Local Fireworks, 7-5-26

Is anyone else just fed up with fireworks? I am! Hazel is petrified and so is Molly although we have fewer booms here in the country than she’d hear in town. But I’m over it and now! We’re hiding in the shop, where it’s harder to hear the noise.

I did watch the Nashville special last night and it was fabulous! I enjoyed it very much – maybe because I was sitting at home?

I didn’t get cookies baked as I had intended but I could get finger jello done, right? Well, here’s the scene in my pantry – I poured the hot liquid jello into the pan and unbeknownst to me the pan had a hole in it!

Brian wasn’t in church this morning and all I’ll say is I really missed him! If he’s not in church next week, I’m not going.

Wet grass or not I had to mow and after 3.25” of rain yesterday it was hard not to dig holes in the grass when I turned. Ugh. And remember my small mower broke a belt so I had to use the monster mower. Another ugh.

So it really hasn’t been a relaxing day. I did sit in the porch and watched the Fever game. At the same time I started washing all those wet dirty towels from the water that ran into the quilt shop. Heavy unbalanced load that sounded like the house was coming down. You know the sound.

And tonight as I was closing up the chickens I could only come up with 18 instead of 19. The 23 old hens were all accounted for but finally I found the young hen way up high on a wire partition. Another sigh.

So that’s my day. It’s been a great weekend – both America’s birthday as well as mine. I have a very busy week coming up as I’m sure all of you do, too.

What should we sew next? I’m going to start another flag quilt, I think, because I’ve seen so many I like online. Anybody else? I’d also like a red, white and blue rug.

Thankfully in Canada it’s just organized fireworks for Canada’s birthday on the first. Eddy is petrified and is so upset if he hears them. Luckily no one let them off. For us it’s always Halloween that people have fireworks for. It’s a very hard night for Eddy.
So sorry to hear about all the rain you and others have gotten. Hope it stops soon so you can get back to summer.
I have to look up my DD #7 and get it done. Glad you found the missing chicken Mary.

I hate fireworks too. The noise really bothers my ears and the animals and veterans hate them.
We went to Sioux Falls today for my two week check up. All is good, they did an x-ray and that was great too. The wound/incision site looks great, Jay said really?? He thinks it is the ugliest slash ever! Ha! It is colorful, that is for sure.
I have not been down to my hobby room since surgery. But, I have the itch! 😂😂
Mary, I can just see you buzzing around on your lawn mower!
A heat wave is ahead of us! Ugh! I am not a 100 degree fan!
Stay cool in the heat and humidity!!

Grateful the missing chicken was accounted for. Local powers that be finally limited fireworks so we can all breathe today. Best of all, no awful noise. Betting the emergency room staffs all around are relieved. lWashington D.C. air quality warning bulletins. Those unfortunate residents. With all that humidity I have to really sympathize with their discomfort.

I love that picture of Sofie. You go girl!!! Have really enjoyed the Patriotic quilts and decorations Mary has put up. I’m going to keep my decorations up for all of July and am still working on one RWB wall hanging for next year. My quilt is the 1st one posted in blacks, whites, & yellows and bee fabric. A few years ago my son gave me a gift card for my Birthday to a local quilt shop when I lived in Estero, Florida. They were featuring a fabric line centered around a Bee theme in Bee colors. I walked out of that shop with a very loaded bag of that fabric line! I spent every penny of that VERY generous gift card; my son knows what I like to do. Spent the next few years looking for patterns to use with those fabrics while working on other projects. Seems like I’m always playing catch up with quilting ideas. Just bought a simple Bee pattern that cost $12. I remember when quilt patterns were less than $5 and good quilting fabric was $2.99/yard. Those were the days.

Enjoyed seeing the basket filled with a variety of so many little pillows. What a creative use of patriotic scraps and handwork sayings. A 48 star flag just added more dimension to the display. Along with Connie’s little Patriotic pillow given to Mary, this inspires me to have a patriotic display of little pillows for future celebrations. Thank you, ladies!

