JB IS HOME! 12-17-24

He made it – he survived the general anesthesia and even though he looks rough, I think he’ll be more comfortable eventually. His head is swollen and he has quite a few stitches but I think it will be ok. The first thing he did when we got home was head for the litter box to take a whiz. He’s been asleep in my chair ever since – at his age it will take time but I’ll watch him like a hawk. He will get an oral antibiotic once a day and stitches come out 7-10 days from now. I hardly slept last night thinking about what was ahead. I’m cautiously optimistic.

Marie sent many pictures of the carved horses which will take me a bit to upload so I’ll post tomorrow. These pics are from Mary Ellen, Little Quilts:

Ellen Weber

Mary,

We celebrated Mom’s birthday on Sunday and she had the best day.

We can’t believe how many cards she has received from all across the country. I got her mail yesterday and she had 27 cards! I hope you can imagine how this has brightened her days.

You and your followers are the best!

Joan

Once again, Readers, you have made someone so happy! Thank you again and again for joining in this card shower. Doesn’t Ellen look great for 95?

Do you know someone who would love a card shower? Be sure to get their permission first. Let me know with a picture and a small description.

Thanks for all your prayers for JB – he’s home but not out of the woods yet.

I’m so glad JB is home. Lots of great pics once again. I’m very intrigued by the wool tree. It’s got me thinking I need to try to make one.

Joy – guess I must have missed something. I don’t think you said anything offensive.

Great for you AND JB!! Hope your crock pot is full of soup and that the cornbread is done. Have a peaceful and restful day, both of you!

I have the same “vintage” needlepoint done up and never finished into a pillow. Thanks so much to the Little Quilts for showing hers. Now I am motivated to find mine and get some gorgeous cording and finish up mine! One woman’s vintage is another’s inspiration once again!

E Rodgers – he had a hematoma behind or in his eye socket that kept bleeding all the time so the vet removed his eyeball. Now that blood will have to be absorbed which will take awhile. I was constantly wiping the blood out of his eye so I hope this will be a solution. If not I have put him thru more misery.

Good news about JB! You two can recover together. Beautiful picture of Ellen at 95.
Earlier this week I started watching my favorite Christmas movies, all on DVD. “It Happened on 5th Avenue” and “Christmas in Connecticut”, both discovered in the last few years, became recent additions to my list. “Santa Claus the Movie” with Dudley Moore was last night’s selection. “White Christmas” still tops my list, though. I’m also going through my Christmas CD’s and albums. Some belonged to my parents like the Voice of Firestone. Enjoy your favorite Christmas music and movies this season. 🙂

I’m so glad JB is home and survived the procedure. That’s a lot to go through but hopefully it will give him lots of healthy years to come. Patti’s quilt is gorgeous! The puppy in the Santa hat, so cute! Mary Ellen’s pictures are fun! Love the little funky tree, reminds me of a Bull’s Eye quilt! I love feather trees as well, but I can understand Betty’s not liking them! I’m praying that Joy from NW Iowa’s cats survive after eating a mouse that has been possibly poisoned. This is how many many owls are being killed – people use poison and the mouse leaves the house and before the poison kills it an owl catches it and eats it. My neighbor’s dog died after eating a poisoned mouse. It was horrible. I really wish people would just use traps. So much safer for our pets and wildlife as well. I’m feeling so much better, still coughing a bit and blowing my nose but I think the worse is over. Stay healthy everyone. Jan in MA

Jan – I’m so glad you’re feeling better! No poison around here – I have Mama Kitty in the barn and I never see a mouse and I have Hazel in the house – ha!

So glad JB is home and recovering in familiar surroundings! There’s no place like home, especially for a cat! I am sending good thoughts your way for him, and hope the surgery makes him a much happier and healthier boy.

  6. Joy in NW Iowa

So happy Ellen enjoyed all her cards! She would be fun to visit with and hear the history she has seen!
So happy JB came thru the surgery!
My favorite picture is the little black dog under the hat! 🥰
Yesterday we got some fluffy snow and we are supposed to get more today.
I need to straighten my sewing room so bad. The gremlins had a tornado in there 😝
Jay has mouse poison in the garage and yesterday there was a mouse in the water bucket! He poured it in the cats water dish! They ate it! All I can say is better in the water bucket than in my house!!
    Have a good one!

    1. Mary Says Sew!

Please be careful with careful with mouse/rodent poisons, and keep pets and livestock away from them. Pets can ingest dangerous amounts of rodent poison directly or by eating the rodents who have ingested them.

Antifreeze is another poison hazard to our animals, even a small amount sitting in a puddle. It has a sweet taste that is attractive to animals, but it causes horrible and usually fatal kidney failure. Even when treated immediately, it is very difficult to reverse. And it can take a while to determine what has made an animal so sick.

Whew!! I don’t remember reading what was going on with JB but so glad he’s doing OK after surgery. Hope he gets to feeling better real soon!! Also wondering if the gal with the Plaza Stars quilt could tell me where she got the pattern. That quilt is really cute! Thanks!

Good for JB. May progress continue. I love Patti’s tree quilt, but oh my all the hand stitching! It is a treasure. I made a feather tree wall hanging using one of Country Threads’ patterns years ago. It was easy to make and fun. My mom made it in a different color variation, so now I have two. Fun to have the quilts and the memories.

So happy to hear that JB is home! And made it thru the anesthesia 👏 saying a prayer for complete healing. He has the best nurse! Lots of rest and relaxation for him and pls keep us posted!

I’ve always loved feather trees and my Mom who dabbled in drawing one year made note cards with a little feather tree pencil drawing. I keep telling myself I need to frame it! I decided after seeing your photos, I’m going to start looking for feather trees to collect! Not that I need to collect anything 🤣 but I am a tree fanatic and thought it might be fun!

