More NC Quilts, 12-17-24

How many of you saw the quilt you sent?

A reader from Indiana sent this very interesting article about Caitlyn Clark and Stephanie White. Thank you! I loved reading it and will add to my collection.

The following article was published by Martingale in 1992 (received from a reader) – I had forgotten all about being part of the Top Teachers Club.

Trying to bind a quilt with Greta’s help

Has anyone noticed the price of eating at McDonalds? $2.77 for about 10 fries!

A reader asked about this little cupboard in my piano room – this is one of two of my very favorite antique pieces of all times.

I believe it originally had a door but it’s missing. Each drawer is marked with a different flower which suggests the owner kept her flower seeds in the drawers.

Hollyhock
Aster
Shasta
Made from wooden cheese boxes
Many goldfinch nests
Oriole nests

Please don’t write to me and tell me it’s against the law to keep these nests! Would it be better to throw these works of art in the garbage? Not in my opinion. They are all made with such skill I shake my head in awe.

I’m up early because I couldn’t sleep worrying about taking JB to the vet by 8 am. He had to be locked in the kennel in the quilt shop overnight to keep him from having anything to eat before surgery. Poor old guy. I so hope I’ll be bringing home a live cat and not a body bag.

Say a prayer for JB this morning.

I cannot get the NC photos to open up on your blog tonight but when I watched the Fox News video, I saw several quilts that were sent up from my guild. So glad they will be used and loved.

yes, that is my improv star. the centers were pieced by her. i finished the pairs by adding the top piece and then kinda winged it. made flying geese but each end was cut independently. some points cut off, some very short. someone will love it. it is 40×60.
it is such a joy to see all the quilts in n.c. with people choosing them. quilters are such a generous group of people and will help so many others. all you have to do is ask.
so glad that jb is home and doing well. even at his age, i think he’ll be fine. food if he wants it, the litter box and a warm spot, he’ll be fine.
i love your cabinet with the bird nests also. i never see lone bird nests. maybe cuz i don’t live in the country. would never have thought to keep them. they are exquisite though.
i don’t know how i missed this blog post today. glad i found it. glad jb is okay and so are you. also hope you are taking it easy and continuing to heal.
blessings and hugs to all, patti in florida

    That’s great news about JB.
I saw one of my quilts in the photos. I was pleased to help. They will need all they can get.
My nephew turns 18 this week. He asked for a pecan pie instead of cake for his dessert tomorrow. It turned out beautifully.

Some years ago I found a hummingbird nest in our yard. It is the most wonderful example of resourcefulness and artistic skill. It is made with sturdy materials on the outside and has a downy soft interior. It is one of my treasures and resides in a glass display case to preserve its integrity.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Betty – I do believe these small nests are goldfinch but I hadn’t thought about hummingbird nests. I see the little birds in September – probably on their way south so maybe they don’t make nests here.

      1. Cindy from Minnesota

Goldfinches have their young late in the season (in August), as they line their nests with the fluff from the thistle flower. I have seen and had a few chipping sparrow nests as they used the hair from our black angus, my husband always trimmed the cows’ tails so they would not drag in the mud in the spring, you could see those long hairs in the lining of their nests. Hummingbirds have a tiny nest, from what I have seen they use a lot of lichens to construct it. I am always surprised to see where the birds’ nests are after all the leaves are gone from the trees, how those nests for the orioles stay there on the tiny hanging branches, and how they stay together is mystifying! I am lucky to see the Bluebirds’ nests so skillfully wound in the nest boxes I monitor as well.

Cindy – I see goat hair in these little nests, too. They are constructed just beautifully.

Wonderful that JB came through the surgery ok! Hoping his recovery is easy for both you and him, poor sweet kitty.
That was a great article on the quilts donated to folks in NC.

  6. Sandra Goddard

Prayers for JB. I’ve lost 2 of my cats and my dog the last couple of months so I feel your concern. Let us know as soon as you can.

    1. Pat in AZ

Sandrs, so sorry for your losses. I know your heart is hurting right now and please know that I am hoping you can find peace in your life without your loves.

    2. patti

my heart goes out to you in your grief. i hope the pleasant times you remember will help you heal. blessings, patti in florida

    3. Mary Etherington Post author

Sandra – I cannot imagine your grief! Were they ill? Old? How can you cope with such loss – do you have other pets?

  7. Joy in NW Iowa

I’m hope BJ will be ok. Will he have to stay overnight?

    The quilt giving is awesome!
My daughter bought a four drawer library card cabinet. It looks handmade and not very old. But she loves it and has decorated with it. It actually went through the flood in Rock Valley. She had bought it right before the floor and figured it was a goner, but the gal. Allen he and said it was up high enough it had survived!

It is snowing off and on, just fluffy stuff. It started about 9 am and I was planning to make broccoli soup and my recipe calls for fresh or frozen spinach which I didn’t have, so I quick went to the stone! Good thing it’s only 3 miles way. Haha.

    Have a good day!

Joy -JB survived the surgery! I’ll pick him up late this afternoon – I’m so relieved – I think he’s 19

      1. Janice

Mary, Thank you for providing us with an update on JB’s surgery. Hope recovery goes smoothly for him. Janice Traverse City area

  8. Jean

Prayers for JB. PLEASE give us an update later today if you are able.
I didn’t see my quilt that I sent to NC but that’s okay. Someone will be warm sleeping under it. I always use wool batts in my quilts.

  9. Angie from Baltimore

I am saying prayers for JB. He is one very special guy.
It is heartwarming to see all the quilts sent to the folks in North Carolina. May they blessed.

