It’s Dirty Dozen Day, 5-31-26

Our number for June is 11 – eleven. Locate your UFO #11 and finish it by the end of the month – then send me a picture. Here’s Gloria’s #5 from last month:

And here are photos from Readers:

Had to go to Verizon today to find out why Facebook wasn’t working on my IPad – the young man who “helped” me was so rude to laugh at me and poke fun that I even responded that I didn’t think it was funny. As it turns out FB had an update a couple days ago and my Ipad doesn’t work – all I get is a blank screen and a circular spinning top. It works on my phone but he showed me the Apple discussion online and it blew me away.

Here is a quote from the report:

THE CURRENT VERSION OF THE FACEBOOK APP IS FUNDAMENTALLY BROKEN FOR ALL. Until the Facebook App for IPad is updated by the App Developer, forget it – as you’re simply wasting both your time and aggravation in attempting (and failing) to get it to work.

Do any of you have IPads that won’t allow you to connect to Facebook?

Facebook does work on my phone however and the conversation is ongoing about the Fever game. Here’s my take on the whole thing: pick one- Caitlin or the coach. Which would you choose?

It’s been a day.

Here’s another warning – see this flea and tick pendant on the collar? It’s by FurLife and advertised all over Facebook. I bought 4 of them and they don’t work. One is still in the mailer and they’d only give me 80% refund. Don’t buy them. They said it would last for a year. It didn’t work at all. I’m really good at removing ticks from Keeper especially. Ugh.

Dirty Dozen Number for June is 11.

It’s been a day.

Thank you!!!! Having the exact same issue!
I can go thru safari, but can’t use FB app in iPad but can use it on iPhone
    You just made my day

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Robin – and YOU just made my day! Why doesn’t somebody fix this???? I thought I had just gotten too old and stupid to figure it out. Thank you

    Such beautiful quilts!!
I’m sorry you have had such a bad day. I’ve had Verizon cell service for about 24 years. My local office is about 1/4 of a mile from my house. They have always been very helpful to this old lady but I haven’t had to go there for a couple of years. I’m sure they have a new batch of rude young kids by now.
I do not have an iPad. I have never been an Apple person and I live in the middle of Silicon Valley. I have always used Microsoft windows and have an android phone. I am upset with Google and Samsung right now. Google is doing away with Samsung messages and making us switch to Google messages. I hate it. Texting is a pain now. I think they make changes so someone can justify keeping their jobs even when the old way works better. Thank you. I’m done venting!!

A p.s. to my former post. I got scammed one time when I purchased something from a Facebook ad. When I bought the Fur Life tag I bought directly from Chewy since I am a long time customer of their products. I will never buy from a Facebook ad without doing my due diligence and checking it out first.

  4. Judi L.

Mary, I’m sorry you did not have success with the FurLife collar tag. It was recommended to me by a friend that has success with it. I bought oe for my 65# hound mix and I didn’t have any issues. Now, I did give her Sentinel which kept the fleas from reproducing if she got them and the FurLife kept them from her. I might also add that I do not live in an area where the fleas and ticks are rampant. I can only say that the FurLife tag worked for me.

I am always attracted to small projects. Loved the so cute bowl of pillows to the interesting collage of selvages.

I don’t use social media so am no help with FB.

    Sending prayers everyone’s way.

We made it up to the lake cabin 2 weeks ago. After selling the house in Western , NY last May , we stayed in SC. I can’t take the brutal hot summers there so last fall we started looking for a cottage to rent in the Finger Lakes area of NY. Cottage rentals for crappy places were going for $1200 to $1800 /week! So Jim found 3 cottages to buy and said “pick one”. I chose a small log cabin in the middle of 4 wooded acres 1 block up from Lake Oneida . It’s perfect for us but small. 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. So during the winter we bought a 33ft camping trailer for quests visiting; mainly our kids and their families. That gets delivered and set up this Thursday. The summer is gearing up here but it’s been very windy and cold, especially at night. Typical NY summer weather. Many wineries in the area and a very busy social life around the lake. Should be an interesting summer. Will keep you posted.

