Pronouns Are So Important, 10-7-25

“He” is a “she”! Morty is a girl! Hahahaha!!!!! Her name will remain Morty, maybe as a nickname for Morticia? My vet says she weighs 2 lbs and is apparently healthy although she started her on Revolution for possible ear mites, worms, and any other parasites since I don’t know her background.

“Home On the Range!”

As per the usual order of events, when I lose a cat, another shows up. I hope this isn’t going to work in reverse – I don’t think Millie has felt well for several months but when I called my vet office several months ago, the receptionist brushed me off saying “oh, she probably has a little cold”. It shouldn’t be her call – if I want to pay the vet bill to have my cat checked out, so be it but I accepted it and have watched Millie remain lethargic all summer. I made an appointment for her on Thursday afternoon. I might be imagining this – she’s 11-1/2 years old, no kitten anymore so maybe it’s nothing.

I’m watching the Yankees pound the BlueJays so my sewing machine is sitting idle. Moved the rest of my plants inside as tonight it’s getting down to 36-39 degrees. This was an “ooops” –

Sigh

It’s wrapped in a quilt and I’ll repot it tomorrow. I think I have an idea of how to repot so it doesn’t tip over. I’ll let you know if it works.

Maybe we’ll have to call your “new girl” Miss Morty! She’s too cute to be a boy (sorry fellas)! I hope you get good news on Millie tomorrow… she’s beautiful! I’m so glad you seem to be feeling better these days … yaaay!

I laughed so hard at Morty being a ‘she’ and not a ‘he’ because there’s a pretty calico looking cat that comes to visit and get food at night. Showed up the first night we lived here! It’s always dark when ‘she’ comes by and since it’s very skittish, I had to peek as it went down the stairs. I didn’t see anything so I assumed it was a girl. Husband named her Penelope. Last night I was sitting on the deck and ‘she’ did a long, luxurious stretch down the steps and I spotted HIS trouble puffs! HA HA I came in and told my husband and he decided we should change the name to Pitstop as in the late 60s there was a cartoon called Penelope Pitstop AND he comes by to make pitstops for food and water!

My husband and I also watched the Yankee game and were hoarse from cheering for them and yelling at the TV!

Did the vets spay Morty when they found out he was a she or had she already been fixed? She is certainly a cutie.

Disappointed in your vets receptionist . We had a fairly young cat like yours get both cancer and renal failure.

Jean – no, Morty is too young to be spayed – later this fall or early winter I’ll schedule it

Love the joke. My comment is..
Parts don’t fall off but they certainly do SAG! LOL

    Good morning Mary,
I once had a stray ginger cat adopt me and I promptly named him Mikey At Mikey’s first vet visit, I learned Mikey was a girl so she became Michelle. Morty seems to be all settled in and well accepted by her new siblings.
I hope Millie’s vet visit is encouraging and there is an easy answer to her health concerns.
You continually amaze me at how much you do in one day!

I love seeing Morty getting acquainted with her new home. I was trying to think of a girl’s name to fit “Morty” and “Mortadella” popped into my head! Definitely girlish, ending in “ella”, but it’s not a “people name” like your pets usually get. I have fond memories of the delicious mortadella sausage sandwiches I used to get at a little Italian deli near my former home.

Things are quiet here in North Carolina, where I live with a ginger cat named Rusty, and more fabric, yarn and UFOs than I will ever use.

Thanks for your lovely blog, with its community of readers.

Oh my goodness Morty is adorable! When we rescued our kitty we called her Kirby because we weren’t sure: boy or girl. But at the vet visit “she” was confirmed! Her name has been perfect, just like her!
Mary, I love wardrobe and dresser pictures full of quilts! That’s how most of mine are stored too! And any time I’ve left them open I find Kirby in there, making herself cozy!! You certainly have an eye for amazing photographs!! Thanks for always sharing!!

Aww, sweet little Morty or Mortie 🤭. She’s so lucky to have found you and your bed !😻❤️ I read that 80% of ginger kitties are male too so you have a special one. I hope Millie is okay.
Our temperatures are still in upper 80s and only 60s at night, hurry up Fall!

    The barn photo is beautiful!

My brother has a cat named Prince S. When he showed up, they named him Princess but changed his name to Prince S when he eventually tamed down so they could handle and vet him and realized he was a boy.

I’m having a big laugh about Morty being a girl. We had the same experience when someone flopped a littler of kittens off at the recycling center (of all places). We agreed to take one and and my young daughters named “him” Hershey. I made the appointment to have him neutered but come to find out, he needed to be spayed. Hershey brought us a lot of laughs and fun over the years. He was an expert at climbing the Christmas tree and we hve great pictures of him laying among the tranches. Morty has stumbled onto a great place to call home!

