Karma, 10-22-25

So….I wrote my Monday night post and saved it as a draft instead of publishing because I really ranted, whined and complained about some of the orders I’ve received. Not the actual orders but the readers who can’t follow directions.

And karma struck by taking down the blog.

See this column? I use it all the time but at the very bottom it says “remove site”. I have always wondered why this would be such a casual tap when if one wanted their blog to go down, there surely would be quite a series of documents to go through to delete it, right?

I am quite sure I probably hit this by mistake – I use the Admin tab consistently every single time I write a post so…….it makes perfect sense that I tapped the wrong line. Wouldn’t you think deleting a whole site would take more steps than just one tap? Sigh.

Thanks to Richard I can sleep tonight. Richard lives in Minneapolis – he drove an hour south and I drove an hour north to the truck stop on I-35. I meant to take a picture of Richard and forgot but trust me, he’s a great young man who graciously helped me once again out of a jam with the blog.

When is it going to be just too much hassle to fix?

Which of these envelopes looks wrong? Which one is a Hallmark envelope instead of a business envelope? Try folding 3 sheets of 11×17 paper to fit a Hallmark envelope. It’s so thick it won’t get thru the postal meter – resulting in it getting thrown out for extra postage.

And that’s only one issue – sometimes there’s nothing but a post-it note that says – “Send pattern”. ??????

Thanks to 90% of you who have followed my directions.

Why is it that it’s always the 10% that drives us all nuts?
Yesterday Jay had an eye appointment, I thought if you…a ‘someone special with a special car’ thought the car was SO special it deserved two spots! They parked smack in the middle of two slots! Grrr. The eye appointment did not good well. He has developed scar tissue under the retina where they did laser last time and it is detaching the retina, so today they will remove the gas bubble fix the scar tissue, and put in oil and medicine for the macular degeneration. There will be some restrictions, but we aren’t sure what yet, but no head down and or lay on one side , thankfully. The doctor said there was nothing Jay did that caused this. Just for disheartening, but the doctor continues to assure us that his sight will what it was prior to all this! So today to SF, tomorrow to SF, Ugg. And Saturday again for pictures with our daughter’s family and out to eat. I’m glad it’s only about 25 miles and on the south edge.
Well, I’m sure happy you got the blog about nothing up and running again.

Joy – Since you are going to Sioux Falls, are you going to Vance Thompson Vision? The reason I ask is that I had cataract surgery done there and the place is amazing. I was so pleased with everyone that I interacted with.

      1. Joy in NW Iowa

No, he doesn’t treat retina issues or macular degeneration. We go to ophthalmology Ltd. Dr. Geraets is the Retina specialist he sees.

Frost here to in SW Iowa this morning. I love the cooler weather. Yard work completed and plants are all inside that need to be. All for good as I leave tomorrow morning for a retreat in Denison, IA at Wise Monkey Quilting.

Loved the quilts on display here this morning. I had missed the blog and so pleased you have someone techie to help you. It’s harder and harder for some of us to fix technical prob. I don’t understand it like I used to and can’t stand the hours it takes to figure it all out. My printer and my computer are no longer talking to each other, too. Grrrr

    1. Sherry Ware

We had to buy a new computer as Windows 11 won’t talk with the old computer. Had to have Geeks come out twice so far at $200 each. I hardly remember how to deal with computers unless it’s quilting 🥰

Mary you are a saint to drive to get your blog back up. Richard was nice as well.

Storms are headed our way starting tomorrow. We have to drug one of pups for the storms but she has such a terror of them and she’s almost blind and deaf. She can still sense them though. Sad.

Hope you all have a coming good weekend.

Sherry – maybe that’s what I need to do for Hazel – drugs! Dont computers just make you furious?

    “Alls well that ends well.”
Thank goodness for techie people like Richard.
Yes, you would think it would take a few steps to delete a blog!!!

  4. Kathy in western NY

So glad Richard’s skills can fix what breaks. Technology is not easy for many of us. He was so kind to send out a gracious email telling us what happened.

Kudos to Richard!! What a great find.
I get so frustrated with people not following directions. It’s almost like they skipped school on the day common sense was taught!
Last week a friend brought me 13 cutter quilts! A couple are pretty worn, but most are just beautiful. I’ll send some photos later. I just hate to cut them up, so might just cut off the edges and use those for my projects. As you know, the sides wear out before the middle.
    I am loving this weather!

    1. Teresa from Maple Ridge

Diana, Years ago I took a first aid course the first thing the instructor said was a lot of this is just common sense. Please remember everyone is born with common sense, the problem is not everyone knows how to use it. I always remember that and chuckle.
Mary, glad the blood is up and running and you have a wonderful helper when there is issues.