Neighbors in the hills around here usually have a shooting contest with real guns. That is horrifying to me and to the dogs we used to have. So, I was dreading that. But, it didn’t happen this year. Hubby says the high cost of ammunition is probably why. One guy even has a cannon, but didn’t fire it. Can’t say I am one bit sorry. We can hear the towns display but don’t go to see it anymore. Laying in bed and hearing it is kind of relaxing.
I need to finish my little RWB quilts and then put all the patriotic fabrics away and clean up my messes. We are going to have a garage sale in Aug. and I am going to put lots of fabric in it even though it will hurt a lot.

I’m glad your pantry shelf has that lip at the edge! Sugary spills are the worst to clean up. Sticky, sticky everywhere. Did the missing young chicken fly up to the high place?

I don’t know who Brian is, but I hope he’s back in church next week.

I worry about fireworks every year because I have a cabin in a small town in the California mountains, with forest all around. Fireworks are not allowed, but there are usually fools who buy them down in the valley and then drive up to the cool mountains to set them off. Many valley towns allow the sale because local groups use them for fund raisers. Maybe they could sell something else? Drugs would make even more money! (Just kidding.)

I have been enjoying the red-white-blue quilts. Might have to unearth my sewing machine from under all the knitting/crocheting stuff and try a quilt again. These days, I just watch everybody else make quilts…

Dot – he’s our pastor – the sub was the most boring speaker I have ever listened to and if he’s ever scheduled to fill in again I’m not going.

Glad that your chickens got home to roost, Mary. That’s a lot of them to keep track of. Any eggs yet? And glad that you responded with the finger jello recipe. It’s kind of nice to have the 4th behind us. Wishing good weather for all!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Judy – no eggs yet – probably not till August\ September. Get this – the old hens are laying but – I can’t find them! And when I do I’ll have to destroy all of them because they’ve been sitting for days in the heat. I swear I have looked everywhere but obviously I haven’t.

We got off pretty light on the firework noise here. 2 years ago it was non stop for over a week. Our small town has it’s fireworks the weekend before the 4th and Jack slept through them. Went to the MIL’s for Independence Day and saw 4 big private displays plus the town display. Jack stayed home with our son and did fine as long as he didn’t have to go outside. I love fireworks and I got the crazy idea to buy 7 Roman candles with 10 bursts in them to celebrate my 70th birthday later this year. We had a little rain here on the south side of the Quad Cities which was badly needed. Too bad Iowa got so much.

We stress over fireworks since our backyard is a street away from wonderful park lands and open spaces. irregardless of being illegal here ,t here is almost always a stupid few!! On the 4th kids in the area set off a fire about four houses away! Fortunately our local fire department is amazing!! Only one acre burned!! We are truly counting our blessings!! Awesome quilts and totes today, I’m ready to start something too!! I just love red , white and blue !

Nice quilts today! Love seeing them.

My weekend was good but way too much work! Ha Took me two days to get the vacuuming done in the sewing room. Killed a couple spiders too. I had to clean the vacuum cleaner too which I did outside. So very little sewing accomplished. The neighborhood had lots of fireworks but mostly done by 10. People in the mood to celebrate. I heard fireworks sales were up–there was a sale oof them on every corner in the city.

Vacuuming around here waits for no woman. Last time I sneezed unexpectedly and pulled a muscle. It was so deep could not put ice on it but heat a few days later helped quite a bit.
      Where is that Tylenol?

All the patriotic quilts have been inspiring. I use Country Thread’s Be Still wall quilt and a couple of mom’s patriotic cross stitch pictures for my July decorations. I am making monthly door hangers (one for myself and one for my granddaughter’s dorm room) so this year I added a patriotic door hanger to my decor. I planned to finish Kim Diehl’s Every Heart Beats True but I had a lot of company. I’m still going to try to get it done in July. It is a free pattern from Henry Glass fabrics.

Sheryl, Thanks for the link to the Kim Diehl quilt. I love her quilts and am putting this one on my list to make—- hopefully soon.