That picture of your barn is just beautiful! Years ago we had a beautiful black & white tuxedo cat we were told was a girl when we adopted it as a kitten. Midnight turned out to be a boy! He never did get big like most male cats, but he was beautiful with those yellow eyes! Boots just had his vet appointment to get his vaccines up to date & he’s put on 3.5 lbs since I got him. I have no idea how long he was in a shelter, so he might have lost weight. He’s not what I would call a good eater either, & refuses to eat without a Tbsp of pumpkin in his kibbles! He’s a year & a half now & has calmed down a little, but not much! He adores Ron & the feeling is mutual! Today I have someone coming to measure for new blinds for the sewing room/sunroom. Reorganizing it has been challenging, but a much better use of the space. We finally got some much needed rain here in SW Ohio yesterday. It’s amazing how just overnight the grass greens up! I hope Millie is okay. Only you would know if she isn’t herself, not someone who hasn’t seen her!

Look carefully at the lower left corner of the picture of the plant that tipped —
she’s just barely making an appearance 🙂

Morty is adorable! Love that she’s a girl! Finally got some fall here—it’s 44 degrees! Yesterday morning it was 20 degrees warmer. I want to get out sweaters and make soup!

Mary, the BARN picture is so beautiful. You take such professional photos. Thanks so much for sharing.
I just love how Morty has made herself at home in such a short amount of time. She’s found herself the perfect home.
Our colored leaves are already past peak here with rain and a couple days of brisk wind. Beautiful while they lasted. After a couple weeks of above normal temperatures, we had frost this morning.
Hope all is well with Millie.

I had wondered if Morty if was female as the size was smaller, especially the head didn’t look like a tom. But, considering it was a kitten, I didn’t give it another thought. Cute as the dickens and appears to be so well behaved… which all cat owners know to be a myth. One of our female cats was named Serpico, my husband was determined that be the cats name and she didn’t mind it at all. The picture of your barn looks like professional photography!

  16. Rosalie in Texas

Morty is having a wonderful life with you!
I love to see her exploring the farm.
So glad you are feeling better, Mary.

Morty is a great name for your little girl. She is very pretty. Love your joke today! You always take such great pictures of your barn. And your animals! Thank you for sharing. My daughter has 5 cats. The last time they went to the animal shelter, they came home with 2 ginger kittens, brother and sister.

  18. Sandy

Hi Mary, l am surprised you hadn’t had a look at the cats private parts beforehand! We had a girl ginger cat about 40 years ago, Carla, very sweet girl! I hope your other cat is ok(can’t remember her name now!) Out days are getting longer, but breezy! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

  19. Sara in Indiana

Love the kitty pics. Hope Hazel doesn’t get jealous! Hope Millie is okay. Your barn pics are always amazing, too, like something from a coffee table book.

  20. Ginger S in New Hampshire

I love that Morty is a girl!!!! She has such a pretty face it just makes sense! We had a stray kitten that adopted us when we lived in Ohio. My children were young and we had just watched the movie Milo and Otis so of course they want to name the kitten Milo. Turns out Milo was a girl and we kept the name!!!

When I was a young teacher, I had a class “female”guinea pig that needed to come home with me for the summer. I guess I had never really looked at it too closely, or perhaps it was just they way it was laying, but I thought it had a growth. My brother was taking his dog to the vet so I called to see if I could come with him so they could take a look at my “girl”. The vet agreed. Imagine my embarrassment when he picked up the guinea pig, tuned it over on it’s back and “Ta Da”. It’s a boy!!! My brother and I laughed all the way home. We figured the vet had a good story to tell his wife when he got home.

  21. Jay

That barn pic is gorgeous! And so is Morty. Such a pretty kitten.
My doctor’s receptionist wouldn’t make an appointment for me when I called about a painful rash, telling me to eat dry toast and drink tea. When I finally got in to see him about my worsening case of SHINGLES! he was furious and excused himself to go read her the riot act.

    1. Beth T.

Oh my gosh, Jay, that is an extreme example of “practicing medicine without a license”!! It’s good to know that your doctor didn’t put up with it, after he finally was in a position to hear about it. It’s awful that you had to wait because of her, though; shingles is a terrible condition. (Not that I have to tell YOU.)

  22. Jo in Wyoming

I think Beth is right. The vet clinic needs to take care of all patients, not screen out some older pets.
Did they give you any idea Morty’s age? She seems so little and friendly.

  23. Christine in AZ

Long ago, my mother told me all red cats are males. And I believed her because it seemed to be true. So I’m surprised that Morty is a Morticia!

We’re heading to Phoenix to babysit the grands .., but there’s a supposed hurricane passing through that will dump a lot of rain. We’ll have to shuffle plans of what to do but I will be enjoying the rain.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Christine – well, she’s little and it was hard to see – I, too, thought most ginger cats were boys so I didn’t look a second time

  24. Beth T.

I do not like that your vet’s receptionist treated you that way when you called with your concerns about Millie. Our vet clinic is very different. I remember them making a fast appointment for us when I called to say that our chicken “wasn’t herself”. Who knows your pet better than you do? And who else can speak for them? Good for you, for keeping an eye out and following up. I’ll bet the vet doesn’t know that patients are being screened by girls answering the phone in such an offhand manner. P.S. Morty is quite the cutie! We have a Billie, a girl, and Johnny tells me he is always careful to introduce her complete with spelling for those he thinks will know the difference, or to say, “This is our girl, Billie”, because somehow it matters to us that people get it right.

  25. Dee from Shell Rock

Love the barn photo! And always the cats, dogs, quilts, I love it all. You’re like a letter from home.