I’m so happy to see your blog back online. Thanks Richard and Mary for going the extra mile. I’m sorry that people just can’t follow the rules. The latest funny I saw online says: “I’m sorry I hurt your feelings when I called you stupid. I really thought you already knew.” As my mom always said to me, “If the shoe fits, wear it.” Again, I’m sorry for the people that just can’t follow the rules.

Why is it that it takes one step, one key stroke, just one to delete everything, but it takes 2 1/2 days to set anything up? It’s ridiculous!!

I love the first picture of the quilt with the black strips sewn into the fabric blocks. I’d love to know the pattern or if it was just improv. If the person who made this quilt is reading this, please provide some additional information. Thanks.

Diane, I love your online funny!

I’m not the maker of the interesting quilt with inset black strips, but have seen several tutorials online. Here’s one from We All Sew that looks good. She does 1/8” wide slivers, but you could make them wider using the same technique.

      https://weallsew.com/how-to-add-1-8-wide-sliver-piecing-to-your-quilt/

Having been a computer programmer myself, I’d consider it lazy software design to make it so easy to accidentally remove a blog. it’s not something one would do every day, so there’s no reason to not add a safeguard step. Just coloring it red is not enough.

      1. Mary Etherington Post author

Dot in NC – I agree – surely there should be a second question saying – are you sure you want to delete this site?

        1. Dot in NC

More than just a simple “Are you sure?” would be better! Maybe a loud whooping siren sound, and a big red “WARNING – you are about to delete your whole blog!”

    2. Deb in Idaho

Diane thanks for liking the quilt. The pattern is free on Jordan Fabrics website. It’s called Layer Chops. It’s easy and I had the layer cake all ready.

  7. Bonnie in central IL

So glad you are back and sorry that you had so much stress. Technology is extra challenging for those of us of a certain age! Hope you will have a great day today.

  8. Rosalie in Texas

One would thing that remove the site would be a 2 or 3 step process. I know sometimes my fingers hit the wrong spot.
    Thank heavens for Richard!

  9. Mary Kay Parshall

So glad you are back up and running! I too enjoy reading your blog with my morning coffee. It’s never dull, always something different. Sandy, your quilt really caught my eye. The fabric we choose really makes the quilt. Planned or scrappy, you just never know. It’s colder here too in Northeast PA. From shorts to winter coat! 🥶

  10. Sharon G.

Mary – Glad you’re up and running! 😊 Sending a big Thank you to Richard!

About a month ago, I inadvertently hit “remove” while I was trying to figure out what was wrong with my printer. So I had to find a legitimate printer site to download the software. I know it’s not as serious as you losing the blog, but you’d think there would be another step before something is removed such as “are you sure you want to remove this”? LOL

I understand your instructions for the patterns. What’s difficult about $5.00 and a SASE? When I order a pattern from you I always send you a short note with it in which I mention which pattern I’d like. It’s so easy!

    Take care everyone.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Sharon G – I think I’ve made ordering a pattern as easy as possible and I have repeated the directions many times. It tells me that people don’t read every day and because of their lack of reading I have to pay the price and use my precious time to fix it.

  11. Jean

THANKFUL for Richard! However did you find him? Happy you are back Mary. Coffee in the morning just isn’t the same without you.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Jean – Richard’s grandmother is a past customer and a blog reader. When I was having problems several years ago she said – I’ll bet my grandson Richie might be able to help you – and the rest is history. Richard works at a casino in cyber security.

  12. Sandy

Hi Mary, thank you for posting my leaders and ender quilt l made for the sweet Louise breast cancer charity in New Zealand, the storm today wasn’t too bad, although some areas got it worse! Sewed together a pile of Christmas scraps to make Christmas stockings for the children in hospital on Christmas day, will finish them tomorrow. Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy

    1. Karla T

Sandy~ I really LOVE your quilt!! I have it on my Pinterest board and want to make some day 😄.
I love your colors you used.

    2. Judy

Sandy, I had just finished reading Bonnie Hunter’s blog this morning and then I saw your Leaders and Ender quilt. It looks nice. Bonnie today showed blocks she had completed and was now ready to decide how to put them together. We just had some fabric pieces donated to our church group and I am thinking they would be great for this quilt.

  13. Dee from Shell Rock

We all love Richard, he keeps our favorite blog up and running. I got my squirrel today, Thank you!
I’m hating the cold weather already, I went out to feed the cats, wore my winter coat and scarf.
    Have a Great Week.
