It’s almost funny! 8-9-25

We had some wind this morning – whats new?

I didn’t pick up walnuts today – sigh. Instead I made Mexican Caviar.

We ate it for supper, now I have leftovers that didn’t get eaten. sigh

From Teresa in Port Quitlam, BC

 Mary,

I finally found some pictures of Eddy and his best friend Max and another of Tina and Spice my son’s dogs.

The first picture is Max on the left and Eddy on the right.  Max is a rescue from Mexico.  He came to Canada on Eddy’s 1st birthday.  They have been good friends – Max is a shepherd cross with who knows what.  Our Eddy is a golden doodle.

The next picture is Tina on the left, an Aussie shepherd – she is 1.5 and full of energy.  On the right is Spice, a standard poodle, who was rescued by a woman from a puppy mill.  Unfortunately the woman ended up with cancer shortly after adopting Spice so wasn’t able to care for her as much as she wanted.  Before she died she made sure all of her animals were going to good homes and my son got Spice.  When he got Spice she only asked to go outside once per day to go to the bathroom and when she ate her food she would lay down with both legs surrounding her food bowl.  That really broke our hearts because we know that she was probably kenneled except for her once/day bathroom break.  She didn’t know how to play or be a dog.  Yet she is so loving it was unbelievable.  Since they brought Tina home it was like Tina was one of Spice’s babies and she learned how to play with Tina and now she plays with Eddy too a little bit.  She plays with toys a bit now as well. Its a wonderful story of how resilient a dog can be and how forgiving she is.  She is somewhere between 8 and 10.

Tina and Spice

I commented about how sad this is – I hate puppy mills more than anything else I can think of.

Teresa:

Yes it is an incredible story about spice. We all love her so much and everyone says the best home she could have gone to is with Mike our son. She now goes to the bathroom like a normal dog, but I think it took a few years of living with Mike to be like that. We don’t know how many litters of pups she had. It is so heartbreaking to know there are people in the world that are cruel to animals. I’m just glad that place was found and shut down and we have spice in our family. Mike has a love of animals like no one I know. He’s so good with all animals. When he was a little boy bees would land on his hand and not sting him, he would walk around saying look at my friend.

In our part of BC- the greater Vancouver area, we get a lot of rescue dogs from Mexico. I don’t know why.

Teresa from Port Coquitlam

Mary here – bless them for helping rescue dogs and thank you, Mike!

Hope all of you in the Midwest. We just saw the news and it looks awful!
Teresa, your son is a treasure and I’m sure you’re so proud of him. I loved the story of the dogs.
Vicki in Seattle, I love your quilt. I knew it was yours as soon as I saw the vibrant colors and the fantastic views from your deck.
Mary, I can’t believe how much cleanup you’ve had to do this year. I’m sure you’re ready for a break. It sure looks beautiful cleaned but what a job.
    Take care all!

Happy birthday, Gloria! Loved the dog story. I’m sure glad we don’t have a walnut tree. And our apple tree is dead and blew over in the storm so w don’t have to pick them up either.
    It is beautiful out today.

  3. Jo in Wyoming

Mary, I know you can’t control what is advertised on your blog….today was 2 different puppy mills!
At least they support (pay) for those writing against them.
I don’t know why you’re getting so much wind. We get that all winter. I can’t remember you reporting this much wind ever. Our nemesis is pine cones. They dull the mower blades, break internal wires, are horrible to walk on.
I had cataract surgery last week. Everyday my vision is getting better. The other eye will be done in about 3 weeks. New glasses in 6 months. I’m so glad you got great news on your checkup. At this age, good news, is always exciting.

Jo – that was a key phrase likely – I won’t write it again here. Google can tell what I write about and that’s why those ads appeared, I suppose. Wish I could see them but I won’t look.
We have wind in the spring but this is a new thing for us and I hate it. Climate change, they say.

Jo, I got 5 ads I closed all from Jellystone Camping Resort south of Buffalo, NY. Must be big brother knew we owned a motor home! 🧐

        1. Cynthia in Minnesota

I think the ads correspond to what each of us look at! I ordered a top from Cathy’s place…and now I am bombarded with the ads for that website!

The Triscuit joke is a good one but I’m one of those who likes them. We often have the Mexican caviar for lunch, or a snack served with tostados scoops. We finally got some well needed rain and more is coming today. Our yards are in desperate need. We had the high winds but no branches down. Tomorrow, I head to Iowa for a family reunion in St Ansgar on Tuesday. Will spend Monday in Mason City and have dinner with my aunt. My aunt is a quilter, and we will go early on Tuesday and do some shopping at Debbie’s Quilt Shop in Osage. I usually find something that needs to come home with me, and Debbie has a great shop, always expanding.

We had a minister here who fostered rescue pups. Everyone wanted the last one he had before he moved.
Mary, we don’t have leftovers, we have planned overs!

