It had to happen! 2-6-25

Yup, I had to really clean my house – I’ve been ignoring it since my cleaning lady didn’t show up but I finally had to succumb and it took me most of the day. Of course the cleaning didn’t include my sewing room or upstairs. Ugh. So more to clean tomorrow. PU!

Hank came for a play date this afternoon and I can tell he’s younger than Keeper because Keeper wears out. I will have to make them come in and rest in the future.

It’s been an evening of basketball – here are those slippers everyone asked about. I got them at the Dollar Store.

Reader photos

Such a beauty!

A reader was cleaning her sewing room and look what she found! These sweet vintage baby dresses – who else remembers them?

My plants are getting almost too much sun these days and as the sun gains strength I’ll have to move them back.

Anyone else have sampler pictures to send?

What wonderful baby dresses, so cute. The stitchery is wonderful to see and so many of you have such talent, so nice to see them all. The quilt made with the stitchery on each block is a lovely idea to save some pretty pieces. Love the blog about nothing.

I, too, can’t respond to the Feb. 7th entry. But, COX in my area, was out last night for several hours.
So glad to hear from Patti. Hang in there, girl. We are all pulling for you!
Mary, loved the picture of you as a flower girl!!
Positive thoughts for Debbie this coming week.

I’m also having problems trying to reply on your 2-7-25 post but, sometimes it just corrects itself during the day. Go figure!!!
Patti, so nice of you to keep in touch and let us know how you’re doing. Praying things get better soon for you.
I also see that Cardinals in the Thicket is #195.
Thanks, everyone, for the sampler pictures.

  4. Lisa B

I found Cardinals in the Thicket on Etsy, and it was pattern #195. Didn’t you say someone helped you sort the patterns into order? Maybe this will help you locate it. I was unable to leave a message on the February 7th blog post. I don’t know what I was doing wrong.

Mary, such a pretty flower girl. You look delightful! Why isn’t the picture in a frame to preserve it?

hi mary, and everyone. a quick note from me. i know it’s been a bit. i’ve been on a wild ride. i am enjoying all the cards and notes i’ve been receiving. so uplifting. i’m still in a limbo over here. lots and lots of testing. talk about cost of medical care. quarter of a million already. one week in hospital plus a biopsy plus a head to toe pet scan, mri of spine plus neck. thank goodness for good health insurance.
i will tell you that the pain and the pain meds does a number on my thinking and thought patterns so i will probably be disjointed. they have determined it is cancer but don’t know where it is coming from. they are plotting out the radiation treatments that hopefully will start sometime next week. more another day. keep stitching. patti in florida

Patti – so good to hear from you!!! Cancer is a scary word – as I recently learned – but medicine is so advanced that many situations are handled before they get the best of you. Keep us posted.

The vintage baby dresses reminded me that I have a picture of my grandma holding my dad in his christening gown. I still have that gown along with my dad’s little sailor suit, small dress suits, socks and shoes. My grandma never got rid of anything.
I am enjoying the pictures of the vintage needlework. I have so much of that from my grandma, my mom and my aunt. Someday I’ll cut them up and make a quilt.

Gloria – take pictures of those little clothes – it’s going to be out next subject

This is a lovely post. I have my dad’s baby dress and tatted cap. My sister had her oldest son wear it for his baptism.
    Thanks, Mary 🥰

I remember those baby dresses. Mine did not survive my childhood. Mother let me have a couple of them to play with, and I used them to dress up our cat, a big orange tom. He was not best pleased.

Mary, you sure can take us down memory lane with all these photos. It’s been so enjoyable to many of us who like rays of sunshine in our reading.
It’s fun remembering embroidered pillowcases and needlework parties. And 61 years ago today the Beetles landed in NYC to be on the Ed Sullivan Show. I can remember that evening watching in our living room and being very excited singing along “ I want to hold your hand”.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Kathy – I remember that evening, too, watching Ed Sullivan and my dad being just appalled at their long hair. Haha!

Mary, can you imagine if our parents saw the Grammys the other night and the outfits or lack of clothes, I should say? My dad thought all that hip movement was not appropriate for us to watch but he did after we pleaded.

