March Madness, 3-21-26

I watched until the final buzzer last night – I thought UConn was gonna get beat but they pulled it out. That was after midnight so I simply didn’t get a post written. And now I don’t remember what I was going to say anyway.

We did spend time in the muddy grove so everybody was happy – even Molly.

Even Mortie went along like a puppy

The mystery of the quilt in the entry has been solved. Here it is:

I had to leave the borders off so that it would fit on my hanger. Believe it or not I have 33 copies of this pattern WITH a color picture. I will have to fold it of course but it will be a $5 and SASE pattern.

And the wicker stand – it did occur to me that it was a sewing stand but why is it so tall? You couldn’t open it while sitting and you wouldn’t be sewing standing up.

I loved the discussion about the funeral baskets – a reader researched it for me and a similar one is priced at $165 on Etsy. And I use it for a wastebasket!

I use this one for eggs – probably not a funeral basket however because it has a handle?

Easter is coming soon so I lined up all my rabbits on the mantel. Here is the very first one:

My mom was packaging patterns for us at the time and she warned us that we shouldn’t print many of this pattern – who ever heard of a rabbit in a dress!!! Well, we ended up selling around 70,000 Timeworn Country Rabbit patterns! We showed her, didn’t we? It’s one of my favorite Hazel stories. She was NOT an animal lover. And then there’s me…….

Reader quilts

God gifted me this little cat for unknown reasons but I just love her.

Temps are going to be in the 70s and 80s today!! No post tonight – I’ll still be watching ballgames.

P. S. It’s been brought to my attention that there are several mistakes in Touch of Spring – easily figured out but I hardly followed the pattern when I made it. It was originally written in 2010 so it’s been around for awhile and these mistakes were never corrected on the pattern. It’s an easy pattern and you’ll have no problem making it. Mine is waiting to be quilted.

Jo’s granddog, Kira, rescued because she was blind and her fate was unknown. Wonderful people who took her in.

I think I’m caught up. Have a wonderful warm day!

    Mary,
Hello everyone! Sure hope you’re all enjoying March Madness like me! I am watching Scotch again for my neighbors so we are both watching. Usually with his paw on my leg or his hind quarter pressed right up against me! But I love him ❤️!
Loved all the pictures from your nature trail romp. Lucky pups and cats.
I really like the colors in Sheryl’s quilt, so peaceful AND beautiful!
Jo, Kira is gorgeous. Your kids are wonderful to take her. My daughter’s cat, Reggie, is blind but once she learned her area, she will lean against the bathtub and quick as a wink, she’ll jump up and walk along the rim of the tub! No fear!
    Take care everyone! 🌻

Mary – you captured some wonderful shots of your adorable pets roaming your place. I’d be a wreck if I couldn’t see that cute Mortie wherever she ventures. Maybe she’ll think she’s suppose to do exactly what the dogs do and go back in the house each time.
Love Figgy Pudding and its colors. Nice quilt Sherry to have out to admire. I have to change over yet to my floral spring quilts.
We’re going to have steady rain this afternoon but I don’t mind as I’d rather have that now than drought in the summer.

Touch of spring and figgy pudding are beautiful – as are all the dogs and cats.
We now have a “friends and family” group that draws teams (blind draw) for March Madness. What fun it is! My grandson Parker’s team Texas just upset Gonzaga – whooo what a game. The only team I have left alive is Houston, but we’re in the Sweet 16, baby.

    Hi Mary,
A while back you commented on whether people make all the patterns they order or just collect them. I’m the collector. Work and farm and family responsibilities have always seemed to get in the way of all the quilting I would like to do. We all have things we collect. What do I collect? One (of many) things is Country Threads patterns. Since I’ve been ‘laid up’, I decided to complete a couple of projects I have been meaning to do for a long time and that was to put all of my Country Thread patterns in alphabetical order in my pattern cabinet. I also listed every pattern I have in an Excel spreadsheet so when you offer a pattern for sale, I can easily check to see if I have it. Are you sitting down?? While i know you have written/published thousands of patterns, my collection holds 127 patterns. I have 16 that have 2 and sometimes 3 copies! I forget what I have so that is why I made a list. I always pick up your patterns at a thrift store when I see it. So, nothing compared to all the work you have done over the years but I thought you might be interested to know how many I have and I have finally have them organized, alphabetized, and categorized – ha! Have a good weekend.

Brenda – oh my, this makes me smile/laugh!!! I know you’re not alone – I have many readers who seem to order every single pattern and they never show me one single quilt they’ve made. I think it’s a shame but another scenario that puzzles me are those quilters who continue to rearrange their sewing rooms which are beautiful – not a thing out of place! But they will never sew anything because it will get messed up.
I seriously have been thinking of you and wondering how you’re doing – have you had surgery? And how’s your husband doing? My best to both of you!

Years ago I made a bunny with long legs and arms for our young daughter. She loved it. But, her brother would get hold of it and tie its legs and arms together and throw it down the stairs. Then, listen for the shreaks and they did come. Oh, my..I can still hear them. I wish we still had that bunny but we moved many times and we lost him. Memories. Not always good.
I love Figgy Pudding, Sheryl. So pretty.
Sweet, sweet dog, Jo. Sounds like you really enjoy and love him.

I made that bunny and I’ve always wanted to make the little carrot quilt that was in the pattern as well. So cute! Sheryl’s Figgy Pudding is beautiful! And so is Kira! What a beautiful dog and so lucky to have been adopted by Jo’s family. It’s really nice out today but rain is predicted for tomorrow. Hope it’s not too bad because we’re driving to Scituate tomorrow for a corned beef dinner with our daughter and family! Looking forward to that. Jan in MA

Jan – you made our first rabbit doll? I still have the carrot quilt somewhere.

