Harvest, 10-6-25

Going…

Going….

GONE!

October 6, 2025 at 7:15 pm

Of course Farmer Tim has more fields to harvest but this is the one I watch daily. I will miss it but now I can see the highway again.

You were touched by Cider’s story and Rod and Carrolyn are grateful for your condolences. They thank you for sharing their grief as well as their love of Cider and your own pet. It’s a very sharp grief to lose a beloved dog and one that will turn your life upside down. And you know what I ALWAYS say – the only way to manage that grief is to love and care for another dog that needs you.

I got behind with this next pattern for sale – those darned hives! I just didn’t have time for that.

This Old Farmhouse, $5.00, SASE, cash or check to Mary ETHERINGTON, 2345 Palm Ave. Garner, IA 50438.

I’m all caught up on orders – several of you have been waiting for your pattern but upon investigating why, I see every order had a problem. From now on if I don’t get a SASE I’m keeping your money and throwing away your request. And now some of you are grumbling but others are saying “it’s about time!”

I can sympathize with her! Been there, done that!

This Old Farmhouse #639, $5 and SASE

I gave him a towel to lay on but this next picture is last night – in my twin bed!

Yes, Hazel is a bed hog and then Morty got added in – not much room for me! Is it any wonder I don’t sleep well??

Here’s Bentley with Grandpa – celebrating his first birthday, Bentley’s, that is, not Grandpa’s – haha!!!!

He got his own cake!!!! And hat!!

Good thing Hazel can’t compare birthday celebrations!

Yup, lawn cleanup again – the 40 mph wind yesterday blew branches , leaves and limbs out of the trees.
Sigh
Going to vet tomorrow – I’ve got questions.

Did anybody see Taylor Swift on Fallon tonight? She’s pretty cool – even at age 77 I think so!!!

The pictures of Tim’s corn field being harvested are wonderful!
My condolences to Barbara on losing Hilda Boo. 🥲
    Thanks, Mary 🥰

  2. Jo in Wyoming

Isn’t it amazing how fast the corn fields can be harvested? The price of that equipment, they have to harvest, then move on to pay for that equipment.
I got a kick at the birthday party and the “bed hog”. My bed is a half square triangle now that Loretta takes so much of my pillow space!
Taylor Swift has been writing and singing from about 14 years old. I think it’s wonderful she matured without going cookoo. She’s not trashy. I think her creativity is amazing.I enjoy watching her on TV. My friends favorite band was Credence Clearwater Revival…she was 94 !!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jo – wow! I, too, love Credence Clearwater Revival as well as Taylor Swift. She was so composed, mature, confident and appreciative, that I was very impressed. And while that interview went on, the Chiefs lost!

I absolutely love everything about this blog. Where else can you go for farm life, quilts, kids, pets, gardens and so much more?
    Thank you, Mary!

  4. Cathy Haney

Oh Mary, you have the most wonderful friends!!!
My mom (Theresa Young) had a great 95th birthday and loved all her cards that were sent her way.
You and your friends couldn’t have pleased her more…I am so grateful to each and everyone!
Love to all of you, Cathy

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Cathy – we are all so glad we helped her have a happy 95th birthday! Yes, my readers are wonderful friends!

  5. Beryl BC

We had a cat my husband named Edith Ann. He was a fan of the Laugh In show, and thought the cat had a similar personality to the Edith Ann on the show.

  6. Brenda in Georgia

Altogether, a wonderful post that I loved reading and going back again to review the photos. Your new kitten is so adorable. What a wonderful gift for you.

  7. Pamela Dempsey in Northeast Texas 😻

I have to say again, I love your Morty! What a little sweetheart and so cute finding your bed and wanting to stay with you Mama 😻❤️! I hope the Vet trip goes well.
So sorry again about Cider and now Hilda Boo 🥲. So,so hard.
I was so happy finding my own copies of Country Threads books, the quilt shop series from 1992 and the Life in the Country at Abe books! They came yesterday, good condition except I think some patterns torn out of the back of the country one.
Today is our 16th anniversary and I’m going to make Darrell’s favorite hamburger stroganoff and mine, Lasagna 🥰. We are going to sunset swimmers class tonight at the physical therapy place. Hugs everyone!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Pamela – I saw the picture first and didn’t understand. When these companies sell used books, they shouldn’t say even “good condition” if pages are missing!! That’s false advertising and I’d complain if I were you. I’ll check out the book to see what you’re missing. Happy Anniversary!!

Morty is an adorable little guy, lots of personality and it looks like he’s making himself right at home. I’m concerned that you let him up on your stove top. I’d be worried that because he’s allowed up there when it’s not in use that he might jump up and land on it some when it’s hot, and burn his paws. We’ll, maybe you never use the stove top, then it wouldn’t be a problem.
I’ll go back to minding my own business now.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sharon F – you did not offend me – the stovetop rarely gets used actually but honestly if I were using a burner I would consider locking him in the pantry. I’m even very careful when I open the oven. Curiosity killed the cat, you know.