I am so over the fireworks. Sounds like maybe that might be an age thing. We don’t live in the city, but out in the county and we have no rules for fireworks. You can guess how loud that can be! Even last night they were still shooting them off. I have a terrible cold and went to bed early. Can’t say I slept, but I tried.
Big family party here yesterday. Lots of food, fun and laughter. I felt crappy, but powered through.
Grandkids are at Minecraft camp this week. Thursday they leave for vacation with their dad to Mount Rushmore. I will miss them, but could use the rest.

Oh – we have had over 10 inches of rain from Thursday to Saturday. No flooding in our area, but Ankeny got hit pretty hard. A friend who lives in Elkhart lost everything on her first floor. She had over 12″ at her house.

Let life settle back into summer laziness, please!

I’m so over the noise fireworks make. We spend so much for mental health in this country for affects of PTSD and then put veterans and animals through it. Many seemed especially loud this year or else it’s me feeling jolted everytime .
The drone shows are impressive to me.
I’ve seen some nice Americana quilts this year so it’s good to remember the Bicentennial of our country with the rebirth of quilting around that time.

Frances – haha! I’ll post the recipe tonight – it’s just jello and Knox gelatin so the jello is cut in rectangles and is eaten out of your hand – hard solid jello. I always forget to make it for myself – it s sweet little snack –

      1. Bonnie in central IL

Mary, I make those for my husband but instead use the recipe for Jello Jigglers on the Jello box.

I totally agree with you as well about the fireworks….. fortunately we’ve had massive thunderstorms in the evening and has totally rained them out. Has made the dogs happy and then me as well. I’m finally back in the sewing room (yea!!) — working on a really cute sheep quilt. Will take a photo for you when I finish piecing – either today or tomorrow. I’ve decided to make it larger so will need to get some border fabric.

I want to make a flag quilt too. I feel late for the big 250, but our flag is always appropriate any time, any year.

    1. Lori

I just started my patriotic quilt MJ, I used inspiration for a quilt idea from one that Mary had on the blog. It’s never too late to start, right?

The fireworks area pain in the butt. Loretta ignores em.
I went to Laramie yesterday to have brunch and birthday with my kids. Brunch was delicious. My son makes scrambled eggs with crème fresh and they are so good. My daughter in law’s birthday is the first. Her grandmother was there from AZ. I had a cooco clock fixed for that her grandfather gave her many, many years ago. Grandma was surprised to see it too.
The blind puppy needs a lot of attention. She doesn’t like conversation that doesn’t include her and lets you know it. Her bark is very loud.

I’m completely over the fireworks as well! I live very close to Kings Island & for some reason they were extremely loud tonight. Fortunately Boots isn’t scared of them. First dog I’ve ever had that pays no attention to them, but the guy across the street seems to fall asleep every night with his key fob in his pocket & wakes everyone up with a blaring horn. That sends Boots into a tizzy! I would love to see more of the drone displays, those are pretty spectacular!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Alice – I’m so glad I don’t have neighbors – I’d tell that idiot across the street to hang his keys by the garage door. What’s new on the water situation?

      1. Alice in SW Ohio

Mary, new plumbers are on their way, they just called! I can’t wait to see how expensive this is going to be!! Taking Boots over to Ron’s now. Finally got Boots to eat his food, mixed in some watermelon & he loves it! I’ll keep you updated!

        1. Alice in SW Ohio

I agree Mary, who goes to sleep with keys in their pocket & why? My keys are always in my purse where I can find them! He’s been told about this before! We had a situation here this morning as my next door neighbor was leaving for an appt. She backed out of her driveway & sat in the street for a long time. Luckily she didn’t have her car in drive. She somehow slid out of her open door onto the pavement. Only reason I saw her was because I took Boots out. I walked over to see if she was okay. She was NOT! She’s a much larger person than me, so I ran to get Ron who a retired fireman. He stabilized her from hitting the pavement while I called 911. My concern was she needed medical attention! Paramedic’s took her to a local hospital since she couldn’t walk. I just knew she didn’t need to be on the highway & I understand none of us want to lose our driving privileges!

          1. Mary Etherington Post author

Alice – oh now – how frightening!! Ron to the rescue – thank goodness you were there to see this and get help.

I completely agree with you on the fireworks. My Ginny is petrified of them. We had a rain storm come through last night and shut them down but I guess the folks saved them until today.
