice tea. Your Crossroads quilt is lovely.
The quilts and arrangements are just what we need this time of the year. Thanks to all for sharing.
Love all the pictures of your yard and flowers Mary. So much work but it’s so nice to look out and see all the beauty.
Looked at the camera feed for last night and had a coyote pass between the house and garage. Too close for comfort.
My husband and I celebrated our 53rd anniversary on July 1. Went into town and had pizza and then brought DQ home for later. Hot day just like it was on our wedding day.
Has anyone had gangling cysts? I have a 2.3cm one on my middle finger joint. Had it looked at and an ultrasound done on it. For now will just keep an eye on it as it doesn’t hurt or prevent me from doing anything. It’s always something.
Spent a few hours yesterday cutting fabrics with my quilting buddy for the new Bonnie Hunter leader and ender challenge. Made good progress on the cutting.
Everyone have a HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Rita – I saw the leader ender post, too. I need to start cutting – I flagged her post! A coyote? By your garage? I thank God for my fence every day and especially on those nights when I’m sitting in the porch and I hear them yipping in the distance.

    2. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

I’ve had two of the same cysts, once surgically removed which came back on one wrist as well one on the other wrist. my dr froze the spot and then inserted a needle into the cyst to remove the fluid. The one on the surgery wrist once she drained it, it’s never come back, the other wrist it came back a few years later and she drained it again – it’s never returned and that was well over 5 years ago. If you have a dr that would drain it, I would advise that route as it is so easy to do. Apparently in the old days they would take a book and smash the area where the cyst is to burst the cyst. That seems too painful for me.

      1. Rita in Iowa

Thanks Teresa for the info. Right now I will wait to see what develops. Maybe it will go away. I hate to have anything else going on health wise.

    3. Candy

I did have a ganglion cyst on the top of my wrist many years ago (probably 50 years, now that I think about it , lol). The doctor I saw said “Well, we could do what they used to do in the olden days … take a hardcover book and smash it on the cyst … or we could just see what happens.” Hmmm … I opted to see what happens. I worked in an office in those days, and occasionally I would accidentally hit the cyst on the corner of a desk, and it would disappear for awhile. This happened a few times, until I must have hit it hard enough (this didn’t hurt, by the way) that it finally disappeared for good. Hope that happens for you too!

Well since it’s Thursday I can wish you a very happy birthday, Mary! I do hope you have a very special day! Ron enjoyed lunch with one of his daughters & Wednesday night I took him to get a dish of ice cream. Our favorite ice cream in the Cincinnati area is Graeter’s. They’ve been in business for many, many years & so many flavors to choose from! Ron was shocked at all the birthday wishes he got on FB! For those that don’t know, my dear friend Ron turned 92 yesterday. Last year many of you showered him with cards…& He still has those cards!
Yesterday I noticed that my cucumber plant & many of my small tomatoes had been eaten. The deer population is pretty bad here, but I’ve never had them eat my plants on the patio. Pretty sure it’s the same doe that had a baby a couple weeks ago in a neighbors yard. I’m hoping I’ve moved them where she can’t get to them now! Love the birthday card from Hank! And how pretty is Hazel, so sparkling white! Love a white dog!

Happy, Happy, Happy, Happy Birthday Mary!
Hoping that your day is full of many blessings. Enjoy yourself!

I absolutely love your hydrangeas. They are beautiful. I will try to take a picture of mine if I remember tomorrow. We have been extremely busy. We put an offer on a two acre property that was accepted, subject to the sale of our home. We pray it sells quickly. We will live there with our son and his family and his horses as well as our dog and their 2 dogs. The property is set up very well for horses, has an above ground pool and a fenced off garden area with raised beds. They will build a home for themselves after the city ok’s their plan and placement. We’ve wanted to do this for years and at 65 finally found something we fell in love with including the house. I read recently about someone who did the same thing at 70 and he said he has never regretted it. Wish us luck everyone.

    1. Kathy in western NY

Teresa, this sounds like an ideal set up for you to grow old together with pets and be with family too. I hope it all works out. You see homes around here adding onto the garages and from the road you can tell with doorways and sizes they must be in law apartments as they call them. Or large offices to work in! Once you have enough land, it’s easier for permits, etc.

Happy day to you Mary!!! I hope you get a cool ice tea and just sit outside and admire all your hard work making your land look beautiful. We took down 2 black walnut trees a couple years ago and had the wood planked. Our daughter used some for flooring. They are hardy trees but oh so many squirrels running around hiding nuts all around our house perimeter. That I don’t miss.

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Teresa – now THAT is exciting! You’ll send pictures, won’t you?

      1. Teresa from Port Coquitlam,BC

I will as soon as it’s really ours. Just need to get our home sold, I’ve been praying every day.

With regard to the front tuck on the shirts these days – not sure where this more recent trend came from but I do remember having holes in my shirts at the waistline because the rivets in my jeans were wearing through when I leaned or moved along the countertop, so I started tucking in the front of my tees so I could avoid the holes. Also had some bleach stains at the waistline because I would lean against the counter while cleaning the tiles😂. This was years ago – I’m talking more than 30, so I guess I’ll take the credit for this current trend🤣. Just took awhile to trickle down😉.

I did finish an embroidered towel. When it is washed and ironed, I will take a picture of it.