I have a pair of those slippers from Dollar General but mine are black with a smiley face. The trouble with them for me is that they are a little too wide for me (and I have wide feet), so have to wear a pair of socks with them to keep them from coming off.
Enjoyed all the pictures again today.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jeanine – when mine were new they fit nicely but now they feel sloppy and too big even though I’ve washed them once.

Oh how I wish I had known there was a peacock picture to go along with my peacock spread that Mom did for me! I have pillowcases I embroidered that go with it & she did the crocheting around the edge but I’d love the picture as well! I spent some time in the cedar chest the other day looking for my house sampler that went with my house quilt but never did find it. I did find lots of memories in there however!

Mary and readers thanks for all the samplers pictures you have sent. They are very special and a lot of work. In the 80s there was a company called Creative Circle that had parties and sold their kits. I was asked by one of the dealers to make samples for her to have for her parties to show. I don’t know if I took pictures or not because things were not digital, Jeanie was the name of the dealer. I’d have to check if I still have the information.
We are down to my daughters now, made it from Iowa before the ice started. Will keep you informed how things are going.
Sounds like Iowa is now going to be in a snowy pattern for awhile.
My sister in Washington State had knee replacement surgery done on Monday but doing well. She lives on one of the islands and had to come to mainland a couple days earlier because of the storms they were getting in Seattle. Never a dull moment that’s for sure.

    1. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

Wish your sister luck with recovery. I am just over two months since my surgery. Tell her to use an ice machine if she can get her hands on one and do the exercises no matter what. The first two weeks seemed to be the worst for me and I’m allergic to the meds they give you for pain so it was just Tylenol and Advil for me.
I wish I would have had a recliner I think I would have been able to sleep better.

      1. patti

teresa, i can’t imagine being allergic to the pain meds. i would be screaming for sure. the recliner has been a lifesaver. in fact, i could barely get out of the bed the other morning. you’re obviously a strong lady. hugs, patti in florida

Rita – please greet Kim from all of us – yes, southern Iowa is getting snow, we get nothing. Gosh, I wish I had taken pictures years ago of the stuff I made. I know I have some unfinished projects in my storeroom. I remember Creative Circle, too. Good luck to your sister – does she live on Vashon Island perhaps? I have an acquaintance there.

      1. Rita In Iowa

Mary my sister lives on Orcus Island, Eastsound, WA. She was the postmaster till she retired. Now she does housecleaning for elderly couples on the island. She is 18 months older than I am at just turning 73 on Ground Hogs Day. Her clients made her meals to put in the freezer.

I love seeing the samplers! They bring back fond memories of the times l spent with my aunt, and best friend, learning how to embroider. Those were the best of times for me. In addition to embroidering samplers, l also used to embroider pillowcases. I loved doing those! Does anyone else embroider them?

  15. Beth Laverty

I have been loving seeing all the samplers you are showing. I will be sharing a few later today….. And I actually have a few of the little baby dresses out in my antique shop.

  16. Sharon G. ( central WA)

Mary – The baby dresses, the peacock, and the rest of the needlework that you’ve shared from everyone has been so enjoyable. Lots of work and time put into them.
We had some very dry weather in January where I live in central WA. It started snowing this afternoon as I was leaving the grocery store. It’s 10 pm and it’s still snowing!
Thanks again for your blog about nothing.
    Take care everyone.

  17. DebMac

I have 3 very similar baby dresses that I wore. Yellow, pink, and white. I still have a sampler to send if I can get good lighting for it. The sun is really starting to warm up isn’t it? I am so used to it getting dark at 5 it really surprised me the last couple of nights-supper was a bit late as I wasn’t used to starting supper until it got dark.

I think old baby dresses/children’s clothing would be a nice subject for pictures.

    1. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

That’s funny you mention it still being light out at five. I was reading and in our living room we have a light on a timer that comes on at five and I wondered why it was on as it couldn’t be five yet it was still light. And it really was five. It made my day. Especially because it was a beautiful sunny day yesterday. Very cold though for here.
The old baby dresses are beautiful and my mom let us use them for our dolls so they are all gone. Too bad it would have been nice to have one.

  18. Martha W in WY

I have some of my old baby dresses like the ones shown. Our second born was a girl and the hospital took baby photos about a day after the birth. So, I brought one of my dresses for her hospital baby photo. Our second girl was born at the same hospital another 1.5 years after the first. They had stopped doing the baby photos by then. 😒