    Blessings to you Mary 🥰

Prayers answered for JB and also for your continued healing and recovery. Yes, as we age…two legged or four, it’s worrisome to have surgery, but JB is made of ‘tough stuff’!

I got the sweetest note from Barbara Aker in SC/NC. I’m sure she personally thanked everyone who sent a quilt. . What an angel she is for doing that. I so enjoyed seeing the Fox tv coverage from the link about her you sent in the blog. She and her daughter deserve halos and wings!

    Mary,
So glad JB is home safely and made it through the surgery. I thought of him yesterday.
Really like that quilt pattern, Patti! You amaze me with everything you do.
Ellen looks beautiful! I’m so glad she liked the cards.
I always called the little trees Charlie Brown trees also! Always learning on this blog! The modern table topper is pretty too.
Have a great day everyone. 🌻

Sending love and pets for JB 😻! Sounds like he’s relieved to be home ❤️. I am recovering as well from basal cell surgery on my forehead and 2 teeth removed and implant for new tooth in future. I’m so tired of soft foods and being sore. My sewing buddy that died in a house fire has still not had a funeral service. The family is not agreeing on anything and she would have hated that. Her sewing room/garage area just has smoke and water damage and our group has been asked to clean it out. Anyone know if you can get rid of smoke from fabric? It’s still hard to believe she’s gone and we miss her so much 😣

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Pamela – I’m so sorry family disagreements have spoiled her funeral arrangements – and of course you’re missing her! I, too, am tired of soft foods and especially soup. Give me a cheeseburger and fries!!! Sounds like you’ve had your fill of surgery, too – when I think back on the past month I shudder and one of these days I’m going to put my full makeup on so I can convince myself the real me is still “in there”. I have a dental appointment tomorrow to check out the front tooth they chipped during surgery. Dang. I hate going to the dentist.

    2. Sara in Indiana

I don’t know who does it, but there are companies that are able to remove smoke and water damage from fabric. I knew a person several years ago that worked for a company that did just that. So sorry for the loss of your friend–wishing you well in this difficult time.

    3. Marie C

I don’t know how much fabric there is but washing it with some vinegar may do the trick. It gets rid of lots of smells.

  13. Jean

Mary I am so happy that JB is home safe and in your arms! He will take such comfort with you as his nurse. Thanks for sharing. I kept thinking about him.

  14. Sara in Indiana

Very glad JB is on the road to recovery (I hope you are still doing well, too). Ellen looks so youthful with her birthday cake, brings a smile to my face. Cute (tolerant) kitty in the Santa hat. Still feels like Fall here, which is nice when we have to run errands, not to have snowy roads or bitter winds.

    1. Sara in Indiana

Just re-read the blog on a larger screen and realized that the cat in the hat is not a cat, but a cute little dog!

    What an uplifting day!
JB, home and resting. Hope you are too.
Ellen’s card shower brought her joy.
Christmas decorations are so beautiful. It is fun to see what is special share each year with their guests.
Patti in Florida who is the designer of the Plaza Stars quilt? I remember seeing a book/pattern years back but can’t place the desigher.

  16. Shirley Andersen Smith

I am happy JB is home and resting comfortably. He will be up and roamin around before you know it.
    Good news is good!!!
I hope all your readers have a very Merry Christmas.

Happy birthday to our new friend, Ellen!

I looked at email earlier for a report on JB. Good news! Prayers for a full recovery!

  18. Carolyn Boutilier

Glad JB made it through this stage. Praying all this will pass and he will be better. Working on some Christmas presents. We had a real warm day 62 degrees but weather and cold coming in. Hope to make some cookies this weekend. Being on a oxygen leash sure slows me down. Slow is not my speed. Sounds like you are mending well. Hope it continues. Love your posts. Carolyn b Shenandoah Valley Va

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Carolyn – I, too, hate SLOW, but like, you, I’m forced to slow up. The huge difference is that I will steadily get faster and I’m not hooked up to a leash like you which sounds very cumbersome. I should make some cookies, too

  19. Betty K. in Rapid City

We had a feather tree when I was growing up. I hated it! It looked so awful. Of course, there was no way Mom was going to spend money on a live Christmas tree. It would probably bring a good price today for collectors. I still wouldn’t be happy with it!
Now I have a small collection of miniatures I put on the coffee table. They are just a mixture of different trees and I like them — easy to put out and easy to put away. Maybe 9 of them.
Just love the little Christmas decorations that people have made and how they have them displayed. Counted Threads are coming back. I really liked the 22 or 18 count.
Everybody, stay safe. The weather reports don’t sound good. And enjoy wherever you are.

So happy to hear JB is home and recovering. We know how much you love your fur babies. I hope he has a good restful night and feels better in the morning.

I have a feather tree. I always put it on my dining room table each year. I, too, call it my Charlie Brown tree. It is one of the few decorations I put out each year.

I also hope you get a restful sleep tonight, Mary.

  21. Pat in AZ

Yay for JB ! So glad that things at this point are going well. Fingers crossed things continue to go well. It’s amazing to me how resilient animals are. They just plug along, catching our hearts in the meantime.
Have a peaceful evening, Mary. Hope you can get some sleep

  22. Pat Smith

I’m so glad Ellen had a great birthday. She looks so much younger than 95—I can only hope I can be like Ellen. I love the feather trees, but never knew they had a name. I have one I put out each year, but I refer to it as my Charlie Brown tree. So thankful JB made it through his surgery all right. Hope he keeps on improving until he’s back to normal. I’m glad he’s getting a chance.