  10. Alice in SW OH

Prayers for JB! I hope he comes through his surgery well. I love the seed cabinet & love your collection of nests, they truly are works of art! When I moved here over 6 yrs ago the former owner had planted a blue spruce by the driveway. It was about 5′ tall & not well shaped. I took my hedge trimmer & “reshaped” it. It’s now over 12′ high & I continue to have many birds building nests, mostly Finches, in it! It’s like a bird sanctuary! It gets pretty noisy in the spring & summer! Love it!! So happy to see pictures of quilts sent to NC, what a blessing!

Prayers went up for you and BJ this morning. Hope all goes well.
Fast food is pricey but the taxes really add up on it also. We traveled New England this fall and found out a lot of the places have a $5 meal deal. McDonald’s includes fries, beverage, sandwich, and nuggets. Not a lot of help if you only want fries but you could always feed the sandwich to your dog. We had a neighbor that had a very old Chihuahua with 3 teeth that only ate McDonald’s hamburgers. FED BITE BY BITE BY HAND! Miss Velma was good about letting our dog out during day trips so I readily agreed to take care of Sandy when they went away for the weekend. I got the surprise of my life when a yard of tongue came out of this tiny dog’s mouth and managed to lick my entire hand and a good part of my arm while getting his bite of burger. Probably one of the grossest things I’ve ever encountered but Miss Velma was a good neighbor and you do what you can for a good neighbor.

I can see why that seed cabinet is one of your favorites. It’s beautiful! I’ve got a 4-drawer piece of a library catalog (2 drawers x 2 drawers). Fat quarters fit nicely in it as do small notions. I bought it for $20 from the quilt shop owner I worked for years ago. Never knew IT was such a treasure (apparently). Greta’s supervisory position cracked me up. Best wishes for JB this morning and hugs to you.

  13. Jean in Winterset IA

Prayers for JB that all goes well. And for you too! I had a Persian cat with a heart condition (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy – aka an enlarged heart) that required eye removal as well. His heart was so large they wouldn’t risk a general anesthesis do my vet did it with lots of local anesthesia and he did just great. He lived another 4 years after that. When he was barely a year old the professionals said he would be dead by the age of 2. He made it to 11 years- lots of meds, lots of vet care, lots of tending – sometimes 3 x day but wouldn’t have changed a minute of it. He was such an awesome cat! Thanks for all the great photos!

  14. Pat in Michigan

Mary thank you for showing the seed drawers that I asked about. Thank you for showing it in detail. I love the nests in the side slots. All of this is a lovely gift of nature shown in a humbly made box. Beautiful.
    Prayers for JB.

  15. Another Shirley in Oregon

Prayers for both you and JB this morning. Just in case the vet doesn’t tell you, once JB gets home keep him in a warm, comfortable, and quiet area with his litter box close by. Soft food is also helpful. You may need to heat it slightly for him. Take care.

  16. Tanya T. in Houston

Be sure to fill out the survey on your McDonald’s receipt. You get a free sandwich when you buy one! Makes it not so expensive for those fries…you just can’t eat them with your sandwiches! 🙂

Thinking of you and your little one this morning…

  17. Terri S.

Good luck to both of you this morning on your trip to the vet. I will be seeing a little prayer for JB.
I did see two of the blankets that I donated! It was so fun to see how many she collected and some of the recipients. It really makes you feel warm in the heart at this time of the year. God bless her and her daughter for doing all the work that they have done. It was nice participating.

  18. Pat in AZ

Hopeful prayer going to you and JB on your trip to the vet. This can’t be easy for either of you.
Mary, I really like the cabinet. My mom had something similar she kept her seeds in also. My bucket list find is an old library card catalog. I’ve only found one in all my looking and they wanted a ridiculous amount for it so it didn’t come home with me. One day, when the time is right, I will find it. I don’t know what I’ll do with it; I just want one! Haha

PS, please let us know how the vet visit goes

    1. DebMac

Sorry, Pat, but the librarians got to the card catalogs first and they pass them on to younger librarians. I have wanted one for years also and have also only ever seen one for sale also at an outrageous price. I worked in a library for years with 2 younger library directors and they each wanted a card catalog. Both said they knew older librarians who had them but were passing them on or listing them in professional journals for sale. I miss card catalogs; they were such fun to look through. So many interesting things to check into.

      1. Pat in AZ

Deb, I spent hours in the library going through the card catalog! Very much like the rabbit hole I go down now with quilting sites! Haha

  19. Fran Dixon

    Prayers for JB.

I am not really sure which quilt I sent to NC. Ha Just being honest here. But glad I participated. Quilts for comfort and it shows.

5 of us for lunch and sew day here at my house today.

  20. Diane in Colorado

Prayers for JB as you head to the vet this morning. I do hope all goes well. Prayers for you as well.

The NC quilts are fabulous and will be such a blessing for those who receive them. My quilt group from church sent many, but none so lovely as these you’ve shown in the photos. Ours are very utilitarian, basic quilts that we make for Lutheran World Relief and they have specifications we have to adhere to.

Your little seed cabinet is so unique! Love it!

The Grands are coming this week to visit with Santa’s reindeer on Saturday morning. I took them last year and Laurel requested a return visit. We are going to have a busy 5 days as I’ve got a horse stable gingerbread to make with them, cookies to bake, Christmas lights to go so, and presents to unwrap in addition to the reindeer visit! We will be busy!

Hope your healing is going well, Mary!

  21. Connie R. In N. Wis.

Yes, I see my quilt with the recipient. So nice to see that someone will love it.
Patti, is that your improv star quilt? I love it.
I rarely do fries at McDonald’s anymore. Too pricey. Used to be they had a dollar menu with many choices. Not any more. Sundaes used to be $1 but, jumped to over $2. I was there yesterday and asked if they had Holiday Pies. She said “Not yet”. It’s December 17. What are they waiting for?
