Keep This Up, 2-7-25

I am loving all the pictures of the samplers and assorted other treasures. Several have sent children’s clothing and that’s what we’ll do next. Don’t stop sending your sampler pictures but if you have sweet baby or children’s clothes, we’d all love to see them. I saved this magazine picture from many years ago (the date is missing) of these precious little clothes. I think I have some of my own tucked away – my mom loved clothes.

Here’s my fanciest dress – 1951 flower girl.

P.S. does anyone have a copy of Cardinals in a Thicket? A reader has asked for a copy and I can’t find anything – not even the title? Is it in a book? I said I wasn’t going to waste my time searching for old patterns anymore and unless I offered it, I would not make the requested pattern available. I am looking into a home office copier but the price of patterns will have to go up at the same time. Ugh. Help me with this pattern if you can.

What a keepsake picture of you Mary, loved those fancy gloves. I bet you did a few twirls in that pretty dress. I love the idea of pictures of children’s clothes from years ago. I had to enlarge the tool stitchery to check it out, wow! the baby goats are getting bigger and cuter. Debbie, I hope your surgery goes well and I will keep you in my prayers. Please keep us posted.

I have a copy of Cardinals in the Thicket. I also have Bluejays
and Goldfinches. If you would like I will make copies and send them to you.

That quilt is a great idea — putting all the varied pieces of needlework made by somebody thru the years. It is a real mix of learning different styles and is amazing to see everything. A real history and so much fun to see and remember. A treasure for somebody. Wouldn’t that be interesting if we had kept all our efforts learning something new thru the years?

I’ve always believed a person should keep their first project learning something new. They may hate it with a passion, but they can compare it with current efforts to see how they have improved? (I don’t understand this stupid spell check stuff!!! They don’t like my use of improved.) My 10 cent Learn How Book, my 15 cent skein of yarn and 10 cent crochet hook got a lot of use during my growing up years, which aren’t over yet!!!!!

You are such a great group of friends. Years ago, I loved to get mail and pen pals were a thrill. 67 years later I still have their addresses and wonder if they are even alive. The ladies of the blog live all over the country and globe and tell us about their lives. We need more of this in our world.

Love all the shared pictures. Thank you.

On the copier topic. The hp color laser jet mfp m477fnw laser printer we have used eight years or more was offered on this page for $685. Would you consider buying this instead of a copier because it prints from my MAC laptop and just prints a copy whenever we need one. I think you can get some help with a wireless adaptor enabler device that plugs into an outlet if wireless is the only way it will work. I am not a techniclal person so I may not know what I am talking about. I just remember my uncle had to get one a long time ago to print from his iPad.

Yes, Mary, it is fixed. I can comment. Not much news in my neck of the woods. We were supposed to get rain/ice/snow mix last night into this morning, but nothing, so that is good. I do not like the ice part.
I will have to look to see if I can find my dress I had when I was about a year old. I have a picture of me with it on. I had one of my granddaughter’s have her picture taken in it over 25 years ago.
I’m working on a potato chip quilt using men’s shirts. I have all the blocks made and have started to sew the blocks together.

Jeanine – great minds think alike! I have my basket of shirts close by to cut out a potato chip quilt – it’s still waiting for me however. Can’t wait to see yours

Oh my gosh Mary, that’s a wonderful picture of you in such a pretty dress. The white gloves topped it off. It reminds me of first communion dresses although much fancier and you’d be a bit young for first communion.
There are so many lovely cross stitch patterns displayed. I was especially struck by the children’s evening prayer/ bedtime prayer. First of all the cute kids and the kitties and I think a dog in there too. Plus the very tactile bear that was stitched. When I learned that prayer, the verse about “ if I should die before I wake I pray the Lord my soul to keep” was a bit scary as a little kid. I certainly like this version better.
With all the concern about bird flu and the price of eggs I hope your hens stay healthy. I recently paid 8 dollars for a dozen eggs. It’s terrible for all the farmers.
Those baby goats sure are growing fast.
I know I’m missing something but hope everyone has a good weekend.

Pat, I grew up with that version too. My sister has the embroidered version that hung in the girls bedroom. It took me a while to learn the softer version which is what I taught my three sons and still say nightly as I go to sleep.

      1. Patricia

Susan, I’m glad you taught your sons the gentler version. It’s a good one to say even at our age.
I have two sisters in Texas. One in Dallas and one in McKinney. Wondering where you hail from.

It has snowed two to three inches! That’s is the most snow we had all winter!

I love all the little dresses. I have two crocheted dresses my grandmother made for me. And talking of perms, my mom gave us Toni perms also. Curly hair was the thing!

    Have a good weekend!

Yes! I do have Cardinals in a Thicket pattern. After having it for many years I finally made it a couple of years ago. Will be happy to pass it on.

Had to go back and read yesterday’s comments. Good to hear from Patti. I’m praying for you. So many on this blog have faced cancer. May God give you the strength you need to ensure this. And I pray for your team of doctors.

Mary, The comments now work. I am one of the few, who can’t post a comment unless there is at least one already posted. Not sure why . . . Is it how a person is setup? Janice Traverse City area

Cardinals in a Thicket is a Country Threads pieced quilt pattern #195
I love the picture of you in a fancy dress.
I have one somewhere of me at Easter. I was between 3 or 4 and my hair was permed. Can you imagine perming a toddler’s hair? My mother was big on giving us girls a Toni. Apparently it was the thing. She must have given up on me, as I have no memory of getting a perm.
This blog is bringing back memories. Wish my mom and grandma would have keep the baby clothes of long ago. Cute! My mom was from New York City and she embraced the modern look. Even rejected Hostas in the garden because it reminded her of long ago. I, in the other hand, embraced Hostas and have always had them in my garden.
I was lucky enough as a child to have my grandmother live with us until I was 19 and she passed away at home. She is the one who taught us to embroider. I remember the paper patterns she had that you could iron into the fabric.

Carolyn – Toni’s must have been what all moms thought little girls should have. I won’t even post my picture with curls up above my ears and straight bangs across my forehead. It must have been a 50s thing.

I love the picture of you as a flower girl! The dress is gorgeous and the gloves…such a precious picture. It definitely should be in a frame. The needlework featured is so nice, especially love the quilts made from various cross stitch and crocheted items. What a great idea! The baby goats are so cute! Karla T, thank you for the information on your tiny quilts! I answered you but that was a post from a couple of days ago, don’t know if people go back to see answers. I love Temecula Quilt Company! Her fabric is awesome too. It’s going to snow tonight here in New England. We’re supposed to get about 8 to 10 inches, ugh! But I need to clean my sewing room so it’s all good! Patti, thanks for keeping us posted, thoughts and prayers are with you and all of our community that have upcoming surgeries, and procedures. Love this blog! Jan in MA