  8. Jo in Wyoming

What a beautiful and interesting post today. 70,000 patterns is incredible!! I’m sure your mom was surprised.
Your basket collection is amazing. The variety of items we “collect” always intrigues me. I think all of them are interesting.
Then you ended with my Kira. She is the most sweet, loving dog. She hears them talk and goes over and leans on their legs. She has learned so many ways to get around in such a short time.
    Have a great weekend, everyone.

Jo – I hope she continues to make great progress – with her owners, I know she will.

      1. Kathy in western NY

What a sweet picture Jo and thank you to your family for saving her life. Kira certainly will be loved by all you genuine giving people.

So fun to see Mortie enjoying life inside and outside. He found a good thing when he found you, Mary!
I have made a sewing space on the first floor so I don’t have to manuveur stairs after my hip operation for awhile. I am getting some quilting projects together because heaven forbid I should get bored just sitting around waiting to heal. I know I will be doing lots of walking as part of rehab. I got a cold this week which is just about over so now I am staying away from people as much as possible until surgery on the 31st. I really don’t want to delay it.

  10. Sally in NV

Beautiful pictures Mary! Happy cats exploring outside! Kira is beautiful! I love Sheryl’s Figgy Pudding quilt. I miss watching March Madness this year as it’s not televised on regular tv. It looks like there has been some great upsets! I am spending today at the quilt shop for Stitch Lounge. Just a small group of us this time around with a wonderful teacher if we need help with our quilt piecing. We were supposed to break 100* yesterday, but it only reached 99! Breaking all kinds of temperature records here! Enjoy basketball tonight!

  11. DebMac

I love bunnies but not real ones. They eat my zinnias! I have a swinging cradle that my FIL made for our daughter 35 years ago and I keep my bunny collection in it. One of my bunnies may be made from your pattern. I bought Flossie at a craft sale but she sure looks like yours. I bet your mother “enjoyed” packaging 70,000 bunny patterns.
Enjoy watching your games tonight. I missed reading you last night. 10 to midnight is usually my cross stitch time so I always check before I go to bed.

  12. Lynette in Orlando

Love all the precious animal pictures and most especially the stories. I just can’t fathom how anyone could be so cruel to a defenseless animal. I’m glad there are people with big hearts to adopt these babies.

Mary, looks like your Iowa boys play my Gator boys tonight. Oh boy! I’m not the basketball fan that you are but I do love my Gators in any sport.

Trying to get my yard cleaned up after the bad frost we had. Breaks my heart to see so many of my plants that froze to death ……. I had a beautiful hibiscus that sadly is no more. Funny how many weeds survived! ugh

Have a baby quilt on my agenda for next week. I’ll try to remember to send a photo when I get it done,

Take care all and enjoy the March Madness!!!!

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Lynette – oh, not your Hibiscus!!! I love those plants! What a mess to clean up – I am familiar.

I’m getting ready for Easter but we’re going down to Florida for 2 weeks to spend it with Becky and her Husband. Leaving for the South next Wednesday. Will take a slow ride down and only go half way the 1st day. Stopping to spend a few days with friends then down to the condo we rented from a friend right on the gulf in Naples. Already ordered our Easter Dinner from The Fresh Market. They present great deal meals for the holidays. Got dinner for 8 for $89. It’s already done and all you have to do is pick it up and reheat it.If you have one near you, look it up. I highly recommend it. Had the 5th Earthquake the other night in 2 months. Starting to get worried about this. The epicenter is less than 4 miles from our home. If the Lake Murray dam is damaged or destroyed, we could lose our house since we’re less than 2 miles Down from the dam and could be in the wake of water.

    1. Sara in Indiana

Barbara, I hope there are no more earthquakes for you! I looked up Lake Murray Dam, and it says that it has been fortified to withstand a 7.3 earthquake. The Post Courier reported that the largest earthquake in the last two months was 3.0. Enjoy your Florida trip!

    2. Mary Etherington Post author

Barbara – oh no! More water problems for you – 4 miles isn’t very far for water to travel!!! – I wish I could order that Easter dinner!!!

  14. Vicki in Seattle

What a great post! Watching the March Madness games is so entertaining!
I have been getting a lot of mindless sewing done!😂. The bunny brought back lots of memories. So glad you are having beautiful spring days in Iowa.
    Enjoy them!

  15. Carol in Texas

Love your cats!!!!! Beautiful Kira…….aren’t there some wonderful people in the world to give that lovely dog a life. It warms my heart. My precious daughter-in-law rescued a dear dog from certain death. He had been at the shelter for more than 30 days and was not healthy. She brought him home to her husband and two labs and he is now healthy and, while still shy but so loving. A grandson and his wife in Florida took a dog that had been returned to the shelter more than once to be their companion, Spike. He’s not gorgeous but they love him so much. Pets add so much to our lives. Good stories are treasures.

    1. Mary Etherington Post author

Carol – thank your kids who are kind enough to rescue homely but loving rescues!

  16. Joy in NW Iowa

The bunnies were a hit. I’m sure you have seen the bunnies that had their paws hanging a curly piece of wire. I made one and showed it to someone and then I ended up making 60. Same kind of thing!
My daughter made a bunny all dressed up in frills and lace. So cute.
Mortie and molly are so cute!
Have a good day! Thanks for writing!

Joy – I hate making multiple items – that’s why I don’t have an Etsy account like Connie. She makes great little quilts and sells them there.
