Overtime and the Las Vegas Aces just ended the Fever’s unbelievable season – but what a game! Kelsi Mitchell left the game injured – how many of their team is on the injury list. Too many.
Morty had a big day – take a look!

Why does this cat know so much about being in the house, begging for people food, jumping up on the island? WHERE DID HE COME FROM????
Finished up a scrappy top – intended for a little girl I know but it’s not really anything special – I’ll see how it looks after being quilted.

I think I’ve got the corn garland perfected and here’s the secret. I did the original layer but as the stalks and leaves dry, they shrink up and nothing stays in place. So today I got a few more stalks – thank you, Farmer Tim! – and when I added them it was perfect. The first layer was a good base to build on.

It might be very hard to see what I’m talking about but if you are going to make a corn garland, do it in two steps on purpose so you can fill in the bare places after drying a day or so. I have lived here for 45 years and I just tried it now?

Reader quilts

What started as a short post got long – I always have more to say than I think.
Signed,
Windy

Well Morty sure acts like you’ve had him since he was born. So glad all the cats accepted him. There’s always a gift within, my good friend says, though you didn’t want another cat he’s already one of the pack. Love all the quilt pictures and really like that corn garland. Great idea Mary. Thanks for the blog. I always enjoy it, even though I may be a day or two behind.
Do you know the name of the quilt that Morty is laying on in one of the pictures above. It is a red, white and blue star quilt. Thanks. And hope you are feeling better soon.
Becky – I think it’s Devil’s Claw from one of the last Civil
War books – can’t remember which one but I’ll search
Don’t think it was Devils Claw. I have that book and it doesn’t look the same to me. Any other suggestions? Thanks for your time.
Becky – Hidden In Plain Sight from Beyond the Battlefield
Thanks again for your time and searching.
Morty seems to fit right in and he knows a cozy quilt when he sees one. My mother-in-law was always having stray cats come to her backdoor and she always took them in. When she went to the nursing home, my sister-in-law ended up taking the cat that became Esther’s housecat. It ended up having 2 kittens. SIL didn’t know what she was going to do with 3 cats. She took the kittens to the vet for shots and the vets secretary wanted to keep them. Problem solved.
I watched the game last night. Oh so close and so sad to see yet another Fever player get injured. Enjoyed all of the photos and the corn garland is a great idea.
I live rural and people drop animals off all the time. I get frustrated but then I take a deep breath and realize they would suffer terribly if dumped off in the woods someplace. At one time I had 16 feral cats that I had to catch and have sterilized and get shots.
Jean – oh, I feel your pain! The mama kitty that lives in the barn arrived pregnant, had 3 kittens, I had all 4 neutered and vaccinated and then the 3 kittens disappeared. I’ve taken in chickens many times, goats, besides cats and dogs. I guess there’s a reason we are the ones who live in the country. Thank you also for being kind.
Morty must have an assertive character telling the others, I’m here to stay, so get over it! 😂😂I love orange kitties!
Love all the quilts! Your plus quilt will be loved I’m sure.
It’s hot and windy! I will hold my breath because next week we will have the jackets out!
Great post today, love all of the kitties and especially seeing Linda’s Minnie! Yes, Morty has settled in nicely. I am jealous that all of your cats get along, I never seem to have that luck! I hope Morty gets over the parakeet soon! I lost my parakeets last year; I do miss their chatter! I’m glad Pamela’s cardinal was able to survive his crash into the window – looks like he provided a lot of entertainment for the kitties! This morning, my needlecraft guild had a great speaker, Marge Tucker. She’s an awesome quilter who lives in Massachusetts now and brought many of her quilts and a collection of vintage quilts that she has collected over the years, very interesting.
You are like my daughter in law who uses all natural items for her autumn porch decorations. She despises those big blow up things in yards so one day her kids (our grandkids ) found one in the garbage on their walk in neighborhood so came home and blew it up for their yard. You can imagine the laughs they all had but no mistake, it came down quickly.
I agree, the plus quilt for the little girl is very attractive. Adding the light blue offset squares make it that much better. 🙂
Jan
Hi Mary – For someone who hasn’t been feeling too well you sure do accomplish a lot! Thank you for all the beautiful pictures of fall decorating and quilts. They are beautiful and inspiring. The quilt you made for a little girl is awesome – she will love, love, love it. Sometimes when I am working on a quilt I get to that point too that I am not sure I like it anymore. When you see it with “fresh eyes” later you won’t feel that way.
Morty is too cute for words. I wonder how it is that he came at just the right time to lift your spirits and make you think about your dad? Mysterious – but he definitely came to the right home if he wants to be taken in and cared for by a kind hearted animal lover. How do they know? Hope you continue to feel better every day. Nothing gets you down like chronic pain and not feeling well.