So Sorry for your frustrations Mary. I love
When tech works but hate it when it doesn’t. That’s why we have our 30 year old son!

I too have felt the sting of ordering things from FB. I have vowed to never buy anything from them again, no matter how useful or cute or terrific it looks on the screen. No, just No! Go to Amazon and try to find it there. I love the farm quilt with the little woman planting a garden. Is it a Jan Patik (sp?) pattern? Glad my little bowl pillows were enjoyed.

    1. Lynette in Orlando

Sue — I loved your little bowl pillows! I love making those as well.

  9. Dot in NC

My late sister was scammed by Facebook ads several times. They cannot be trusted. As long as Facebook gets paid to run the ad, they don’t care what’s in it. We are the product Facebook sells; the ad producers are their paying customers.

This current failure is a Facebook-caused problem for iPads running the latest version of the OS, version 26.5. Facebook updated their app a couple of days ago, and the update has a bug. I can load it running iPadOS version 18 on my iPad. (I haven’t let my iPad update yet, because version 26 has display features that bother my eyes.) Facebook will need to fix their app.

One hint I found online says that it sometimes works to hold the iPad in Portrait orientation, not Landscape orientation, while starting Facebook. After it’s running, you can rotate the iPad to Landscape if you want. There’s another more complicated hint involving temporarily turning off WiFi while you start Facebook, and quickly turning it back on before tapping Continue. I don’t think FB is worth the hassle of trying that!

Thanks to all who’ve been sending quilt photos; thanks, Mary, for this lovely community.

Mary, I do have an iPad and I think I got the message in as my browser no longer works for Facebook. Outdated and no support. I rarely used it any more for FB and would just take it to retreats for email. They have us coming and going. And I am resisting Ai also. I use the iPad for listening to iHeart radio. I like podcasts and the local station for local news etc.

My days have not been going exactly how I planned but the important stuff is getting done, like the graduation quilt for my youngest grandchild. It goes in the mal today!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Fran – my IPad is only 2 years old – I do not remember seeing any message – but that’s understandable as I get about 100+ a day

  11. Erin

    What a lovely quilt show!
I’m so sorry to learn about the FB mess. I already have such a like/hate relationship with FB, and your situation doesn’t make me like them any more.
I’ve fallen badly behind on my dirty dozen because of “have to” quilts, but I hope to catch up this summer. One on the list is a large hand quilting project, and that will take more than a year to finish.
I hope you get you FB issue resolved quickly.

  12. Carol

Mary, thanks for the update on iPad Facebook. I too experienced the unending circle trying to load it. However it still works on my Samsung phone. I can go to Facebook website and log in to get it without the app on my iPad. Very frustrating to say the least. I do enjoy your posts, the quilt, the animals and your flowers. Thank you so much.

  13. Joy in NW Iowa

The Facebook advertising is all scam!! A bunch of hooey! Don’t buy stuff on Facebook! Find the website and check out to see if it is even legit! 👿
On a brighter note, there were evening storms with threats of tornadoes seen but haven’t heard about any damage, but Leola, SD had 7 inches! Not sure where Leola is but yikes.
Well, today is the day to see the surgeon, boy I hope I can get a new hip soon!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Joy – oh, I’m sure your surgeon will be more than willing to get you a new hip! We need rain here but not until my hay is baled please! Let us know what you find out today

  14. Margie

That fellow who was rude should be fired. Because he knows technology doesn’t give him the right to be nasty. Think of all the things you know that he will never understand, being kind to start with. This technology is difficult to understand, especially us older folks. Right now my fitbit needs something, but I can’t figure it out. Take care.

  15. Bonnie in central IL

Same experience with Verizon here. We’ve had android phones for years but my husband had to switch to an Iphone so it would work with his hearing aids. He went to Verizon a couple of times for help and the reps were so disrespectful. One even told him he should go to AARP for help.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Bonnie – NO! He actually said that? AARP? He should have protested to the manager right then. But I understand because I felt humiliated and just wanted to get out of there.