  6. Debra J Oscarson

Loved the dog rescue stories. Sad, but then joyous for all. I got to close a lot of ads today. Does that still benefit you, Mary? My mom, Lorraine, has started receiving cards! Thank you! We have our big annual family picnic today with birthday cake and watermelon. She looks forwards to having as many of her ” kids” as can get there- “all under her wings”.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Debra – YES! The ads actually pay for the blog and its expenses. Thank you! Have a great party!!

To Connie R in N. Wisconsin
The pattern for that star quilt in yesterday’s blog is called Jewel Box “Five Star Gala”.
You can just google the name.

Linda: Thanks for the info on your beautiful quilt. You did a great job. I will definitely look into the pattern online. Thanks for sharing.

I loved reading about the dogs now having a good life with Teresa’s family. You know I’ve always felt there is a very special place in Heaven for those who rescue animals. Our 2 rescues we have now are from Tennessee and Miami, FL. Thank you to all who drive to transport these precious pets. There is a dog at our camp whom the owner keeps gradually introducing our dogs to so they can learn to play. We take it slow cause his dog is a yr old puppy and doesn’t know how ours do not understand what play time means. Our little rat terrier/ chihuahua mix just stands there frozen. Our terrier mix (that looked like Telly) does kinda jump back a little so we work at it. If you’ve never rescued a dog, you don’t understand the uncertainty that goes through them. Our vet helped us from the beginning and said most of all just give them the patience and love they need till the end of their lives since their beginnings were so horrible. Sorry to go on and on but I’m passionate about giving proper care to animals.
Our moon last nite was orange from the smoke in the air.
My family is all at Watkins Glen since last Thursday for the Nascar race. Sells out every year. It’s beautiful finger lakes country there. I’m glad to watch it in my AC home but I know they are enjoying themselves despite the 90 heat. Hubby said they get a little breeze occasionally but no wind like you have gotten there.

  9. Janet S

Vicki, You created a beautiful, unique quilt – such fun colors. It must be your own design. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Kathy in NY

We can always count on Vicki to show stunning quilts on her clothesline.
She amazes me with her beautiful colors. Thank you!

      1. Vicki in Seattle

Thanks Kathy, Janet and Teresa for the kind comments about my quilt.
It was inspired by Terry Rowland and helped me focus my mind and hands during an anxious week. Many of our family and friends rode successfully Saturday in Obliteride, a 100 mile bike ride to raise $ for Fred Hutchinson cancer center. Our oldest son received a life saving stem cell transplant there over 25 years ago . We are so thankful
but also remember those who lost their battle and those who are fighting right now. Prayers for a cure for all cancers soon.

Such a heartwarming story about rescue dogs. Almost all our pets were rescues – and I HATE puppy mills also. Iowa is one of the worst puppy mill offenders and Tom Colvin of ARL of Iowa works relentlessly with the Iowa legislature trying to remedy that.
CBS Sports is channel 221 on Direct TV.
If your sister Becky is reading this today (August 10) – Happy Birthday! We share birthdays and I treasure the leather bracelet she gave me for my birthday.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Gloria – and Happy Birthday to YOU, Gloria! FYI – Iowa ranks 2nd and Missouri is first in puppy mills. I simply can’t let myself think about it. What is Tom’s answer and/or solution?????

    2. Barbara (in MO)

Happy Birthday to you Gloria and to Becky too! My birthday is coming up on the 12th, the same as one of our card recipients, Lorraine I believe. I told her I was her birthday twin in my card. How fun to send cards to folks who will enjoy them.

      1. Mary Etherington Post author

Barbara – we should be sending you cards, too, but I don’t think you’re over 90, are you? 😋

  11. Cindy K

What a great story about the dogs. Hank had a big day today. My sons family got a puppy-a boxer named Nova and they brought her over to meet Hank. After they left, my grandson brought his new puppy over to meet Hank-a German shepherd mix named Duke. And my daughter brought her dogs-Daisy and Doser over to play. After they left, Hank took a swim in his pool. He didn’t have to be told to go to bed-he was exhausted.
My sister and I were looking forward to watching the fever play this evening. It was supposed to be on CBS. It wasn’t-not our CBS anyway. Glad to hear they won.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Cindy – I love doggie play dates! I’ll bet Hank was tired out. So many times we can’t get Fever games because they’re on CBS sports Network and we have no idea what that is!
You should send some dog pictures of your gang and new pups

  12. Teresa from Port Coquitlam, BC

That triscuit joke is hilarious. Though I must say I do like them. That quilt is really beautiful. Thank you Mary for sharing Spices story.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Teresa – I like Triscuits, too but with cream cheese and pepper jelly! 😋

  13. Charlotte in No. California

So glad we have people rescuing dogs! Loved the Triscuts joke! Going to WV to visit my dad for a couple of weeks.

  14. Dee from Shell Rock

I ahhhed over the dogs, understand about those darned walnuts. And I laughed about the triscuits. Thanks for a good laugh. Great grands here, part of them, we ate, played, drove around, I told stories about family and places. Who knows if anyone will remember but it made me feel good to talk about it.