Thank you Mary, for your blog. I love your common sense. Your quilt top is special!! I husband brought home a cat that was living on the street of the small town near us. The minute she got here, it was like she was taking over and it was her farm. Cats?!
Love Morty but then I love all your animals. Thank you for all you do for them.
The quilt for the little girl really appeals to me.
Morty is so adorable. Wouldn’t you love to hear his story! I love your corn garland. How is it the raccoons etc leave it alone?
Terri – raccoons do not come in the house yard – I know they’re out in the grove but evidently the dogs’ scent keeps them away. We’re coming into the possum season however and I hate it.
Your walk looks so inviting with your corn stalk garland. Morty looks as though he’s lived with you forever.
My son and daughter-in-law have a kitten they named “Enzo” for Enzo Ferrari, since he is constantly racing around the house, driving their old cat nuts. The stories behind pets’ names are always so interesting.
Erin – Enzo! What a cute name!
Darling, adorable cats! The Fever had a fantastic run, particularly with all the injuries. Next season!
Love, love, love the corn garland!
I loved your post today. Morty is certainly settling right in. He’s so cute. Your corn garland looks great! such a clever idea. I loved your nickname…Windy ! That and the cartoon gave me a good chuckle this morning!
The quilt for the little girl IS special. Beautiful! Welcome, little Morty! Showing his personality already! Thanks to you for taking him in and adopting him and giving him such a good home.
I hate to say this, but maybe someone dumped Morty out on the highway. A friend who lives on the end of a dirt road says pets are dumped in front of their house all the time. So sad.
I think the WNBA is a rough league. Kind of think the girls want to prove they’re just as tough as the guys, thus the injuries.
Glad you are feeling better. We just don’t know how to be sick, do we? Too much to do!
Diana – oh, I don’t have much doubt Morty was dropped over my fence – when people ask why I have so many cats, this is why. I can’t just ignore them. And I have a dog door that beckons – haha!
Today’s post was wonderful. I love your garland Mary what a great idea. Morty is a gem. Enjoyed everyone’s cats so precious. Quilt pics are amazing. Thank you all for taking the time to share and you Mary for doing this blog.
Your cats seem to be so accepting of a newcomer! Why is that? My daughter is trying to bring in 2 new kittens to hers (and her brothers) group of 4 cats. Only one is being nice! I guess they didn’t raise them right! LOL! You probably will never know where Morty came from, but he definitely belongs with you!
Susan – I’m not sure why Morty has just fit in from Day One – I doubt I’ll ever know but I’m glad. I hate when the older established cats are mean.
I don’t know how the cats find you. Morty acts like he’s been in a home before, so maybe he wandered off his own property and luckily found yours. He sure seems comfortable laying on a nice home made quilt! It’s fall and we are in the mouse wars already. One of our cats has a mouse trapped in one of baseboard heaters. Sigh…Glad they are doing their duty.
Pat – I think there’s a sign down on the highway that points to us and says – cats welcome!
Hi Mary, l think morty was someone, s pet and he got dumped or lost and very quickly found your house, he certainly isn’t feral! Thank you for showing my quilt with the hexagons, giving it to my friend Maureen tomorrow, then she can give it to her daughter Susan.Chilly day today, snow down the south island! Take care everyone, best wishes from Sandy
Sandy – your quilt is lovely and Maureen will fall in love with it. Snow!!
That is a perfect spot for your corn garland. It looks so nice with your hanging pots. Lots of beautiful quilts and the blanket tonight. And such cute kitties!! I had a sewing sleepover with my granddaughter and daughter-in-law last night. We were up very late. My granddaughter is making an outfit for the harvest festival. She almost got it finished. So nice to have company!
I forgot to tell you the other night that the picture of your house with the lights on was beautiful.
Charlotte – a sewing sleepover! Years ago we started all night quilt classes in the room above my garage. The first summer I think we did it every Friday night most of the summer. We were young then. Ha!
Your corn garland is perfect for fall. It was so nice of Farmer Tim to share his corn with you. Morty appears to be such a nice cat. You will more than likely never find out where he came from but you can be sure that he chose you for an unknown reason. I’m glad all the other animals in your menagerie accept Morty and vice a versa.
Morty is a cutie, especially on the quilt. Enjoyed all the kitty pics. Your corn garland looks fantastic—glad you shared with us how you did it. Wonder how long it will last.
Sara – that’s a good question – I’m hoping it will last till I put up
Christmas garlands
Like your garland. Looks really good. Morty looks like he belongs. Maybe the other cats are sending out vibes to bring in a new buddy.