  16. Lynette

My Facebook seems to be working and is ok. I know this sounds silly but have you turned your iPad off and then back on? I only say that as when I have issues that is the first thing my son tells me to do. I am notoriously bad about turning off my phone and iPad from time to time. Another to try is delete the app and then reload it back to your iPad. Theres’s the limit of my expertise LOL.

And for that person at Verizon who laughed at you –SHAME on them!!!!! I just don’t know about people these days.

Beautiful quilts!!! 4 more rows and I’ll have my Christmas quilt top complete!!!!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Lynette – I tried your suggestions several times because I was sure that would fix it but it didn’t. !!!!

  17. Gloria from CC

We have a very friendly, helpful Verizon store in Waverly, Iowa. We drive 40 minutes to get there but it’s worth every minute. Our local Verizon doesn’t have the knowledge or manners to be representing Verizon.
Caitlin or coach? There is no doubt it’s the coach – the coach benched the A team after only a few minutes of playing time and Fever was ahead. What idiot would do that? White is careening down the same road the last coach did – being fired. And the player who runs down the court 100 mph and always, always! misses the basket needs to be drop kicked. Caitlin is the WNBA and the sooner White realizes this, Fever will start winning. I’ll bet you are now wishing that you had not asked the question. Ha!
    Beautiful quilts today.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Gloria – no, I’m very glad I asked the question because I agree 100%. When I listened to her explanation of why she did that I still didn’t understand or agree. I’ve read so much about that game – C should be thanked for all the amenities and money the players are all receiving but no, they are just mean. I will say one thing against C – I wish she wouldn’t argue with the refs – just accept your violation with grace.
Verizon – I wonder if there’s an office in Algona – I’m going to find out.

  18. Cindy K

Fun quilts. I can’t comment about an ipad issue because I don’t own one. But I have to say-our verizon stores have the worst customer service ever. My daughter switched to plain talk and her bill is about 1/2 of what we pay. She has 5 family members on her plan-we have 4 on ours.
I’m curious as to what was said between the coach and Caitlin. Looked like they were both very frustrated.
And as for the tick collars-Hanks vet said the collars don’t really work that great no matter what brand you buy. Hank takes meds from the vet for ticks-prevents other things too-a brown, square chewy tablet. They come in a package of 6-he takes one per month. We’ve never found a tick on him yet.

    1. Francine from Dubuque

Cindy .. Can you share what brand of tick prevention you use that he takes orally?

      1. Cindy K

It’s called NexGard Plus. It is by prescription only-for fleas, ticks and worms. Hank takes one tablet per month year round. Dosage goes by weight. It’s pricey-around $75 per box twice a year but it works great.

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Cindy K – I got the topical for my dogs which I used last year – Revolution for heart worm, ticks and fleas. I was just hoping not to give them any chemicals.
Verizon must be known for rude employees – did you see Bonnie’s comment that her husband was told to try AARP!!!!

      1. Cindy K

Yes I saw that. About the only in house service Verizon gives around here is if you come in to buy a new phone. Otherwise, they want you to call and do business over the phone or via the mail. Two people on our account upgraded their phones and even though the phones are paid for, we are locked in for 3 years (one more year to go). They are a major rip off and we’re planning to switch companies when times up.

        1. Mary Etherington Post author

Cindy k – you’re absolutely right – they only want to help if they can sell you something – no customer service at all.

  19. Jeanie S, Central IL

Once again, beautiful quilts. I especially love the wooden bowl of tiny pillows. Sarah is a cutie. Thanks, 🥰

  20. JUDYE

I too have had issues with purchasing items off of Facebook. What I do is check my on Amazon for the same item or similar one. Also, I learned that many websites are not putting their mailing address in them which I feel is a red flag. I purchased a few items in the past off of Facebook and never got them even though they claim I did! Discover Card has been very helpful in dealing with these scammers!
Last year I purchased what I thought and it was advertised as artificial flower hanging baskets that I wanted to use at the cemetery. The hanging basket would work nicely on a dollhouse! Rip off!!!
Enjoying more of the red, white and blue items!