  9. Linda in Saginaw Michigan

I know why Morty found you, it’s because Minnie found me and the good Lord didn’t what you to be jealous of my new baby! Hey, that works for me. Minnie is growing, she is longer, I don’t think much taller but next to my other girls she still looks tiny to me. I wonder if she will ever stop eating like she is starving to death. She was when she found me and keeps eating like that. It’s nothing for her to eat one entire 3 oz. can of kitten food! I will look at her bowl, push together the little she left when she acts like she is done and she will go back and scarf down the bit left. Then her little tummy is blown up and firm, I put her down and she will run like lightning.

Isn’t it fun to watch farmer Tim and those huge machines harvest! We have some humongous farms close by where farmers either get together to work in fields or they rent 4 or 5 harvesters to clear the fields. Then they have trucking companies with semi’s to haul for them. Don’t know how many acres they work, but the fields go on forever.

Don’t feel alone about you little bed hogs. I have a king bed and have to fight for room and it is just me, Nelson and Sammie, but the both want to see who can get the closets to me!

Have a fabulous day everyone. I am cleaning house this morning so I can sew all afternoon. Blessings and love to all.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Linda – haha! It would take 3-4 of Minnie to reach Morty’s size! Going to the vet this afternoon – hope she can give me an approx age. I am smitten and constantly entertained!

  10. Brenda Ks

Mary I ask Ron why you would keep someone’s money and throw away their request and he said “ No SASE”

  11. Ginger S in New Hampshire

I just love Morty! he has the cutest little face. Your pets all have great personalities. I think Taylor Swift is a great role model for girls/women. She is a very talented performer and song writer.

  12. Fran Dixon

I love seeing the machinery in the fields. Its looking mighty “brown” in the fields today. Some say they hate the brown. My answer to that is move to FL or HI.

Gosh, that Morty is full of personality!

  13. Carolyn Rector of Ohio

Been a Swifty for quite a while now!! Loved the New Heights podcast when she was on with Travis Kelce before their engagement. Precious!
I love little Morty. He’s right at home.
I really hate to see the end of warm weather. I loved your harvest pictures.
I like the old farmhouse quilt picture, too!

  14. Janet S

Poor Keeper – he looks like something is missing. That Morty sure has made herself at home in short order.
It’s amazing how fast the seasons change.

    1. Hankster's Mom

I think Keeper may be hoping that Hankster shows up. Mary says that Keeper knows when I turn off the highway as he runs to the gate. We will have to get the boys together soon.

  15. Sheryl Harrison

Bentley’s birthday picture would make a cute birthday card.

Sending love to Hilda Boo’s parents.

    1. Barbara Moore

Thanks, Sheryl, for your tender thoughts about Hilda. She was a dear old lady who we loved so much. Both she and “sister,” Edith Ann came to us in 2011, after our first doxie had passed. Hilda was diagnosed with an enlarged heart (it’s because she had so much love to give us.) So we doctored her for an additional year with a lot of costly meds, knowing full well, that she wouldn’t recover, but wanted more time w/her regardless. When it was time, we knew she shouldn’t go on and sadly we said a tearful goodbye. She had a good life. barb in tucson

      1. Sheryl Harrison

I am sorry! It is so hard. I’ve had to make that decision several times and it’s not an easy one. I hope the happy memories will soon fill your hearts. Love and prayers!

  16. Kathy in western NY

I’ll have to go on you tube and see Taylor swift’s performance. I have a friend who works with disadvantaged children in the city who have no parental support in their lives so Friday she gave them a treat to watch the release of whatever Taylor’s newest. . She said it was like she handed them a million dollars to see the expressions on their faces of happiness. They got to be treated like kids for a while rather than thinking how to survive.
    I love Bentleys birthday celebration!!!!

  17. Kelli in NE Ohio

Bentley and that cake and hat – what a sweetie! It brought a huge smile to my face. 🐶🐾 Had to laugh at your bed hogs – my little Beau snuggles and pushes until he gets comfy. I’ll never complain since he’s my bestie!! Have a good day everyone 🥰

  18. Sandy

Hi Mary, once again l am amazed at Morty! On the bed and Hazel not objecting! Bella would not allow any cat or dog on our bed,and yes ,she does take mire than her share of the single bed!l think l need to get a set of pet stairs so she can get up on the bed by herself, getting hard to lift her up a few times per night, she is 14 now and not as lively. Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

  19. Karen

I agree Mary, Taylor Swift is amazing. Her appearance tonight was my biggest exposure to her and I was impressed with her personality and pure joy she exhibited when the audience was singing her latest releases. Funny thing is I was at a literature festival yesterday and a 5 year old had written a comic book about Taylor….she is a “fan” and a proclaimed, “Swifty”! Your only as old as you feel!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Karen – I was so impressed with her composure and speaking!! I’m not a pop music fan but I might be a Swifty after all. Ha!

    2. Diane O in Michigan

I grew up on a farm and loved all the seasons of farming. Fall harvest was one of the best! Morty couldn’t be any cuter, love the laid back attitude. We’ve got lots of oak trees in our yard, so stick pick up is constant. Love the pattern you have for sale, but have so many on the to-do list already.

  20. Lindah in northern CA

ohhh! That 4th photo from the top is a classic. The composition and balance are professional. The story it tells! It needs to be enlarged and framed. For sure, it would win a photo contest. You caught some beautiful sky/clouds photos. Yay for dumpers. I have a hand cart that dumps. Love it. I hope you are ok in the morning after picking up all that debris. It’s still early days….