  21. Terri S from Mn

My iPad is about four years old and I am able to receive and open Facebook. Would it be worth going back to Verizon and hopefully you would get a different Customer Service Rep? or ask for the manager? With my luck it would’ve been the young guy that was the manager.😬

  22. Mary in So. Cal

Pet collars….I have purchased three items from FACEBOOK since last October. A cat bed, looked like nothing like the photo, a dress, and those “great flowers” where one gal said “you only need one bunch”. Yep, I ordered one bunch for $19.00 with shipping and it looks like something I could have bought at the Dollar Store. If I see something I like, I won’t buy on FB but see if they have a website by using Google. All three of these company are Asian. So I am
done! I have a stinky cat bed my cat won’t even use, a dress that was suppose to be x-lg and no way will ever fit me and the
material is crap, and my flowers, guess I will be making a trip to Hobby Lobby or Michael’s to add to them.
My iPad is so old, it wouldn’t help me find my iPhone the other day! Probably won’t do FACEBOOK anymore. Technology!!!!

  23. Sara in Indiana

I have my iPad set to automatically update, but it seems like half the time I still have to go into the settings and download and install updates. I just checked my settings and it says I have version17.7.11 and that that is the latest. What version are you on? Maybe you need to tell that Verizon guy to try harder, that several of your friends’ Facebooks are working fine, so it is not “down for ALL”. Good luck.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sara – mine says OS 26.5 and it is set to automatically update.

      1. Sara in Indiana

Well, guess I wasn’t any help! Now I wonder why my iPad says I’m up to date on OS 17.7.11 and yet you and several others are updated to 26.5! Whatever, my iPad is working and my Facebook is working, so I don’t really need to know the ‘why.’

        1. Sara in indiana

Husband just explained that my iPad is so old it is on a different OS update path than yours and other newer iPads. His is newer and is at OS 26. One mystery solved (for me).

          1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sara – I miss Facebook but it’s a time killer – a waste really so it’s probably just as well it’s gone. Too bad my IPad is newer and cant accept an update! I love sitting in the porch and scrolling thru FB!

  24. Connie R. In Wis.

Sorry to hear that the young man at the Verizon store was rude. At least we can write cursive, know how to use a rotary dial phone and tell time with a clock in the wall with hands. I’m dating myself!
I’m very fortunate that my nearest Verizon store has always been very helpful without judgment for some of the simple fixes I can’t figure out on my phone.
Beautiful quilts once again! Thank you.

    1. Charlotte in No. California

Connie, you made me laugh too!! I can do all those things. My 14 year old grandson can only read a digital clock. I recently heard to only print on envelops because a lot of the mail people can’t read cursive. So sad.

  25. Pamela Dempsey in Northeast Texas 😻

I hate technology issues! My emails stopped coming through about a month ago and I spent almost 4 hours trying everything Google suggested. It finally started working….
    Hang in there, hugs 🤗!

    1. Janette Schiedler

We tried the Fur Life pendants last summer. They didn’t work on our dogs either. I suspect a lot of the advertised items on Facebook are just scams.
Thank for all the lovely quilt and pet pictures.

      1. Mary Etherington Post author

Janette – I so appreciate you responding with the same result as us. It was an expensive trial for me. Sigh.

  26. Paula S.

My iPad has no problems getting on Facebook, but it’s only a couple of months old. I’m sorry you’re having problems. Like I say, It’s always something!

  27. Susan Sundermeyer

Mary, I use an IPAD and I have not had an issue using Facebook with it. Has your IPAD installed the latest update from Apple that came out in the last week? Sometimes those updates cause problems.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Susan – this happened two days ago – I have my setting to automatic update so I’m guessing yes.
